What are you using? Manual.
Seems like the stealer is charging way too much. What is the best alternative and where can I find it?
Thanks
I'm using Red Line MTL, bought mine from Rosenthal Mazda for my Miata, but end up using it for the BMW.
Bought it around $10-20 bucks a quart.

That is about half what the stealer wanted. Thanks

Yeah, I think I will go with the Red Line. I stopped into Autozone to see if they carry it, fail. I wil have to order some and hope I get it before saturday so I can change it then.

I bought my Red Line diff oil (for LSD) from Amazon.com this past summer. Cheapest I could find. They might have cheap tranny oil too.

Thanks Marcus, I did the same, free 2-day shipping since my brother in law has prime. free shipping= best thing ever.

That's how I did it. I have a Prime account.

Stupid Amazon, they didn't have it in stock until next week. Prime = FAIL!
I am going to go with royal purple since autozone has it in stock, only a couple bucks more than Red Line. Sucks to be me since I want to get this adn the oil done at the same time and cannot wait for the oil cause I have a small leak. I think the filter is clogged.

Same here, found it at NAPA cheaper than Royal Purple at autozone. I went with the D4ATF Redline Tranny fluid instead of MTL. I read that the D4ATF is better in the cold, so thats what I got since its 25 degrees outside

I would be weary of putting anything in there that isn't what it's supposed to be. I personally wouldn't put ATF in there whatsoever.
When I was in the middle of the engine/tranny swap in the E30, we put ATF in there because that's all that was available at the time and the car had to get on the road. Gear changes are very notchy and sometimes it won't go into gear; you'd have to coerce it into getting in there.
In the ZHP, I have Redline MTL, and despite the sub-30-degree weather, it shifts B-E-A-utifully right after starting the car in the morning. Nice and smoooooth.

It's not specifically made for Auto's, it's formulated for both. Thats what I put in because the general consensus on E46F was for the D4ATF. I've read the MTL and D4ATF are very similar, but the MTL is slightly thicker making it rough in the cold, but smooth when warm. The D4ATF is supposedly a balance of of both. It still feels notchy like the OEM fluid but works great in the cold.
I'll try the MTL next time the fluid comes out.
BTW, what is the change interval for the fluid?

30k miles is the interval for tranny fluid.
I dunno why everyone keeps saying the MTL isn't smooth in the winter. I've had nothing but smooth operation since I put it in.

Where is that interval from?

Mike Miller's "Old School Maintenance" document.
It outlines what intervals things should be replaced.

Many people follow it religiously and have had no issues whatsoever.
Since it is so many times referenced in numerous threads and sites, I'm sure it can't be all that bad. :p

I respect Mike Miller's opinion. He did his homework and he justifies his position to my satisfaction. I like that he's been around the BMW block a time or two.

I think DW switched back to Red Line.
I'm still using RP. Still shifts as well as when I put it in.
I'll be using it again.
