guitar player here, that plays drums too. :) i play a lot of weird, slow, groovy rhythmic stuff (think helmet, kyuss, fu manchu, isis, etc). what kind of music do you play?

my 10-year old son plays as well - he's got the gift. the stuff he hears and can translate to the kit already is amazing.

My son and I went to the auto show yesterday in Detroit. There was a lot of boring stuff (snooze-fest cars)... a lot more virtual reality stuff, which I don’t think is particularly all that impressive, but my son likes it.

We had a really good time, as usual, but I only like to check out or sit in stuff that I might actually be able to own one day. So here are three measly pictures....well, maybe a few more than that, of the stand out things for me (sadly Honda did not have their EV concept there):


X3 M40i

Yes, it has ginormous grilles, but the proportions are very very good. It looks good from every angle just about. And the interior was spectacular. The seats were amazingly comfortable, very very adjustable, which is really important for me, and the driving position was fantastic with excellent visibility. It only comes with the eight speed ZF automatic, but I would actually drive this thing. Loved the colour too.

M3 CS

This thing just oozes awesomeness everywhere. I stared at it for a good 10-15 minutes, underneath, everywhere. And I loved color. My son was getting a little bored. ��

What’s cool about this picture? No, it’s not the carbon fibre roof, even though that is pretty dang cool. It’s the little doors for the roof rack mounting points! On an M3 CS! Mega.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti

This was probably my favourite for the whole show. It’s not the fancy one, but the base model (280HP, LOL) with the Ti package and sport seats. The seats were absolutely unreal. The driving position was perfect, and the build quality was amazingly high. I want one. Badly.

i need to post a photo of the many 5' high snowbanks i have around my driveway.

It’s great so far in winter. Lots of fun sideways action. Good snows and a full gas tank seem to make all the difference....coupled with the great ZHP steering feel [emoji106]

It's an insert. The headlight insert on the sedans and pre-facelift 2-doors can be swapped out. Knowing Stuart, it's an actual carbon fiber piece.

yeah, i vacillate. there's something about the amber when tied in blue + white roundel on the center cap. it's like the circuit is complete. and i think they almost look more aggressive than the clears...? somehow. in a weird way.

SaltyLooks like they were last changed 5 years and 60k miles ago (I called the dealership that showed up on the Carfax a lot and they emailed me their entire service history for the car -- highly recommended).

I've seen a lot of people say that they pulled out some mix of Bosch+NGK during a change like they just have a bin at the dealer and grab whatever's in there.

But yes I replaced them with the NGK 3199 set from Amazon (link (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DERDU44)). Perfect OE replacement without the BMW logo.

haha dude I was so stoked showing it to her, I even went out early from work to get it installed.. when she got home she had that Meh look haha priceless!! I went for the oem spec tire size 245/40/20 fronts and 275/35/20 rear / the rims are +35 fronts and +40 rears so there's a lot of room to play with the spacers.

cool! i'm not sure on summer tire size yet for our X3 (E83 LCI M Sport) as i haven't decided on going square or staying staggered (have staggered OEM 19's now), but i will definitely be increasing the overall diameter - much easier with square as there is no rear size that works - so likely 245/50/19's all around.

you are right... i also have the Touring itch... there seems to be a huge trend now where people are buying up tourings to do m3 wagons. some of them seem like they are on the right path.. most are starting with the body mods first, who knows they might never make it to the drive train portion lol

thanks, i actually was eyeballing those tires for the X3 since they come in sizes i can use and the prices are great.

i'm pretty happy with our X3, but i don't think i would be nearly as happy with it if it wasn't a 6-speed manual. it's got some rattles, the fit and finish isn't nearly as good as the E46, and the stock spring rate choice - with regards to F/R balance (frequency) - is appallingly bad. i'm really hoping eibach did their homework with the pro-kits, or i will be trying to figure out the correct F/R frequency and then going into coilover-spring mode for the rear, since the fronts would be way too involved/expensive to deal with.

yeah. personally - and i LOVE the way the M3T concept looks that BMW did - i think it would be way easier to do a normal MTechII appearance (but do it correctly), and full M3 drivetrain. the full 'M3 Touring' look is a LOT of work. my car is ready for an S54 - i would elect to keep the stock getrag 6-speed that i have already, and since my car is a 2005 it means i have the minimum amount of wiring changes to do (literally ONE wire) - it makes the swap idea a lot easier to manage.

but unless my ZHP motor kicks the bucket, it ain't gonna happen under my ownership... i have no desire to be R&R'ing engines for a good long while. ;)

i am really happy with how my Touring came out - if you saw it in person, it has the exact feel of a ZHP Touring, if they had made such a thing (well, they made 330i Touring M Sports for RoW, but none with the ZHP package) - real anthracite headliner/pillars/etc, black cube trim, etc. i wanted it to be as 'OEM+' as possible - which, LOL, as nate could tell you, it might be more on the '+' side of 'OEM+' - but aesthetically it's all there.

But I managed to have so much fun taking every single detour sideways, making U-turns with DSC off, and people shovelling their driveways stare to see if I'd make it up streets with snow high enough to be thrown over my bumper/hood and windscreen. The interior even managed to get snow inside since I was in #WindowsDownDriftModezzzz

And breaking the upper tubes since I couldn't get a good grip on the locks.

So it's possible, but it suuuuuucks.

Some years ago I saw a similar pic on e90post. A guy did European Delivery and was driving his new car in the autobahn at similar speeds. His odometer stated 20 miles, I believe. Yep, he went straight from the dealer to the highway.

At one of the wineries my company owns earlier this week.

It’s really hard to see the angle of slope I was on but the right rear was just about fully compressed and tucked in the wheel well while the other side was extended far beyond normal height. DSC was blinking as the tires spun in that position. [emoji23] I was in disbelieve so I pulled forward thinking I put myself on snow but that wasn’t the case. [emoji51]

I wish I'd walked over to to Turn 5 and the Snake, but frankly I was just too lazy. I'm also rapidly realizing the AF speed on that lens simply isn't quick enough to keep up with motorsport photography...whatever, who needs money?

Good shots! If you want the car clearer, move with the car when shooting. The car will be clear and the grass blurred showing speed and motion.

Definitely. These were both lower speed corners, so the panning isn’t as noticeable. It was also very bright, and I don’t have a 62mm ND filter, so even at 200ISO I couldn’t shoot any slower than 1/125sec.

very nice! what camera and lens were you using? whats the EXIF on the images? the shutter speed looks relatively low.. probabyl less than 1/250th sine the wheels arent frozen which is a good thing.

I don’t use a CPL on that lens (eyeroll) because the hood screws into the filter threads, and makes it a huge PITA once the focus barrel starts turning.

as long as you have AF-C enabled on your camera and use the center 9 point focus mode... even an AF-D lens can focus properly with motor sports since your distance to focus doesnt extend the full range of the lens like you do with birding and wild life.

i have a 300 AF-D lens and it tracks fine with motor sports. you just need to PAN and use a mono pod until you get good at panning by hand. AF-C do it man :)
