Thanks for the compliments! I actually don't have auto fold mirrors.

It's part of my ritual when I park to: Turn my volume down to 5, reset my miles driven, put my parking brake up, put my sun visor up, step out the car, fold my mirrors myself, pull out my bumper bully from the trunk, and pray to the ZHP Gods nothing happens to my car in the streets of NYC. [emoji1374]

I'm usually in the heart of the city so I have to fold my mirrors or they'll be on the floor one day when I get back. The bumper bully is also a must!

That picture was by my girlfriends house, she lives in the "suburbs" of the city so I didn't really have to do all of that, but it's just habit now.

I went to the IMSA event yesterday at VIR and found a relative. I couldn't find the owner anywhere. The parking assistant told me what he looked like, and said he'd tell the owner I was hoping to talk with him. Maybe I'll bump into them at another CCA event.

There were some serious beauties, including a Dakar E36M with only 40k on the clock. I'll post some pics when I finish going through them all.

When I previously owned this car I had E46 ZHP. I turned them in so kayger could get them for his car but they never became available. Still locked out so I had to reverse it.

I got the mirrors for...gasp... $215 shipped with clean glass (meaning, no scratches, no browning, etc.). I got really lucky, which is the only reason I went down this path right now. It was a part out and I asked, expecting him to say "$300-350" just like everyone else. When he said "$200 plus shipping" I didn't hesitate.

I bought a can of paint for Nate and I each from automotivetouchup.com, and 2 cans of clear coat for $65-70 shipped. So I'm in for half of that. It took a full can for both mirrors. I used generic Duplicolor primer and black for the bases, so figure that was another $10.

They say wait 1 month before waxing, so I'm going to wait 1 month before putting clear wrap on it. I don't expect it to be as impact resistant as standard paint, which is why I'm going the route of paint protection film.

Old caliper is in the trash. It sure felt like a lot more work than my old parts pile would suggest.


I highly recommend keeping your old calipers. I'm glad I did - I had so many cases of leaking calipers when I had my BMW Performance ones that I'm glad I had something to revert to every time I had to rebuild them.

I'm better off getting one at Pull-a-Part. This thing was rusted beyond salvage. I couldn't even get the brake line out of the back, that's how bad it was. Oh and the brake line bracket that attaches to the trailing arm was totally seized together too. I ended up feeding a heavy duty ziptie through the RTA to hold the line in place.

Like I said before, aside from the Miata I'm buying next year, my next car is coming from Arizona.

Just remember that 330's aren't as common as their lower end counterparts, so depending on your area, they may be harder to come by at those kinds of yards.

For sure. Our non-330 to 330 ratio is about 7:1 at the two pull yards I'm familiar with. But I do keep an eye on the listings once every 7-10 days.

yep, they are powerflex units. i doubt they would be causing the noise (i always use a judicious amount of PFTE lube), but hard tellin' not knowin'... ;)

Yeah, I would change the interior trim too. Though it could be like that from the factory since it's Individual or might just be owners doing.

I almost pulled a trigger on another unicorn in Estoril blue, individual E39 M5.
Wanted to buy it and take it back to original condition cause to me it looks pretty awful slammed like this and with these ugly ass rims.

It's advertised as having 98k miles without service book, after checking with BMW it actually has around 186k miles.

The guy is a mechanic and the car is actually in pretty good shape according to him, but I did catch him lie few times so we'll see.
Things I don't like are it's pre-facelift and his choice in oil Motul 20W60 which I think is way too thick for Germany, but then he says he doesn't drive it in winter.

For now, I'm off to Austria tomorrow in search for another rare beast. :biggrin

All you guys with your M-Sport E83s will never know the misery of maintaining all that black bumper trim! I dated a girl in high school who drove an Alpine over Saddle Brown, so I'll always have a fondness for AW X3s.

For me too, but buying cars in Europe is always an adventure, there is so much risk involved that you have to cover your ass in every step and triple check everything.

Today I had yet another experience for the books. I traveled overnight to buy another E31, this one was a bit younger from 1995, individual 840Ci with 6 speed, so a V8 which is more rare (1 of 329) with a manual and more desirable for some people.

Thoroughly tested and inspected the car and it was in decent shape, far from perfect but good enough given the age and mileage.

Started checking papers of the car to find that in Typenschein (like a title in Austria) says that the owner is some Turkish guy named Muhamed.
Guy who was selling it was an Austrian and he bought the car 2 years ago and made a sales contract with some other Turkish dude named Mustafa, and not the owner that it is in the documents.
In those 2 years he never registered the car in his name, but he did make another sales contract stating that he sold it to his brother and now he is trying to sell it to me, haha :confused. It wouldn't be so bad if he actually had a sales contract between him and the owner in Typenschein, but he doesn't and therefore cannot register it or sell it to me legally. He wanted to make a new contract and make it look like I bought it from that Muhamed dude and he signs instead of him, but I just hate doing shady business so I walked away.

Big waste of my time, though not the first and probably not the last. It just baffles me how can somebody not mention such an import piece of information over the phone and I have to travel to another country just to find that out.

i actually like the style 192s (like pictured below), i wish those came with it - not these ginormous 19s.

the M badge.... yeah, the PO put that on. that and the 'X3' badges are going!

after more driving, it does need some stuff to freshen it up a bit...

- new dampers (going koni FSD most likely, but the bilstein B6 looks good too)
- new engine/trans/diff mounts
- new RTABs and RCABs

will probably do all of that in the spring.

I maintain that NYC is the worst place in the country to own a car purely from an abuse perspective.
Anyone who asks me to get a ride to NYC is promptly rejected, for this reason. I've hit potholes so hard my sunroof switch panel popped out of place (and no the clips were not broken or loose).


That is some really odd damage for you not to notice it. Did you let anyone borrow your car recently? Perhaps this happened with that person?

Hope you can find a replacement, man... damn.

Peter - the X3 looks like a fun alternative to the baja e46 touring that we'll one day build. Definitely needs a larger diameter tire...but will you be able to handle the reduced acceleration???

ha. i realized it's actually running a larger tire already - stock diameter is 27.1", these are actually 27.7" (245/45/19 up front and 275/40/19 in the rear). if i keep these wheels i'll likely keep this tire size, otherwise i'll go down to 18's and run 235/55/18 (28.2" diameter... so 1.1" larger than stock).

as it sits, it's pretty quick and delivered 25mpg in mixed driving on our 2000km trip over the last 5 days. so that's a mega win-win. skinnier tires would help the fuel economy, and also i don't know if it really needs 275's in the back. :)

further to all of that... after putting 2300km on in the last week since picking it up, i've realized that it's a darn good handling vehicle... so i might not lift it at all and put 2" larger AT tires on it. :) it was great on our trip and my family loves it.

it IS going to get a bit of the ol' Slater Package though. ;) some mounts need attention (rear diff and trans mount in particular), and i think i'm leaning towards putting FSDs on it!

(and YES to the Baja Touring!!)

You're most likely not going to get anywhere. It's not a warranty issue because there's physical damage that looks like it would have come from an external source. But... what have you got to lose other than some time? Might as well try...

well, this thing is 4000lbs, so 275's aren't that nuts. they don't look out of place from the rear. :)

i mounted the 18" winter wheels (style 113's - 18x8 ET46), with their 235/50/18 snows and man, they look like 16's on a ZHP. tiny!

i need to get over my urge to modify this thing, but i DO have standards... ;) i am 100% decided on the FSDs. and now all of a sudden, thinking about eibach pro-kits to go with them. what the heck?!

i also did a bit of poking around the suspension last night, and aside from tired shocks and one dying upper front control arm bushing (easy replacement), it's in good shape, and surprisingly clean.

Before and after, the left rear sits 1/4-3/8” higher than the right rear, which I assume is from tired bushings. Until I change the bushings and know for sure, I’ll continue to blame Canada.
