First time driving a properly sorted E46 M3 ZCP 6MT. Must say...there is no comparing the zhp to it. Completely different experience. So much fun. I'd get a damn ticket so fast though...
I'm very jealous. The ZHP isn't bad, but 230HP just isn't anything to write home about. 250HP is where things start to get interesting IMHO, and the ZHP just isn't quite there. Not that it isn't still a lot of fun to drive, and it's very safe and practical for an everyday car, but there just isn't much of that rush when you step on the "go pedal" like there is in a more powerful car.
After driving a lot of cars over the years, I feel like I have my barometer pretty-well calculated. Assuming typical size/weight (not a roller skate like the Miata), 250HP is where things start getting interesting. 300HP is where it's getting fun, and the 333 in the E46 M3 is plenty to have all variety of fun and get in all sorts of trouble - especially if you're not careful. I MUST drive one, and long-term I think I'm going to have to own one.
I auto-crossed my dad's '96 Grand Sport years ago, and that car had the 330HP LT4. Obviously, that car was more torquey, but the HP/weight ratio would be pretty similar to the E46 M3. THAT is a fun ballpark to be in.

The ZHP is quick enough for everything. In the low speed mountain runs, my friend could never outrun my ZHP with his M3. The ZHP is really an amazing vehicle considering its power on paper. On the road it's a much better feeling. Just make sure your M54 is fully sorted with its suspension.

I would very much agree with that. The RUSH I got when I stepped on it in that car is just NOT available in the zhp. I do get that feeling from time to time though, it's just more subtle. The ZHP surprises you with how it behaves and reacts in certain situations..."like whoa I took that corner fast and it felt great" *big smile* Or even with accelerating...you hit it just right at the right time and she moves her ass. *big smile*
With this it was the *OH SHIT I'm going 60 already* feeling anytime I wanted it. *big smile every time*
After driving it, I really can't even compare them. The ZHP is the best "all-around" car and makes me smile in her own ways whereas the M3, especially this one, are geared toward performance driving. Literally. Two different classes.

I really love both of them for their own merits. Couldn't see getting rid of ZHP for an M. It's just too good for everyday and the way I drive.

I would have never got rid of the ZHP if it wasn't totalled. But I knew that once that chapter came to a close, I owed it to myself to experience what that ///M badge I saw all over my ZHP, truly meant. And now I have a much better understanding on why this car is a totally unnecessary animal on the streets. It's natural habitat is the open road and canyons where lions and tigers roam...not caged up in a city. LOL

I agree with all of this, the S54 is just a jewel of a motor. When I had my Z4MC as garage-mate to my ZHP, it was a perfect pair in many respects. After 8 years with the Z4MC, I decided it was time to move on and experience the E39 M5 as my "other" car. In a perfect world, I'd have added it rather than sacrificed the Z4 for the M5, but that was just not possible. In a TRULY perfect world, I'd also have an E46 M3 for a "complete" stable of 4. Still want to own one eventually, but what would I give up to get it? Brutal question.

They look good, but aren't OEM way cheaper?

that's the rub!
i haven't driven an E46 M3 yet. i'm kinda both anxious and not anxious to do so. :)

i think you'd really like a shorter rear end ratio. the 3.46 rear end really makes my car feel like a lot more than 235hp.

agreed on this, especially with the 3.46. i already drive it too fast for the street most of the time...

+1 on the gearing. Definitely helps to liven things up a bit!
And I recommend not driving one...the bug gets in you...Even if just a little bit.

Aaaaaaaaand first new pic of the year! Fen next to my buddies new Stang. The offset makes the ZHP look tiny compared to the Mustang aaaaaand it's correct. It doesn't lack much interior space at all when compared. But the "we swear to God it's not an Aston" body work on the Stang makes the car feel very large. Fun to drive though [emoji1]

Very straight forward. Consider an alignment afterwards. Though it should change much but the caster.

I wonder how different the specs would be with the Z4M FCabs, Im due for an alignment asap along side some new brake pads & rear rotors so this would be a fun weekend project [emoji16]

Yep, fcabs are super simple to do, just make sure you get yourself a three jaw puller like this
http://m.harborfreight.com/3-piece-three-jaw-puller-set-8832.html?utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided
Getting the new fcabs can be kind of tricky too, I use some soapy water and a rubber mallet to gently tap them in place

Good call. With the puller I put a small dimple in the end of the arm with a punch so it stays in place. And it helps if you stick the fcabs in the freezer for 15 min or so--all tips from BCS_ZHP!

These are my ride heights (bottom of fender to middle of wheel) right now:
FL = 13.25"
FR = 13.25"
RL = 12.75"
RR = 12.75"
The urban jungle hates me. The car tenaciously holds and doesn't let go easily. My old ZHP setup that I missed is coming back to life. Ride quality is more compliant than OEM. I've got more tinkering to do but my shock settings are 4/18 for the front and 2/18 for the rear, which are biased to the soft ride side.
I want to dial in front and rear suspension frequency so the rear is 10% faster in Hz for a flatter ride quality.
The Bimmerworld monoball sealed bearing RTABs have transformed the rear direction without introducing any addition noise. I've got a lot of getting used to because my shot OEM rubber RTABs had me oversteering far more than I should.
No complains so far other than it's a long process to adjust rear ride height because the spring perches are tucked behind and up into the chassis of the car. Pulling the wheel off and undoing the lower shock bolt is the only way to give enough spring slack to turn the adjustment collar on the loose spring perch.

excellent - i had forgotten you were getting these. glad you're enjoying them! i find they just make the rear end intuitive - it responds how it should, sort of like it's connected to your instincts.

yep, this part stinks. however, it is sweet that the 50/50 weight distribution, and seemingly 50/50 L/R bias allows you to actually set the perches the same left and right, and get the same height - amazing and takes out a lot of guesswork.
i've been avoiding the correct solution for this adjusting issue, which is the Ground Control weight jacks. check this out - the lower perch articulates, and also allows you to adjust the height from the bottom - under the control arm! how cool is that?

^those are awesome by the way. I haven't adjusted because I don't want to take everything apart but I would have if I had those. Not cheap but awesome to add into a build if you want adjustability.

The bradford pear tree's are in full bloom this weekend. Perfect timing for our club drive tomorrow. Highs will be in the mid 50s with cloudy sky's. Hoping for a good turnout with the cool temps.

I was able to knock out my entire swap in 45 minutes and that includes Bs'ing with the other guys at the shop, haha. I took a 300 mile day trip the next week and was never happier with a shop day's efforts. 110 degrees in the NM sun and the system was flawless.
I may go for upgraded pulleys next time. Not really cause I need them buuuut.... They come in blue...

Speaking of.. I'm driving to work one morning last year, and come up on an E39 M5 in Dakar Yellow. Then I see his plate - 1OF5INUS or something similar (that's one character too many for AZ, but I digress). Did some checking when I got home, and found the guy on the interwebs. It is indeed 1 of 5 Individual Dakar E39 M5's that were imported. Bitchin'.

Are you lowered at all? If you're on stock zhp suspension you shouldn't have any problems rubbing, if you're lowered you may need to roll the fenders slightly. I rub a tiny bit with 5mm spacers. Usually only when I'm getting out of a parking lot/driveway.

Don't have a sprint booster but I do know exactly what your talking about. My brother in law has it in his zhp . You can tell the difference when I driving with it . That when I hop on my car is sluggish . And disappointing to drive . I need to find a cheap one though I'll pay 100 to 200 bucks on it but 300 is to much
