It was brutal outside today. High humidity and despite having 9-10 bottles of water, I still felt dehydrated.

The place I'm staying at doesn't have AC or even WIFI. Let's not even talk about all the bugs (it's right on the water).

Despite the hosts being amazing people and the cottage being very nice otherwise, I won't be staying here next year unfortunately.

The S62 is one of my all time favorite sounding motors. You can have wailing V-12s, sonorous V-10s, raucous I-6s, and a myriad of other set ups, but that German V-8 will remain pure automotive symphony to my ears.

The "new" M5, with the ZHP lying in wait in the garage. She's now all properly titled & licensed in Arizona. Insurance is slightly cheaper than my Z4MC was, and the license tag was downright cheap, thanks to 13 years of depreciation. I must say - despite all the strong points of the E39 M5, it also makes me appreciate the finer points of the ZHP. I love them both. Even if most of my friends/family won't understand that they aren't the same car....

A little bit.. but not much. I was very careful in the months leading up to unloading it to make sure that I was ready to move on. I had a couple of long, soul searching drives with her and decided it was indeed OK to let her be free.

Getting used to the M5 is proving to be an interesting experience. It's sooo different from the ZHP. You really feel the heft of the car, and that's not all a good thing. The recirculating-ball steering - which all V8 E39's have, while the 6's have r&p - is a noted weak spot, and when you own a ZHP to compare it to, it's really glaring. It's over-boosted at low speeds, and quite vague on-center. I REALLY appreciate the ZHP steering when I jump back into that car, it's just so much more precise and "alive" in your hands. That's not to say the M5's steering "sucks", it's just not nearly as good. It's still light years better than the current electric setups, which feel absolutely wooden to me. But the ZHP is nirvana, especially when all your steering and suspension components are well-maintained, your alignment spot-on, and quality rubber is afoot. You guys out there with higher-mileage cars who have neglected some of this stuff - you really don't know what you're missing. Refresh those FCABS & shocks and whatever else might be shot, and you'll be amazed at how it can transform the car.

Doing business with EAG was a great experience. I got really decent money for the Z4MC, given the current state of the market. It fit their target car profile perfectly - one owner, zero paint/body work, lived its entire life in a "dry" state, stack of maintenance records back to the 1200-mile service, and relatively low mileage (57k), though not low by their standards, but low enough given the other particulars. I paid top dollar for the M5, but it had $6600 worth of work done on it prior to sale, including a new clutch & rear main seal, thrust arm bearings, power steering hoses, and a bunch of other stuff. Curiously, a clutch & seal job at EAG only retails for about $1500, including parts, which seems really reasonable. A good thing since these cars are noted clutch killers. In the next couple of weeks, I'll do a decent photo shoot and writeup of my overall impressions of the car. No plans to sell the ZHP, she's a keeper and I have too much invested at this point to walk away.

On the flip side... I actually got both of our vehicles back yesterday afternoon... Neither was free, but overall, both are running beautifully again and the bank isn't completely broken...

So, last night I went down to my buddy's house to work on his Exocet project (google it if you need!). Him and his wife own the two cars up front, my M3 in back, and our other buddy's M3 in back (Melbourne Red). The F10 is a new addition, its a 2014, FULLY loaded with competition package... I took it out and drove it and holy crap on fire!!! That thing is a complete animal!!!

Now, I regularly drive the X5///M and I have no problem driving that thing like a sports car. Its brutally fast, accelerates like nobody's business, and sticks hard due to AWD and the insanely wide tires... Now, the M5 has MORE power (575hp vs. 555hp in the X5///M), two less drive wheels, and about 2000 pounds less weight. That kind of power is essentially unusable... In M Dynamic Mode (some slip but still some assistance) the ass end is ALL OVER the place... The acceleration is brutal, and being coupled to the glorious DCT transmission, it is just such an insane performer... It makes the E90 M3 feel like a Honda. Hell, it makes the X5///M feel reasonable...

Wow, what a car... My buddy's car is a completely loaded car ($119k sticker price), Singapore Grey with Silverstone leather, an absolutely beautiful combo. His car did not get the Competition wheels, which I would have preferred, but still, no fault based on that. I am in love with that thing...

And on a side note, it makes me want to retrofit a DCT into the X5///M. And there's a guy selling a DCT transmission on the M3 forum... :shifty

Refresh those FCABS & shocks and whatever else might be shot, and you'll be amazed at how it can transform the car.

I agree with a lot of that. The E39 and the E46 are very different cars even though they're from the same general era. While it's not exactly your M5, I drove my father's E39 540i occasionally for years (he's owned it since new, almost 18 years old now). It's a fantastic long distance car, incredibly comfortable seats, quiet on the highway, has sufficient low down torque (320 ft-lbs) that is very accessible and makes passing easy, and a great engine sound. It was very capable in the bends, definitely more power than I'd ever need on the street. It was my performance benchmark. And I thought it had the best steering feel but all I had to compare it to were econoboxes, my inherited C4 Audi S4, my sister's Jetta, a friend's Saab 93, another friend's Mini, my mother's Volvo S40, etc. Then I got my '03 330Ci and although it lacked the torque of the 540i, it felt nimbler and more focused. Now that I'm in the ZHP, it's magnified. Stepping out of the ZHP into the 540i shows me how much more poised the E46 is than the 540i. It's got a much shorter ratio steering rack (I think the non-ZHP is 15.4, ZHP has 13.7:1, the E39 540i had 17.9(!), and the E39 M5 had 14.7) and weighs a lot less. The 540i has a fat ass that it likes to shake if you give it the chance. I didn't know the E46 and E39's used different steering mechanisms, but it would help explain some of the difference in feel.

All that said, they're different cars for different things. I am incredibly envious of your new (to you) M5. I've ridden in the friend of a friend's and it was an absolute hoot. Maybe not as precise as our ZHPs, but in some ways more exciting. And that V-8 :drools

Ouch. The i3 still hasn't been in for anything.... yet... knocking on wood. The tint shop did scratch both back windows though and has agreed to have them replaced. I hope I can talk the dealer into giving me a loaner when that goes down.

----

Just got back from a week in Tampa, Indian Rocks Beach to be more specific. Left the i3 in the garage, was happy to see her when I returned. Somehow (mass amounts of alcohol) I had forgotten about the rear windows issue (see above, the tint shop scratched them both, they have to be replaced by the dealer) while on vacation. So my happiness was cut off short by remembering that my 3 month old car has to be torn apart in the near future. BMW saved a TON of weight by using very few clips, bolts and screws on the i3. The car is aluminum, CFRP and plastic and mostly glued together. While the glass is relatively inexpensive ($165 each by my research) I don't know what the labor will be or what all will have to be done to replace them which makes me angst. The two of four doors that were opened up on my ZHP eventually had vapor barrier seal failures and of course there were rattles in that car which some might or might not have also came from being opened up. I hope to have this car just as long (9 years) so having her torn apart at 3 months is not sitting with me too well. On the other hand, accidents happen and at least the tint shop has agreed to take car of the damage.

EDIT: Also, I think I have talked my better half into taking my i3 and me getting a white one. I have to get this window situation worked out and figure out how to transfer the vehicle but we might end up a two BMW household in a month or two!

I am really not sure how it happened, the tire lost about 10-15 psi everyday and when I got it inspected, realized it was cracked...

Yeah, as you can see, the X5 is in service again, same check engine light code. This time they brought in the BMW field service engineer and he started mentioning software compatibility issues. Apparently BMW continues to update a vehicle's software, even after that generation has completed production (for instance my E70). As you replace parts years down the road, the new parts may not be compatible with the older software in the vehicle. So, the DMTL pump that was just installed would've been set for 2015 software. Well, my X5 has 2013 software, so the engineer was saying that a full update might help everything talk to each other more cohesively and not throw the CEL. We'll see. He mentioned this being an issue a few years back with the older 7 series, to the point where they had to replace all the trap modules after updating software... But he said it's a very rare occurrence on the E70. Hoping for the best.

Ha, they threw new software at my i3 trying to cure its CEL this week too. I think I might have cleared the CEL's when I cleared the other errors after coding. And then I lost all of the coding when they updated to the July 2015 software update. I'm not sure how long I can put up with the nag screens but I'm going to try to put up with them long enough to see if the CEL comes back. I had been successfully keeping it away by running the REx once or twice per week for 5-10 miles. I'd like to not have to do that, but then part of me thinks it might actually be good to run it once or twice per week anyway. We'll see...

Any particular reason?? Or just looks??

The BBS CH's and the Apex ARC-8's both look very good and suit our cars quite well in my opinion. Even so, there are two reasons I'm planning to go with the ARC-8's over the CH's.

Weight: The ARC-8's in 18x8.5" weigh around 18.5 lbs. The BBS wheels in the same size are something like 24-25 lbs, which is pretty close to the stock 135's (26-27 lbs). Years ago my father bought his NA Miata and I got to drive it around for a while before he swapped to a set of smaller diameter BBS wheels that weighed a lot less. The difference in handling was night and day. Where bumps used to unsettle the car, it was now planted over those same bumps. It used to be easy to break the back end loose, now it handles neutral like a go-kart. I'm hoping that getting a lighter wheel will have a similar effect on my car. I also plan to get new rubber (Continential ExtremeContact DW) when I get my wheels which should shed another couple of pounds over my current Toyo tires. Finally, I purchased a set of BMW Performance drilled rotors a while ago which supposedly save 3 lbs in each corner in the front and about 0.5 lbs in each corner of the rear. Combine all of those and I should drop about 13-5 lbs per corner and hopefully gain some improved handling/ride.
Price: ARC-8's new are $289 a wheel, not including shipping. New BBS CH's are something like $400-500 new. I'm sure I could find them used for cheaper, but I'd like to have new wheels. The added benefit of "saving" (relative) some money is that I (hopefully) won't be forced to sell my set of 135s. Finally, although I am perfectly happy spending money on making my car look good, I prefer to improve its performance first, so to me the $1200 spent on Apex's will feel like money more well spent than the $2,000 for new BBS' that weigh only slightly less than our stock wheels.

Those are my priorities, but for other people it can very well be different! Just my thoughts.

well, you'd see different handling characteristics because of that (likely less understeer, but turn-in might feel crappy due to squishy sidewalls), but that wouldn't affect actual suspension reaction time.

Gotcha. It'll be different this winter...I went from the shitty runflats to the Blizzaks and was relieved to be on them. Going from the SS's to them will be more of a hit in the handling department. But... LSD + Blizzaks + Snow = Happy Dan.

On the public streets compared to my 19" OEM wheels I only felt that his car picked up speed and slowed down a tad faster but it wasn't a "God" moment. Huh, weird, BP. I definitely noticed the difference in my father's Miata. It feels much more planted now, especially over uneven surfaces and he hasn't changed any other suspension components. It also helped in my buddy's Mini a bit, although I haven't driven that car that much so I can't speak from too much experience there. Either way it can't hurt to shed unsprung weight.

Driving my friend's older '01 E46 ///M with possibly old VANOS seals made a bigger difference compared to my car since his felt really sluggish on the low end. LOL.

I don't think the mass saved from lighter wheels will improve the straight-line speed much. It might feel a little more "reactive" due to lower rotational mass, but I always assumed it was negligible unless the wheels you were coming from were made of lead or something.

Anyways, that should be enough input from both sides for San to decide on wheels!

I noticed a big change in acceleration and braking going from style 135s to 17" arc-8. Read my review in this forum.

They're well worth it.

A friend of mine was interested in buying his first BMW. I advised him to shoot for a ZHP. He sent me this today:
