Awesome. My biological father (I was adopted and didn't meet him until about 9 years ago) went to UCSF for dental school. He is an orthodontist up in Santa Rosa. He swears round Ortho was the best advice he got as he was considering career paths. Good luck and study hard!

Very nice! I wish we could trade in our CR-V for one, maybe once we sell the better half's condo. But then again, the CR-V is paid for, loaded with every option (except 4wd) and is such a great vehicle. Its difficult to rationalize trading in a paid-off vehicle for a CPO x3 or x5 and going in debt. We'll see!

Rovert
08-24-2014, 11:12 AM
That's why my parents have kept their 2000 Town & Country minivan! It's the vehicle we use to load cargo and people with all the options and still a mint leather/suede interior. The cherry on top is that it's AWD so with winter rubber this van doesn't get stuck in the deep stuff! Drifting the van in the snow is so easy because it has no fancy traction control....LOL. Maintenance is hardly nil on this van vs something way more high tech!

I took a few final scenic shots before she gets picked up. Pickup is scheduled for Monday afternoon, but the car was clean and we recently had the landscapers trim up all of our trees... So, a freshly cleaned up yard, and new look on the house, and a clean car all make for some pretty nice farewell shots. :)

It's wider than what is supposed to be (or is recommended) for the e46 OEM racks. Took a bit of modification to get it to look right.

Amazon.com

It's wider than what is supposed to be (or is recommended) for the e46 OEM racks. Took a bit of modification to get it to look right.

--Marcus

does it help with fuel economy when you've got the rack on?

i had our rack + thule roof carrier on for a trip last month, fuel economy went from 32mpg average on the highway to about 25mpg. we have a 3000km trip coming up, anything i can do to increase fuel economy would be great!

How wide is that Thule faring? I am going to need to get one now since I installed an oem bmw roof rack on the wifes car today.

44"

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00152SA72/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I need to make a cheat-sheet for items on my car. I get wheel and tire spec questions about once a week and roof-rack fairing questions about once a month, lol.

All of the attachments have to be modified to mount to the OEM bar, the outer two need extra modification to make it look "right" at first it was kinda goofy looking, straight as an arrow, I had to modify it more to get the bow/arch in it.

Hope that helps!

Mildly interesting 1am back story:
I guess that this picture was so epic, two cops showed up to admire my work :p ..anyways I think it was worth it (but you guys can be the judges of that) It's Thursday night, at 1:00 am, I looked and looked for a deserted place and finally settled on this residential back road. I parked purposely so people could maneuver around me and also see me (as I was right under a street light). Three people went by and minded their own business, one person waved, and the neighborhood security patrol even passed me by, uninterested. I had no conflicts with anyone, nor did anybody that I encountered even so much as mumble a complaint... yet this is Marin County so after only 5 pictures, two annoyed cops showed up. They pulled up behind my car, lights flashing, and very aggressively ask me what I was doing. I responded that I was taking pictures for a project, that the pictures had to be at night, and this seemed like the best possible (and safest) time to take them. He replied "what!?.. You can't park in the street". I told him that I knew, and I was sorry and it was only for a couple minutes (it's not like I left my car there, I was literally 4 feet away) - I meant no harm but he said "I don't care, what are you doing parked in the middle of the street!? You can't park in a street, man!" At this point I just wanted to leave so I told him that I was done, that I was very sorry, and that I was leaving right away. The two cops kindly escorted me to the nearest intersection - where they pulled up next to each other and talked while I drove off down the road. To be honest, I doubt they got the call because someone saw me in the street. But I'd be willing to bet that someone saw me drive up and down the street a couple of times, very slowly (because I was in no rush, and I was looking for the ideal place), and assumed I was intoxicated (because why else would anyone drive 10 mph under the speed limit at 1am). agh.. Anyways, shooting at night is fun and rewarding. Next time however, I will be far far away from and people whom my actions might offend.

Mine? With my garage door opener light reflecting on the car and all of the garage hoarding/crap around the car?

Thanks!

Most of the plates are mine, but some friends have started sending me some of theirs. I would like to have at least one from each state eventually. I thought hanging them like I have would give them more interest. I actually plan to take them all down, mount an LCD TV on that wall, then re-position them around the TV. All in due time.

Unfortunately you won't get any from CT, unless someone wants to keep their car registered and pay tax on it!

I wonder if there's a way to "lose" the plate... :shifty

And Marcus, not sure if you have a wall big enough, but if so, here's my idea. Draw a giant map of the US on the wall with black paint (just state outlines) and then put each plate on the wall within the respective state. Obviously you'll have to do some creative placement for all those silly little states in the Northeast, but whatever... :rofl :biggrin

Met some other cool folks this morning as well who live just down the street from me, spent the day wrenching with them on their E36 M3 track cars, as well as assisting with replacing the FSR on the E46 M3. Drove it as well. First time driving an E46 M3 with the SMG transmission...

Can't say I would go out of my way to own one with that, but it was fun nonetheless...just a "little" jerky around town. When you get on it though and using the launch control it definitely shines!

What setting was the transmission at? I recently learned (on ZHPM!) that the harshness of the shift is adjustable.

We did both full (DTC off, max setting) and the lowest setting, DTC on, etc. The only way the max setting felt great was going at it, and the "low" setting still jerked around a bit. Weird...is the best way I can describe it, not bad mind you, but just weird. From driving manual cars my whole life...it's not something I'd want to deal with, I was doing the phantom clutch press at stoplights and slowing down my brain felt like downshifting. I guess, that is a good thing that it emulates what I feel driving the 6MT, but it is more of both a pro and a con as far as I'm concerned when the manual is just that much easier to deal with, financially/reliability/overall feel wise.

So there are a lot of car enthusiast in this lil town. Pack a bunch of Brits, Germans, and Americans together in a state with almost zero vehicle regulation and you see a lot of neat things. On my way back home I managed to see this.. And I swear from now on my camera goes in the car with me EVERY time I leave my house. A very nice German fellow owned it and let me take some photos and geek all over it. He even let me slide in the lil ole ZHP next to it for some shots :).

I wonder if he would have to file a police report. Cool idea, I don't think I have the room for that in this garage, maybe in a future garage (~3 car, would need taller ceilings too). Saw a mashup of plates similar to your description at the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, TN. If any of you guys ever visit Nashville, its a great little place to check out.

Some kind of waterless cleaner/wax that was sold to me at a pop up tent in a gas station once lol. I'll have to find the name when I get home. It works pretty well. Ah thanks. It looks lowered in that pic, must be the shadows/dark hiding the wheel gap.

John,

I installed a dropped suspension on my first E46, a then new 2000 323i - I was into autocrossing then and it was a pretty good performer with the new suspension, but here in the northeast, particular CT (we have the worst roads in the nation), the ride was punishing - even my stock ZHP is pushing it, driving it into NYC with 18's always gives me some worry. If I were to do it again, my track car would be a separate entity.

Your car looks nice - I was in LA this past June and the roads are perfect for a dropped car, but the slow, slow, slow average driving speeds (thanks to traffic) drive me nuts :)

johnrando

Nice detail, thanks. Yes, the road speeds here are usually higher than many places UNLESS you're in traffic, and then it's a crawl. So, the secret of course is to time your drives around traffic, which is increasingly hard to do. There aren't many places who's traffic flows faster than here when things are moving so I know what you mean as I consistently travel to other places and it drives me crazy (no pun intended) on how slow people drive elsewhere.

You got that right; we sure do have some of the worst roads. This is usually more of a problem on back roads but driving through NYC makes me want to stab myself.

Nice. I bought a few cans of this stuff at a gas station. I was sold after they tried it on the inside part of my wheels, which I never clean. It came out spotless. I was very impressed!

This also works amazingly well on the tire marks I get when I get back from a track event. It takes me hours to clay bar that stuff out. This Fast Wax stuff removes it effortlessly!

Sometimes Sonax just doesn't cut it, for when the brake dust is reeeeeeeeeeally stuck on there.

Cannot comment on other applications, but do NOT use Fast Wax 1 on plastic headlight lenses! I agreed to the gas station demonstration: they cleaned my passenger rear quarter panel and windows, as well as my passenger headlight lens. The paint and glass were fine, but a few months later my headlight lens was pitted as all heck! Even tried RainX’s headlight restorer, to no avail.

Wow that 318ti looks great. I had a chance to buy one, got to drive it all I wanted, from my boss. It was an extra car of hers that she bought for a family member that didn't want a manual. She kept it at work (a secure facility) and I would sometimes leave mine and take hers home. Kinda regret not buying it, don't regret selling it for her and collecting a $400 commission though. Was very generous considering the sales price.

Amazing what some nice wheels and a tint job can do for a car. The car I'm talking about would have needed additional work.

Thanks guys,

A little in site on the ///M roadster:

Our Son-in-Law started clearing out his Honda collection aback in July. This consisted of, a clean S2000 and a daily driver Acord. First went the S2000 and quickly replaced with a WRX with a quick flight to Florida for pickup of the new DD. Next out was the Acord leaving an empty space in the garage. We had talked in great depth of the many possibilities for this now empty space.

Shortly after this started to take place; my Brother-in-Law, wife & 1 daughter came down to TN for a visit. In conversation, he told me about the roadster that a guy he worked wanted to sell and the possible price {great deal} but, my stable was full and I didn’t have a screaming desire to make the jump.

In the short time after their visit, we had the family emergence and all of us ended up in the Cleveland, OH area. Conversation continued with my Brother-in-Law, that I moved to my Son-in-Law and within a few days my Son-in-Law was making arrangements to check out the car. Due to other obligations, I wasn’t able to go with him. Apparently, it met the needs of the buyer and seller and the deal was struck and finalized today, with the Son-in-Law taking a $10.00 Megabus ride from Cicy, to Cleveland to finish the deal. Not sure if he’s on the road heading back tonight or tomorrow.

Shawn, I'm assuming you meant to say "so they double layer"..... If so, then not really. The OEM privacy glass is a coloring in the glass, not any actual film like tint. So, we had them do a single film of the Llumar AirBlue 80 just to help with heat. I don't know how much of the heat and UV the OEM stuff blocks, but I do know that our first weekend with the X was sweltering, and you could really feel it inside. So, considering it's almost 100% clear, I said go for it. It made a huge improvement on the 328d we had. And lifetime warranty...

Once the weather shows signs of constant rain then I'll switch to my Conti DW's from my old car. It's nice to have low tread in the dry because there is just so much grip and less tread movement when turning in quick.

It's interesting that you say that because a Michelin rep / tire tester I spoke with claims that when a tire is brand new, with 0 miles on it, that is when it is at its absolute best. Their testing proves it...

That's what she said, at least. She tests the tires herself as well so I believe it. It came up when one of the people on my trip asked if tires have to be broken in when new and her answer was no, as a result of the testing they did.

BP I always thought if race cars have slicks in the dry and tread in the wet, that applied to any rubber burning machine. LOL. The amount of grip I get from these RE050 tires is fantastic right now and it's nice and predictable on edge as well as when it's left the edge. Haha.

One thing I will enjoy is the extra tread of my DW's for cushioning small/sharp bumps. Having much less tread on the current rubber is somewhat jarring at times.
