View Full Version : How fast will a ZHP go?

What is the top speed you have attained driving your ZHP?
I know this sounds a little bit like Kindergarten-type question, but how fast will a non-modified ZHP go? I realize the wiki and FAQ pages say 155 mph, but has anyone really gone that fast on or off track?
I live in an area with a lot of hills and curves, so there are few places to really wind it up to top speed. Fastest so far for me was 127 mph.

I've never jumped on my ZHP. Fastest I've had it is 100 MPH. It has a 155 MPH limiter but I imagine you'd only see that speed if no one was around for miles -- and you had an open road to climb to that speed.

The fastest I've been is 110 MPH and I felt like a complete ass after I pulled that off.
Its limited to 155 but with aftermarket software that removes the limiter, I believe some people have seen the lower 160's on a GPS.

Been to 130 on i5 to avoid cow smell, and as stated before, felt like an ass afters and went back down to my usual cruise speed on i5.

70. Any more than that would be exceeding the posted speed limit. :foottap
I'm not really sure how fast I've gone in this car. I opened it up a bit on I-29 in North Dakota where you can see ahead for miiiiiiles. I'm pretty sure it was at least 130. Anything higher than that and I'm chicken on the street. Just too risky. Unfortunately, top speed at the tracks around here for these cars is only 110.
125+, did it both Mid-Ohio & Nelson Ledges. The back straight @ Mid-Ohio is approximately 3,000 foot long (.56 miles). The track makes a 90 deg. right from there and if you miss you land in the sand/gravel trap known as "China Beach" When a sand trap has a name , you know it's bad! I really wanted to know exactly how fast I was going but, never had the guts to take my eyes off the track. I've done the 1/4 @ 97mph red-line in third, on the back straight I was well in to 4th before I saw the brake markers.

I've done 135 at BIR, but that certainly wasn't top speed.

130 in mine, while a buddy in a 977 Porsche and I played in the long and windy roads and hills outside of PHX

I know I don't have a ZHP, but I have the same differential as you guys with a manual.
But I got to 162 as per the GPS.

When I was back in Germany (on 9 Munich to Berlin) I had my speedometer maxed out at +/-155 mph, and the limiter never kicked in, while the Tach showed only around +/-5800 RPM. There was not much more gas pedal or oomph left in the car, you can feel the car was already at the drag limit.

i hit 125 once but then quickly went back down thinking it was at its limit but now i read this and have plans.

Are you sure that limiter wasn't cutting power? That's a lot like what the limiter does; cuts power and it feels like there's nothing left. I'm willing to bet that if you had some performance software that takes out the limiter, you'd see an easy 270-280km/h if you give it some space to stretch its legs.

Yes, I'm fairly sure about the limiter not cutting in. I did it few times just to make sure I actually maxed out the speedo. Now, if I kept it there for a while longer I guess I could have gone a hair faster BUT it was very slow from about 150mph on to get to a hair past 155mph mark on so I think it was very close to the top end (+/- speedo error). The real surprise was that the RPM was still fairly low for the top end, so maybe if I droped the gear down one. I did have my DME software reflashed/updated at a German BMW dealer during my tour when I used to get the engine ck light after normal autobahn driving. BTW, I am going back this summer so I should be able to duplicate, although this time I am adding a turbo.

As for me...I've had the 328 up to 127mph gps confirmed. Just a mile/hour short of the limiter kicking in :( Need to get that removed for future activities...:shifty

I've done ~150-155
Not really sure, the speedometer wasn't exactly the main thing I was focusing on. Shit goes by quick at that speed. I noticed it was really quiet other than the engine and the car itself felt the same as if it would if I were going 80. Very nice and smooth, very impressed.

145~ in the ZHP, not to proud of that though, I wanted to hit the limiter but there are very few times in the state of RI where reaching that kind of speed is capable without any cars around. However the fastest I've been in an automobile is 165 in my buddys 90' Twin Turbo 300zx.

Went 125 on Saturday. It was still pulling hard and the ride was perfectly smooth.

I was on my way back from Bar Harbor last summer, late on a Sunday afternoon in August... I found some nice long straight sections of Rte. 95 and was cruising, comfortably at 100 - 115 for several minutes at a time, and stretching to 125-130 at times. Plenty of left in the car, and very composed at that speed... I only saw a couple of 18-wheelers, the road was nearly deserted. Of note, the pavement was also in exceptional shape. No cracks, repairs, or anything of any kind. Makes for really nice driving at high velocity. The north and south bound lanes are separated by about 50 yards of tall and dense forest, you can't even see the cars going in the other direction. The only thing I was worried about was a moose wandering out onto the road... I then took it down to about 75 and kept it there.

Had the ZHP up to 161.4 gps confirmed somewhere in "Mexico" on a straight and empty road at about 1:30am. I think I was pretty much drag limited at that point. Car felt smooth though, but no point in doing that again, cause I have already done it. :)
I went past '13' in my Dinan-delimited 325i; it was scary-stable and composed.
In the ZHP, I've been careful not to do silly things that could cost me my license, but my three-year-old daughter and I still like to take cloverleafs and diminishing-radius turns at (theoretically-legal) speeds that would give less-agile cars pause...

Made that same run on my motorcycle. Only place outside of Canada that I've cruised at 100+. We didn't see more than a handful of cars over a 40 minute run.
I was having the same nervous thoughts about moose, though.

Open road out west, flat with no posted speed limit, I eeked out 145.. and I let off. I knew the supposed limit was 155, but it wasn't gaining anything and I felt no need to beat up the driveline anymore than I already had. Was also a little concerned about the potential for a tire blowout in the middle of the desert.

or 143MPH. That took a long time to get to and it seemed like it was taking it time after 130mph. So I decided to let off just in case I did a police fly by...It seems the car is more drag limited. It might have been easier to get to a higher rate of speed when the air is less dense, meaning hot weather. This was a cool evening to I had a lot more air to push through at that speed. I'd love to bring the car to the salt flats and just go since I feel like I'd need a few miles. My limiter was removed after software upgrades so I'd love to know how quick the car can actually move when time lets the engine slowly rev up.

+/-155 on my way back from Vegas when I first bought the car, haven't gone all out in a long time now. Now that I think about it I made that trip in under 4 hours so avg of ~85 from the parking lot to my driveway

I hit 140 on the way to Vegas, but ran out of gears. Doesn't take long with the 3.38 gears. Even with 3 passengers and all their luggage.
Their idea btw... Not mine :)

Yep. There are plenty of stretches on the 15 (freeway) where you can do 155. Lots of CHPs patrolling the area, though. Have to be careful.
