The light is on, my mech said I need a new one...
About a year ago the little cable that attaches the cap to the car broke...
Does the cable have anything to do with this or do these caps just lose their seal over time?
And can I get anything or and better model/version?

The seal does go bad on the cap. They are not an expensive item to purchase.

I just replaced my gas cap, but only because the security “strap” broke.
I ordered a new cap off FCP Euro but they are roughly 20-30 bucks for a new one, cheap

Yes, they can lose their seal as well and let air into the fuel system which can trigger an engine light. When a gas cap is working correctly, it will seal completely that is why sometimes you hear a hiss from when you open some gas caps.

FCP Euro was either pricier or hard to find right fit for some reason.
