View Full Version : Another Airbag Recall?

Here we go again.....Just got an email for another recall regarding airbags. This time it's the inflator... how does Takata stay in business?

Summary:

PASSENGER'S FRONT AIR BAG: This recall is for vehicles which have already had the Takata PSPI passenger front air bag replaced as part of a previous recall. During air bag deployment in an accident, the passenger's front air bag module may produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to explode.

the email:

To:you Details
U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Your vehicle MAY be involved in a safety recall and MAY create a safety risk for you or your passengers. If left unrepaired, a potential safety defect could lead to injury or even death. Safety defects must be repaired by a dealer at no cost to you.

Why am I getting this email?

The BMW Store Cincinnati may do what they did with my driver side airbag and put me on a "list" of first come first serve callers and then give me a ring when the parts come in.

Dang! Hope I receive this letter too.

It sucks to have to do it, but parts of me appreciate going to dealership and get out of there for free! Especially as I have never bought a BMW from a BMW dealer.

Thanks for the heads-up

I called the BMW Store in Cincinnati and they are apparently aware of this recall, but don't have the parts in yet. I don't know how I will be notified when the parts are in at the dealer, so I guess I'll have to check periodically via the phone.

I would anticipate that I'll probably get this done in late February or March, hell, maybe even early spring if it goes the same way as the airbag replacement went.

Edit: thank you for posting the link for the VIN check

Thank you for bringing that to our attention. I was not aware of that and I did not recieved anything yet.
I am on the same boat as Charlie, where both airbags were replaced, but nothing was done to the inflators.
I hope nerds at Jalopnik will post something about that.

I guess I’m sorta lucky as I haven’t been to the dealer yet for the airbag recall. I called a few months ago about the mobile service they offer for recalls. They only do the drivers side airbag and not the passenger side so you still need to go to the dealer. This is just plain stupid. Now this BS...UGH.

Dealer confirmed this recall using my VIN and they told me they don’t have the parts yet (not surprised to hear this) so I told them I was not in a hurry since my M3 is in hibernation status. The dealer said great and told me I could bring my M3 later in February when they will have the parts to do the recall so I got my M3 scheduled in.

I have not yet received anything, but I called the closest local dealer, South Bay BMW, and scheduled the service. The weird thing is they said it could take "days, as they are backed up"... so I'm thinking, why schedule it until you can do it? Regardless, at least they knew about it, and it's scheduled. Thanks for the notice!

we may have to watch for recalls on the other cars in our garages.... This from USAToday last week:

DETROIT – Takata is recalling 10 million more front air bag inflators sold to 14 different automakers because they can explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel.

The recall is the last one the bankrupt company agreed to in a 2015 settlement with the U.S. safety regulators. It could bring to a close the largest series of automotive recalls in U.S. history.

The 10 million inflators are part of the approximately 70 million in the U.S. that Takata was to recall as part of the agreement with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Vehicles made by Audi, BMW, Honda, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler, Ferrari, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen are affected.

Automakers will determine what models are affected and launch their own recalls. Some already have made the announcements.

This is a new recall to replace the defective airbags that they installed as a result of the last recall. Can't make it up...
------------------
Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2005 323iT, 325iT, 325xiT, 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 330i and 330xi and 2000-2006 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, M3 Coupe, 323Cic, 325Cic, 330Cic, and M3 Convertible vehicles equipped with non-desiccated frontal Takata PSAN inflators and PSPI passenger frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger's front air bag, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 6, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

you're not making it up, that was always the plan. From the FAQ's:

Q4. Why is this recall just coming out now?

The recall schedule follows the guidelines published by NHTSA in the May 2016 amended Takata Recall Coordinated Remedy Order.

Q5. If I had my passenger front air bag module replaced prior, do I need to have it replaced again?

Yes. This final replacement part is ammonium–nitrate free. Please contact your authorized BMW center immediately to schedule an appointment to have this important free repair performed as soon as possible.

Got my letter today referencing Recall Campaign No. 19V-853: Driver's Air Bag Inflator (NADI) for certain model year 1999-2001 3-series vehicles. They will inspect the driver air bag inflator and, if necessary, replace it with a newly designed inflator (approx. 1 hour repair).

The NHTSA site shows the following for the 2002 325xi and 2006 330ic:
1 Unrepaired Recalls associated with this VIN
Jan 15,2020
Manufacturer Recall Number - NA
NHTSA Recall Number - 20V018

Called my local dealer today and they could schedule me but stated that I needed to drop my car off and leave it for 24 hours. I told them that wasnt an option and that the replacement of the recalled item shouldnt take that long (I waited when I had my driver side airbag done). The girl on the phone continued to insist that I needed to leave the car to which I continued to reply that I cant do that.

Going to call back tomorrow and talk to someone else who is willing to schedule me for a same day return, shouldnt take that damn long to replace and I dont trust my car being left anywhere, even if its the dealer.

There were definitely some things I didn’t like; The seats were not as comfortable as the ZHP, and the size - it felt really big. The hood line was noticeably higher from the cockpit. Exhaust note was surprisingly good though for a turbo 6...

That's interesting because when I set up my appointment to have my M3 serviced later this month, I had no problem having a loaner set up for when I took my car in for this recall service. They asked me if I required a loaner and I immediately said yes and they told me I would have one when I took my car in.

You've got to know how to play the game with regards to loaners.
For me it's not deliberate; the only time I can take my car in is after work, which is after 4 pm. They won't do the work on the car by the time they receive it (probably after 5 pm after all is said and done) so I always end up with a loaner overnight.

Truth! Scheduling the work enough in advance has always put us in a loaner.

Just got mine done at the dealership. Went in for an oil change since I didn't have time to do it myself and found out that they no longer offer the value oil change making this visit a whopping $185. Of course I'd rather run a few extra miles on old oil than pay that so I then asked about the recall. Seems like they were not going to offer it to me if I didn't ask. Luckily they had airbags in stock and performed the recall

You need to get an Oil Extractor. Makes oil changes so much easier!
