I don't know how I missed this, but just noticed there are 2 different Dash Tray options. When I bought my car, the door on the tray above the ashtray was so scratched that I decided to replace it. I ordered the exact replacement "51168202188 Front Insert with Cover" and that's my car in the image on the left.
I was just looking at a posting for someone selling a ZHP and see that their tray door opens in the other direction? And I now see on Realoem that that's a different option " 51168260312 Tray for Glasses"
What's up with that?

Australian version - it's so your glasses don't fall up

Well, the action of pulling your shades out of the tray and putting them on your face is an "upward" action"
Really can't imagine the advantage of one over the other though (4 vs 15) :dunno

just looked at all of the ZHP convertibles that have been on Bringatrailer. All of them have the type that opens from the top....... unlike mine

I believe the one with the chrome strip at the top/hinge at the bottom (#15) is newer - works much better & less chance of scraping the soft finish off the cover!

Hopefully I am not spreading incorrect info but I seem to recall figuring out several years ago that one version is for the cabriolets aka convertibles and the other is for sedans and coupes.

Thanks, I think you're correct. Looking at the fitment list in Realoem, it shows as a retrofit to every E46 model except E46 and M3 convertibles
Solved, and I clearly installed the wrong part. Makes mine rare...... :blink
Might be popular in Australia though :facepalm
I've had both in my conv. It came with the 'sunglasses' one with the strip on top, and it was all scuffed so I replaced it with the cubby one with the strip on the bottom. I wanted more space to store things--it's a bigger space behind the door.
