As an FYI, I got a replacement mirror motor from Tischer for about 180 shipped. They have the hands down best price; it was in the 160's pre-shipping.

Note: you don't HAVE to buy the motors to do the swap as these are just the stock ZHP motors with the ribbon connector. If you have a ribbon connector, just swap the motor with cable into the M3 housing.

It's finally back in business :jump

I received the correct mirror on Saturday, only to find that the screw holes were not tapped. I was told that this is normal.

I drove down to the BMW dealership today to see if I can get it tapped for me. After talking to about 5 different people, one experienced mechanic said, "Oh yeah, you just take the screw and manhandle it in there. The housing is aluminum, it won't strip the screws."

So, I listened to him, jammed those screws in with a drill, and it worked flawlessly. I guess the screws are self-tapping. Weird.

I noticed a terrible cracking noise every time I opened and closed my door from its maximum travel. I found that a small hinge or something seemed to be loose. It is held in by an external torx, but if you have a matrix socket you can find one that will fit it just fine. I tightened it up, and no more noise. I can only assume that the cold weather loosened up the screw. The car ran a little rough when I first started it, but it had also been sitting for a good 2-3 weeks doing nothing. After taking it for a drive back home, it is just fine.

I am thinking of shortening the plastic surrounds by an inch so the alcantara fits the CSL console when it comes... is that the only difference Charlie? Or is it also narrower as well?

the actual baseplate shape is different and the shape of the boot is also different Kris. When I put on the new boot, everything fit in perfect compared to the old boot. Hope this answers your question...yes, the CSL boot is a little narrower compared to the original boot.

So I did a valve cover gasket 2 weeks ago and since then got an SES, rough idling, and some interesting acceleration issues.

I take it into the shop today and got to try out the 535 for the first time (not bad).

Shop calls back and says that the cyclone seperator was failed and it destroyed the new VCG. They then said belts were almost gone and the plugs weren't the right kind. I told them to go ahead and fix everything and the bill ran me to $1473. Well the car still has some weird idling at stop lights on the way home so I'm going to call them back tomorrow and tell them the rough idle is still there but everything else feels better.

As it stand right now the control arm bushings are worn down too and when i jump on my brakes the steering wheel jumps slightly to the right... so that's my next future endeavor... for now my credit card is screaming for a break.

I was thinking of getting the reinforcement plates as a temporary solution (they're only $25) to my right tower starting to mushroom. I will eventually get a brace but until I find one I want this will do. One question... Do they mount on the top or bottom of the tower, I can't find a picture with them installed.

I spilled pink lemonade powerade all over my seat because I thought it was the bottle sweating. My leather did this cool beading up thing which made it easy to clean up with a microfiber. Maybe I can attribute that to the new coat of Black Magic Leather Cleaner I applied the other day..

Yes, Crank Case Vent Valve. Did they determine if the valve was failed or if the return line was clogged?

I think it was more likely a pothole I hit a while ago. The roads by my house were in terrible shape about a year ago, I didn't notice it until recently.

John, i mounted it with self tapping screws, if you look at the bottom of your seat, you would see the mounting holes...

move your seat all the way to the back and up... supposed to use 3 screws to mount it, but i only used 2, pretty sturdy...

Installed my ///M pedals. In about...maybe 40 min. At my age, my bad back has always my achilles heel. Found out that the clutch pedal is made of plastic. ///M footrest next.....


edit: Another WTF moment....Chalk another one for the bean counters. Plastic Clutch Pedals......WTF!

My mom has that 128i in Alpine White. It handles like its on rails, not even a sport package either. The engine is stronger than mine, but because it's an auto when you stomp on the pedal it goes "huh? oh right lets go!". Fun car though.

I had an Alpine White 128i loaner with 6 speed and sports package. It was very impressive.... more like an e46 than the e9x... That will probably be our next car

Then I threw a layer of pre winter wax on the hood, roof and trunk lid. Dr. Colorchiped the whole car. That stuff is awesome - no idea why I waited so long to try it. I'll do better with it next time and get something to FILL the dings better. For now, though, they look a lot better.

New filter sounds quieter than the old one. Also cleaned up the interior and engine bay while I was at it.

Thursday = turkey and winter wheels.

It's a Napa Gold p/n 6301, made by Wix. If the OEM is also made by Mann it looks to me like they are made to a higher spec than their consumer filter is.

labor ended up coming to $392 for the ssk though. so FYI to those considering. although the DIY is 6-8 hours of hell (so i've read) so may or may not be worth it depending on your appetite for challenge.

I have yucky shifter slop (just ask Lance, Pyreguy), I plan on doing something about it. However on the other hand I played with Lance's shifter, he's got a SSK (can't recall which) and it was too tight. I could easily see myself missing some gears. So, I agree, I like the distance between my shifts, I just need to tighten up the side to side slop.

The shifter will break in nicely after about 1K miles. Mine is so smoth now I can shift with a flick of the wrist while my arm is on the arm rest. When I drove Kpro's car, the shifter felt long and sloppy. (We replaced it with an Evo3 since then)

+1 When I first drove the car after installing it, I found that I was too slow with the clutch but after a day or so I easily compensated.

You can just get the DSSR and Delran bushings from UUC and keep the stock shifter. That should take a lot of the slop out of it.

I just installed my UUC EVO3 and DSSR yesterday. I love it, it is soo much more precise. I have it lowered all the way and the throw is pretty short, I may try raising it up all the way to try it. I measured before installing and raised all the way up is the height of the stock ZHP shifter. All the way down is 3/4" lower.

I'm not good about cleaning my car, but last night I cleaned driver's seat belt with hot soapy water (Dawn dish soap), hoping to make it retract more quickly. It's cleaner, but not sure it retracts any faster. Today I vacuumed the inside and wiped down most of the dash and console with Armor All. Finally cleaned up some of the little interior mud splatters on the B-pillar covers and sides of the seats that were leftover from my off-track excursion last December. Finally I turned around the bracket on the fire extinguisher mount so the release buckle faces forward and sliding the passenger seat forward won't block access to it. This required unbolting the passenger seat and tilting it back a little bit because the bracket sits under the front seat bolts.

Removed the wheels for a thorough cleaning of both the wheels and wheel wells. I used Sonax Wheel Cleaner which I have found is really effective but not particularly cost effective. Today I decided I will purchase a small pump-up garden sprayer to apply the cleaner. It might apply less liberally and will surely beat pumping the hell of out the original spray bottle. I can burn through a 500ml container PDQ. I recently purchased two 5 liter totes from one of our sponsors that was a real good deal (included free shipping) making the cost per application somewhat less burdensome. Good product nevertheless.

Drove down to Virginia and met Bruce (BCS_ZHP) at his place. We struggled just to get the wheels off...It was ridiculous how much they fused to the rotor hats. But everything else was smooth sailing with the wheels off. Can confidently tackle a brake job after today's afternoon.

Lol Knew that was coming I will have to take the whole airbox out to snag some pics muffler delete isn't very loud did exactly what I wanted enhanced low rpm sound till about 4 grand then falls off a bit but then the intake sound picks up so it's a nice marriage it's rainy today so pics will have to wait till I can get its a bit dryer out

Is this not normal? I use a high pressure hose to rinse, but my door seals have always been a tad moist at the bottom after a wash. Just thought that was normal.?

Just be worried when the carpet is wet after a storm. That means you need to replace your door seals.

I never, ever want to do that job again. It took me two hours longer than it should have because the space to work in around the lower intake boot is particularly cramped.

And now that I've replaced it, my car has acted particularly strangely.

Yep. I just posted about it in a thread in Mechanical/Troubleshooting. In short, car wants to stall after dropping from 2,300 RPMs and coming to a stop. Once stopped, though, it idles fine (sorta - the idle can be a bit lumpy).

Used the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit. It works wonders! $13 off of eBay. Due to the curves on our car and how the headlights are placed relative to the hood and body panels, it is somewhat difficult to restore them, especially with a coupe.

Now, when you do this, painter's tape the hell out of everything around the headlights, and I mean tape the hell out of it. It's going to be near-impossible not to get a few nicks in corners by the headlights, but you will not be able to see them at all.

Use 3-4 layers of tape, shoot even 5, all around the headlight and the top of the bumper. I did not do it on the top of the bumper for one headlight and found out the hard way. Some clear coat fixed those scratches right up.

All I had to do was take out the trim pieces then pull the center vent out. The Aux input cable was tied to a bunch of cables to the left wrapped on top. All I did was undo the wrap to free the connector and then connect my Aux input cable from the kit. Very easy.

My thread contribution: I was just outside trying to adjust my lights. I can't get them aimed directly ahead. I once made a mistake when trying to change my clears, that I was screwing the horizontal adjuster on my lights instead of the actual corner light thing. Ever since then, I can't get them right. Gets me so mad!

You have to remove the back cover of the seat. There are two plastic clips holding it onto the seat. They are located on the bottom, one on each side. You will most likely have to cut them off and find replacement clips. Once the back cover is off, you can reach up to compress the tabs to release the guide. Good luck.

It's the parents car, I don't own it, just use it. I don't want to use my car as a snowplow and my dad doesn't want me running it either. I don't want to think what 255s would be like in snow ...lol. car has been salt free and I want to keep it that way.

I spent the money for buying the snows, since I'm using it. Its been passed around in the family, 90k miles and running strong

went on a ~400 mile round trip drive over thanksgiving break. my uncle has a place in wimberley, tx. spent a few days out there, weather was perfect. really nice to get outta the city and breath some fresh air.

the car, btw, was brilliant! loving the ssk so far.

I was just driving home and I think I hit a piece of tire tread on the freeway. When I got home I saw rubber burn marks on my bumper, I lost the fog light surround on the passenger side and now my bumper is not lined up correctly (passenger side has a slight gap/sagging). I guess I know what I'm gonna be working on next... (boss - there is a possibility I might not be able to make it Saturday as I might be working on this, hopefully it will be fixed before then)

Just got done installing R/C/R LED taillights from Khoalty. Took me a few hours to 1) figure out what the hell the translated English instructions were trying to say, 2) figure out what the hell the pictures were trying to show, and 3) figure out how the hell to connect the lights on the driver's side because of a completely destroyed ground connector (of course). Luckily, because of my genius (cough), I figured out how to reroute the ground wire and make it work! I applied the same fix on the passenger side, though that one isn't destroyed (it's fine, actually). Then I swapped the white LED bulbs I was using before as brake lights into the reverse light housing for LED reverse lights (my GAWD they're bright! See project thread here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?1281-The-Itchy-Imola-Wobbie/page3)) and put the amber turn signal LED bulbs into the new housing, as unfortunately the turns aren't LED by design.

It was soooooooooooooooooo worth the swap, even though I'm on the fence about the clears. Wondering if I should just swap out the smoked fronts and sides for clears to match or to have a body shop smoke my turn signals in the back. I'm leaning toward option 2, though I'm not too fond of messing up a set of lights if they screw it up or make it too dark...:dunno

I can't do the Lamin-X because they don't sell turn-signal-only films, only ones designed for the entire taillights. I only want to smoke the turn signals, and don't feel very confident that I can cut it to size, or if I could even manage to cut it at all.

VHT is more permanent, and I also don't trust myself with that. I don't know how dark it makes it; I don't want it too dark. In fact, a little on the lighter side would be best...

You could always just use paint thinner to remove it if you don't like how it turns out

As for cutting the lamin-x, I would use a razor blade and a ruler. It might take a few passes to get it all the way through. That's basically how I cut the strips of electric tape I used on my grill to size

I did a few good things today.

Added some Chevron Fuel Injector cleaner
Filled her up with Sunoco 94oct (I figured why not, it was only $3.61.. which was less than what normal 91 has been in a while)

Now, I'm in the process of cleaning my wheel. The fabric was all caked on and was starting to feel like leather. I've been using this suede cleaner I got from Champ's Sports (shoe store) to clean my shoes..and I figured it would probably work. It seems to be doing good, just takes some work to bring up some of the fabric. I'm letting it dry a little now..and then I gotta find a fabric shaver or something to clean her up when all is said and done.

Alignment is needed when replacing certain suspension parts.

Affirmative. Alignement required everytime critical suspension parts been replaced. Also, I know that the present set-up is all aligned. Now, after I put in the new shoes and my alignment gets out of whack, then I know, the problem is coming from the shoes. I will get the best shoe with the thickest meat and mount them on the M3 wheel that I got and use as my spare tire.

JP, do you need some still good shoes...tires? Well, not really that good. I felt a slight hydroplane the last time it rained. Or maybe the road could have been slick.....let me know.

1. Hitting/running over something warrants it.

2. After replacing cabs/rsm/fsm.

I'm not sure that people are grasping what I'm trying to say lol. Usually when (normal) people get tires done, it's usually recommended to do an alignment as well. Just so your settings aren't all screwed up and you chop away your brand new rubber.

What I just found:
I think I ruined my steering wheel. Used my suede cleaner w/ an old wash cloth and it was doing alright..wasn't complaining. Just went and checked and I think that the wash cloth I was using was an old one that my mom used for cleaning (smelled like cleaning solution) I guess that smell was bleach, because now I have little dyed parts of my wheel that are coming up as it dries. Oh well, I was planning on getting a wrap from colby wheel this winter/spring anyways..so I'm not really concerned.
