View Full Version : What did you do for your ZHP/BMW today?

Well, it's been a while since I've been on the forums. What did I do to my ZHP today?
I gave it an awesome wash, interior and exterior detail. I replaced some of the rattling broken clips on the inside of my door, and I got a new clip for my exterior door moulding. Note: the BMW dealership has the wrong part number listed for the exterior door moulding clips. I brought the whole thing in and showed it to them, they were puzzled as to how it even was put together since the clips they brought out did not fit. Then they realized that the wrong part number is listed on their system, and they found me the right one.
Oh, then when I was done, I was backing it out of the garage, I did this:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/9581/3422r.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/12/3422r.jpg/)
I. Am. NOT. Happy. With myself. First time I ever have done something so stupid. And of course, I don't accidentally do it when I'm 16 and learning to drive on my mom's old minivan. No, I do it to my BMW at age 21. Currently looking for a sport-package coupe mirror base, no colored cover, no glass.
I might be able to help you here. Lookie what I found on the Craigslist here in San Diego..... Showed up just a few minutes ago. This is what you want. Cheap too.

The dealer had a spare set of tan all season mats.. so I'm currently in the process of seeing if plasti-dip will do anything good for them since I don't think i'd be able to handle the tan

Found this. I'm probably going to order one this week so I can get my car back up and running. If the glass is good, I can sell the backing and the glass to offset the cost.
If only BMW didn't change around those stupid connectors and just let them be, I could have some M3 mirrors :(
They've got...

12-pin cable
12-pin ribbon
Guess who has the harder one to find? Me with the 12-pin ribbon ><

Had my mechanic change out the leaking OEM metal impeller water pump w 16k miles on it in 45 minutes.
That includes pulling up, tearing down, pressure testing, picking parts from my old block, installing, pressure testing and putting everything back together.
How could this get any better? No funds exchanged hands this time.

The water pump is really easy to swap out... The o-ring instead of a gasket is a great design...

Honestly, I couldn't tell you if they made a difference or not. I swapped out the 16" winter setup for the 135s at the same time so the feel of the car changed dramatically. I was on the 16s for so long that I completely forgot what it was like to have tight steering!
Right now the car feels amazing, so I would attribute some of that to the Meyels.
I'll have a new thread up of the cars progress since last year in a few days when I get back from VA. She sure is lookin' purty!
DROID2>YourPhone
Honestly I would attribute most of that to the Meyle's. When I swap from my winter setup (17" rims) to my summer setup (19" VMR's), I thought the wheels were going to fall off the car driving on 95 north immediately after the swap. Turns out everything was torqued properly, car just felt every crack much much more and unevenness in the pavement dramatically more.

Picked up my valet key for my car at South Bay BMW. Got a couple of compliments on my car from salesmen while there. It's always nice to hear that from people who are used to dealing with much more expensive and newer cars. But, in the back of my mind, I'm always wondering if they are really just fishing to see if they could work me into a deal for something newer. You know, like they are looking for this type of conversation: "nice car". "Thanks, but it needs work". "Well then, I can get you into a .......".

Need more jacks.
I didn't see any jackstands :shifty
The jackstands weren't necessary. Chad's father had made custom beams that he put between the front jack roller and the bottom of the lifting arm that would prevent the arm from falling if it were to fail. I'd get under that car all day, any day; looked like a very solid piece of "engineering".

Kristen, I got my carbon fiber trim pieces from bimmian.com. The company that manufactured these trim pieces are AutoCarbon. These are full carbon fiber trim pieces that overlay onto the actual trim pieces. I liked the quality of these trim pieces. Hope this helps :thumbsup
Mine are more set up on a permanent basis rather than being taped on...

Charlie, are you gonna relocate the side mirror control?
Hermes,
I'm leaving the mirror control where it's at. Not making holes on the console so there will be a mark as you can see. If I am ever lucky enough to get the CSL door panels, then I will relocate my mirror controls here...

Sorry to keep spamming this thread with a pseudo-progress thing, but I think I did order the right part!
Got some polishing compound and polished the base real good. My buffing pad is practically black, and the base is shiny and glossy now :) When I head back to my parent's house, I'll compare the two and see if I am content. Currently waiting for the wax to dry, and I'll see how it turns out.
Edit: Wow, turned out amazing. I'll buff it a little bit more after I install it, but it looks basically brand-new! McGuires compound + wax ftw

This was last weekend, before stupid winter hit:
Washed it up along with the family 335d.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a107/mbcoops/a0287b7d.jpg
I realized that as much as I like AW, I hated washing it. Soap suds are coincidentally the same color, making it difficult to see if you've effectively rinsed the car. Water is transparent, which makes it difficult to see if you've effectively dried the car. I prefer to care for dark colors that aren't black. Red is a color I can deal with.
Also washed up the MINI and put a layer of wax on - much needed attention:

i actually have some of the corregated plastic like they use for small outdoor signs. I could cut that out with the lines running parrallel to the ground and then wire them onto the grill. lol....i have tensioners and a OFH to do today....i might play with this if all that goes well.

Well today I put my sweet new Stett intake boots on my whip. I have to say that the fit is very very tight. It fits but seems like it is a few mm too long. However, they look really good. Also did the expansion tank. Early in the summer I replaced the rest of the cooling system. I had a little trouble getting upper rad hose onto the expansion tank. Just wouldn't seat properly. After much wiggling, pleading, pushing and praying it seems like it went on correctly. Topped up the expansion tank and took her out for a spin. Everything seems copasetic. Going out to pick up some Sushi so I will put the beast through its paces to make sure everything is tight.

Derrick, the cool thing about the Stett boots or any silicon boot, you can trim it to fit. The mold is a little bit larger so there is room for error. Just square off the amount that needs to be removed and shave it to the prescribed fitment :) Good luck!

Nope, Not really set on selling at this point now. Low ball offers are low ball offers.
I wish I can pull the engine, but it's my DD to school/work everyday. If I did pull the engine then I wouldn't be really sure what to do besides a total tear down and rebuild. Wouldn't really be worth pulling it to just fix my oil leak from my VCG lol

Nope, It wasn't clear. But I narrowed it down to be one of the frontmost bolts on the left side. One of the techs helped me out and put the whole cover in the parts washer inside the dealer and helped me place it back on.. with some silicone to help it bond :)

Took off and re-installed my valve cover gasket after work today. I was in luck because I usually work until 12ish, eat, then go to class at 1. But my 1 o'clock was cancelled.. so I worked on my car until my 2:30 class. I think I fixed the leak..

Deets on Kris's issue?
Someone did a hit and run on his front bumper in the parking lot earlier today. Not damaged, but there is pretty nasty-looking scrape on the front and part of his carbon fiber hood (under the kidney) is scratched. Happened at his own home, to boot.

So I am going to try and not make too long of a post about this, but I got home and saw one of my neighbors outside (I live in an apartment complex in milford beach), so I asked them if they saw a white car parked next to mine today. The neighbor then tells me that there was a newer either white nissan or infiniti parked in front of me this morning. During that time I was in NY looking at wedding halls with the fiance. I look and there is noticeable damage to the front of the infiniti (spider web pattern on their front bumper, several scratches and a noticeable grey streak on their front bumper). It being dark, you can not see it really well in pictures but under a flashlight it is 100% evident. So, I called the cops. Long story short, regardless of the streak on their bumper, the damage to mine (with white paint on mine and grey on theirs), the police officer still said it was inconclusive. Basically my word and the neighbor vs them. :mad
Here are the pics
2495
Hard to tell because the pictures were taken at night, but under a flashlight there were visible blotches of TIAG on the front bumper.

Great afternoon today, finished with inspection II items and fluid changing time.....
1. Changed coolant- BMW blue
2. CHanged Diff fluid- redline synthetic, and found one plug was missing the crush washer, oops.
3. Changed Trans fluid- redline synthetic
4. Purged/bled brakes
5. Purged/Bled clutch- first time I've done this and it was a bit darker than i'd like to see.
6. Changed Power steering fluid (turkey baster method, old stuff was opaque and nasty looking)
now everything is healthy and happy!
BTW, as a comment, I wanted to change the flat rubber washers on my tranny plugs, and the dealer doesnt sell them seperately.....I'm supposed to buy new plugs to get the washers at $22 each......passed on that. Not critical, but anyone have a source?
