wow why do we have such different sets on our cars?? I have 22A and 20A on mine as those are what matched up closest to my stock wipers. 19" might have worked for the pass side one too, as the end of the 20 is right near the edge of the window. The spoiler on each wiper is facing the right direction too.

I'm pretty sure I got 19Bs, but I can't remember. I definitely know I got the B's, though. It just means they're more curved than the A's, I'm pretty sure it doesn't make any difference. It supposed to conform to more curved windshields better or something like that.

For those wondering about leather steering wheels becoming shiny- sometimes permanently. Don't let anyone touch it who put hand moisturizer on recently, and wipe it down once every week or two with Prestine Clean, LeatherMasters Soft Cleaner, Sonax Leather Foam or Ultima Interior Shampoo.

The oils and salts from your skin build up on the wheel and destroy the leather clear coat in a hurry if you don't.

:santa1 Nice. Yes when others drive my car, no hand lotion is the primary rule. No food is the second rule! Some hand lotion is okay, some is- very not okay and can stain interior surfaces- just like sunscreen.

I removed my Alcantara wrapped (by deadlysyns from M3forum) ZHP knob for my new F10 lit one last week and was surprised how much less the wrapped one weighed, I'd guess at least 1/2, maybe even 1/3 the weight of the new one. No idea if he removed a bunch of weight to be able to wrap it or what. I don't recall noticing the difference when I installed it but I was amazed at how much different shifting feels now with the heavier knob......it just feels less notchy with the added momentum of the heavier knob. Never would have guessed it would make that much difference. I LIKE IT!

Not my ZHP, but my family's other cars:

Cleaned the sap off the Subaru. I have the biggest blister on my thumb. I've never had a harder cleaning job than that. Little black dots were all over the place on it. ScratchX and an incredible amount of elbow grease got it off. But ouch, that hurt. Gave it a good wash and it's good and shiny now.

Tested my dad's battery on the G37X since it seemed to struggle to start. It's definitely about dead, doesn't seem to want to hold a charge no matter the amount of driving. I advised him of this.

I fixed the windshield wiper position on his car as well. The driver's home position was way, way off. A large portion of the windshield was not being wiped due to how low the home position was. I'm guessing this is because the windshield was replaced at some point in its life and the windshield guy put the wipers on in the wrong position - not uncommon of them to do. I thought this was a safety issue, so I re-positioned it to give much more visibility. I must say, the wiper arms are TONS easier to deal with than BMW's shoddy design.

When I get bored, I start fixing other peoples' cars.... :)

If it's a late E39 they probably got upgraded displays like the E46... I noticed pretty much no E46 seems to have dead pixels, especially compared to the E36's, I have 211k and mine look brand new.

I won't knock the Caliber for its spaciousness, but... let's face it, it's ugly. And it's slow. And it has no soul (though it does a little bit of character, which is important). I'm sure it's a fine car to live with, but it sure isn't a bank vault like the E39 is. This thing is beyond solid; it's pretty much driving a Swiss vault full of cash and armed security guards standing outside.

And BTW; all BMWs have manually adjustable climate control, regardless of whether it has an "Auto" button.

Unfortunately for the caliber, that's about where the pros end. Merging onto a highway is like the tetris world championship.

My brother's '97 540i had dead pixels all over the friggin' place. It's an issue that affects all E39's. Another friend of mine had an E39 525i, 2001; did the same thing. His current '01 M5 has dead pixels as well.

Seeing an E39 with all working pixels is kind of like seeing an E39 with cupholders that function (not that they're functional in any way); it just doesn't happen very often.

These are stupid little issues, just like every car has its quirks. Otherwise, the interior is solid as hell; doors require effort to pull shut because they're so thick and solid. The trim is solid. Best of all, it's got a durable-as-hell engine that still has some very good pull despite 318k.

If I could choose a rental car from a rental car agency, I would probably spring for the Kia Optima again; I was impressed by that car for some weird reason. It's got character, it drives pretty well, and definitely handles corners better than my mom's lighter also-FWD Nissan Sentra.
And 6-speed auto gearbox with manually selectable gears is important also...

But anyway, back on topic.
The ZHP should be getting a new fuel filter installed today and I think the shocks are going in, though probably not finished today. I can only imagine what the progress is, but it's going to be a hefty bill. I got the estimate emailed to me... ouch. That's with steeeeeeeep discounts on parts and labor, which is why there are no complaints from me! I really like the work he does.

yesterday i got an oil change and had my shop put in a new washer fluid pump. also had them order some new non-heated washer fluid nozzles. the last oil change was only 3,500 miles but it has been 6 months and with the kind of city driving i do (start/stop, on/off) i am super cautious about the oil.

they also took a look at the sunroof and sure enough the visor is broke off the track and there are plastic pieces all over the place. ordering a sunroof repair kit and hopefully that will do the trick and not have to replace the entire cassette.

we've been getting rain off and on the past week and it looks to continue over the next week and a half or so. as a result my car is going to be filthy as hell. i hate having a dirty car but when the weather is crap not much you can do...

Then I don't think gas is your problem... V Power is quite good. Do you have a dent in the tank? Maybe that could effect it. One of the E30s does and it makes the gas gauge act bi-polar!

Are you looking for ZHP engines or regular 3L's ? If you absolutely want a ZHP engine you find a decent 3L and swap the cams later on...

Have all these companies refunded you for all costs ? Back-and-forth shipping, 4 installations (if you don't DIY) etc.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/190751787594 Also I found this... Looks decent. Seller has good feedback. It's 500 mi away from my home otherwise I would've driven over to have a look for you. Even if it's in Canada shipping quotes should be similar to something shipping out of Buffalo, NY as that city is about 100 mi from Cambridge (where the engine is located).

Will need to wash/clay/wax the ZHP later after classes. Huge MFEST & overall, BMW/Euro meet at a local plaza.
Ordered an MFEST windshield decal, not 'cause I've been to MFEST because I haven't. But because it'd be nice to meet random people who notice it :)
Dane, thanks for the BMWMafia.com decals. But I won't be putting those on....no offense but it just sounds corny or cheesy. I'd rather have something that is more specific, like ZHPMafia.com or just ZHPMafia.

You'll definitely catch some flack for having an mfest sticker since your car isn't an M.

my car is making a funny noise.. I am guessing one of the spark plugs backed out a few threads? Am I on point here?

It is almost like a squealing noise at certain rpms, except it isn't. The performance and everything is fine. It just sounds weird and louder at idle for some reason..

My ngk's are only 4 months old btw. Any other ideas? It's not a pulley, or tensioner, I know this for sure. And I also read to check my air box, that is also bueno!

well, after talking to Dalton and my cousin.. It seems like something might have fired my alternator bearings, or AC clutch.

DIY time this weekend. should be fun..

Finally got my hands dirty for once and did something myself: replaced the air filter in the intake.
$55 for the OEM air filter.
Plus, washed the wheels, washed everything, wiped down the insides of the windows with Invisible Glass, and Rain-X'd all the glass except for the moonroof.
Then used some kind of Meguiar's blemish/scratch/paint correction on the hood and trunk. Then waxed.
Ready for the local MFEST meet tonight. :)

About one hour in of pulling out the alternator.. I literally just need to unbolt and disconnect it at this point. I'll wait until the new one is here.

I am going with a 120A Bosch reman from authausaz for $193..

Could you please? I've been using Magic Eraser on my leather wheel but it only makes it look new for about a day, and doesn't "feel" any better. I need a new product, and don't want to buy something, use it once, and have it sit because I don't like it. Okay, I am changing the idler pulley and tensioner pulley as well just in case. I know its the alternator, but since I'm down there. Why not..?

Do I have the hydro or mechanical? It was pretty hard to take off the main belt ( a lot of resistance), which makes me think hydro. Yet, the hydro tensioner would be obvious, which makes me think I have the mechanical?

I just want to change the pulley, can anyone confirm if I have the hydro or mechanical?

here are the pictures, sorry, this is the best I could do..

I see the piston. Thanks for the response, Dane.

Authaus ~ $333 for a reman. Bosch Alternator, new idler pulley (OEM), and a the hydro tensioner pulley (OEM).

I get $100 back if I send them my old alternator. So the parts are really ~$233

Coolant hose is fine. It's 14 months old, the picture distorted it for some reason..

The good thing is that fog lights aren't important. You'll eventually have time to fix it!

P.S. - The display on the instrument cluster will not notify you of fog lights that are out. Mine sometimes doesn't turn on, which I suspect is a ballast, but I have never gotten a notification for it. The only way I'll find out is if I see the lights off another car's reflection.

I recently replaced my amber reflectors with clear ones, sent from Gary.
Noticed that the passenger one was snapped in half later during the day, at first I thought maybe I had hit a rock on the freeway the other night (unlikely since I didn't feel or hear anything.)

Then the fog light on that side stops working. Or at least, I didn't notice until later yesterday.

Thinking it could've been vandalism or someone tried to steal the reflector....? or fog light? Doesn't make sense and I don't know if the two correlate but it seems too much of a coincidence that the passenger reflector broke and the fog light also all during the same day.

Eh, they also have the Honda reverse pattern :shifty

I still like them :)

Good call on checking the park plugs, these BMW M5x motors are known for having the spark plugs backing out, then they sound like a diesel..

Guys I need help and I need it quick. Less then a month ago my tensioner pulley failed and took the belt with it. Car did NOT overheat, I heard it and stopped immediately. So now I notice the car takes a long time to warm up (warm being right in the middle of the gauge) and last night pulling in my development I got a low coolant light. Park and it's steaming a bit but never got hot. So I check the coolant and it's a hair low but not to low. Now mind you this was 10pm last night and it's been raining, and I had to be at work early this morning so no good way to check for leaks. Got the low coolant light again this morning, did not get hot and did not steam. It's going to my Indy in the morning cause I just don't have the time to play with it. My first though is the thermostat is bad cause of the heating issues. Now I'm thinkin the expansion tank might be leaking? Any help? No the entire system has not been replaced, water pump has been, pulleys and belts have been, and 105,000 on the clock....

Likely coolant expansion tank hairline crack. Have it replaced as well as the upper and lower coolant hoses.

You can do this on your own. If you have a spare vehicle for a couple of days to work on your ZHP. Put the ZHP up on stands. Complete the coolant system replacement that was not done when you did the pump, belts & pulleys.

Damn.... :( When I blew buy a cop on the highway at 110mph in a 60 zone....he warned me not to be driving like a BMW prick...so I knew I had to buy suspension and wheels from that "warning". That's how I justified upgrading...not getting a ticket when getting pulled over. LOL

I washed the ZHP yesterday evening at 5:30 p.m. because I got home from work and discovered that some bird (although it could've been about 15 birds) absolutely destroyed my car with their waste dumps. I've never seen so much bird poop in one place in my life. I almost always wash my cars by hand, but this was an emergency. Didn't want to take a chance on having it stain my clear coat.

Picked up Wobz from the shop. She has a shitload of new parts!

Replaced springs with H&R Race springs (same as I had before, only these aren't... collapsed...)
OEM Control Arm Bushings
Strut mounts
Front upper and lower spring pads
Bump stops/dust sleeves
Rear shock mounts and new gaskets
Rear upper and lower spring pads
Front porkchop on the right side
Rear shock mount reinforcement plates
Bilstein Sport shocks
Strut Bearing Seat
Radiator hose

Is it me being totally satisfied or does my friend who has an ///M Z4 coupe not know how to drive? When I was following him I was able to keep up behind him as long as I kept the rev's up. This was turning repeatedly on roads where the speed limit was 50MPH so we rocketed out of every turn and intersection. I was surprised that he couldn't put much distance in between while hitting "goto jail time" up to 4th gear...LOL. Should I be even saying that here? :P

LOL I can't overtake an S54 but I can leave it wondering why I'm still behind!! It's like that sticky honey that you just can't wash off....always there bugging you! Hahaha

I could tell he was going all out because he's done the exhaust mod I told him about. Leave one exhaust ring off that connects the pipe to the muffler for louder sound...and it sure makes it louder!! But it doesn't sound leaky/ricey at all. So you get half muffler/half straight pipe!

Hoping that I don't have paint mismatch issues - matching TiAg is difficult. Will post before and after shots of the repair when she's back. Today I used it to piss off an angry prefacelift e90 325xi driver. Hilarious.

I guess she got mad I passed her and then later caught up when the road went back to single lane riding my ass. About a mile later she tried to pass me in the middle lane (used for turning into wherever) and was faced with another car in that lane turning.. ha! She ended up losing 2 spots to other cars in that act. Later on at a stop light, it turns to 2 lanes again, where one turns off to another road. She was stuck behind a tractor trailer and I stayed in the other lane right by his rear tires so she couldn't get in my lane to pass him. Last minute I accelerate to pass the truck, and she was stuck behind him putting down the road going 25mph in a 45. Sucks!

I've hit a curb, Ken Block style drifting my parent's AWD minivan. I came into a corner hard but then realized the minivan's engine didn't have enough power to keep the tires spinning so it gripped too early as I brushed the inside curb with the rear tire. LOL

Changed the following

oli change (BMW oil)
Alternator changed with a rebuilt Bosch unit
Idler pulley and tensioner pulley both changed with OEM units
Cleaned the MAF

I saved a few hundred by doing the alternator myself! I am glad I diy'd it. It was not too hard to do, the hardest part was re-installing the main belt because the hydraulic tensioner is so tight, and I was using a shitty little ratchet while trying to put the belt one with my other hand :rofl
I finally had my Dad crank the tensioner with the shitty ratchet while I quickly slipped the belt on.

I then took the car on a mildly spirited drive for ~20 miles and I averaged 26 mpg :) (lots of down hill with twisty roads)

How is the 50% tint? My dad wants his E39 tinted, I am thinking either 35% all over, but he wants to keep a classy look so the clear ceramic tint fits the bill.. But that is very expensive. So maybe 50% is the best tint to go with.

Yeah, the best stuff is ceramic. I have 5% on the rear and 35% on the front (3m tint). I am steering my dad towards a uniform tint, like 50% front and back. Tint on the front windows is illegal in Ca.. But I have never been stopped for it and I doubt I will. The PO parked the car outside (on the strret) in SF everyday and never got a window tint ticket either.

Looks nice! I have been thinking what tint I'm going to get.

Installed the uuc red isolated trans bushings with isolated cups. Drove it and the vibration is insane so removed the cups. Just the red bushings still produce a decent amount of vibration so I ordered the black urethane trans mount.

Let the experiments begin.

Didn't like em?! UUC is not the place for your mounts. Recommend AKG for all of your bushing necessities. And yes the vibration with the red mounts is obnoxious. That's why I installed both the engine and transmission mounts in 75D! I drive my car everyday and love the feel and response; especially the cabin shaking vibration when I decelerate through the gears from 75mph on the back roads.

No cups; they're meant for the e21 trans mounts. When you get the mounts you like make sure you torque them to factory spec - the aftermarket spec is way off. I go by: turn til squash, back off a quarter turn.

Mind sharing what is wrong with UUC and their bushings? Seem like a nice design.

The red isolated trans mounts are a bit too much for my liking as far as vibration goes. And I do not think urethane will soften over time and will be hard during the cold weather. So I decided to give these black urethane bushings a try from UUC since they are fairly cheap. And if they are too soft, I can add the cups which I have.

75d is pretty stiff as well since I have a steering column bushing from AKG in 75d waiting to be installed. Any vibrations through the steering wheel from that?

Nivo has installed that. I suggest sending him a PM regarding the steering guibo.

UUCs design was not very well thought out in the early stages of their initial product run and because of the catastrophic failures associated with that design I have since avoided them for all future purchases. The owner is just a shady character. The only thing I bought from them was a panel filter made by afe.

AKG is a manufacturer that solely makes bushings and mounts as well as a few odds and ends for BMW. Dedicated and great customer service has made me a repeat customer. They offer a wide variety of stiffness and can definitely give your car the feel that desire.

Just putting my opinion in here, I rode in Justin's car and personally I couldn't handle the vibrations the 75D's produce on a daily basis or even on a trip over a couple hours for that matter. Not bashing them as I'm sure they're great for those who are looking for a feel like that, just not for me.

That was mostly the engine mounts. Bimmerworld makes a nice mount that only vibrates when you're under 1000 rpm.

But the bolt through trans mounts will always add NVH. the OEM mounts are the best at the luxury smooth ride but the poly mounts in the same design with fail...catastrophically. again when I get older and tire of the vibrations I will probably swap them for softer mounts. But every time I drive it's a racecar :)

I'm a fan of AKG.....loving the constant vibration massage I get from the trans mounts. lol

Added these today....

Absolutely love the 50% on your car Marc, with that color. I went 35% due to CA laws, and with a black car, I wanted something a little darker but not dark enough to have deal with the police.

35 is obvious but since you can see inside the car, they tend to let it slide. Heck, they let much worse than that slide a lot of times in CA, as they generally have more pressing things to do... but I'd rather play it relatively safer. But yes, if they want to get me, they certainly can.

Had the amber bulbs in the turn signals swapped out for LEDs. Much better looking - entire front is now 100% white and/or blueish.
Passenger fog ballast replaced but it looks like the driver's side is 6000K while passenger is 4300K.............

Where did you get the LED turn signal bulbs?

Lets see...
I changed out my VANOS unit, put on a new VCG, installed an M3 timing chain tensioner, changed out my oil filter housing, put red loc-tite on my oil pump nut, put on a new oil pan gasket, installed a new water pump, thermostat, coolant pipes, PCV valve, spark plugs, clutch, front and rear shaft seals, exhaust manifold studs, exhaust manifold gaskets, new exhaust manifold nuts, and intake manifold gasket. In other words, prepared an engine for install. Tomorrow, it will be in the car.

But your 50 looks great.
