A good day for the ZHP. Gave her a bath and also debadged the trunk. Then I ordered some stickers from the local bimmer club to put on the cars.

Also, tires shipped, should be here tomorrow.

+1. What was off about them?

a few months back i replaced my stock black/white gauge face with M3-style grey/white gauges. to do so required removing the needles from the instrument panel. i guess when i re-attached them, i did not properly rotate them so that when the car is off, the needles were resting too far left of where they should be. so i had remove and disassemble the instrument cluster again, and rotate the needles so that the resistance point (natural resting spot) is where it should be, aligned at the far left dash mark. it's a quick and easy job. took less than 20 mins total.

today i felt the ZHP's lack of LSD...we got some rain last night so roads were wet this morning. was taking a turn at ~15mph and inner rear wheel caught a patch of mud at the apex right near the corner. upon getting on the gas to power out of the turn, the muddy tire immediately lost contact patch, car started to go sideways while wheel spun until DSC kicked in and straightened me out. i wasn't going very fast fortunately, or i could have caught a curb.

Installed some new smoked side markers from Khoalty. I really like how they look - had some clear markers on previously but they just didn't appeal to me. The quality of the Khoalty markers is complete shit though. Had to tape the bulb socket to the marker so it wouldn't come loose. I get what I pay for...

Anyone have any tips on how to "seal" the markers to the car without hurting it? It's a little loose and if I wiggle it, it comes away from the car and forms a small gap.

Then head over to Lamin-x and get their covers. IMO, tint is perfect and gunsmoke will be too dark

Installed my lighted ZHP knob from the new F10 M5. Looks great! Had a hard time holding the camera still enough in the dark to get a good pic though. I'll have to try again another day.

http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-333Ci/i-Cv5cRvj/0/L/IMG_1814-L.jpg

I removed the leather boot off the new knob and reused my Alcantara boot.

I tapped into the wiring for the lighting on the left side window switches. I just matched up the wire colors.....grey/red stripe (positive) and brown (ground) from the knob wires and the switch wires and luckily they were still matching colors from the E46 to the F10 wiring harness.

I would have preferred to use the cig lighter light wiring but it looked like the wires might have been cutting it close on length and I wanted to avoid having to add another splice to lengthen the wires an inch or two.

E46 got coded for 1-touch unlock and Comfort Access, but bad news for the 2002. Carl himself actually looked at the car today and noticed it has a 1600 head, but it gets worse... It's glued and clipped on to the knob. I just pulled the boot away from that soft nylon ring and then took a small side cutters to the ring. I cut the 2 clips off but left the single one opposite from the wires. It seems to work to help hold the boot up tighter to the knob.

Intake side was alright, but everything surrounding the housing was covered in oil since the fanblades flung it all over the place.
Really hope it's not the actual housing itself that's cracked.

LOL Ryan. You really CAN'T tell the difference. Up close, yes, but I'm really happy with the quality of the non-OEM one. I was kinda surprised at that. Gives me hope for those c/f euro-splitters that I'm going to order.

@JKO, so sorry about your car. Hopefully it's not a big fix, and definitely get rid of those Roundels, new ones are not that expensive.

In other news, after giving my car a bath, she repays me with some funky no-start thing.. When I turn the key to start position, nothing... If I hold it there, it eventually starts... No cranking, just silence and then all of a sudden, starter engages and she fires right up. Instead of waiting, if I turn key off, and go for second start again, she fires right up, no delay...

Anyone?

I'm betting either battery, starter or fuel pump are on their way out. I have changed both of the first two in the last year, just waiting for my fuel pump to die now (but will prob just change it soon anyways, it is 7 years old already)

Got the day off so I did a little searching and found this thread....

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=666083

might be of some help and there are a few links in post 15. Some possibly good ideas and some not, so take it for what it's worth.

I was thinking maybe EWS but it sounds like it will still crank with a bad EWS. Maybe bad ignition switch? Or clutch switch? Tried pushing in the clutch farther when it happens? Check battery voltage if you haven't already and clean or at least give all the battery cable connections a twist. I've seen perfectly clean cables not make a good connection before.

Starter going bad should dim the lights when you hit the key and a fuel pump shouldn't prevent it from turning over.

EDIT: did you wash in the engine compartment when you washed it?

Good luck man.

Barry, thanks for the link... I agree with what you said about the starter and fuel pump...

It sounds like the OP in that E46f thread had the same symptoms, but the majority of those replies aren't correct.

If fuel pump, it'd crank over with no fire... If battery, it'd be weak or you'd get the clicking of the starter solenoid... If starter, it might try or be weak...

I'm thinking this is a connection of some sort, or one of the magical mystery electronic devices in the car.

So here's more detail on my issue... I get in, push in clutch, turn key to start, absolutely nothing. No clicks, no dimming lights, NOTHING... All appears as normal. The other day when it first happened, I held the key to the start position, and after 2 seconds or so, it started. Starter cranked up quick and car jumped right to life, just like before...

Now this morning, I tried that again, holding key to start... Yet, even after 4-5 seconds, I had nothing... So, I turned key to off, and then tried again. On the second try, it cranked and started up right away, like nothing had happened...

Hmmm. Couple other things I've run across.....possibly a bad stater relay? Not even sure where that's at......fuse box or under the hood somewhere? I'll check it out. Or maybe clutch stop adjusted too far out but that doesn't sound right really if it always starts second try.

Sure sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch but it sucks to just start throwing parts at it. Would that require having to buy all new keys? Have you tried a different key?

Here's another thread I'm reading but it sounds like this is mainly about starter issues.

What? Crank hp is immeasurable when the engine is in the car. Why do people think that there is a magical formula for drivetrain loss...just take the real world numbers. Its much easier.

Probably not going to get then installed today. Dad took both keys to his car so mine has to wait for everything to cool down after I take my drug test.

Am I wrong or is it not common knowledge that there is an estimated calculation for every type of drivetrain out there to calculate crank to wheel HP losses?

For example my B5 Audi had shown ranges of 25-30% drivetrain loss due to its Quattro system. Where as my e46 showed a 17% drivetrain loss to rear wheels, while my brothers front wheel drive gti showed a 20% drivetrain loss to the front wheels.

Oh and these were all done at the same dyno so we can throw that possibility out the window.

Set up the Bluetooth system that came with the car. I had no idea that even for a 2006, that it would sync my contacts and I could control everything on the cars steering wheel. Hell, it even has voice command, but that portion of it probably sucks.

Great thing to have. Yesterday I was making a few calls driving and man does driving a manual on the phone suck.

Key word is estimated. Just use the real world numbers you get from the dyno. To measure your gains. It's much more accurate than relying on a theoretical calculation for a perfect car and converting the numbers both times.

How were those losses calculated? By assuming the cars had exactly their original output I'm assuming?

Just curious.

I've seen estimated figures for our cars from 15%-18%. Some of the E46 M guys seem to think it's 18%, because apparently much more of them get to 333 that way!

Those losses were calculated on stock dyno runs vs modded ASSUMING each car was a benchmark vehicle for comparison against manufacturer claimed hp numbers. That being said, for all we know the cars could have been wednesday cars or subpar production vehicles. Impossible to tell that is why people estimate.

Justin once again I find you butting heads with me. Why do you find in necessary to do this on a weekly basis? I am trying to give people an idea of what it put down in comparison to the stock factory claim on the engine. Since my car was not 100% stock when it was dyno'd for baseline, it's hard to tell if there is power loss/gain from anything else on there. Therefore the addition of the headers could have gained even more from a perspective. I realize this is a forum where people know a bit more than the average consumer but to simplify stuff for ANYONE, I made a comparison this way instead of saying - I made X whp and X wtq on a mustang dyno which you need to know is about 15% lower than this or that or whatever. It's an estimation, nobody is inflating shit... I'm sure you saw the dyno photo on e46f so whats the issue? Interpret it however you want just please for God's sake leave the assumptions, attitude and negativity out of it.

Cool story, Seth. Go cry about it. ZHP's put down a consistent 205whp in stock form. It's all there in black and white. You don't need to estimate anything, just use the gains from before and after and the wheel hp rating. That's all anyone cares about. Just say you make 20 whp over stock. That's acceptable with tuning and headers. 225whp.

Like I said earlier, very interested in your dyno with the new oil and the frank-intake. Just try to find a place that uses a better dyno and employs educated people.

Got the ZHP some new shoes! Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. It's gonna be about 200 miles to really break them in, but they grip is phenomenal. My old Conti DWS were great, but 3 years on a tire and these were starting to dry rot. Not to mention I had pretty much 0 tread left.

I also got an alignment. Before I bought the car, the PO told me about a pothole he hit and cracked a rear rim. He had it replaced with another OEM Style 135 and all was fine. What he didn't do was get an alignment done. So the toe was completely off in my rear passenger wheel. All fixed now. Posting results in the Alignment thread found HERE (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?321-BMW-330-ZHP-alignment-and-data-Pics&highlight=zhp+alignment)

I agree with you 100%. The zhp came with these dws so I didn't pay for them. I am just not impressed with any set of all season tires that I had.

Every single car I own has a set of summer tires and a set for the winter as well.

I cant wait till these get replaced with a nice set of summer tires. But with the high treadware on the dws, that will take forever to happen. And thats another reason I prefer to own a set of tires and wear them out till they are bald then have a set that ends up getting dry and cracks but still has rubber on it.

Vas

You are further south then me so technically you can get away with having summer tires all year round. I have done that before and didn't really have issue living in VA.

Owning winter wheels and summer wheels are also more expensive than just buying all seasons. If you track your car or really push it to the limit on a regular basis then you will definitely appreciate dedicated winter or summer wheels. But for everything else, all seasons are just fine.

I had conti's on my ZHP before I got the Michelins. Conti's were fine, not astounding but they had a long tread life. Got 3 years out of them before they were bald. Testing the Michelins now.

But...tread wear (UTGQ) is typically worse with a summer tire, no? I put 30k miles/yr on her....so I don't want to be taking out a second mortgage to finance tires :)

Yes, but too high of a UTGQ rating also makes you compromise handling/performance for treadlife. Just food for thought for anyone who tracked their cars.

Summer tires usually do have lower treadware rating on them. That is because they are a softer compound then an all season tire.

And no thanks to owning a tire for 3+ years. By then the tires are dry routed and are useless.

Newjack
11-29-2012, 03:02 PM
Yes, but too high of a UTGQ rating also makes you compromise handling/performance for treadlife. Just food for thought for anyone who tracked their cars.

Gotta pay to play.

the last time I can remember rocking A/S tires was probably some Conti h-rated ones back on the E32 maybe 14 years ago. I would rather run dedicated tires if I had to live in a climate that demanded a different winter grip, luckily I live in SoCal so I can run summers all year

Vas

Gotta pay to play.

To an extent yes.

Hankook ventus v12 are a perfect example of a affordable good summer tire. Plus has decent treadware on it.

Yeah...yeah....I get that....

I just wanna buy tires once per year. I don't think you guys are getting 30k outta your tires. But mine is pretty much all highway.....so I spose it might be different with you drifters.

Better dyno yes. Preferably put it on the dynodynamics aka heartbraker or a dynojet.

I am curious as well.

And after driving around on these conti dws, I stand on my opinion of not buying all season tires ever again.
My shop uses Dynapack. Reads higher cuz it's a hub dyno, but the positive increase between the baseline and the header dyno will be very accurate.

And that's an expensive opinion! Maybe you should get some cheap winters and splurge on some Michelin PSS for the 135s.

Stu
11-29-2012, 03:24 PM
My RE760s have just started to show wear on the rear tires, and I've put probably about 7-10k miles on them. The front tires still look brand spanking new, and the treadwear rating is a lot lower on these than the DWS.

I convinced my dad to get DWS's on his G37X. He's not a big car guy, but he can't believe how great the tires are. He said he's noticed a huge difference. To me, tires aren't something to cheap out on because they're expensive as it is and make a big difference on your car's safety. All I really care about is hydroplaning resistance, I don't plan to do any winter driving with my car.

Rob,

I didn't do anything but fight with that effing lower rad hose. This is all natural wear and tear from a 13 year old radiator...absolutely not what I expected to see.

Removal was as easy as two bolts and those goofy nuts that have spongy threads. Absolutely recommend the Behr replacement.

My car gets used, and I've experienced A/S tire grip. Me no like.

You must not ever drive your car. 3 years is like 2 1/2-3 sets for me. I just put my 3rd set of rear tires on later on in the summer and I've only had it for about 2 years when I did that. AND I also switch out to winter tires. To boot, I've only put 25,000 miles on my car since I've gotten it in July 2010

Maybe you got some water on the starter relay? There will be some sort of rubber boot on the wire but it could be cracked. While you're down there check for voltage while someone turns the key.

William.

It looks like we may not have a starter relay.:dunno All I see showing up in the fusebox is a "starter Lockout" 5 amp, fuse #14.

http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-ZHP-misc/i-FKzTVV2/0/XL/E46FuseDiagram-1-XL.jpg

Nothing mentioned in the Bentley about a relay but I did learn that I was wrong about the EWS. It uses the clutch switch to lockout the starter if it has a problem. No EWS handshake, no starter crank.

Nothing they're calling a "starter relay" here either.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BD53&mospid=47713&btnr=61_1100&hg=61&fg=25

I'm thinking I read somewhere once where our DME handles the relay function. Might be something else I'm thinking of though so not too sure on that.

Any luck Jon?

I wouldn't really put that kind of word on it. I'm most definitely a responsible driver and never mess around with other people around or with people in my car, but I do most definitely drive my car to enjoy what it is. Most of the time I'm just putting to and from work/school. Rarely do I ever run it through the gears because I always feel like my car hasn't fully warmed up in my 20-25min 12-15mile commute (depending on routes)

But I don't drive it aggressively for my car to justify ripping through tires the way it does. Or maybe I do..? I certainly know much more agressive drivers than I do.. AND ones that drive that way on a daily basis. They don't have tires like I do though...

(FWIW, I ripped through tires on my 528i as well. non-sports package, 15 or 16 inch rims with crappy all seasons haha)

Glad it worked out but I can't help but think it's not a coincidence that it happened after washing your car and then miraculously fixed itself. The relay is attached to the top of the starter. It's a combination relay and solenoid that engages the pinion gear. The smaller, low current wire is the one coming from the ignition switch and where you would check for voltage with the key turned.

William.

While I was there he needed help parking the cars for the night, so I helped pull them all in the lot. I do have to say that despite rocketship status, there is no way I could regularly drive a Z3MC (2001 so it has S54) due to the ridiculously tiny interior cabin.

Checked out my reservoir tank and the connections, couldn't spot a definite leak but I may have one based on what appears to have been one toward the back (past "seepage" spotted). Not really sure how they'd leak w/o usage as they just slide in there. So, I re-adjusted everything and we'll see. Hopefully it was something loose vs. broken. I guess I need to move this into maintenance if I have to post anymore on this. Fingers crossed.

The car was previously owned by my aunt who fed it 87 gas all the time and didn't do any maintenance at all.
A bunch of brand new parts totaling around $2,000 were thrown into it to make it healthier after it was acquired but it wasn't driven regularly for a long while until just now....so it might've been the non-operation that degraded it.
Battery was just dead, that was the only problem. As long as it's running now though, the headlights work and it doesn't die while in motion, I'll leave it at that.
I must say though, this steering wheel feels super lightweight and the throttle response is way better than the ZHP even though it was born 7 years before it.

I am sort of lost here. Didn't engine three come from Southwest and was a reputable source? What happened? Where are you buying number four from?

static667
11-30-2012, 07:55 PM
Yeah...cancelled with Southwest as I found a lot of bad review on them. The one I got came from another salvage yard, this time in St. Louis. The engine I received look as though it had been sitting in a mud puddle for a while. When I pulled the intake manifold, water ran out of it. Then when I looked into the intake side of the head, I noticed that all of the valves were really heavily rusted. That would be a fail in my book.

And after driving around on these conti dws, I stand on my opinion of not buying all season tires ever again.

I had always heard good things about the DWS?

I drove them on an E30 once. They are very good for all seasons in the snow...

But otherwise I thought they were terrible. Very squeamish at the limit and braking performance decreased dramatically. But it all depends on your previous experience, driving style, and expectations! I'm sure some people love them and that's fine.

But...tread wear (UTGQ) is typically worse with a summer tire, no? I put 30k miles/yr on her....so I don't want to be taking out a second mortgage to finance tires :)

The PSS is up to a 300 rating with astonishing grip. UTGQ is generally associated with ultimate grip, but Michelin and Bridgestone have once again discovered how to further warp the laws of physics! I suppose we're all better for it.

William.

Once- when I washed my previous ZHP, I started it and it idled incredibly rough. It was warm, but kept trying to stall, the radio and HVAC kept flickering on and off as did the cluster lights and my headlights. I got freaked out and parked it for 24 hours. It never happened again- over a year and a half more driving... lifes mysteries...

i'm having the same issue. i'm pretty sure it's the pump. the tank loses 80% of the liquid quickly but once it gets down below the sensor level it stays static...

I had that issue. There's kind of a trial to go through with it.

First, do you have the cold weather package? If so that makes it potentially much more complicated, an extra pump and the headlight washer seal gaskets. Order of item replacement:

1) Little pump gaskets. There is one on non-ZCW cars and two on ZCW cars. They cost about $2 each IIRC, and seem to fix the problem about half the time.

2) The pump or pumps. They can fail internally and only occasionally dump fluid out of the pump bleed hole.

3) A seal is either misaligned or broken on the headlight washer... I never got that far.

My car would do the same, hold fluid for a day or sometimes two, then dump it all out at once. It turned out to be a problem with the headlight washers. I plugged the headlight washer line- it was the first time I ever stopped short of following a problem to the end on that car.

On our old E39 528i it was the pump's little gasket.

Unplugged whatever sensor is in the hose that goes to the SAP... And the car started up super smooth. I've been having issues with jumping idle on warm startups for 3 months. So the SAP system has an issue somewhere... Hopefully it's the valve or a hose and not the pump. Glad to finally have an idea where the problem is.

The valve could really be a candidate for preventive replacement I think, maybe every 60k-80k. Once it goes bad it kills the pump extremely quickly. I've had experience with that on my previous ZHP and E36 M3. I have a theory- that if the valve is replaced before it breaks- the pumps are actually pretty bulletproof.

I washed my car today at the self-serve place and noticed all my wax + sealant was gone.. again. I give up.
^There. Back on track.

Maybe we should Opti-Coat both our cars in my garage when I get home! :shift

Sorry for the long post, I had some catching up to do!

Unclip the pump connections and it's just one 10 mm nut holding it on. Inspect for cracks at the sensor location and leaking seals where the pumps mount.

Do you have headlight washers?

Those are prone to cracks and letting fluid go everywhere. Unless it's dripping from there and hitting the splash pan and running the whole way back I doubt it's them...ya never know tho.

Not necessarily... that is until it kills the pump. Maybe an upstream flow code? Certainly no guarantees.

I think there are actually youtube videos on how to test the valves, but I'm not sure. I just replaced mine on my newer ZHP and haven't had any problems... yet.

Over the past 2 days:
-Replaced fan belts (AC & alternator)
-Replaced tensioner bearing and idler bearing
-Replaced fan clutch
-Replaced VANOS line (it's metal now whaaaaat)
-Cleaned off most of the engine oil that leaked all over the chassis and engine
-Replaced transmission cooler lines (both)
-Replaced the lost engine oil (Liqui-Moly)
-Inspected tire pressure
-Replaced the lost transmission fluid
-Topped off fluids
-Replaced the filter in the BMW performance intake

And I don't know what part this is called, but the metal sun-disk looking thing that's directly behind the fan, in the center. That was replaced too (something about it being loose when heated up)

Altogether, this big fix set me back $835. No bueno for a working college student who pays for his own housing/tuition/bills.
But good news..........it should be fine for a long time. And it runs noticeably better and louder now, smoother, faster.
Flooring it today on the freeway back from work was too damn fun. All the way to the redline, it was screaming and it was so smooth.
Some lost HP was definitely regained from the belts.

One thing that was off though, they said when they checked the transmission, the fluid was very clean and they couldn't tell what fluid it was because the sticker that specifies it was missing. The transmission was rebuilt or something....but it had no identification on it or anything.

In the end though, it didn't matter since it was running strong so even if it was rebuilt or replaced by a dealership, it's good.

Lookin' good! How do you like the LED RCR's so far ?

My satisfaction level is 8/10.
1/10 is for the simple fact that my third brake light lights up a fraction of a second faster than my LED tails do, and that bothers the shit out of me.

Anyone know how to fix this? :shifty

Otherwise, I love the way they look. Here's where the other missing 1/10 of my score is:
I would have thought of a slightly better design for the trunk lights; the LEDs are in a stepped "straight-row" type of setup, which I'm not too fond of. The lighting on the actual brake/running light portion of the tails look just fine though. I also wish that the turn signals were LED as well. I have no idea why they decided to not make it LED...

It might have to do with the resistor setup. I used to wonder about the delay when I had LEDs on my sedan.

I used it on the hard buttons. They don't have a "soft-touch" type of material to them that I can tell; they feel like hard plastic to me. I tried not to use it on anything other than the buttons, but of course the surrounding areas would get touched too as I was cleaning it. I'm not going to worry about it at the moment; this was a trial run, first time using iso-alcohol/Simple Green to clean anything on the inside. It did a pretty good job with the steering wheel. I just need to figure out how to prevent the steering wheel collecting all the oils in such a short amount of time. I notice that brand new wheels take a year or so before they start to show oil on them. A freshly cleaned steering wheel starts to show it almost as soon as you start using it. WTH?

hey guys.

The sunroof on the E39(2003 530/5speed) works, but it does not tilt up. It rolls back just fine. A shop told me i need new sunroof rails, and my sunroof cassette and motor are just fine.

http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E39-530i-M54_3.0L/Search/Sunroof_Rail/ES157405/

So Is this what I need to buy? I'm starting to think maybe I should just let the shop buy the parts and have them install it. Although, I want to save a few dollars and buy the parts myself. The shop will probably charge me local dealer price (expensive), I would just buy it from e-bmwparts.com (a lot cheaper than the dealer, and a hair cheaper than ebmw and ecstuning)

They were Eagle Eyes and sorry, sold the car. Now I have my coupe!

As far as the steering wheel, yes the oil builds up and it seems hard to remove the greasy look once the wheel turns that sheen. Now do you mean on the buttons, leather, or both? On the buttons, a lot of it is actually the textured plastic wearing down quite quickly. Something like Opti-Coat may prevent that wear but that's speculation- I haven't got around to trying it yet.

Is your wheel Leather or Alcantara?

Will get pics in the morning after class of the disk-looking thing and VANOS.
The reason why they said with 100% certainty that mine was swapped or rebuilt is because they had no idea what the transmission fluid was and couldn't match it. Not only that, it was way too clean (or did they say clear?) to have been original.

I really doubted it too since it seemed like if it was, it'd something that the previous owner would've told me since she worked at Escondido BMW.

On the other hand the last time I let Jiffy Lube change the oil on my BMW, they over-torqued and broke the drain plug, but I didn't know (no leaks) until a year later when I removed the plug and only half came out. I think it's the hollow drainplugs, as Jiffy Lube has changed the oil on my Saturn (solid drain plug) several times with no problems. I broke the hollow transmission drainplug myself the first time I drained it. Luckily the local auto parts store had a generic M18 replacement plug that fit.

You can also buy the BMW EVO blades for a steal... same design and properly cut for the E46...

Yeah they're just as good. I personally like the Icons better because they're slightly smaller in profile (which is basically not noticeable at all), but either way they're more or less the same price. Auto stores are easier to come by than the dealer for me :)

I think I got 22B and 19B for my Icons. Fitments is very good, doesn't sit perfectly flush on the passenger side, but I also noticed that with every E46 I've ever seen.

:rofl That's hilarious... Wrong, but hilarious...

Pics of wheels coming soon. I'll post some better pics of the damages to the car as well... Needless to say, wheels will stay in the boxes for a few weeks I'm sure. That's ok, no chance to curb. :biggrin

wow why do we have such different sets on our cars?? I have 22A and 20A on mine as those are what matched up closest to my stock wipers. 19" might have worked for the pass side one too, as the end of the 20 is right near the edge of the window. The spoiler on each wiper is facing the right direction too.
