Well not today, since I've been on extended travels for work, but last weekend while home I finally installed the used BMW strut bar I bought some someone on M3forum. Looks cool but didn't have much chance to drive it after installation. The studs on the Ground Control E46 street camber plates are just barely long enough to use with both the OEM reinforcement plates and the BMW strut bar end plates.

When I first got the car, about 3 months ago, I used some krylon for plastics black spray paint to paint the front bumper trim back to black. More of a test to see how it held up then anything else. It held up so today I removed ALL the trip I could get off, front bumper (with my new plate delete strip) rear bumper trip, trunk handle, hood vent thing, and prepped and painted everything. Got it all back on and ill be damned if it does not make this car look a TON better, the faded plastics really made it look its age! Loving my plate delete strip to! Now I need to do the door trip and all the faded black plastic around the windows

Well, I'm sad to admit that I've been leaving both the ZHP and the X3 outside for the past few days. Both of them are dirty and just being left alone... Why you ask?

Well, I'm completely renovating my garage. Full disassembly of the workbench, remove all goods and storage, paint the entire thing, put up 6 new fluorescent light fixtures, epoxy coat the floor (the fancy kind with the colored sprinkles), relocate the ceiling fan, run electrical and cable for the wall mounted flat screen, and then install new pulls on all of the built in cabinets...

It'll take me a week or two, but I'm excited for the result. Giving my baby a new home! :biggrin

Sweet man, good luck! Owning a home is a LOT of work, but its a lot of fun too. I've found that its sort of like modding a car. Of course, there is no adrenaline rush like when test driving the new parts, but the thought of knowing the money is being 'invested' as opposed to blown on a depreciating asset (car) sort of offsets it.

New front pads and rotors installed tonight after work tonight!
Based on recommendations here, installed Axxis/PRB Ultimate street ceramics, they seemed to bed nicely and perform great so far.

I am more than happy with mine after installing them about a year ago along with the BMW Performance rotors. No noise, no dust and TBH I can't notice much of a difference in stopping power. Maybe just because I am so used to them I don't remember what the oem pads felt like. :-)

It sure is nice though not having to wash the car so often just because the wheels are so dusty. IMO washing a lot is just asking for rust to form. I reverse the hose on my shop vac after a wash to blow out the water underneath the trim etc......surprising how much water is hiding everywhere.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but to my understanding if you use the camber plates, then strut bar is not required for strut tower protection. But if strut bar is to be used, then camber plates not required. Strut bar protects the tower and the swaying....which is a better way.

It's sounds like you're confusing (adjustable) camber plates with the strut tower reinforcement plates Lawrence.

As far as whether you don't need the reinforcement plates if you have the strut brace I'd suggest using both. Bolting something to the top of the strut tower isn't going to give as much strength as installing a plate underneath. Much more surface contact from underneath. Especially in the case of the BMW Performance strut brace, it only contacts the top of the strut tower in 3 thumbprint sized places, it doesn't sit flat on top of the strut tower.

Went over Terras this morning and he cleared my check engine light since I fixed my secondary air pump vacuum leak, he also enabled my windows to roll up remotely and I had him set the sun roof to not move when using the remote roll up/down :D

Assuming you can't come up with the right stud today I would try pulling the Vanos back off, remove the stud and see if you can find a bolt that's long enough to screw in from the outside. Looks to be an M6X30 stud. No info listed on thread pitch though, just take the old one with you. Part # for the stud is 07129908102.

Assuming the threads are the same on both ends of the stud, (not always the case) you could even make a new stud by cutting the head off a suitable sized bolt. Just screw a nut on before cutting the threads so you can screw the nut back off to clean up your cut threads.

It's getting late in the day now but you could try a farm implement dealer or better yet a Caterpillar dealer. Cat has a great selection of quality hardware and they may have longer hours than a hardware store etc. Sometimes the service dept is open longer than parts and maybe the service manager would help you out.

An LSZ unit with SW 4.0 has officially made its permanent home in the space beneath my driver's side air vent.
It has been recoded, now has the correct mileage and VIN (no tamper dot), and has some extra goodies coded in, triple blink being one of them.

Installed the BMW Performance SS (Thank you wsmeyer) & UUC DSSR. Program the Bi-Xenons for High and Low Beams. Waiting for 0 dark thirty to go align the Xenons......



Edit: Alignment done....piece of cake. Using the 6mm T-handle allen works better adjusting than a Philips.

The ZHP won't see snow driving if I get them. Many friend's here with 4x4's and trucks here.

Took the DISA out of the conv and cleaned it, cleaned up whatever I could reach inside the intake, cleaned the MAF, and cleaned air filter on the performance CAI too. Broke that stupid little F connector on the upper intake boot necessitating a trip to the dealer. All done now, eliminated the 3K studder. Pulled the spark plugs and all looked good, only 36K miles on the car so wasn't expecting any bad news but wanted to check just the same.

Got an awesome CF license plate holder in the mail today from Williamsburg, looked better on the TIAG than the IR or Topaz, so that's where it went. Gary coerced me into letting my son debadge the TIAG, so that was done too.

Let Gary drive the 540i, he might now be an E39 convert, time will tell.

Regarding my ZHP, I cleared the ULF module of paired phones and paired my new iPhone4 to it using PA Soft and my BMW Scanner 1.4.0 :) Couldn't believe how easy it was to do :biggrin

The pairing button wouldn't put my ULF module into pairing mode so I was about to order a new 13th gen ULF... thankfully, I won't have to do that :thumbsup

Amazing what you can do with this scanner and software :)

The coupe got an interior cleaning today, exterior was already clean.

The sedan got an inside and out cleaning, I'm not liking the dust from the new StopTech pads and may swap to ceramic pads.

The conv got new foglight bulbs and then a full interior and exterior cleaning, took a couple hours and she looks beautiful.

I'm spent, drank about a gallon of water today, sweated it all back out and more, wife sent me to the showers, high 90's and high humidity. Sweated out all the adult beverages GSEN280 and I consumed yesterday, and we had fun!!!

cleared the SES and drove about 2-3 miles - no indication of it coming back on. Car is still fairly sluggish though. I know the humidity has something to do with it but since I replaced the entire vanos is it going to readapt or something? I feel like the cars power is only like 60% of what it used to be down in the low rpms.

When you did the instal, did you do anything with the timing? if the timing is off it would definitely throw a code. Also, we recently have been having a problem with the solenoid actuators getting jammed. Removing the solenoids and pushing down on the actuator to see if it is freed up would be a good idea please let me know what you fine,

wow that mofo was wedged in there but i managed to pull it out after fussing with it for the last 50 min.

they said to use carb cleaner and some kind of brush or cloth to get all the grit out which is likely making it stick.



so hopefully that works.


on a side note, what should I be doing with Dr.Vanos? Is it out of the question to ask for a small refund for my hassle or is this just kind of "how it goes" with DIY stuff? I mean they guy even said to me on the phone "sometimes our cleaning of the parts doesn't get EVERYTHING out and we've had several problems lately with these solenoids getting jammed up".

Took her to the Performance center for some Autoxing. Then parked her on the side lines to take a few hot laps with Performance School Driver, Mike Renner, in the 1M and F10 M5. That was a blast. The 1M reminded me a lot of Kristen's 135i, and the M5 is just RAW. With all the hoodoo computer magic that is supposed to help you control the car, it gets out of control (or so it felt, Mike was in control the whole time) really quick. I have never ridden in something so fast. Also rode and drove my friends stock 135i. Also amazing. (He also took the fastest BMW time, with lots of M3s and e60 M5s in attendance. That should say enough about the 135. I'm thoroughly impressed.) Then I was asked to drive either the F10 M5 or 1M from the track and park it where they put all the cars. I chose the M5. Following Mike Renner in the 1M, he led me around the autox course, I drove like a granny, but in a straight he pulled away and signaled for me to catch up. I goosed it, and OMG. I was smiling all night.

My fastest time after 3 laps (most people got about 10 or more, I stopped to ride and watch) was 24.6 sec.
My friend in the stock 135i, with the fastest BMW time, 22.837 sec.
The fastest car, a not stock Mini, 22.808 sec.
Mike Renner in the F10 M5 21.3 sec.
Mike Renner in the 1M 20.8 sec. ( But he drives these every day!)

Dane, I need your help! I did my VCG a few weeks ago, no issues, no leaks. Used a small amount of black rtv on the corners of the half moons like everyone says to.
Noticed oil on the ground today and found a small leak on the left side of the vanos, left being if you have the hook open and are looking down on it. I gave the three bolts on that corner a tiny bit of a turn just to snug them down and will monitor it now. If it continues to leak what are my options?

First off.....ensure it's coming from the VCG. 2nd.....I wouldn't exceed the torque spec on the valve cover...by much for 2 reasons. 1) you could crack your valve cover 2) typically leaks that involve seals, do not get fixed by tightening the fastener. Usually, the seal is pinched, where no tightening will fix.

Just monitor like you are. If the leak returns, I would pop the valve cover, and just replace the VCG. It's fairly quick and fairly inexpensive.

All that said.....if it's coming from your vanos gasket....more is going to be involved.

If you haven't replaced the PCV crankcase valve, it could be clogged/failed and causing pressure build up and blow out your recent VCG replacement in the passenger side rear of the engine. This is what happened to me. I had to replace the PCV, (did all the hoses while I was in there), and then redo the VCG with a new one.

I already had mine done. I sacked up and just paid the dealer to do mine because I didn't feel like doing it. $250 well spent though.. got a DISA check, TB & ICV cleaning as well.

+1 on stealth bulbs. Imola looks soooo goood with clears. I love them matched with the stock grilles as well. But I'm liking the black grille too.

I had yellow fogs on my car for a while.. and they didn't 'fit' my car well. I think the only cars that can pull em off are AW, black, and maybe blue?

It's right under the VANOS and to the left. It is the same part number as the intake solenoid. Get at it with a wrench, inspect and clean.

Just put on new control arm bushings, removed the clutch delay valve, and flushed the brakes. Car feels great :)

Finally took the plunge the other day and ordered a new windshield to replace my pitted one. $247 from Lincoln BMW. Got an e mail today confirming it qualifies for their free shipping for the month of July. :-) I was afraid they might consider it "oversize" and charge me something for shipping.

Gonna be nice looking through a nice clear windshield. Been debating doing this for a couple of years.

Well, my car has had quite an adventure over the last week.

The car was running crappy at higher RPMs under load. Based on all the info that's out there, it was reasonable to assume the DISA and/or VANOS were to blame. I was intrigued with the "DISA Gold" upgrade option, and a rebuilt Dr Vanos unit only runs $250, so I figured I'd do them both as preventative maintenance at the very least, and would hopefully solve my stumbly issue in the process. I dropped the car off with my mechanic a week ago today, along with a set of OEM Sachs shocks & struts, for a full suspension refresh, including bushings at both ends and shock mounts, OEM parts to be supplied by the shop. I got a call last Wednesday afternoon - the "new" VANOS unit was throwing codes on both intake and exhaust sides, and the car wouldn't rev for shiite. It took a day to get the good doctor to talk to my mechanic, and after that conversation, he concluded that the unit was indeed bad, and agreed to send a replacement. That was Thursday. The replacement didn't arrive until TODAY (thanks a lot, Doc). My mechanic (Babbitt Motor Werks in Mesa, GREAT guys) cut me a sweet deal on the labor, despite having to do the VANOS twice. All is well now, and the car probably runs better than the day it rolled off the line.

Since purchasing in May with 53k miles, I've now done the following:

Inspection II
new A- and C-pillars
set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports (can't say enough about these tires - best I've ever driven on, by far)
new ZHP shift knob
full 3-step detail by the local "master", including interior & engine compartment
added a set of Cocomats
full suspension refresh & (of course) alignment
VANOS swap for rebuilt unit
DISA Gold
replacement Ebay stock head unit to replace original with knackered volume knob

Next up:
USASpec iPod adapter
cooling system refresh at some point

The car looks and drives FANTASTIC now. I feel so fortunate to have found the "right" car very quickly, that met all of my desired criteria when I began searching a few months ago. I found this one in Miami, and the distance would normally have kept me from pursuing it, but my best pal lives nearby, is a former stealership mechanic, and did a VERY detailed pre-purchase inspection and photoshoot for me, as well as hung onto it as I arranged transportation to Arizona. It's the perfect companion to my M Coupe, and it's awesome to switch off between the two, since they both have their own outstanding (but very different) virtues.

I popped some air bubbles on vinyl roof wrap that I had done on my e46 wagon on monday lol.

The installer said let the air bubbles work their way out for 1-2 weeks, if nothing happens then pop them with a needle. I was too impatient and got rid of them. It looks great now, I'll have to post pictures soon :)

They talk such an impressive game, then apparently have delivered to both of us, bad workmanship on their part. What really frosts my gonads is the total lack of urgency in communicating with my shop, then in getting the replacement to them. Thankfully I have another car, but I could easily have been in a rental for a week. I'm sure glad that's behind me (almost), and hope that it's an area that will never need attention again. Though how can we now not have our doubts?

I saw a sign saying if you get caught going 50km/hr over the posted speed limit (100km/hr) you face a fine of up to 10000 and immediate impounding of your vehicle or jail time. Crazy for only 25mph over.

Leaking pretty badly. I was losing a quart about every 1000-2000 miles. I put that mileage on maybe every couple of weeks or month, so that adds up quick.

Hey BP, the good way to look at it is that if you were adding a quart every week or so, your oil was never really getting dirty. More of a flow through system... :biggrin


As for me, I'm currently in the process of working on headlights again. At the moment, I have the most bastard set of headlights possible... Driver side is an OEM ZKW light unit with E90 ZKW projector bowl retrofitted in place. Passenger side is an OEM AL light unit with E46 ZKW lens unit in place.

And driver side auto leveling still doesn't work. :shifty

so then i had to decide between running squared 18x8.5 ET35 of the AG M359's OR go with the AG M310s in 18x8 / 18x9 setup. decided i like the M310s enough to do the latter, so i changed the order to these:

Does anyone know if any of the company's that we use for parts sell the ccv parts (hoses and such) as a kit? Im gonna be doing that repair and everything im reading says people's hoses basically fall apart while removing them so I'd like to have all new parts ready to go

Does anyone know what this is? Found it after finding a hole in the bottom splash guard of the front passenger side bumper while getting my new fogs all buttoned up.

A quick search only yielded a 'windshield washer temperature sensor' but I can't seem to fathom why it's just a sensor that goes in the bottom of the bumper?

Sigh, my outside air temperature failed. Car thinks it's -40° outside, so it won't turn the AC on. The sensor is still there, so it must have just failed for some reason. Hopefully the wiring isnt somehow messed up.

Anyone in maryland or NoVA have one that I can buy? I really would rather not buy from Tischer if I don't have to...

It ensures fluid in the nozzle don't freeze. Look in vehicle electrical systems down in the wiper sections. You'll see it.

Well the day is finally done. Got a lot done today, so I'm happy. I got my Frankenstein headlight all finished up, took her out tonight and aimed them... So nice to have Good light output! Also got under the car to locate a mysterious rattle, fearing it might be the DISA... It was a bracket going from the underside of the tranny and clamping around the two exhaust pipes. It was all rusted out, so I pulled it and ordered a new one.

Also got her cleaned up and then a quickie detail in preparation for my first BMW get together tomorrow.

It's been a long day, but a good one. :)

Had to do some surgery. Cut and splice an extra 12 inches of copper wire for each of the three wires in the two black sheaths. Wrap in electrical tape to clean it up there you go...M3 Ballast relocation for non-M e46s.

Ballast was interfering with the Long Tube Intake.

From my dealer, total cost was $23.XX. Plus the 90' pack of 22 gauge copper wire was $7.41. Easy mod/improvement.

Changed out my left rear window regulator. Easy job to do but I accidentally got a small chip in my tint so I'm waiting to figure out my schedule to go get that window re tinted. Sucks but at least my window works and I can drive my car again!

Sorry to hear Charlie.....my worst nightmare! Try beating on the bottom of the fuel tank or if that fails pull the bottom rear seat cushion up and hit it from the top. If it's like a 330 the fuel pump is the one on the right side under the seat.

Fuel pump relay is on the upper left behind the fuse panel. I believe you have to remove the glove box though to get at it. It can be swapped for another light green one, there should be one for the horn or fog lights that is the same color. I've read that they are a bitch to get at though.

I just ordered a fuel pump and relay yesterday, not sure if I'm going to install them right away or just keep them in the trunk just in case. BMW Auto Parts looks to be the cheapest place for a VDO Siemens pump. $109 and free shipping. Unfortunately it doesn't do you much good though Charlie. Good luck with everything.

Going to use a 3M headlight polishing kit and then install Lamin-X lens covers on my headlights. Pretty nervous about the initial 500 grit abrasive pad.....I'd sure hate to screw up my $1000 a piece, non-replaceable lens headlights. No guts, no glory I guess. LOL

Nice to live in an area where you can find parts easily. I'm sure no one around here would have had a pump in stock. That thing with the 2 wingnuts on it must be a tool to remove the lock ring? I ordered a new lock ring with mine so I might have to make myself a tool like that and carry it with me for when I do mine.

Must be nice! It looks like BMA doesn't carry the M3 pump anyway. Husker BMW gets $283 for it so a couple hundred for install for you so you can't complain about $562......especially considering it's a Saturday.

Ended up buying a temperature sensor from Tischer - for anyone who shops there - it was cheaper for me to just use my CCA discount at the counter than to order online. No BS handling fees. Installed it and now my dash reads the proper temperature/AC works again.

That temperature sensor should not cost $40 though. I would have jus bought a generic if anyone stocked e46 parts.

Welp, got home tonight and played with the headlights a bit more. So now I have two AL lights with E46 ZKW lens in them. At some point I'll start upgrading my bulbs to stuff I really like, but the Philips are ok for now. Have to replace other bulbs at some point too.

How have you not paid shipping? They have flat rate shipping based on cost of the items, and the prices are extremely high. High enough that it's no better than just buying locally in most cases. (Tischer = getbmwparts)

Thebmwpartstore.com is the best online dealer bar none. Best prices I've seen (They even beat Nike001's *employee* discount for a couple items), and all orders over $100 are shipped free. And their customer service is much better than Tischer's. I get responses to my emails the very same day - often within just a few minutes. Good luck getting a response from Tischer without resorting to forums. And unlike Tischer, the guys at thebmwpartstore will actually talk to you on the phone if you prefer that

Yesterday while driving down to Rob and Kristen's house I had an unfortunate event transpire while taking my ///M on a roadtrip. As I was pulling in to the first rest stop in New Jersey off the Garden State Parkway I lost power and my ///M kept stalling. I immediately looked for a spot to pull into and parked my ///M to find out what the issue was.

BP was kind enough to use his computer to scan my car and found a fuel pump relay fault. Well...you could imagine what thoughts are going through my mind at the moment :) Oh... I forgot to mention that I had a flight to Austin, Texas the following morning to catch... anyway...I'm stressing a bit so I texted Ryan and Kristen that BP and I wouldn't make it by lunch...

I eventually secured a towing service, which in Northern NJ on the Parkway, is a nightmare to do and got towed to a indy shop nearby I knew of...

When I got there I informed the manager (I knew him) that I suspected a failed fuel pump (thanks Kristen for your most accurate diagnosis!!!) and they quickly confirmed my suspisions.

Luckily for BP and I, they had an ///M3 fuel pump and swapped out the bad part restoring "Liquid Mercury" and we were on our way south. It was interesting seeing the fuel pump getting swapped out :)
