Sorry to hear. I did just read an article that TX is going to try the highest speed limit in the country, 85mph. It would be on the highway between Austin and Sequin. You might want to move!

so since most people go about 5 over, does that mean I could set the cruise at 90? If this comes to be it may be Texas' one redeeming quality in my eyes

My only concerns are the people who usually drive 5 under because they're freaked to go over 70. I'm not sure how many lanes the hwy is, but it could become dangerous.

we already drive 80+ on the interstate, might as well make it legal, esp. when you have 300 miles of COMPLETELY STRAIGHT road (ie, houston > san antonio)...

It's a quality kit, well worth the money. My DISA was actually ok but it still made a difference. The car idles smoother and seems more responsive. The installation instruction are on the GAS website.

Today I paid the sales tax and got my car officially registered in Florida... It was $1000 that could've gone to all new lights all around, but that's ok, necessary expenditure... I also got it washed so that I can start the initial wax, a few areas of paint repair, and wheel restoration... So, I will be starting a project thread soon with before and after details pics, and of course, all mods from there... :)

Getting compliments and comments on the car everywhere I go... Even the sales manager at the local BMW dealer (also my neighbor) said to me "Oooh, a competition package! That is a special car!"... Makes me love her even more, even though we all know the ZHP is not special. :biggrin

Been wanting to do the last step of care for my steering wheel for a few weeks but never could get to the fabric store... Then, I'm walking into my neighbor's house and there one sits, still in the package. I know them well enough to ask to be the first user...
Damn. The wheel looks and feels so close to new it's amazing. I brushed it gently, wiped it down with a damp towel and let it dry. then I shaved it carefully with the sweater shaver... Near perfection. I love the Alcantara again.

Was going to start my initial detail today, but with baby, everything is 10x harder. So, instead, I got her on jackstands, wheels off and cleaned. After scrubbing for about 4 hours, the wheels are as clean as I can get them, and they still look pretty rough. Someday I'll get them all refurb'd...

Of course, while cleaning the wheels, I noticed about 8 bubbles on the inside of 1 rear tire, and 2-3 on the inside of the other... :crying

That being said, anyone use the Michelin Pilot Sport AS+ tires yet? Thoughts?

+1 on this suggestion. Continental DWS are also a very good choice. I'd say the best tire for the money. But for a little more money you can get the Super Sports which have even better performance.

There was a thread a little while back comparing the three main tires that family members choose. I don't know what it was called though.

06-13-2012, 04:49 PM
The pilot supersports are amazing, plain and simple. The DWS are NOT summer tires - they're all season. If you want to check out contis, check out the DW, which are the summer variety. All of this is on tirerack.com.

+1000 for Pilot Super Sports. I just put them on the ZHP - they're freaking INCREDIBLE. I have PS2's on my M Coupe, and there's no comparison - a vastly improved tire in every respect. Not cheap, but actually slightly cheaper than PS2's are today. Well worth the coin IMHO.

My OEM Pilot Sports were already on when I bought my ZHP @ 58.5k miles.

I replaced the rear tires @ 73k miles due to uneven wear.

I am currently at 78.5k miles and the front tires have some meat left on them and they have a tread rating of 200 or 220.

EDIT: I paid an arm and a leg to just replace the rears with the Pilot Sports and like a week later the Super Sports were announced and they were less expensive as well.

I think you'd be proud of me.. I participated in my first auto-x last weekend. That one time doing it pretty much makes me a pro driver and all knowing in the art of driving, right? So I'm allowed to speed on public roads now too.

If I use any spacers I'll be rubbing on outside. I think the rub is only during turns where the rear end shifts and just hits the tire. The tire is perfectly fine...so I'm not concerned.

Yeah, I don't like the glare and it takes away from the cleanliness IMO. I don't think it blends well with the rest of the car.

I might be getting the yellow halogens you have or a xenon white halogen. I haven't decided yet.

Believe it or not I got them from A and A downtown, like 25$ for the pair, I woulda left the Lamin x on though I love the yellow lenses when the lights are off IMO

Cool! They could have tried to make it a little better looking though. One odd thing about the antique plates here is you aren't required to have a front plate. I'm tempted to try going without one again but I got stopped twice in a few months when I didn't have one. Arrest me red I guess. You can always count on the V1 going off every time I am approaching a cop car.

Just noticed your blinkers aren't amber like mine were. Earlier year maybe? Mine was a 72. I still think those were one of the best looking taillights ever made.

At first I wasn't really a fan of your blacked out/smoked corners and tails but I feel like your black rims pulled it all together for that look you were seemingly going after. Even though it's not really my cup of tea and I wouldn't do it to my car.. but I think yours looks good.

Thanks! I must admit... I have been thinking of doing a lighter tint for the corners... I go through phases where I like them and then want to change them. BTW I see from your sig that you have H&R sport springs. did you notice a drop of any kind after installing them? I am having a hell of a time choosing between racing and sport springs... I would like maybe a 1 inch drop all around however I worry the race springs will lower the car too much for daily driving

nike001
06-17-2012, 07:04 PM
Well the H&R Sport Cup Kit apparently comes with race springs.. and I can say I didn't really notice a drop at first. But now when I look at old pictures of my car, I can definitely notice a difference. But would anyone else on the road know I'm dropped and added spacers? Probably not.

No, it's very confusing actually, the springs in the Sport Kit are not "Race" Springs, I used to think the same thing. I called H&R... the "Touring Cup Kit" comes with Sport Springs. The "Sport Cup Kit" comes with special springs that you can't buy individually. The Race Springs are completely different springs.

midlandtech
06-17-2012, 07:18 PM
so if touring cup= Sport springs, does the sport kit have a more or less aggressive spring? comparing your two sigs it looks like its less aggressive but its not exactly apples to apples since its vert vs sedan... sounds like I need to find a pic of a sedan with sport springs and a sedan with race springs and compare the two

johnrando
06-17-2012, 07:33 PM
I'd agree that you need a sedan for comparison, but in general, the lowering between the Cup and Sport kits are about the same. The Sport Kit's are stiffer than Cup, but not that much lower. The Race springs are stiffer AND lower, by a good amount.

@Barry - apparently the red centers are a 1602/early 2002 US part. The car is a 11/68 build ('69 model). At some point they ran out of stock in the red and everything went to amber. Here's a closer look:

There were also these rare ones at some point in Europe (on a 1602):

I enlightened him on Sonax... and we both realized that neither one of us will use Iron-X ever again. Holy piss that stuff stinks to the high heavens & lingers around. When we used Iron-X on our cars, nothing really came off anyways.. so I'm good on that. Retrofit Source is selling them for $95/pair here http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=148&osCsid=grnvmm10kequae7i0envrvmi2ukfm87e

I looked at ECS as I try to order as much as possible from them because they ship so fast, but they only have the 85122CM (color-matched) and they go for $129 EACH! Jupiter, I believe you are my long lost twin!

Oh, is that so?? Alpine white over natural brown? Black cube? Nav? Cold Weather?? Hah! That's so cool.. I looked on the registry, and the same car (color, interior, doors, transmission) shows to have 4 registered. I'm guessing you're one of the 4? Awesome! I have to say, you have a gorgeous car.. :biggrin

I have what looks to be the Sport Cup Kit. I have no wheel gap whatsoever if you look at the car from the side.

Sorry, these pics are all I can provide; I rarely take shots of my car directly from the side. I'll try to remember to take some pics tomorrow.

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Automotive/BMW%20E46%20330i%20ZHP/Exterior/bf8d43d9.jpg

The pics make it look like there's more of a gap than there really is. From the side, there is none. It's only when you get at a low angle that it makes it look like a minor gap. I can safely say it's got to be an inch or more lowering than stock (I think more). Also note that I have 235/35R-18 tires in these pics, so the tires look tiny.

Today I confirmed my appointment for tint! Next wednesday she'll be getting 35% ceramic all around (except windshield of course)

Also, I took it easy on the ride home and checked my water temp every 4 seconds. 94 degrees and I know it had to have been straining my cooling system.

Don't worry about your water temp. I was at Watkins Glen last week, high 80's all day on Monday and I was revving the shit out of my car all day. Not a single problem. The car can handle it.

Thanks for the pics... I did find some pics with the race springs and it's LOW looks sexy as hell but I worry about the handling characteristics and I would have to remove the splitter as it would be just skimming the ground... Yesterday, fly back into DC at evening rush hour, I'm planning to go by the dealer to pickup my new programmable key (only received a valet key when I bought it) for the 540. Again, rush hour so heavy traffic isn't allowing me to merge onto the interstate. I see a brief gap and go for it, tach up 1st gear pretty well, grab 2nd and break the rear end loose a little (what fun, love that V8), as I'm running through 2nd notice a little bit of windshield washer fluid on the lower left side of the windshield and start to wonder how I hit the squirter while shifting. Then start to ponder if the car next to me might have squirted his windshield. Something in my feeble brain housing group asks is it really washer fluid, I start checking gauges and all are normal. As I make the 3rd to 4th shift I see a small puff of steam at the left front of the hood, and know exactly what happened. Move to the right and get to the shoulder just as the temp gauge starts to move to the right. Lift the hood and I've snapped the plastic end of the upper radiator hose -- this is a known 540 ailment, the engine can torque twist so much that it pulls the upper radiator hose off the radiator or snaps the hose or snaps the radiator neck Check, I did exactly that but fortunately it was just the hose end, my radiator is fairly new and is fine. A ride in the front of a nice rollback wrecker to my house, ordered the hose and coolant which my wife picked up this morning, and I should be back operational about an hour after work today. Heading off on vacation in the morning in the family SUV, I'll refresh more of the cooling system later.

My Visa commercial -- $129 tow bill, $55 new upper radiator hose, $20 for coolant, accelerating 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds while merging into traffic and breaking the rear end loose in a predictable and expected way -- PRICELESS!!

I was pulling up to a red light today in my work pickup and i glanced in the mirror just in time to see what I thought was an MTech II on a TiAg ZHP coupe.....Checked the side mirror and thought "nice, M3 mirrors on his ZHP". Looked again and saw the wide front fender flares and realized it was an M3! Very rare sight around here. It had ZCP wheels too but I couldn't quite see the steering wheel when he passed to my right to see if it really was a ZCP. Nice car! BTW, he had a Veteran plate on it too "B33MER".

I got back to the office and went straight to Autotrader checking M3's. :biggrin Ebay lately seems to be about 75% verts for some reason and besides I had just checked M3's there last weekend. Some nice examples on AT but most were priced a bit high.

Cleaned my interior after 4+ weeks of not being cleaned. But still.. the car was cleaner than most other cars. I'm usually the only one in it so it wasn't really dirty. I took a microfiber & some meguiars quik detail to the inside and the cloth picked up a good amount of dirt.

Then i felt ambitious and added some leatherique prestine clean over the seats for the nice leather smell

Replaced my upper radiator hose tonight and finding out the hard way that this engine likes to hold air pockets. I've heated it up,cooled it down, and bled it 3 times and am still getting a check coolant level message. Talked with a 4.4L fanatic tonight and he said sometimes you have to go thru 5-6 cycles to get all of the air out. Departing for family vacation in the morning, so it will have to wait for 10 days.

My wheels have 5 layers on them, has been on for 1 month, through one track day and is just as good as it was on first day I sprayed them... I wash the car weekly (have a special rubberized wash cloth that I use on the plasti dip) and and then I treat it very lightly with the same dressing I use on my tires

For the record:

I've had plasti dip on my winter wheels since november of 2010, and they went through the '10-11 winter as well as the '11-12 winter with no problems. DD'ed the car, constant use of pressure washers at the DIY place and no peeling from that. I only experience peeling because I used tire shine on it and it softened them up, so I peeled about 1/2 off.

I think that this stuff has proven to be tough and durable, but not something that I'd recommend doing on a whole car beacause of the stupid over-spray. Even if you take hours to mask everything off, you might as well just get a whole paint job. I think the bad things people are experiencing this is because of user error. So I say to keep it for the nice(er) cars like the audi's and whatever else that YouTube video guy does and off stock 325's (bf.c thread reference) and 99% of the time, the colors on our ZHP's are 100x better than a matte black (tacky) or a matte white plasti-dip paint job that's probably going to look very uneven and unprofessional anyways.

I don't see a problem with it at all. As long as the guy paying for it realizes its a cheap alternative to the DiNoc wrap and/or correctly painting. He should also realize that the durability may not be up to par (though others have proven otherwise, here), and that there may be special cleaning instructions and tools required. I thought the car in the video came out great.

It took me 5 cans to put 5 layers on my wheels... Like with any painting project prep work is key so I took my time and made sure the wheels were spotless prior to application... It's only been a month but it's held up well I repaired one ding in it last weekend... Used acetone rubbed the surface down so there was no noticeable depression in the surface and then sprayed a layer or 2 on... Turned out perfect

Also, I have been using PlastX on my headlights and side markers every wash. I've finally started to really notice a difference. The side markers actually leave a yellow smudge on my towel when I clean them. They're not perfectly clear from all angles, but they look 50 times better.

My headlights have finally gotten to the way that I want them to look. The one thing I hate about older BMWs is the headlight haze. It just makes them look so...outdated. What a difference it has made over the course of about a month. I did restore them a while back, but I have continually used PlastX every wash just to see if any difference would be seen.

The oil (Mobil 1 15W-50) and coolant (the blue stuff) have been changed on the 2002, just need to adjust the timing now. We've basically come to end of "driving feel" repairs on the car. Next step will be making it pretty enough for going out. Still not sure on what we're going to do for the exterior paint but Black Diopside Metallic with a German flag pinstripe on the body (OE has trim) line has pulled into the lead. In a tie for second are Sparkling Graphite Metallic and Dark Graphite Metallic. Thoughts?

Still not sure on what we're going to do for the exterior paint but Black Diopside Metallic with a German flag pinstripe on the body (OE has trim) line has pulled into the lead. In a tie for second are Sparkling Graphite Metallic and Dark Graphite Metallic. Thoughts?

Will post pics of engine progress later when I get home.

Do you have pics of other similar cars those colors you can post?

Justin - no orange. I would do the Alpina 2 tone scheme but I would first need to buy new body panels

John - not really, I haven't seen any 2002's in any of those colors as they are modern colors.

There are a bunch of cars on here that are Sparking Graphite Metallic so I won't post that one.

JP, are you going to keep the Chrome?? I think it would look bad-ass with the ZHP high gloss black shiny bits with any non-metallic BMW color, or a period metallic.

What colors are you saying no to in particular. I know you are leaning toward metallic black. I'm a sucker for Inka...any orange will do though for me. Let me know :)

Well, you know me... I'll always pick black for the right car. But, I'm just trying to keep an open mind to other colors. I'm just not feeling the darker silvers for that car, seems like something brighter would fit. Also, metallic to me, seems a little too modern for an older car???

Generally I'm saying no to bright colors. I don't want to do orange right now. As for the chrome there is just too much on the car to change it all over to black. I'll keep the bumpers, light surrounds, kidney grill and some of the trim around the windows but the hood, trunk and door trim is not going back on.

yeah, I don't think a bright color will be happening unless I do a motor swap. I need one low key car to drive around. If I do a bright color I will fully strip the car and paint everything the new color

Just ordered 2 rear tires for the car. I was hoping the tires would last a bit longer until I could get my hands on a set of square CSL reps, but trying to save some cash right now, so they will wait. That being said, I bought 2 tires in 245/35-18 for the rears for now. I will transfer them when I do get a set of square rims. Going to stick with 8.5" all around I think. :)

Oh, and I went with the Yokohama S-Drives. I just can't justify the cost of the Michelins... I've had many sets of the S-Drives and I loooove them, especially for the combination of dry summer and immensely wet rainy roads we have here in Florida. :)

Oh, that all being said, I also pumped up the flat on the car today... :foottap

So no safety colors, that's fine. What about a dark green or blue? Something with a little more character than a black?

Hmm, JP, I have to say that given the body line all the way around the car, a two tone scheme similar to the pic Ryan posted would be awesome. Personally I do NOT like plain silver, but I think some form of silver or pewter or steel grey might look good. Combine that with a silver or a metallic grey...

If you do like silver, perhaps a two tone silver with white might look good. I'm horrible at photoshop, but I got that idea just from looking at the pic in your sig. If it were me, I'd go white on top and silver on the bottom. Silver on the bottom might help the chrome blend in a bit, and it would go nicely with silver wheels... Meanwhile the white on top would give it a nice touch of difference and originality...

I agree with Dane. Silver on that car really does look good. It's such a classic color for a classic car. Then if you really want to, you can add some ///M details to make the car pop.

Iv recently developed a semi loud whine during acceleration, best I can describe it would be that it sounds like a super charger.... Lol only did it for about 2 mins then stopped and only on a pretty cold morning and stopped when it was warm, am I correct in thinking one of the first things I should check would be belts, then maybe an intake boot is damaged?

Oem pads installed at dealer.

So...if the dealer installed....and your brakes don't operate to satisifaction...I would take it back.....and tell them......you are unsatisfied.

If they don't keep the area clean, and contaminate the rotors, it will introduce high/low spots in the coming miles.

I guess I would be pissed at the dealer, and not the rotors....knowing they are a BMW Performance product.

Son of a bitch!! My little bullseye chip (about 3mm diameter) now has a crack about 1 1/2" long through it. I didn't take a before pic but this one shows the after. Not sure how this happened but I will be contacting Permatex ASAP. And I followed the instructions absolutely to the letter... I'm so pissed...

$12 for Crack!

Man I feel your pain. A few months ago a friend and I were riding in my truck and he noticed the Bullseye on the windshield. You better get that fixed he said. Ya I know but it's been 3 years, get to it later. Well 3 days later I get in the truck and find a 1 foot crack straight up the windshield! He had to go and talk smack about my Bullseye!

i looked thru the DIY for the G.A.S DISA kit and it looks straightforward enough but, eh, i don't feel like tearing apart the DISA so...i bought this:

Thanks man, you think you might know exactly how the installation process is supposed to go? I was reading the instructions on AEM's website and I'm having difficulty imagining how I'm going to do it. I also am wondering if I should solder the exhaust bung to my x-pipe, only thing is that it's after a resonator and is probably about 3-4 feet down from the cylinder head. :confused

I washed my car yesterday. I also am deodorizing the interior. The interior doesn't smell, but I just like to keep it that way by consistently doing my process. I usually let some orange peels sit overnight in the car. Then I leave a bunch of coffee grounds in a coffee filter somewhere in the car overnight. Smells great. If you wanna go the extra mile, sprinkle some baking soda on the floors and leave the box in there overnight.
