Tried recharging the AC system with some r134+ refrigerant (freon), which ended up being a fail. She still blows warm
R-134a, yes. Freon (R-12), no. If you find actual Freon or smuggle some from Mexico, do tell (I still have two E30's w/ OE a/c).
If it's still blowing hot, consider replacing the water valve. Super easy DIY and a known e46 failure point. Replaced mine @ 60k mis.

OEM alarm system
Technically last night, but we didn't finish until 1am so today... did the following:
- Oil + Filter
- Spark Plugs
- Air Filter
- Fuel Filter
- Diff Fluid
- Tranny Fluid
Just got the car two weeks ago and mostly only had oil change records, so figured I might as well do all of the above. Next up:
- L/R Wheel bearing
- Cooling system
- Hoses + Belts + Pulleys

Oil change with Amsoil 5W-40, coolant flush and fill, manual transmission fluid change with Royal Purple Synchromax (provided by me).
I had bought the stuff to do it myself, but kept getting sidetracked. Found a local Indy that works on euros to do the work. He insisted on using Amsoil, so the Redline is going back to Amazon (will discuss this on the oil thread). He also told me I didn't need to change the transmission fluid because it was lifetime. I told him to change it and he did. He only charged me $8.50 a quart for the Amsoil and his labor costs were $55 an hour, so not too bad a hit to the wallet in the end.

Basic service at 72K:
- oil/filter
- FCABs
- fix broken exhaust hanger
- reset ecu adaptations (I'm sure this is placebo, but the car feels peppier afterward every time).
- did the test for the CCV - all is good for now
Next time:
- continue with cooling system (water pump done already)
- maybe front shocks (rear done with mounts already)

I have a new found respect for anyone who details their own ride, and especially for those who detail for a living.
That's not a job for the faint of heart. Definite time commitment involved.
Learned a lot, though. Thanks to Dane, Kyle, and all of the members who have shared their detailing hints and tips. Made it much easier for me and it's greatly appreciated as always.
Oh yeah-- maybe I'll post up some pics before she gets all bug splattered on my cruise down the parkway...

So there are removable inserts of some kind on the A pillars? More info, please.
I have to do the same on a family member's e46 325i and pillar removal would make the job way easier and less of a mess.
Anyone know if the same removability applies to C pillar?
Also, 3M headliner spray adhesive: yay or nay?

The removable bit is part #3 in the diagram; it's just a little fabric-covered plastic cover over the screws to remove the A pillar. I think the C pillar just pops out, but I haven't done it so someone with experience please chime in.
And yes, 3M Super 77 multipurpose spray adhesive is what I've used with great success.

I allowed sensibility to go out the window and went ahead and purchased a set so I will be rollin' with BMW Performance cross-drilled rotors all around soon...:biggrin I realize I payed out too much for these but to me, they are worth it. Marcus,
I paid just over $500 for these. Too bad BMW decided not to make these any longer.....since this item is getting harder and harder to get...costs have gone up...
I already had the rear set (came with the car - not installed) so I had to get the front set...call me crazy! :biggrin

Ya, I have hosting through comcast as well, just takes extra time. When I got my car and made a thread about it, I was able to upload photos directly no problem. I guess 'replies' don't allow it to save bandwidth? If that's the case, I understand. :)

I know your ocd will disagree but... buy used one on ebay from a junker, more than likely it will work and the car is not a junker because of a bad mirror motor.

It does disagree, but I was looking on eBay a few days ago. I couldn't find ANY motors/actuators for the M3 mirrors. I looked again just last night and bought the only one listed for sale. It was cheap and was tested working, so hopefully that cures my issue...
Installed Bosch Icons to replace my old blades. These are hands-down the best wiper blades ever. Dead-silent, no chatter, not a single hint of smearing anywhere. The difference is night and day. The RainX ones look like they are based off of these, but every single RainX pair I've bought smears like no one's business and do not seem to work well. I don't know why.
422B (though you could easily go larger if you wanted, up to 424B) and 419B fit perfectly if anyone is interested.

Took apart my passenger door today to fix a speaker rattle and try to fix some excess window play that causes my window to sometimes go above the trim and miss the little slot it goes into when I'm driving fast. I used this DIY:
http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f3/e46-coupe-convertible-front-window-rattle-fix-diy-t53950/
It was very very easy to take the door trim off. Use a T15 though, it seems to fit better than a T20.
I gorilla glued the speaker foam as it was just sitting freely in there, and I tightened the window screws but it didn't fix the window play :(. I might need to ask my shop about this one. My speaker rattle seems to be gone now though! I'm hoping it doesn't come back. My door trim sits better now too. I think the tint shop that did the original tinting did a shitty job with getting to the windows, as they completely ripped the foam just to get to the bolts! I glued it back as best as I could though.
To anyone hesitant of taking your trim apart on your door, don't worry about the clips. They are simple rivets and are easily replaceable if in the highly unlikely event you break one. They simply sit in the trim. They pop right out of the door with a little force.

Yes sir. I totally understand now when the professional detail guy said it would take him TWO days to do it properly with my paint. He said he feels sorry for what I was going to have to do to get the majority of the swirls/scratches out. I think though that a large problem with it taking me forever is the Porter Cable 7424 that I am using. It just doesn't have the speed to break down the product fast enough. It is a "SAFE" polisher, meaning it won't burn my paint no matter how much pressure or passes I put on it. But it also takes a long time for the product to really break down.
Oh man, that's exactly how I felt yesterday. I only had to make one pass with the porter cable and polish. I could still see minor hazing in the paint at the right angle, but I didn't care. I wanted to be done! I feel for you though: your paint color doesn't hide stuff like titanium silver does!
Yea, right now my car is totally hazed up a little. You can really notice it on a black car like this. But that is normal when doing the M105 ultra-cut phase. Once I apply the SIP and SF it will totally disappear. I should have it all done today and then let the sealant/power lock do its thing overnight and then a nice wash and wax to bring it all together tomorrow. Just in time for a BMW meet on Thursday night :)

To each his own my friend....i go flat black.....so it dissapears. I wasnt trying to make it stand out. Reflective would be interesting.....but i dont know if it would be good interesting or bad intersting! Do it and lets see.....

I never use gloss on stuff like that but satin adds a nice sheen to it...

Both removal descriptions are correct. After I got the grill out of all the fasteners, I had to slightly bend it in a "U" shape to get it out. Its a little larger that the space in front of it.
Just watch all the fasteners that are attached to the bumper itself while you pull out the grill. Wouldn't want to break one...

Damn....that's crazy good.
You're telling me! The best I got driving back from Colorado was 27.5 mpg.
I took it to the dealer for an Inspection 1 service and put a new K&N air filter earlier this week. If that's what is bringing up my mpgs, it's money damn well spent!
I'll post back with reports from the rest of the trip.
Put on the Superleggeras today! :). I kept the Pilot Sports in front, as they look to have a season left in them. On the rears, I went with Pilot Super Sports. The result? Smooth and light!
FWIW, the front 18x8 Superleggeras were each 40.5# with tires; the 135s with tires were 48.2# (!). The rear Superleggera rims were 20.8# each; I'll weigh a 135 rear rim tomorrow, and post the result. The difference on the street was obvious: much quieter than my old Potenza RE040s, no tramlining, and no 'whump-whump-whump' of an out-of-round 135 front wheel. Strangely, shifts on the Steptronic seemed to lag just a bit; maybe decreased momentum at the rear wheel?
Changing the fuel filter made a HUGE difference! My engine went from sounding like Louis Armstrong, to sounding like Al Jarreau (okay, maybe Isaac Hayes). And here I thought the ZHP was SUPPOSED to sound like an out-of-tune Camaro! (Truth be told, I kinda liked that rough, rumbly edge--smooth is nice too, though).
Terry--Paypal fee coming your way tomorrow, sir...
Pictures to follow once I've washed Isaac...I mean, Ms. ZHP tomorrow! :)

I did a 500-mi road trip about 2 months ago. If your air filter is clean and your plugs are reasonably clean, you'll get over 30 mpg in a ZHP, even when cruising at 80+.
For whatever this may be worth (and I have no idea why this is) but new idler & belt tensioner pulleys significantly improved my mpg.

AE's are now wired! Phew, I know I made this harder than it needed to be but glad its done. DIY FTW!
Brand-new OEM windshield :thumbsup
Brand is Pilkington, the same as the old windshield. I did notice that the brand name is on the lower left with a BMW logo, and my rain sensor is 100% flush with my windshield. Zero bubbles whatsoever, no dust, nothing. My old window had some small bubbles in my rain sensor, and the Pilkington logo was in the lower-right with no BMW logo. The windshield looks ever-so-slightly different, too, in terms of where the black parts are.
This makes me wonder if my old windshield was actually an aftermarket made by Pilkington without a rain sensor pre-installed and had been replaced before. Being a New York car, it wouldn't surprise me.
Either way, I'm 110% satisfied with my new windshield. I had Safelite do it (my co-workers boyfriend who works for them came and did my windshield for me very carefully, using a piano wire and everything. I gave him the window replacement directions my BMW dealership gave me). No cost to me, and no more pitted mess to look through!
Maybe my rain sensor will be a bit more responsive now that it is flush.
No change in wind noise. If anything, it's slightly quieter.

Heading out to the garage to move my iSimple cable and OEM aux-input cable from the sunglasses holder to my eurotray (long version)
OK, so I failed at completing this the other day. I blame it on the third margarita I drank. It made me lazy.
However.....I did get out there and get it all done this afternoon. I love that there's enough room for the cables and that it can be totally hidden away but, it was a bit of a hassle routing the wires. Patience is the key.

What a difference! Front end is like brand new from the CABs. Steering is tighter and no more bump when coming to a full stop.
Holy smooth shifting! This is how it should be from the factory. If you have a CDV get it outta there asap. Im sure the new fluid helped as well.
Now, Im sure its placebo (and none of this maintenace or the BMW CAI)
but I swear she has a little more pull. Hopefully, when I do the Shark injector it will.
Finally, I no longer have to pull the parking brake into the back seat for the car to stay in place. :biggrin
