My step-dad filled up his 335i today and this is the 2nd time that the pump didn't shut off because he was full. So, coincidentally, this is the 2nd time that he overflowed. I was under the impression that the pump itself is responsible for shutting off the fueling process when the tank is full. Could it be something on the car that's not doing this?

Went to my first KC BMW car club's Monthly meet and met some cool people including 3 fellow ZHP owners one of which is a fellow forum member (shadowpuck) had a great time talking to everyone and seeing some really nice cars. We then went to Minddrive http://minddrive.org/tag/kansas-city-auto-show/ which is a non profit after school program for at risk kids in which they design and actually build cars. It really is amazing what kids are capable of if you simply give them an avenue to express themselves in.

the lotus is their current project and I think they are making a fiberglass body for the clear one. The clear one has already been on display throughout the country and has been to the Indy 500 as well as other auto shows including next weeks Kansas City auto show. all their cars are electric, the clear one did 400 mpg not to shabby for a bunch of kids who quite literally could be out running the streets of KC had this program not been implemented.

It is not the car! It is the automatic nozzel.
I was in this business when the automatic nozzels first came out. Back then they were just designed to shut off when the fuel kicked back to the senser.
Now they are more advanced and keep the fumes from escaping into the atmosphere.
If the nozzel doesn't kick off you should report it to the manager of the station.
We kept a spare in the place.

Just got lucky and stumbled across someone on E46 Fanatics that had a couple. So Charlie and I snapped them up.

I wouldn't be too surprised if dealers still had them, but really hit or miss. I have also heard of some dealers asking around $1k for them. I am sure if you wait around long enough you will come across one on ebay. One Fanatic just mention he swiped one on ebay for $300. I paid more than that, but I still think it was a fair price.

Remember when the performance intakes were just $325 from ECS two months ago? They're like $700 now....

Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk

Part of the reason I never bought one of these strut bars when they were on sale was I wasn't crazy about having to do the mods needed (move positive cable terminal and cut and splice the wires for the hood switch) but I was snooping around the monster thread at E46f and found this post....

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=12856364&postcount=999

http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-ZHP-misc/i-fQRvbd5/0/XL/Alarm-5-XL.jpg

That's how I'll be mounting mine to avoid the wire splicing. Looks cleaner too without the butt connectors and added wire for the hood switch. Here's a link to another thread with the install pdf in post 26.......

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=780410&highlight=bmw+performance+strut+brace

Mine should be here next Thur. Can't wait! Unfortunately, I failed to ask if it came with the hardware before I bought it.........he claimed the dealer he bought it from told him you re-use your old nuts, not true. It takes a special nut on 4 of the strut mount studs so now I have to order the hardware. Comes to just over $50 at Husker BMW. This gives me a chance to order a few other odds and ends I needed.

No. It was tedious, but not hard. If I hadn't broken the wiring clip off the alternator during reinstall, it would have been a less than 5 hr job going really slowly, labeling everything. It turned into a 12 hour job because of that. I ended up using a soldering iron to melt the clip back in place after the epoxy failed.

I got a set of metric wrenches. Ideally the 8 or 9mm that I need to bleed brakes.... Going to tackle that tomorrow with the Ate Typ 200 and Motive Power Bleeder.

Rotors are rotors are rotors. I'll review them but they're normal rotors. lol The coating on the rotor surface was removed after driving a couple blocks. I think the anti-corrosion Coat Z is to interface between the surfaces that normally rust (ie-hub to rotor, rotor to wheel).

66k. It was the closest to the nose of the car. My car has had 2 vcg replacements. The plug did look a little wet in my opinion and thinking maybe oil, but not sure and I could use some advice.

Just fyi, if you have a manual and plan to do the clutch bleed also, it takes a different size wrench. At least on my 2004 it does. 6mm for the clutch and 8mm for the brakes.

Right, so says everybody, which is why I'm interested in AKG vs. PowerFlex FCABs.

The PO replaced the FCAs and FCABs between 90,000 and 100K miles. My car has 160,000 miles, so they actually 60-70K miles old. But I don't get any wheel wiggle nor clunking or vibration under braking. I can't move them more than 2mm by hand. My indie pushed on the FCAs with a prybar about 3,000 miles ago and showed me the FCABs moving. He said they're need to be replaced fairly soon, but not right this moment. I would say handling and steering are fine, but since I've never driven an E46/ZHP with fresh FCABs, I don't actually know what it should feel like.

Maybe I can get one of the San Diego fanatics to drive my car at an AutoX and tell me if the steering feels vague. The instructors who've driven the car never said anything about steering precision but they don't push it that hard when they're driving.

I was very lucky to get this one, thanks to Steve. He did the footwork to contact the seller and let them know about me and that I was seriously interested in purchasing the remaining strut bar. There was a PM on E46F from another forum member expressing his interest but the seller responded to my PM and told me that he would sell his remaining strut bar to me. I jumped on this and made the drive to the Danbury, CT area (about 2 hours drive from me) to pick this up personally. Even with all the unfortunate events on my return trip, it was still well worth grabbing this strut bar to me.

On another note, looks like I will be sourcing a brand new Style 135 rim to replace my damaged rear wheel, then I will have to wait another pay period to buy a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports to set up the ZHP again.....In the end the ZHP will be set up nicely and will show the love I put into her...:)

tried to pop in my new homelink roof switch. found what I thought was the plug, took out the panel, cut the hole, poped in the unit, went out to my car to plug it in, wasn't the right plug. found the right plug - not there, it had been clipped out. AWESOME. so its not like I can just return the part cuz I already cut my roof panel.

any suggestions?
i just need the small white male ended switch on the cars end to plug it in.

bavarian auto recycling said $45 for any harness... this is like $.56 of plastic

As Udub already knows, I clipped the connector in question out of a wrecked E46 yesterday. They didn't charge me anything but these salvage yards are all over the map on pricing. Some won't allow clipping connectors at all, preferring instead to sell complete wiring harnesses. And other yards have a minimum charge of $35 for anything at all.

Nonetheless, those yards are endlessly fascinating if they stock interesting makes & models. And I've discovered it's quite the industry here in DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth.)

To answer questions that arose after I initially posted (post #4063 within this thread), neither of the cars pictured was a ZHP. You can determine pre or post facelift by the location of the blinker lens in the fender. That same photo, re-posted below, is a good example. The E46 on top being post-facelift.

I wonder... what kind of interior trim were in those two cars, do you remember? I'm looking for some trim for a custom trim mod. Preferably something that's matte, no wood. Piano black is also acceptable...

It was the myrtle wood trim in the upper of the 2 cars. Good condition. I took the driver door piece for my mother's E46. Hers had a hairline crack, barely noticeable. Still have it. If anyone wants it, PM me. Would be an acceptable replacement if yours is banged up, etc. Not relevant for ZHP.

I did also see unique trim in another E46 sedan. Was not the usual "brushed aluminum" trim found in so many E46 models. It was a gray (silver?) metallic-look. Pretty cool depending upon your interior color. The entire LR door was gone, tho, and presumably the trim piece along with.

After work I cleaned my wheels, tires, vacuumed, and wiped down my door jambs with a wet micofiber. I also got rid of some dust that has been accumulating.

The fabric cleaner we have at work in an orange aerosol can is awesome. I use it on pretty much everything. Nice matte look to it.

It's great. I use the fabric cleaner on cars with lighter colored leather interiors and it removes almost anything. Even on black leather, after using it you can turn over the microfiber and see the dirt (not dye) that came off the seat.

Today I washed my car. Did a good job on it this time instead of a normal quick wash. Sonax on the wheels etc etc.

Then it rained. Then I brought it to a buddy who works at a local garage. He told me to bring it up since he was bored. So we waxed my wheels, adjusted my e-brake, and did a CDV delete. Loving it so far. Still mad that after I washed my car it rains.. oh well.

Fill coolant, let drain in to reservoir, fill coolant, repeat. My guess is that you had your heat on. When you turn your heat on, coolant goes in to your heating core, which probably was just enough to have your coolant light come on.

Yes! I turned it on all the way. When the Indy replaced my water pump he asked me if i had BMW coolant. I had 1/3 coolant in the bottle. Probably going to fill it up.

Wasn't there some trick about installing those with our cars and having the ribbons match up?

cakM3
03-09-2012, 10:43 AM
John,

With OEM ///M3 side mirrors you have to swap out the motors. The motors that come with the OEM ///M3 side mirrors are wired, not ribbon. The challenging part is mounting the ribbon motors so that when you pop on the mirrors they are centered on the mirror housing. You have to make modifications to the baseplate where the motor mounts and that takes time and patience.

I helped BP sort out his mirror issues on his passenger ///M3 side mirror and it took us most of the day to get is pretty much sorted out. Easier to do with two people. Oh, I almost forgot... for those who have sedans, you also have to modify the baseplates on these mirrors for them to fit. Something you guys with coupes and verts don't have to worry about. All of us with ribbon motors, however, have to deal with lining up and mounting the ribbon motors on the M3 mirror baseplate inside the mirror housing...

After a week of messy weather and cold, I managed to get my ZHP washed again....always nice to have a clean ZHP :biggrin

Had my first ever track time! Our local BMWCCA club held its monthly meeting this morning at the brand new NOLA Motorsports Park which is only 15 minutes from downtown. NOLA MSP recently finished construction on the karting and north track. The track management gave us their presentation and said that in its longest configuration the karting track (1.4 miles) and the entire north+south track when completed (5.5 miles) are among the longest in the US.

While it wasn't really track time, per say, we were allowed to take our cars in a group on two parade laps of the north track at a pretty fast clip. Hopefully once the track is complete and management has recovered some of the cost of construction, the daily prices will come down some and our BMW club will be able to have some real events out there.

We had a good turnout with a beautiful 3.0 CSL, E30 M3, two e36 and two E46 M3s, 1M, and assorted E30, 36, 39, 46s, but only one ZHP. That doesn't make me special like the CSL, right? I only grabbed a few quick shots

Today I did my oil filter housing gasket. And while I was in there, I replaced the lower intake boot, cleaned my DISA, removed a mouse nest from my alternator intake housing (the part attached to the alternator), replaced my cabin air filter, changed my oil filter, and filled up with a nice fresh batch of Mobil 5W-30 synthetic. If Autohaus had sent me the right tensioner, I would have replaced that, to. But they sent the wrong one. Not just the wrong one, but one that isn't even for my car.

Since the tensioner I have is the gas piston type, I think I'll just be replacing the pulley anyway. I'll be ordering the pulley, my upper intake hose, and a FSR before long.

Something I have to live with I guess. There was just a 3.0 X5 that needed to be torn down and rebuilt for drinking oil.. good for the owner that it was covered under warranty.

I found out that theres a CB e46 M3 ZCP at the dealer that might be for sale soon since the owner is going back to Kuwait. Too bad that it needs $3k worth of work because of the SMG. Might be kinda worth it if it can be acquired for a low price.

I ended up pulling and twisting from the top but I had to be extremely careful not to break the bracket that goes onto the radiator. Make sure all the clips and stuff are loose on the bottom. UGH.. oil light came on today after turning her off. I changed my oil at 113,600... and it's about 117,400 miles now. I've also added a quart a couple months ago as well.. Not sure what to do about it now.

Does it burn oil- as in it's on the exhaust tips? Have you ever done any type of carbon cleanup? Do you know what the previous oil change intervals were (before you bought it)?

I've never seen oil on the exhaust tips so I don't know. No carbon cleanup was ever done.. only about 2 bottles of Chevron Techron injector cleaner. I'm afraid to use seafoam or anything of that sort in fear of messing anything up. I've heard that it trashes o2 sensors. I have to find the PO's email from when I got it. I'm assuming he did 15k intervals.. or maybe even half that because when I did my VCG + VANOS, the thing was clean as hell.

Can anyone spot anything wrong with this? This is my left (driver) rear side and this corner seems to squat down when I make quick right hand turns. It's pretty spongey and almost seems like a tire is flat. On Sunday I even pulled over to check my rear tire because I thought something was wrong.

I jacked up the rear end to take a look at the shock and snapped this picture. I sent this picture to Terra and he said that he thinks my shock mount is destroyed and that the bump stop shouldn't be that high. I have no idea what a normal one looks like so I have zero knowledge on this. I'm assuming my shock is done for.

Yesterday, I almost took a crowbar to the windshield but decided instead to rip through the gears to relieve some frustration and try to convince myself that this car may be worth keeping. After spending $2000 a little over a month ago on A/C repairs, my A/C is behaving like it is low on refrigerant again, blowing warm air out of the passenger side vents. I'll call the shop that did the work in a bit, but right now I'm really let down that BMW can't build A/C systems that are reliable. Or maybe my 0/3 track record when it comes to BMW and A/C is a sign from God that I should buy a Ford.:mob:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad

LOL, you are probably right. The windows work as of now, but it is difficult to call it The Ultimate Driving Machine when all you want to do is get out of the car because you are drowning in sweat from just driving to/from work in a suit. Even this early in the year, the heat and humidity are having a race to see who can reach 90 earliest in the morning. Life goes on, I just needed a place to vent.

You just need a piece of plastic strap. Can't really describe it very well and I don't have one handy to take a pic but like the ones used to hold a pile of newspapers together when they deliver them to the store. Or they use them to strap stuff to pallets.

Yes, check out your new one and see where the grommets are. That's where you need to apply the most pressure to pull up, as that's all that holding it in. You can even break the old pins as they aren't going to do anything, just push the broken piece out.

Thanks for the tips but I tried all of that except the strap thingy but prob wouldn't of worked. I couldnt even get the dental floss in between the roundel and the paint. It got to the point where I was tearing up the roundel with the tinniest screwdriver I had, so shortly after that I stopped. Even then it barely lifted up.....

Guess I need to try a combination of a screwdriver and strap thing. I'm sure I can find one at work.

Those strap things should work perfectly, just push it in at the top with a little sawing motion and work it down the side, then pull the roundel up.

Have you replaced the water valve? Also known as heater control valve. It's crazy easy but do it when stone cold so you won't lose any coolant. I have a DIY bookmarked for that. PM me if you want me to dig it up. ECS has a good price on the part. It's located under the upper intake boot.

No, as far as I know it is original. My heater works fine though, blows hot when set to hot and ambient when set to cold. But when you turn the A/C on and engage the compressor, the air doesn't get cold, even with the dash dial set to 3 cold dots and the temp on 59*. I don't understand how the heater valve would impact the A/C, but I guess I have seen crazier things...

The car is back in the shop that originally did the work. I'll let yall know what they find.

aurelius
03-16-2012, 12:17 PM
That's the classic symptom of a stuck heater valve. Save yourself some bucks and order one today and pop it in when it arrives.

At the very least don't let the shop nail you for a bunch of labor. This would take a pro mechanic 15 mins at most.

Very nice Ryan!

Today I drove the poo out of the car! I am spending the weekend at Deals Gap, NC aka Tail of the Dragon. Getting used to how the car handles when pushed to the edge.

Quick question....is there supposed to be a rubber seal on the cap of the power steering? I guess from the quick switch back turns I am getting some fluid to come out. Looks like there is one there but might be dried out.

The little yellow light between the gauges likes winking at me, lol.

David stopped by and did some maintenance on his ZHP. I'll let him chime in about that. He did, however, let me drive his ZHP, and wow. It was the first I've ever driven a ZHP and it is sweet. I really like the power bands. Compared to my 323i, the ZHP has more low rpm juice (Yes I know there's more hp but it was just nice to feel it!). Also for an automatic it shifted really smoothly and had good throttle response. He's got the H&R cup springs on and the ride was firm yet very comfortable. Overall I was very impressed. Also, OE front rotors list at $320 for the pair, the performance floating cross-drilled are $500... Still not exactly cheap.

To give you a price comparison, brand new OE rotors for my 2002 are $30 each
