Fixed my slouching a pillars. Looking at the phone pictures they don't look that bad but it was annoying. Even more annoying -- those 3 t20 screws holding the pillars in. The afyer pictures look ok, but in person they look great! I used 3M 77 and it has no discoloration. Thanks for the DIY DW.

Did a bunch of stuff this weekend. Didn't finish though. Got:

oil/filter - 0w40 m1
mtx oil redline MTL
diff oil redline 75w90
fuel filter
CDV deleted

started rear brakes - need pads & rotors.

Everything was surprisingly straight forward. Doing most of this as preventative measures as my car is new to me with ~56k on it and I didn't have a detailed history. Everything is pretty well laid out and easy to get to. Had a couple of hangups, one being the fuel filter. The splash guard has some awkwardly placed screws... and then of course I spilled gas everywhere. I ran the car dry but that stuff gushes out! Even the filter itself holds a surprising amount. Replaced the 3 hose clamps while I was there. The rubber hose is probably the worst part. Those things just do not want to come off the filter tubes. The cold does not help that I am sure.

Started brakes but ran out of time and, you know, had to watch some playoffs today (go bmore ;) Rear rotor did not want to come off. Resorted to thwacking it real hard with a hammer. Worked like a charm! So my car is up on stands still. Hopefully I can finish tomorrow. I found the source of my slow leak in right rear tire - nail in it. Gotta take that somewhere to get patched in the AM. Car should be feeling fresh by Tuesday!

Up next in a few weeks or so - VCG, vanos, and plugs...

Old? I just turned 59. And my body is breaking down. Especially my hands due to lots of wear and tear when I was younger. I already had two surgeries on both hands.... and possibly more to come. I couldn't hold tools and small parts like I used to....kept on dropping them. Another reason why my tracking days are over. My reflex has turned for the worse. One of these days, I will have to have some of the difficult repairs done by Shane. Hey, keep the economy going.......

Well I went and got 4 new winter tires today yay!!!!! I got 4 Cooper Weather-Master S/T 2's and man it feels like a completely different car!! I love them....set me back anout $750 for all four plus free rotation and balance for the life of the tire and road certs so if they ever become unrepairable then they will replace them for free....

Then the tech came out and said he had some bad news..... :facepalm

idk how this happened but I'm glad that I got my tires changed and found this before I ended up finding it out on the side of the road is the cold and snow...then they guy tried to sell me some cheap aftermarket wheels he thought were really cool :thumbsup

You don't necessary have to get new wheels; you could take it to a wheel repair place. They could weld it for you. Much cheaper than a new set of wheels. :)

Magic Eraser. I had heard it worked but never tried it. It provides amazing results. The sponge acts like a superfine sandpaper, that I believe removed all old wax, PC products, BlackWow, Forever Black, and environmentals.

Had a pretty busy day doing the following:

1. Routed the Ipod cable from the Intravee II in the trunk to the center console. One of the occassional hassles of the Intravee is that the Ipod goes into sleep mode if you don't use it within approximately 36 hours, and I have never had any luck setting wake-up alarms on the Ipod. So I would have to open the trunk, then open the access panel on the left side where I had the Ipod stealthly stored, and re-set it. The access panel is tough to open in my car because it is partially blocked by my BSW d110.e46s subwoofer. This procedure isn't really that hard to do, but it sucks when I don't think to do it before I start driving. The Ipod now sits in the small tray between the cupholders and coinholder, so I can re-set while sitting at a stop light. Can't even see it when the armrest is down. BTW, I am otherwise very happy with the Intravee and the BSW sub.

2. Switched to red-clear-red tail lights, clear side markers and clear front corners. New lights are Depo, which seem to be decent quality. I purchased all of these, including bulbs, off Ebay for $188.95 including free shipping. Link to auction is below, but the seller was fishcake321 if this link expires. Overall, I am very happy with this look on my Imola Red sedan - to me the amber just seemed out of place.

3. Installed gloss black kidney grills from Khoalty. I was short on time so I rushed this install, and for some reason one of the grills will not snap in completely. Stays in place until you close the hood, and the top of the grill pops out. Probably just need to re-install with a little more care. Not sure I am sold on the black grill look yet, but since I broke some clips on the OEM chrome grills (they are very brittle!), I will live with the black ones for awhile!

Today I am installing my BSW Stage 1 speaker upgrade, to go with the BSW subwoofer. Will report back with my impressions.

Hey bro. I installed it today man you wont be able to hear it from 1 meter away. The power is too low i tried the other outlets they give high power but it keeps beeping. Anyways i took it out.. :/ Kinda got dissapointed but hey its only $5 xD

you will need a non switched 12v constant, ground, and switched 12 v. hook all those to the relay (can be found at autozone) and run the 12v output from the relay to the beeper. it allows for a stronger 12v signal to be sent to the accessory. its a really easy hook up hardest part is going to be finding the wires to tap into that fit the bill

We ran the hose until outflow was clear water only. It was amazing to see how much more old coolant came out of the block. We then opened the lower plug for a second system draining. The method did suggest a gravity drain does not remove all the old coolant. We are also considering getting an old expansion tank cap, fitting it with an air barb, and blowing pressure modulated air through the system following the usual gravity drain. Again, we would re-fit the lower plug and force any remaining contents to exit the block opening. Or, we can use both water and air, one to follow the other. Methods in progress.....

Good idea! For whatever reason, when I did my cooling system, I didn't get all the coolant drained. Next time I will try the hose in the expansion tank trick. I have an old cap, might try fitting a garden hose fitting to it somehow to get some more pressure with the flush. Should work good either way though.

Thanks! It does work pretty slick. We found the water pressure through the garden hose was more than adequate to further flush the block as well as the front of the system.

Does anyone have an idea for a switch? I was thinking about taking the trigger wire from the ECU and using that wire to tap in to the parking lights, and then use that for my trigger. So when I turn my parking lights on, my angel eyes will come on. Will that work? Or something like it..

I wired mine into the head light switch in the car so when the parking lights come on so do my angel eyes... I used a relay so it didn't draw any power from that wire

As from my experience wiring my AE's in my e39's parking lights... no. There were 3 wires in my e39. Ground, one power, and one that controlled the blinking. You were supposed to tap in to the normal power one. if you tapped in to the other one, then yes.. it would blink.


The guy who installed mine wired mine into the interior lights so that when I unlock the car, open the door, or when the car is on, the AEs are on.

Mine do this too. There is a trigger wire that goes in to your glove box that turns the AE's on when your interior lights are on. There is another wire going to your ECU that tells the AE's to stay on w/ the engine after your interior lights go out.

I think nike wants more control of his AE's, Normal setup is to tap in the wire in the ECU that makes your AE's act like DRL's. (on all the time)

Your parking lights are only on when when you have the headlight switched to them (first click to the right) and when the headlights are fully on (two clicks to the right) on your LCM.

Well, found out that the Magic Eraser trick didn't really do anything to my trim.

I also went a little overboard with cleaning it today. First I took it to the self serve power wash place to get the heavy grime off. Then I brought it home and washed it in my garage. After that I put a nice coat of some Meguiars finishing wax I had laying around that I never got to use. Then I cleaned my interior all up nice and tidy. Took about 3hrs.

Yeah, I think they were $120 normally priced. They didn't come with a wiring harness though, I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron...so had them installed in about 1.5 hours with some hook-up wire. I'd be willing to face-time to help install.

I got my LED angel eyes from JleviSW.....heck, if I were within short driving distance from you, I'd install them for you. Umnitza has an awesome install video and guide. It's not that difficult if you take your time on the install. My first time I too was apprehensive about tapping into my ECU but the install guides proved very helpful. If you have any questions concerning angel eye installs PM me and I'll be happy to help you as much as I can :thumbsup

It's even tougher with AL lights. Most of the time I partially remove the light itself to get everything in and on normal. I have a VERY short temper when it comes to things like this.

Well, my car is currently 'stuck' on the alignment rack at work. But anywho.. I have my 17" winter tires, will that affect my alignment specs? The tech doing it isn't really a tech.. He's a kid that's been working here for a while now. He's hourly, so they had him do It since I'm getting this re-done for free since after my last alignment, g steering wheel was off center. So he's the only one that would do it.

i swapped out my keys. i try to do this every month but have slacked the past couple months.

i also made an appointment monday at a new indie shop that i was referred to. i came across a few highly commendatory reviews of this really small shop that services BMWs exclusively. apparently the first thing they do is a one hour inspection of all problematic bimmer areas (cabs, cooling, vanos, etc) to really "get to know" your car before making any recommendations. i'm tired of going to places where i'm just another order sheet. i want these guys to love my car as much as i do and be excited about maintaining it. i have a pretty good idea of the maintenance items i need to take care of, but for the procedures i can't or won't do myself, i want them to be on the same page 100% and not try to talk me out or into something or sell me something just to boost profits. i want them to know that i plan on maintaining the car myself to a significant extent, and accordingly to tell me what to look for and what not. i love the library of knowledge that you guys provide with pics and DIY guides and youtube videos, but nothing can replace physically working on your own car...i'm hoping they will get where i'm coming from.

so i'm dropping the car off monday and am eager to hear what they have to say. i took a road trip to austin last weekend and the car was pulling left on the highway, so i'm gonna start off with a realignment and go from there.

The biggest thing is the car has too much power that you can never use. Spirited onramp driving puts you at 120mph before you hit the interstate, yet you feel like you're going 60mph. And 0-35mph is the most frustrating thing in the word. This shifts are ridiculously horrible in "auto" mode, you can't hardly touch the gas w/out the traction control taking over on take off, and then when the shift to 2nd happens, it feels like the car shut off, turned back on, and then starts to go again. When I'd be using it for a DD in town, all this is a huge turn off. Even paddle shifting doesn't eliminate the horrible shifts.

The car was amazing on the curvy back roads, but cruising at 65-70 in a 45 zone, 1) felt like you were doing the speedlimit, 2) there's really no need for shifting, leave it in 2nd for assisted braking or leaving it in 3rd so the drone (a beautiful drone though) of the v10 at 4-5000rmps doesn't get annoying, 3) the car just does everything for you, there's no driver really, just turn the wheel, no matter the speed/ approach angle/ or acceleration out of the corner , and you're going that way flawlessly, and 4) I see way too many speeding tickets in the future.

The car is a race car. Not meant for the average driving. The entire time you drive it you feel those 500 horses kicking a screaming to let loose. It bucks and lurches at low rmps, like a great race horse forced to work the kiddie pony ride. But, once you let those ponies free you're breaking the law in less than 2 seconds, and that's excessively breaking the law. There's no time for enjoyment.

The best thing in the world about this car, imo, is the down shift. Put your foot in it, down shift, and it's smooth neck breaking acceleration. Pure adrenaline. (And then you're breaking the law.) And it's scary how fast this car can handle a corner. Like too fast. Just turn the wheel, hang on, and hope nobody's on the other side of the curve. However, the brakes are also amazing.

It's an amazing piece of machinery and if it was on the track all the hard shifts would be forgotten, but my dream car has to be fun around town and on the back roads. And when I got back in Lucy, I loved her more than ever. I can wind through the gears, feel every mph, and still feel like I am the driver, not the steering wheel manager being taken for a ride.

Good news, looks like my dream car is going to be a little more affordable! E46 M3 maybe? ZHP? 535i (once they put the dual clutch in them)? Who knows? Just need to get out and drive more cars.

Good read! I completely agree with you. The M5's are horrible monsters just waiting to be let out of the closet. I've only driven a couple, but no chances to really sling them around. Your post is exactly why I love my ZHP. I feel comfortable putting it through the gears without breaking the law in ~2 seconds.

Wait a minute... double sided tape? I would not trust that on the pedals (dead pedal would be fine). I would definitely use screws on the brake pedal at a minimum

Today, Wobbie received fresh engine oil and filter, fresh tranny and diff fluid.

Also paid Charlie the Master Electronic Technician a visit and had him perform his usual super professional angel eye harness replacement. I had one, but it was slightly dysfunctional, so I had him install a new harness. This man is a pure electronics genius and his craftsmanship is absolutely top notch.

For reference, I know how to do the install and am capable of doing it myself. I had Charlie do it because he knows how to do it right. Freakin' genius.

We did all that to make my city lights work. Gorgeous, they are. Coupled with my yellow high beam bowls, they look spectacular in person. My phone pics don't do the lights justice.

Got one FX-R projector in, but the auto-leveling isn't working. I can hear the motor going but it's not moving the headlight. So I gotta figure that out.

Started on the other side using the dremel to get enough room to put the projector in, and I think I cut too much. The e46 M3 is exactly what I need to drive. Only thing, I love 4 doors. I've run some different numbers and maybe even the e90 335i might be right for me.


Good read! I completely agree with you. The M5's are horrible monsters just waiting to be let out of the closet. I've only driven a couple, but no chances to really sling them around. Your post is exactly why I love my ZHP. I feel comfortable putting it through the gears without breaking the law in ~2 seconds.

IIRC, the 535 is/does/will come in a dual clutch, no? I could have sworn I drove one w/ a Dual Clutch

I know the 535 doesn't come with one right now. It is available with a sport automatic which is a 8speed "short throw" which I have heard is a big difference, not the 7speed dual clutch like the 135, and 335. I like the size of a 5series, but the sportiness needs to be there too.

Since I possibly ruined my one frame/bracket, I need a new one. and since ZKW ones are kind of hard to source, I'm trying to figure out if the AL frames from an M3 or such will fit in to a ZKW headlight housing. In your DIY, You seemingly used your stock ZKW frame/bracket and mounted your M3 projectors on that.

Wait a minute... double sided tape? I would not trust that on the pedals (dead pedal would be fine). I would definitely use screws on the brake pedal at a minimum

Ya, that's just on the deadpedal. I have some 3M tape though that I wouldn't hesitate to use on all of them and I probably will just use that on the gas pedal. But they do come with a nice metal drilling template for the clutch and brake to make it easy to get the screw holes right.

I met Joe (bimmeroyta) yesterday and he played that beautiful music known as the UUC TSE3 exhaust. Holy s*#!, that thing is glorious. Imma goona get me one. It's the way a car should sound. As for the folks who say it's too loud, I'm not sure I get that. Everyone has a different tolerance, but I was expecting TOO LOUD. For me, it's perfect... quiet at idle and a beast at revs. It's almost making me regret the H&R Cup Kit purchase. I know, handling before music, but that exhaust note is intoxicating. Music first! :) But since I have the kit, I set up an appointment to install. I'll have to save my pennies for the exhaust.

today i finally made use of all the cleaning/detailing supplies i've bought recently. after the past week of nasty rainy weather, it's finally gotten back to good ol sunny tx weather. spent about 4 hours washing and detailing today. strangely, there were dozens of these tiny little pinhead size 'tar balls' all over the car, i mean everywhere...i have no idea what they really were and where they came from. so i ended up rinsing, washing, buffing the tar balls out, rinsing, washing again, rinsing, drying, waxing, drying. somewhere in there i sonax'd the wheels. i also applied the wolf's glass sealant to all the exterior glass. then applied tire shine gel and used stoner invisible glass on all the interior glass. then used adams in 'n out spray on the engine bay. both the invisible glass and the in n out spray are awesome. finally, i checked the air on all the tires and made sure they were up to spec. then i called it a day. car looks pretty good. here are a couple crappy cell phone pics.

It's the little mods like these that I like the most. It doesn't make it faster or handle better, it just shows your car is different, and that you do you own car work.

so i picked up my car from this new shop where they did a through "introductory inspection and analysis" type deal. found out a lot that i already knew, but some important new stuff as well. overall, i came away with a great feeling regarding the shop, and some eye opening insight regarding the car itself. had a good 30 min chat with the service guy, who was extremely knowledgable in all things bimmer related. told him where i was coming from on the maintenance/mod front, what i expected, and how excited i was to be in the hands of someone who was on the same page. here are the highlights of the inspection:

- so the #1 priority according to him, somewhat predictably, was the cooling system. owning and E46 approaching 60k...SOP as far as i'm concerned. having said that, he also flat out told me it's a major money maker for them as most owners totally neglect their cooling systems, so i realize he was going with the money maker. he also recommended at the least doing a coolant flush, which should be done every three years regardless of mileage. i agree.
- the CABs are shot. i figured this since i have been noticing the dreaded clunk on occasional hard deceleration over speedbumps. sigh...but i knew i needed to do this. Meyle HD here we come...
- he said the VCG looks great, no sign of leakage. i have a brand new one though, so when i do the VANOS soon, i will replace anyway.
- needs new plugs. i already knew this.
- there are a few minor intake boot cracks, no big ones, but something to consider replacing soon.
- he rated the brakes, roughly 30-35% life left all around, i was pleasantly surprised given these are original to the car.
- recommended another PS fluid flush. i told him i did this recently, but i only went through one quart of new fluid. he recommended going through at least 3. but that's an easy DIY...

- the most unfortunate news was when he revealed the right front strut tower is slightly bowed, probably due to a large impact. the 2 right wheels are also slightly bent, probably from the same impact that bowed the strut tower. so now i'm wanting to get a strut brace, and definitely want to get the wheels straightened out. since i was planning on a full refinish of all 4 wheels anyway, i guess straightening 2 of them additionally isn't so bad.

overall, i feel pretty good about the car now that i've had someone that i truly trust go over every nook and cranny. got a plan in place and know what to do. now it's time to get some money saved up...

Yes I know I could have done two 17215 for cheaper, but Amazon (the cheapest I found) only had one in stock and weren't getting more until mid-march, hence dropping an extra $20 to get the 17216. From inspection I'm inclined to agree with everybody else that they are identical besides the gray/black wire sleeve. Overall a very easy DIY, even easier than an oil change I'd say.

I'm not sure on the removal of the door trim, but the bumper trim is easily done with some non-marring tools or a flat head if you're careful. Just start near the off center gap where the two pieces come together and pry up. After you get it up enough to fit your fingers in you'll be able to pry it off because they only clip in (on an '05 sedan). The trim is pushed into the bumper a little bit nearest the doors if that makes sense. So once you've pryed off the plastic trim just pull out from the side bumper, but be careful so you don't chip the paint. The door pieces should be a little more difficult because they have a special piece that the trim pushes into like the hood emblem (rubber or plastic clip).

^^This is a great pretty good description. Just a side note, you're going to break clips on the door moldings. Go ahead and buy some more before you remove the moldings.

Bumper trim looks easy enough. I did notice from RealOEM that side mouldings are held by unknown number of clamps and grommets. Might just leave the side mouldings alone and tape around the edges so that Black on Black will not spill over the paint job......

If you are not painting the trim and just using the back to black I would not worry too much, its similar to tire dressing. Back to black is good for one or two car washes and needs regular applications.

After work I used my California duster to get the fine layer of dust off. Then I went to the gas station to vacuum the interior. I also dusted my interior and Mr. Clean Magic Erased my steering wheel, shift knob, and center controls. Everything looks literally brand new!

Yeah, that's when the damned thing was oozing wax out of it. I hated the layer of smeary wax it left when I used it.
Fast forward many months to today; I checked it and all of the wax perspired onto the bag it's in, effectively leaving the actual duster part dry. Precisely what I wanted. Confirmed on the paint that there is no smeary shiat on the finish. Win.

today i made an appt to get my CABs done as well as my 2 right side wheels straightened. gonna get this done during my upcoming vaca in a week and a half.

also contemplating the cooling system refresh. after more consideration, i think this takes priority over Vanos/VCG at this point. so i may or may not have the shop do that too. they are writing up an estimate. the nice thing is, the guy said they would negotiate parts down to what i could get them for thru a site like ECS or getbmwparts. and everything is guaranteed to be OE parts. sweet.

Additionally performed the weekly rotate and barrel clean on the wheels.... Plus a fresh coat of wax.
