Yeah Terra just told me that's what I have to do. I have a new OEM alcantara shift boot, so I'm not tearing that apart. Terra said he has his old M3 boot that's all wasted that he's going to look for and give to me. So then I'll just sell this OEM boot.
EDIT: Steering wheel is in!!

This has been on my to do list. I figured I'll do it come springtime, as winter will just dirty it up again. Plus it's too cold here now to be messing around outside for an extended amount of time.

Nice! Yeah, I just didn't like the look of "BMW recommends Castrol"; besides the round cap just feels better in your hand than the square one
EDIT: just noticed yours is not exactly the same as mine. Mine has a ///M where you have the oil can and doesn't say the Castrol stuff on the bezel. I didn't know that one existed but I do like!

Yeah JP, ordered the part under my ///M3 VIN at the dealership and this is what you now get. Not going to swap oil caps between the ///M and ZHP though...:) Still looks great and I agree....feels so much better when opening the cap over the square one. :thumbsup

No place to lift the front end from up there. Have to do it from the jack points or frame rails on the sides.
Would be damn convenient if you could.
I've thought about doing it with this car since the PO already bent it all up.

This is the one I used. Very straightforward. Ignore the 10 clicks thing about loosening it back up, just do it until the wheel can turn some. I had to adjust the linkages more after I got it back on the ground since the right one was grabbing more than the left. But now, they're even and leave even skid marks and engage at the same time haha

Yeah those are definitely "in with another big order" type items. Tischer wanted $11 shipping for $7 worth of parts, TBPS wanted $5 for $7. Both are pretty wasteful on my part but.......eh.

Rinsed the salty/sandy crap off it. I can't believe running through one tiny little 8-foot patch of salt (why the hell did that town salt, anyway?) could cake the entire side of my car.

You don't necessarily have to give it up. I remember Turner selling pads for certain aftermarket calipers, and I remember StopTech being one of them. They might have a ceramic your application...

Have you seen my thread on Iron X in the detailing section? If it any of it is stuck to the wheels after a normal cleaning it could help! Also, wheel tax is great but it doesn't really prevent brake dust buildup. I don't know if you are that perturbed by the brake dust but if you are look up using Iron X then a product called Cqaurtz ceramic coating. It actually resists dirt/brake dust build up and might help a lot!

No need to go straight to IronX.

Hrrmmm...My splash guard is a completely different shape then...
I have a hole in mine towards the rear of the engine, and there's a support that circles the Oil Drain Plug that I can jack the front up with. Very strange change in design.

A few minor things:
- Tightened up my glove box lock, broke the wires in the meantime. Got/getting some help from William.
- Installed the first aid kit bracket for the under seat kit
- I was going to install an AUX jack just for extra connectivity but I realized that that port is being used by my Dice.
- South Bay BMW had sent me a coupon for $25 of accessories so I bought these and put the M caps on:

Nope, nothing wrong with your ground, just a known issue with the aux-in port on our radios. The solution is to solder up a little circuit (a resistor & a capacitor, IIRC) in your DIY aux cable; the OEM aux cable has this circuit built-in. Search for DIY aux-in & you should find the info & circuit diagram.

Pretty much, the xi's have a different front frame brace so theirs is different with an actual center jack pad and regular e46 99-01 have the circle type front jack point. 02+ have that oval bit that crushes if you try to jack from it

Would a piece of wood that is correct oval shape seated inside the oval be acceptable as jacking pad so as not to crush the oval ring? Or is the brace even strong enough as a jacking point?

It would certainly help I bet. I've just used a ~8" strip of 2x4 (laying around) laterally across that area when jacking from there to distribute the load.

Recently I mentioned that the auto body shop, Jim and Jacks, in El Segundo, CA, replaced my rocker panel with a standard 330 one instead of a ZHP one. As I said, it's been almost 2 years and no one noticed. I brought this to their attention, and they showed me that they ordered with the VIN #, so it must have been send wrong by mistake. I bought a new panel, and they painted and re-installed it for free, and gave me the old one back. They guy wouldn't even take a tip. I'm going to post this in the review section too, but now Ness is whole again! Very happy with their service and work.

When I purchased my ZHP, it was pre-wired for IPOD by PO. The connector is in the glove compartment. It looks like a professional install. I know it works. I plugged it once and a song came out. But I do not know how is it hooked up. I could not control song selection or how to set up for use. Would this manual be a good start on how to use the IPOD?

^This. You'll need to know a bit more about what's actually behind the glove box. There are several options that provide iPod connectivity but I only know about the DICE unit. I'm not certain but believe the connector on the iPod side might have a logo on it that would help identifying the unit it goes to.

As an FYI, many kits have a way to either control from the Ipod or from the head unit. As for my Dice, if the Ipod is in "lock" position, the head unit controls the playlists, etc. If it's in unlock, I control the selection from the Ipod itself.

I will try to see if the connector has any logo markings. If nothing, then I have remove the glove box? (How do I remove the glove box? Any link?) The HU is a standard stock like everyone else....All I know is that the Ipod connector wiring was run through a rubber grommet and out to the glove box. Looks very professional. I got you since it is hollow aluminum and looks flimsy. However, what is the purpose of the cross brace if not for a specific jacking point and for suspension and engine support?

My assumption is that the earlier E46s with the explicit jack point & our later E46s all can be jacked the same way (i.e. same solid cross brace point), ours just has that annoying aluminum cover in the way instead of a nice rubber jack pad like the earlier ones.

I'd say that if the old & new E46s use the same P/N for that cross brace, then there shouldn't be a problem (assuming that's where the old jack pad attaches . . . ).

I'd assume the brace provides some torsional/translational rigidity to the unibody. Based on the materials thickness of said materials that I know the part is made out of, I'm not putting a jack under it.
The degree of uncertainty and confusion about proper jacking techniques for the E46 is pretty remarkable. I'm not pointing fingers, I'm definitely in the 'confused' camp myself.
I put her on ramps, then jack from the "frame" rail behind the control arm bushing mounting bolts, and set her down on jackstands underneath the factory side jack points. Between the two jackstands, two ramps, etc....I feel safe under the car and am confident that I'm using secure points......but there are better ways to do it for sure. What I particularly don't like about my method is the angle (left to right) put on the car when one side is on the jackstand and one side is still on the ramp. Too much movement for my taste. You could remedy this with two jacks...this is definitely in the plan but I need to save up for it.

I use a set of these to lift the front off of the Rhino ramps, works great. I also modified the tops of them so they fit inside of the jack points so there is less chance of anything bad happening. That square silver piece you see is a ratchet type lock system so they can't come down even if the jack portion failed.

Presently, I would use the two jacking points (rubber blocks) with 2 X 4 and slide my jack stands under the rails. One side at a time. To my understanding, the rubber jacking points have a designated block to be used with the hollow rubber points. There is a specific terminology for those mounting blocks.

Actually, at least with my Rhino brand ramps, you have to face one of them "backwards" because it's a close fit between clearing the bottom of the ramp and lining up with the jack point. Not a big deal though, it's still easy to pump and get to the release valve. I imagine if you trimmed a hair off the edge of the ramp it would probably clear it ok.

Thanks to someone who pointed out that Dice has a input for an aux cable, I checked mine out and it does. So I set that up and figured out how to toggle between Ipod and aux. I also moved the Dice from my glove box to behind it, so no extra hands can swipe it. So now I can play my music via ipod or my phone (or other mp3 player), etc through the car too.
I never really missed that capability until a friend had some songs on his phone he wanted to play and I didn't have a way to do it, until now.

Never been an issue for me because every time I've needed to remove the front wheels I either needed to get under the car or I also needed to remove the rears. Just something to consider.
Roger. Understood. Good info.

Today I kicked off my pre-100,000-mile refresh project with a Performance intake from BMWPartsSource.com (http://bmwpartssource.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=976248&siteid=216042&catalogid=8760) for $300.xx shipped!
The rest of the plan is to refresh the coolant system (i.e. exp. tank, water pump, t-stat, hoses), VANOS seals (no rattle kit as I haven't developed that problem), VCG, spark plugs, diff. fluid, & fuel filter.
EDIT: Looks like BMWPartsSource wasn't aware they had the intake still listed (at least at that price); they pulled it from the section I found it, & returned the price to $730 in the E46 section. They haven't updated me on what they're doing with my order yet . . .

I've been debating getting a set of these, probably in black. For another $20 you could get ZHP engraved on the deadpedal.
http://bmwpedals.com/products/e46.html
http://bmwpedals.com/images/525_se46mtblk.jpg
So I heard back from these guys on getting a set with "ZHP" engraved on the deadpedal. Turns out that the $134.99 price is only for the "///M" engraved ones. For a personalized engraving it's another $50 on top of that, so $184.99 total. They do up a design and e mail you a PDF for your approval first.
I'm still debating, not sure I want to spend that much so I might just get the ///M set instead.

01-12-2012, 10:31 AM
That's gettin' pretty pricey, especially when the set itself looks good. You'd probably have to look real hard to see the "ZHP" anyway. Nice idea but a tough call at that price.

Haven't even heard of those hoses; I just went with the OEM kit. Actually, I contemplated not doing the hoses at all, since Mike Miller's Old-School Maintenance Schedule recommends coolant & fuel hoses at 150,000-mile intervals.

If they had it at that price when you ordered it aren't they legally obligated to sell it to you at that advertised price?

They are not legally obligated to sell it at that price. To understand why that is so, you need to understand contracts.
An advertised price -- by a business -- is nothing more than an invitation to have you submit an offer to them. You submitted an offer for a lower price. They decided not to accept your offer. Therefore, there is no contract. They can turn around and cancel your order or see if you'd like to pay the higher price.
All of that said, many businesses will honor the misquoted price. Understand, though, that they are not obligated to do it.

Results:
Max 92dB @ around 5 feet
Max 88dB @ 50ft while accelerating, approx ~5-5.5k RPM at point of measure for (3) passes
Max 81dB @ 50ft while stationary, revving up to redline
Very happy with these numbers. That means the sound nazi's at Lime Rock should have nothing to biotch about. :)

Primer
Clearcoat

Yeah, I'm a little weird like that. Armrest delete in the E46 and what I'm thinking in the 2002 would actually be about the same height off the floor, basically I want it to be 2 flat things around the e-brake.

I find myself driving with the armrest up a lot, especially since the SSK. I get a much more comfortable arm position for shifting with it up....but that's on the commute which makes for a lot of rowing. On trips its down and I'm on it.
