zip tied the wires to my tail lights together so they would work ( BMW told me my car is not part of the recall) the ziptie pressed them together just right but i guess i have to look into the DIY fix for the tail light issue.

I put a new set of projector's in my passenger side yesterday. Driver's side parts will be here next week. Today, if the mail works out right, I will be adding a new BMW performance knob to replace my tattered ZHP one.

On Wednesday, I dropped my car off at a shop to have the valve cover gasket done, new spark plugs put in, and the VANOS rebuilt with Beisan Systems anti-rattle kit and new seals. They also checked my fluids, put in a quarter tank of gas and plugged my right rear tire at no extra charge.
Pretty good shop. The price was right, too. 20% off. So it was only a little bit extra than if I did it myself (minus the cost of beer, headaches and frustration).

if you don't mind me asking, what was the bottom line on all that work?
llll1l1ll
12-24-2011, 09:36 AM
Sure: it's about 600 in parts and labor for the seals and VCG. The spark plugs were an additional 74 bucks. So about 340 in labor and the rest in parts. With the discount it came to below 600 bucks.
Edit: This is in NC, by the way. I would imagine MD would be more expensive. TX may be about the same price.

While it wasn't today, it was earlier this week. I installed a set of urethane control arm bushings that I got from BMP Design(.com). It was WAY easier than I expected.
Oddly, the bushings that I received looked a lot more like the MTC bushings than the bmpdesign bushings. Either way, I was just happy to have the bushings, the OEM ones were entirely shot :(
Needless to say, I'm extremely happy with the new bushings. The ride is extremely tight now and I don't have all of the problems that come from having blown OEM bushings (it was REALLY bad). Installation only took 2 hours at the most. I could have done it in less time but it was my first time under the car messing with the suspension. The only problem is that as some people have reported, the MTC/BMP bushings do squeak sometimes. I'm going to take them off again and give them some grease to hopefully quiet them up. If that doesn't work or I have other problems, I'm going to get a set of the Merle (sp?) bushings.
The car is soooo tight and smooth right now though, I love it! :)

Got my son tinkering on his Xmas present ('01 325ci). He scrubbed the carpets, stole his mom's old black carpeted mats (old is relative, only 25k miles on them), rotated his tires (found a nail, will fix this week), corrected tire pressures, checked the oil, changed his rear license plate bracket, and all new license plate screws (to meet Eli's standards). Next he somehow talked his mom into moving her Denali out of the garage and getting his coupe in next to her ZHP, not sure how that worked.
The bigger movement was the wife in the garage using the shop vac to clean her car up so her new Xmas carpeted floor mats (for a conv vs. a coupe) could be installed. She has never, ever cleaned her '07 Denali, this cleaning of her ZHP is starting to become routine, she's going to steal some of my car care duties.

Sunshade woes. Boy oh boy oh boy. I took a look at the damage today. Here's what I need to do:
1. Brand-new sunshade. One of the metal parts that hold the plastic clips on is completely broken. Therefore, it's totally impossible for me to properly repair the sunshade. New sunshade: $100
2. The sunshade driver is completely jammed in the rear of the sunshade. When the small metal piece rolls over it to move the driver back to the front, it simply just catches and then rolls over the driver. Headliner needs to come off. I'm glad I have the sunshade repair kit with the updated driver. I hope I can get the driver off.
I'm gonna tackle this one tomorrow. I'm really terrified to take off the headliner - there are so many pieces that are coming out of my car. I just don't want to mess it up. I'd love to take it to a professional but the labor will kill me.
Jeeze, BMW really dropped the ball on this sunshade. I wish they made a recall for it.
Wish me luck!

Somehow by the grace of god I avoided what would have been one hell of a collision. I was approaching a green light that was at the intersection of the street I was traveling on and a one way that is SUPPOSED to be going from my left side to me right. As I was going about 20-25, I'm directly under my green light and before I knew it, a car went FLYING by me going the wrong way. After I saw them and by the time I hit my brakes, the car has already came and went. I didn't even remember at first that it was a one way..and after it I was on the other side of the intersection, I cocked my head back to see what color their light was. Then I remembered that it was a one way. That's when I got mad.. but then thankful that I wasn't 1 second quicker because If I was, my day would be drastically different.

I installed the Bav Auto all-weather floor mats yesterday and love how the "checkerboard" pattern works with the black cube trim.
She also ordered the Khoalty black grills, but unfortunately, they were out of stock of the piano black and sent the matte black instead. We're shipping those back for replacement today, so hopefully I'll have new grills in the next couple of weeks.

I have mixed feelings on Arqray lips. I think they look good on pre-facelifts, but take a way a certain level of aggressiveness that the M-tech II originally had without the lip. It seems like it's adding more 'class' to something thats agressive.

Here's a strange one. Feb 2010 cracked my right (passenger) side skirt (or rocker panel if you prefer), had a collision repair place swap it out on my dime. Earlier this month, someone looks at my car and says "why do you not have an Mtech II side skirt"? They replaced it with a standard 330 side skirt. It went unnoticed for almost 2 years! So, today, I ordered the proper side skirt. Funny how something like that could go unnoticed all this time. The difference is subtle though.

Its a little less serious when you consider a full fill is 15 quarts, but holy cow. I have never seen it that low, no leaks, and it doesn't really burn oil either. I'm starting to wonder if majorly underfilled on the last change?:facepalm:facepalm

Oil changes for both my domestics yesterday/today too. Found cracked motor mounts on the Denali, parts are fairly cheap but front diff has to be removed and engine has to be lifted, 9.7 hrs book time - ouch! Called the dealer to see if there might be a service bulletin/recall, my 75K mile vehicle exceeded its 5 yr/100k power train warranty 13 days ago. Due to my frequent buying history, dealer is trying to get my warranty extended by one month to cover it, otherwise oh crap.

Oh, the results! And... it's noticeably better but still not as good as the right/passenger headlight. Perhaps 20% more light overall, and 40% more light on the ground 10 feet in front of the car on the left. Here are before (foil) and after (foil) photos with the left projector only--right side blocked with a sheet of cardboard. Both photos done with the old Phillips D2S bulb. In the garage pix (white garage door at ~20 feet) the left light looks about 20% brighter to me. In the wall pic (gold stucco wall at ~50 feet), left light still looks dim but "after foil" pic shows more light on the ground.
Garage door at ~20', before and after (right projector blocked)

2938
Stucco wall at ~40', before and after (right projector blocked); more light on ground

I'm beginning to wonder if my right headlight is an AL. The right cover says AL (left cover says ZKW). The right projector lens has a horizontal line in it; the left projector lens does not have any line. The right was so much brighter than the left before the aluminum foil hack. This weekend I want to remove the right headlight assembly to see if it has a burnt bowl or not.

Several people who've driven or driven in my car said it is noticeably faster than non-sharked ZHP, including Bruce who's driven a bunch of them and test drove mine before I bought it (he was the first to bring to my attention that there was a little something extra to my ride).

How was the install for the aux cable I have one and have been wanting to put it in
~Steve
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It did test my patience, but overall it was very simple. Use Kager's DIY and I'll add a couple tips.
Tips:
1. When disconnecting the harness use a flat head or plastic tool to pry the connection up. Once you think you've got it up pry further :) if you look closely to the photo below (slight L shape grooves) you'll see that the first pry gets it up but it needs to go even further to release.
2. Looking from the back the grey connector (aux cable) goes on the right and the old black connector goes on the left.
3. When putting the blue clip back in make sure the grey and black connectors are all the way through the harness so that the blue clip doesn't allow them to come back out of the back of the harness - it'll make sense when you do it.
4. Use the zip ties to roll up the extra cable that you'll hide below the head unit. This is extremely important to try and make the length of the cable thy you're going to use just long enough so that everything goes back together without pinching.
5. I used a 1/4" drill bit for the hole in the sunglasses holder. The hardest part was getting the nut on the aux cable to secure it to the sunglasses holder. I was able to feed it through the back and put the nut on top. Then I spun the cable from the back to get the nut started. Hopefully someone has a better option because this was a PITA. Please test the cable before putting it back together to save yourself some trouble :)
That's about it. Kager's guide is great.

Just a heads up....for cars with navigation the diy is different. Instead of pulling the nav unit completely out and pulling out the plugs in the rear, all you need to do to retrofit AUX input is take out the center vents on top and on the left side of the nav/radio unit you will see a wiring loom. There is a plug lightly wrapped to the loom that is the AUX input wire. All you need to do is separate the plug to attach to your AUX input kit, then route the wire to the glove compartment or wherever you desire and you are set.

You have to bake facelift coupe/vert lights because they are sealed with a glue, the bake heats up the glue so you can pull them apart.

Focus, young Wolfenator, focus! Or maybe Macro mode then focus.
Here are my plugs two weeks ago, with somewhere between 35,000-65,000 miles on them or somewhere in between. All I know is PO changed them sometime between 90,000 and 120,000 miles. They probably have about 55,000 miles on them, and I'm thinking the dark fouling is oil from when my VCG was leaking.
I'm trying to decide if I should replace my plugs now or wait until summer, and wondering if fresh plugs might give me a little more power. One of those momentous $54 questions.

Yes, now. NGK BKR6EQUP or the NGK Iridium (don't remember p/n). The iridiums are only like $5 a plug opposed to the $9 for the platinums. Skip the Bosch

Thanks, Hermes and Marcus! So it's a $53 question from AutoHausAZ but only a $47 question if I buy from the Amazon ZHP Mafia store! And free shipping to boot. Let me just verify Amazon doesn't charge sales tax for shipments to California. That's the link that gives the family its cut, right? The link has some kind of "zhpcom" tag in it.
Hermes, aren't Iridium spark plugs normally more expensive than equivalent platinum plugs? The NGK Iridiums I saw there are cheaper but seem to have one ground prong vs. 4 for the NGK platinums.
Hermes
01-01-2012, 11:11 PM
Yeah, they only have 1 ground. Not a problem, the plugs supposedly work much better than the platinums. I tried to find iridiums with 4 prongs and as far as i can tell they don't exist

Is that reversible in case you don't like it? It's an awfully expensive mistake if you end up not liking it.

I would keep paint thinner around and wipe off right away if I don't like it. I'm just tired of how dark my interior is. Because the paint is transparent I'm thinking the cube would just have a red shine to it and not actually be red

Hey Y'all - haven't been on the interweb a lot lately. Hope all is well in the ZHP world. Mine is doing well - in the last two weeks it got:
- new cooling system (minus water pump which was already done): hoses, fluid, radiator, therm, housing, exp. tank, etc...
- tail light recall performed
- lower intake boot replaced (cracking)
Car is running like an absolute champ at 87k miles. It's still getting 25-6 mpg on the winter gas (is winter gas a myth?).
One problem: found moisture/condensation in my headlight housing. Apparently there is nothing I can do about this? It took a week to go away, but I'm sure it'll be back next time it rains and I'm on the highway.
Happy 2012! I hope I get to hang out with my ZHP brothers and sisters sometime this year.

As a 'sledgehammer' approach to headlight condensation you can pack them with a handful of desiccant bags. Hit up your local walmart and check camera cases or shoes, grab a few bags of desiccant and throw them in. Did this on my HID retrofitted E36 projectors with success.
But, i'd check that the headlight and associated seals and boots are in correct order before doing that.

Got my oil changed today. Discovered the following problems:
1. Small leak from my radiator. My low coolant light has not even come on, so apparently this is an extremely small leak. I haven't even noticed my coolant fall lower, either.
2. Leaking rear shocks :( Not happy about this one. I haven't noticed any change in handling or ride quality, so I'm not worried. I'll deal with this one when it finally becomes a problem. I can get cheap ZHP shocks, and they are supposedly very easy to replace according to the DIY.
3. Time for new tires. They are very worn. Apparently my rear-left tire does not hold air anymore, but I didn't notice since it's a run-flat :p I just recently checked the air, too.
4. Alignment. Reallllly need this one.
5. FCABs.
Today was a wake-up call for me to start working on issues that actually matter now, and not issues that may crop up potentially. I feel dumb for not looking at the more major issues. Money is very tight and I need to make sure I have some to work on my car and also have a good social life. This is a good lesson in budgeting.

Rear shocks are super easy. I did them solo in an hour.
FCAB were easy too. I did them in 1.5 hrs. Not too expensive either. Borrow a gear puller or a 3 jaw puller from someone.
Tires and alignment...hmm, well, you're gonna spend money on those. No way around that.
If you want help, bring it to Asheville and we can knock out most of these before lunch!

As Mtnman said, the FCABs and rear shocks can be DIY if you have some basic tools. Also, you can do your radiator fairly easily as well.
For tires, non run-flats are cheaper, and you should have a spare in your trunk.

Installed UUC DSSR last night. Took many hours of sweating and cussing, not so much to install the DSSR itself, but to change the selector rod joint/knuckle. Getting the old one off was hard; getting the new one on was harder. Also replaced the white circular shifter ball bearing that sits in the carrier. If I had only done the DSSR, it would have been pretty easy. Removing the "bi*ch" clips that hold the front of the carrier was easy, once the exhaust and transmission support were out of the way. I only removed the carrier to get better access to the selector rod knuckle; it's not necessary just for the DSSR. It was my first time dropping the exhaust.
UUC was helpful in answering my questions by phone, both before and after purchase. They did warn me that replacing part #12 would be difficult, and it was! Shifts are definitely smoother now, but it didn't reduce shift lever play very much, which is quite disappointing. The old knuckle was missing the little yellow sponge (part 14), but even though the new knuckle has a sponge (which made it really hard to get on), that didn't seem to make much difference either. I think most of the remaining free play is in the transmission itself. A little might be in the shift lever pivot ball, which definitely had some worn spots on it, or in the carrier (#1), which can rock back and forth just a tiny bit despite having the two-pronged front. I wonder if replacing both oval bushings (#2) would fix that.... but in any case I have no interest in dropping the exhaust again for at least another 6 months. Someday if I get a new exhaust or do a SSK, I can replace those oval carrier bushings.
I was afraid of a jack stand failing (or an earthquake) so spent most of the time with a jack under one end of the car in addition to the jackstands, but I temporarily diverted both jacks to supporting the exhaust during removal and reinstallation, and used the small jack to support and lower the transmission while the tranny brace was out.
On this diagram I replaced parts 7, 9, 10 (x4), 11 (x2), 12 (including 13 and 14), and 15. Replacing parts 7 and 9 was only moderately difficult, but replacing 12 was so, so hard, partly because I didn't remove the guibo so had to reach around it and the driveshaft a lot.

I'll be glad to take you up on that offer when it's time to do shocks :). I'm gonna do FCABs before tires so my alignment is worthwhile since I'm doing both at the same time. I should be getting some PZero Neros in about a week
