View Full Version : MFactory LSD Group Buy

Stigissimo

Hey everybody,

Myself and another member over in e46fanatics (tjas0n) are starting a group buy for MFactory LSD units. As far as I know, group buy price will be $800 for the LSD unit if we can get 10 buyers, of which we have 3 so far.

I heard rumblings that there are some on this forum looking for a group buy, so if you’re looking for some lockey slidey rear end action now’s your shot.

If you’d like to be part of the group buy, please PM me and I will send you tjas0n 's email. Please send him the following info: year, model, transmission type, diff ratio (if you can, especially important if you’re swapping into a different diff than your OE one), and LSD type you’re looking for (metal plate vs helical).

Carry on!

$799 is an excellent price! I was planning to install LSD on my car. But, I am off the hook since my new touring has LSD installed.
Good luck with the group buy!

Any idea what would be the discount for the full 'pumpkin rebuild' option? I pledged my interest in this thread (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?15863-MFactory-Helical-LSD-s-Lifetime-Warranty-30-Day-Money-Back-Guarantee!&p=577640#post577640) where johnrando was recently asking about a group buy.

I'm interested for the $799 price. Maybe I should call MFactory directly to see if they'll allow me to apply the discount to a pumpkin rebuild... I'm thinking it would be cheaper than having my local shop install the LSD at $115/hr.

Answered your PM! Let me know what MFactory says and I'll send your info over to the e46f member running the group buy.

I spoke to David (? I think.) He said he hadn't heard anything about a group buy for a while.

That said, he said he couldn't identify a price for the full pumpkin rebuild; it would depend on the terms of the group buy.

Interesting - member tjas0n over on e46fanatics is doing the reaching out, maybe he's just gathering names and hasn't reached out yet, or perhaps he's dealing with a different person over there?

here's the link to the thread:

I'm also going to modify the original post - PM me if you're interested, and I'll send you tjas0n's email to get in touch directly with him since he's running the group buy.

I don’t know yet as it depends if we can get enough people. I personally am hoping it goes through sooner rather than later so I can take advantage of an LSD in the winter months

i've got a spare 3.07 and 3.46 here if anyone is needing one; you'd need to swap the flanges from your diff over once completed though (about 20min job).

That 20min doesn’t include the input flange, does it? Everything I’ve seen suggests that’s a bitch-and-a-half to.

yeah, it does - it's not bad at all. i did it on my workbench. you need a 30mm socket, if i remember correctly. the output flanges are 2-3min per side.

Why are the flanges different?

Why are the flanges different?

Because BMW hates us.

330 input flanges are different from all the other input flanges. ZHP output flanges are different from all the other E46 output flanges.

I thought auto ZHPs were 3.64, and regular AT330s have a 3.38. On a 3.38 you still have to swap output flanges, just not the input.

Maybe a stupid question, but can you move all the innards from a non-330 into the 330 pumpkin as a workaround for the input flange swap?

Well I guess I have a flaw in my own plan! I'll have to swap output flanges then - luckily they just pop right over.

As far as swapping "innards," that would be more difficult than swapping the flange. I believe you'd have to swap the pinion in order to change the ratio, which I can only imagine is more involved than just changing the pinion flange. Such a swap would also require you to really know what you're doing when checking (and potentially having to change) preload/backlash post-swap.

Touché. Really I just need to decide if I want to dump $1k into a track mod for a car I don’t plan on tracking that much longer (I’m never going club race this car, which is ultimately what I want to do).

i never got to the track with the Touring, but i enjoyed the hell out of the LSD. and the 335i, making another 66hp and 90ft-lbs of torque, needs one even worse.... i can spin the summer tires through 2nd gear, the winters through 3rd gear. wheelspin in 3rd gear is a little unnerving.

nope. $800 is a deal.

the 2008-2011 335's have welded ring gears, and as such need machining in order to bolt to a LSD carrier. the result is about a ~$2500 price tag. so, yeah - $800? cheap.

Yeah, definitely cheap, even at half that price. I think the Diffsonline diff I have in my ZHP cost about $2500+ when it was new...

So I've got a 6-speed zhp. I don't plan on tracking the car but i wouldn't rule it out in the future. I do want to own it for a long time and that means having something that will get through winters. I really can't complain about the final drive. I wouldn't really know how i'd want to improve upon it. I always thought 1-4 were great, I don't need 5th, and 6th is great lol.

So i guess what I'm looking for would be winter driving improvements, maybe something that might get used on a track and maybe improved gas mileage? What are some of the other things that people look to get out of an LSD?

If you care about gas mileage, I would stick with the 3.07, or maybe bump to a 3.23 for a minor performance bump without losing much (if any) mpg's. Just being an LSD will help with everything else you're looking for.

I don't know if they're still doing it, but the first post in the other LSD thread by MFactory (here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?15863-MFactory-Helical-LSD-s-Lifetime-Warranty-30-Day-Money-Back-Guarantee!)) said they charge an additional $450 to install the new LSD in a pumpkin they have in stock, then they add a $500 core charge which is refunded when you send them your old pumpkin. This is the route I'm planning to take... I just hope they're still in the $450 range.

Honestly that’s a good deal. I watched a couple videos and it just seems like a lot of work. Not necessarily difficult, but a solid day’s work. And if you don’t have things like a vise on a workbench you’d have to get creative. Plus they’d presumably double check things like the backlash, etc.

hey, i just removed one from the 2005 ZHP parts car i just dismantled, and it came off in 2min.... you just need to know the tricks... :)

1. there are two 'slots' in the flange on the end of the driveshaft, where it meets the diff - spray liberally with PB Blaster and wait 15min

2. grab a chisel and a 5lb sledge

3. insert chisel into one of the slots - hammer in and pry back at the same time; alternate slots

The one thing to watch out for on the pumpkin is making sure the new one has the right input flange. The output flanges are easy to change (don’t forget the C-clips), but changing the input flange is to be avoided (at least by the uninitiated) as it’s more involved and, I hear, somewhat tricky.

I messaged tJas0n 2-3 days ago asking for an update - I haven't heard back yet. The most recent update was on 1/14/19: "Mfactory is checking stock, and we currently have 8 people in the group buy."

I actually will be dropping out of the group buy (I've decided I'm going to pursue another project this spring * cough S54), BUT I am still keeping track of progress/updating as best I can as I feel I have a responsibility to you all since I started this thread.
