OK...you can't use option 3, because you don't have the performance intake....or do you?
I'm saying go with oem Mann...if you're not going to go with an agressive intake.

OEM - Mann.
I've also used Mahle stuff on my e30 - also quality.

I am kind of in the same boat. I've been looking at getting a lifetime K&N or aFe instead of the $15 oem replacement. Any real bonus for shelling out some extra moolah for the "upgrade?"

Would also love an answer to this question. Is there any performance gain over the stock air filter going to a K$N? On a realted note, ECS has the bmw performance intake for $270 or so. That a good deal?

Yes....That's an insane deal. Like almost $800.00 off oem value.

Any HP gains? I know the Afe says 20hp (which is hard to believe) but should one expect similar things from the performance intake?

Dynoed at 6.5 HP over stock airbox.

I find the gains to be minimal. Even if it's 6HP, you aren't going to notice much on a car that's 235HP. I got mine for the looks. Cant argue with the looks. The replacement filters are about $50.

I just need the exhaust.
I am happy with Shark, and AFE. Been thinking about dyno...but also thinking about waiting until vanos rebuild and exhaust is done.

I had the aFe. It sounded better than the BMW Performance intake that I have. But I'm trying to go for the OEM BMW look on the car. I had no complaints with aFe.

THIS (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=768715) thread over on e46F is a pretty good resource to start when looking for performance upgrades.
The link below is specifically a ZHP with RE pulleys, AA exhaust, and aFe CAI:
