2001.5 AUDI S4 Avant

Introducing my AUDI S4 Avant!

Back in June I was talking to Botond about a few maintenance items and mods I was going to do for my ZHP and my friend Chris at that time was trying to sell off his AUDI S4's (yes he had a pair of them both in Silver) and I wasn't paying too much attention to them... well a few weeks ago things unexpectedly went into motion as Chris sold his B5 S4 sedan and had his Avant still for sale... one thing led to another and I was offered a killer price by Chris for his Avant that I could not refuse so I accepted...

I was also given a unique opportunity to buy back my BMW Performance carbon fiber strut bar from him so the car gods must have been smiling upon me that morning... I then realized 4 cars was just too much for what I wanted right now so I decided to sell my ZHP.

I had one person in mind to sell my ZHP to (Botond) and I gave him a killer deal he couldn't say no to either (keeping the car gods happy)... so all in all it ended up being a wash and I found myself selling off my ZHP and owning a 2001.5 AUDI B5 S4 Avant. :drevil All of this transpired on a Thursday morning while at work within an hour (texting to Botond and Chris)... it happened that fast...

I know there have been a few wondering which way I was going to go regarding my next car project but I decided on getting an Avant because of how easy it would be to transport parts for either of my cars and for that "sleeper" effect this car has so much potential for... My Avant already has the RS4 turbos and stage 2 tune producing 380 awhp so this makes my M3 the slowest car in my stable...

Make no mistake, this car is not in pristine shape... in fact she's far from it and I think this is why my friend literally "gave me" this car so I could rescue her... and this is exactly what I intend to do. Her paint is not in the best shape however I have a friend who own's a body shop and have already started working out details to get her looking right :)

Maintenance-wise she also needs some work, she's due for a timing belt/water pump change and I have already started ordering items that will be needed to do the maintenance... she also has a cracked windshield my friend failed to tell me about but no worries... I will just get this changed out. Also the car has dark (probably 20%) window tint which I have already started removing because the state in which I live in does not allow for aftermarket window tint.... how g a y .... the battery on the car is dead as well but has already been replaced by me today... oh and the car is not up to my standards of cleanliness but I have a steam cleaner I can use to get the carpets and interior cleaned. Also noted the headliner will need to get taken out and brought over to an upholstery shop to have it reconditioned. I'm sure I will find more items to fix ;)

Anyway I'm setting up this project thread as a way to keep track of what maintenance and mods (yes, I can never stay away from modding any car I own) I will be doing while this car is under my ownership... ;)

I like to say she's a diamond in the rough with a potential to be a beautiful ride....this is how she currently looks and I know when I get her sorted out I will appreciate looking at her "before" pictures to see how far along she will come along... just like my M3 it will be an amazing journey :thumbsup

Had to have a shot of my M3 in the foreground for my introductory picture of my S4 Avant :)

My "trifecta garage" has started.... all three cars are some shade of silver... this should be interesting since all three cars have a unique character all their own...

EDIT: Looks like I'm replacing my Silver S4 Avant for a California Nogaro Blue/Nogaro Blue S4 Avant... I have always wanted to have a blue car - I will now have one ;)

No room at my garage to have 4 cars so I will have to let my Silver S4 Avant go to someone who is looking for a project car to restore/build...

Charrie has got his work cut out for him, but let's just say that'll make it a lot more satisfying when everything's been remedied.
I know he doesn't mess around, so I'm curious where this ends up going. I know he won't disappoint. :)

I love this B5 S4 Avant because only 1500 of these were produced in this model year. I also love the old school look of this car and how easily it can be modded [emoji41]

Looking at this picture should give you an idea as to how dirty my engine bay looks. In time I will correct this and have an engine bay as clean as the engine bay in my M3[emoji57]

It will take some time to sort out but this is why I took on this project. Part of the fun in rescuing any worthwhile car....

Definitely my favorite part. Something about finding a car with potential that most would pass on and transforming it into a head turner. My ZHP was not always as fresh as it is now when I got it...and all I did was show it some love and elbow grease. Still have a-lot of restoring to go

Oh wow Charlie! Sorry to see the ZHP go, (and what a way to keep it in the family!) but always loved this generation of A/S4.

Watch out for that Tiptronic, really the weak point in that drivetrain.

I feel bad I was complaining to you about upcoming maintenance for me....

Looking forward to watching this one evolve.

No manual conversion?

Tempting but no, right now I’m keeping the new whip tiptronic. I have been wanting a tip for daily driving duties especially where I’m at with all the summer tourist traffic coming to/from Newport. Sometimes its a royal PITA....however with that said who knows?

Not many who really know me expected me to pick up an Avant for a daily driver so we’ll see where this project leads [emoji6]

Been looking at summer wheels for my Avant and decided on getting a set of BBS LM wheels...

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1944/44852111081_189ca24fbb_o.jpg

BBS LM 18x8.5 5x112 ET40 Diamond Silver | Diamond Cut Rim LM183DSPK

Summer setup using Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires:
Front 225/40-18 on 7.5 inch ET48 wheels
Rear 255/35-18 on 8.5 inch ET40 wheels

Since winter will be here soon enough... I will start sourcing these wheels probably sometime after Christmas...then by early spring I can get some Michelins on them.

Just to give you an idea the look I’m going for but not quite as low...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180923/a5d44c74cd16f4784bddb4258613b290.png
I still have my red center caps from my ZHP's BBS wheels so I will simply use the red center caps when I get my LMs....assuming they will fit. ;)

Always good to have a vision to work towards whenever taking on a project like this. It will take a lot of time, patience and money to get this car to where I see it... but in the end it will be well worth it and since it is a 200k mile car, I am not worried about resale value and look forward to having fun rebuilding her ;) Besides, I don't pick my cars solely on where I can save money... if it were about money then I would be driving a Prius :p

I’ll eventually be upgrading both Audis with this steering wheel and RNS-E head unit. Looks just right in my opinion...

Ohh, I like the boost and AFR gauges in that pic!
I want the boost gauge on the center vent. I have a P3 right now in the the left side vent but it's too far out of my line of sight

This has been a memorable and exhausting trip but to me it was well worth making the effort to buy this rare gem! I have not made a cross country trip (east coast to west coast) since 2003 so it has been a long time. Botond had expressed his desire to help me bring my car and also told me that it was a bucket list item for him to make a long distance road trip of this nature. I can say it was an adventure that I will look back on and laugh at some things ("69" comes to mind...), share in disappointment with others but hope there will be another opportunity for another road trip in the future... Botond and I did the complete trip in 3 legs.

The first leg was from Sacramento, CA to Las Vegas to Gary's home. Even though it was only one day... it was nice to spend some time with someone I got to know thru this form and have become very good friends with. I always look forward to spending time with Gary and his awesome family.

The second leg started from Las Vegas and I took Botond to the Hoover Dam so he could check out how big this dam was and the work that went into building this marvel of technology... then we headed off to Arizona to Meteor Crater. I could not believe that it was 40 degrees outside and I have to admit that both Botond and I looked silly wearing shorts and T-shirts while at the site when everyone else were wearing warmer clothing...anyway after checking out Meteor Crater Botond and I headed off to Armillo, TX where we decided to get a hotel room and stay for the evening due to intense strong storms that we have encountered in Arizona/New Mexico/and Texas. I have seen hard niagra falls rain but never experienced a storm so intense that it spanned across a few states... The lightening storm created was so intense that it streaked all across the sky...

The last leg started on Monday and ended tonight when I got home. Botond and I decided to drive straight home to save time. Unfortunately truck drivers had a different agenda and at times it was challenging to get around them as they occasionally blocked traffic on the highway... must be a game they like to play to mess with people driving sports cars... There were a few dump trucks on the road as well and as you could imagine from my Porsche mishap, I was extra cautious when approaching them... to a point I'm sure Botond thought I was a Royal Pain in the Ass... anyway we managed to get past them and get my newly acquired Audi home.

I was going to take the Audi out and get her washed but I'm so damned tired I decided to grab a much needed shower and go to sleep. I know I won't need anything to help me sleep tonight... I'm completely exhausted from the trip. Botond is driving home right now as I am typing this and I hope he will be okay for his trip home. He assured me that he will be but I know he's just as tired as I am...

My silver Audi S4 Avant now has a sister in the stable in a Nogaro Blue color ;) Yes, I need to update my sig pics...

Dealing with trucks or dump trucks was taxing on patience... stress build up but when we were thru, the stress immediately dropped and I could enjoy the trip again... seems like there are a lot more trucks on the roads these days...

Doing the timing belt/water pump service on my Audi this weekend since the previous owner did not remember when the last service was performed. Car has 166k on her so there are a few things I need to address to keep this rare Nogaro in tip top shape...

Breaking down
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/b43d52e622d408bf527bfd645d60b75a.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/6b7a48383cf638b9719fb65f8a66fb4a.jpg

AC cooler set aside for maintenance
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/f891c0dcd7377496a7d43e0f68f3b41f.jpg

Found out the last timing belt/water pump service was done at 119k.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/c396779bb7a28511ef3c17ad361e327b.jpg

Well, since I was already into this I decided to change everything out and zero the clock so to speak. It was also a good learning experience for me getting to know what is required for Audi maintenance...

All interference removed to expose the conti timing belt... note my Nogaro already has the metal thermostat housing!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/457e1cef178f53f5e3c99d6746c3643d.jpg

Cam lock tool, a necessary tool for setting your cam when replacing the timing belt...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/e8ce1c77b43753720379fd1f9880e4a5.jpg

Old timing belt removed...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/fbe72bddc6d3d5d11beb0baeeec0a3a7.jpg

Here are a few pictures of the old Conti timing belt. Not a single stress crack could be found. Belt easily had about another 40k miles of life left in her but I won’t be reusing this so off to the trash for this part...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/d409716a4d95116e76a760ff88370dde.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/38fe33f33cfc6f5db76851087fcfce50.jpg

Installed the new water pump and started cleaning the front part of the motor.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/4d4681e88ecda3f6bef381c8fe4007e4.jpg

With the new Gates Racing timing belt installed my friend and I are installing the tensioner pulley.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/08fac59ff22666907adf4a2630a154c3.jpg

Turned out the passenger exhaust cam was off by a tooth so we had to take off the belt and redo this step...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/07f6fdef73dfc2ecc243121c8428100c.jpg

This part is a pain but getting everything perfect has to be done here...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/61252acab540f003573c5eadd65b4d35.jpg

My friend and I ended up doing this 3X before it was finally done...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/6a7e1a17eb9eaa08ef0c23e98ad5a595.jpg

Car bit me this morning...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181111/6a5eee5081b37dccb347ca142aa6b945.jpg

All part of maintenance.... you can say that the car is now mine... there will be more done to my Nogaro Audi over the next few months...

Hey Charlie, looks like you had a nice and productive weekend. Nice job! I've heard about timing belts job on Audi's and they are definitely time consuming.

Also, that shop looks cool, a lot of interesting cars over there, which tells a lot.

Serg, you're absolutely correct. Doing the timing belt job for people like us is a time consuming job. Since we don't do this on a regular basis you want to plan this job out over a few days. This is something you do not want to rush thru...

I took two full days to get this job completed and learned a lot about my car both good and bad... there are a few more things I need to address before the car is 100% but keep in mind the car has 166k miles driven on her so she will require some more work to bring her back to perfection mechanically... the e-code headlights that are on the car are crap and will be sorted out with a brand new set of e-codes and Morimoto lighting. The problem with the existing e-codes is that there are broken tabs on both headlight assemblies that I did not catch and that's okay. I will just swap out the headlights and throw this set away...

The indy shop where I will be taking both Audi's to was the shop where I used to take my ZHP to so the head mechanic there remembered me and I showed him my new Audi. The guys at the shop all recognized the Nogaro S4 and I knew once I saw their reaction that my Audi will be in good hands... it is always nice to have a good feeling about any shop you take your car to for maintenance... lots more will be done for sure...

That's the hardest part as an enthusiast, finding a shop you can trust with your babies... there is a lot of stuff I can do myself on all our cars but sometimes I'd just rather have someone else fix it... I'm down to only two techs that I trust at Kristen's dealership where her labor rate is $30 an hr

That's pretty much how I feel any time I take any of my cars to any shop... once they mess up (depending on how bad they mess up) it may be the last time I take my car to that shop. Unfortunately you can't control how the person working on your car does his work... you can only hope they will be careful and treat your car as if it were their own...

it's not always the case though...

Where my Porsche is concerned that "issue" was given to me by a so-called trusted shop (not dealer in my case)... it goes to show you can't assume just because you have had good experiences from a particular shop to lower your guard... this is what I did. Even though I have a good vibe from the Audi indy shop, does not mean I will lower my guard... learned that the hard way with my Porsche...

ordered new euro headlight assemblies this evening to replace the broken ones I currently have...

Also sourced a Morimoto Bi-Xenon retrofit kit specifically for these headlight assemblies... going to wire them such that when high beams are engaged, I will have both the xenon and inner bulb light up

This weekend the Nogaro sled got the RNS-E upgrade and I now have full OEM GPS Navigation functionality integrated into a pre-CANBUS car.

Since my M3 and Porsche has OEM Navigation, I wanted my Nogaro sled to have it as well. Since completing this upgrade I have had a few people in the Audi S4 owner's group ask me how I did my retrofit... lots of reading was involved and some simple rewiring of the CANBUS wiring harness in order to get everything to work [emoji57]

I now have the face plate to work on then this project will be complete...

Serg,

There is a difference and it took me a few hundred miles to get accustomed to. The cruise control is on the headlight stalk on the left side of the steering wheel instead of on the steering wheel of BMWs.

Turning on the headlights require movement of the stalk instead of a rotary switch like what I have on my M3 and Porsche...

A few minor differences but not too hard to adjust to. Window switches are on the door arm rest just like the E9x series BMW.

As for complaints....it would have been better to have the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel just like you see on E46 BMWs and have a rotary switch on the left side on the dash for headlights and fogs. That’s pretty much my complaints... nothing too major regarding Audi cabin and control layout. Overall, this Audi is a lot of fun to drive and man do I have awesome viewing in all directions. No blind spots when driving this car[emoji1417]

Wait till you see this car in person my friend!!

Finished rebuilding both headlight assemblies tonight using OEM ballasts and Morimoto 6500k D2S bulbs. I also got Philips DiamondVision H7 5000K bulbs to put in for my high beams to provide a brighter light output.

Pictures above are just the xenon low beam outputs [emoji41]

I now have both headlight assemblies properly sealed so there will no longer be any moisture intrusion issues going forward. The ecodes I pulled off will be worked on with my Morimoto bi-xenon projectors... this will take more time so I wanted to have a more permanent solution installed on my Audi for lighting until I get the bi-xenon projectors retrofitted into the other ecode headlight assemblies.

Nice info in the video, def makes sense for certain applications. And, if doesn't make sense for other applications, who cares? It's still fun to mod our cars the way we want. ;)

I have heard great things about Air Lift Performance kits. Even Matt Farah evaluated one of their kits and had good things to say. I checked out their features and they check all the boxes for what I want on my Audi so this is what I will be getting this summer [emoji41]

Today I had a trio of wagons in my driveway today....

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4902/45973065285_9053fea9cc_o.jpg

It was a nice relaxing day where Botond and I managed to bowl 3 games and get our cars a quick wash to get the undercarriage blasted free of the salt residue...

Just found out tonight that there are possibly fourteen 2001.5 B5 S4 noggy/noggy sport 6MT Avants left in this country. I was told that the actual numbers may be much less today but I know the number is at least 14 assuming that the other thirteen 2001.5 noggy/noggy sport 6MT avants have not been totaled. My Audi just got rarer today....

Daniel,

I use SONAX Upholstery/Alcantara Cleaner when cleaning my Alcantara. It does a great job and I also use a soft bristle brush to loosen up any dirt then use plenty of clean microfiber cloths to dry off the alcantara.

Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) replaced at 170,895 miles.

This sensor failing caused me some grief a few weeks ago and caused my car's engine to shut off. Funny thing is that when I got the car to the dealer, it shut off on me again and when the Audi tech took the car she shut down on him as well. They ran diagnostics on the car and the P0322 Engine Speed Sensor (G28) - No Signal - Intermittent fault did not come up. After discussing with the service advisor what fault my VCDS came up with and how I determined the fault to be an intermittent failing CPS, the Audi tech concurred and went ahead and replaced the part with a new Bosch part I had on the passenger's seat. Road tested the car and everything was sat. I then picked up my car and found no issues so it looks like I have my daily driver back again... nice feeling...

Also good to know that the Audi tech concurred with my assessment of this issue...
