Protection During Transport?

Family,

I will soon be making a four-day, 1,250-mile move, using our X5 to tow my beloved ZHP on a U-Haul trailer, like so:

My question is whether I should consider any sort of protection en route. Something like the OEM outdoor car cover?

Would it remain in place at highway speeds & provide significant protection from the elements? Or do you think I don't really have much to worry about?

I'd assume that a nice wash and wax after the drive would be sufficient but thats only my 2c. Where ya moving to?

I'd skip the car cover as well.

Good coat of wax before the trip would serve you well...

We towed a car cross country once on a trailer without a cover and it worked out fine. We were towing behind a U-haul truck so that blocked any rocks/whatever, but I'd think you'd be fine. John

Ya, you definitely don't want to cover it while towing. That can do damage to the paint from the friction. If it looks like some areas might be in the line of fire from gravel or whatever you could always throw on some blue painters tape over those spots. Headlights for instance.

Probably no issues; the windstream produced by the tow vehicle will deflect the preponderance of damaging missles. I've done this several times with pristine vehicles. Definitely no cover; I have also shipped enclosed transportation - the ultimate.

could debris from the rear tires of the x5 hit it? I feel like the painters tape like mr. m said wouldn't be a terrible idea.

No; the USAF is allowing me four travel days to go from Wright-Patterson AFB to Randolph AFB, based on 350 miles per day. Towing a trailer for the first time (as well as this first time being with my precious ZHP!) & having a wife that'll need relatively frequent stops is plenty of motivation for me to take it easy on the trip.

That was one of my concerns.

I think I'll take everyone's advice & leave it uncovered with some blue painter's tape over the headlights, fog lights, & perhaps some of the leading edges (e.g. front hood edge, side mirrors, splitters, etc.). I've got rolls & rolls of the stuff, so I'll have plenty to replace lost bits along the way.
