#Background
Hello everyone! I purchased my M3 in the fall of 2017 but first, a little background of my history. My first BMW was a 2004 330i Performance Package 6MT, Black Sapphire/Cloth interior that I bought in 2009. Originally it was my daily driver but it evolved into more of a weekend/HPDE car. I threw a "few" (Stoptech ST40 BBK, GC Coilovers, M3 rear subframe/LSD/Brakes and a few more items) mods on there and setup was perfect as a comfortable street trackable car. But the car eventually reached a point where I was itching for more power but did not want to deal with an S54 swap or forced induction. I made the decision to sell it and look for an E90M3. I will forever miss this car!

#The Hunt
It was only natural that an E90M3 replace my E46 ZHP sedan as it was the next generation's best sedan option. I was fortunate enough to sell my car in August and the hunt started! I figured that I should get what I want so I had a fairly strict set of must-have options:
6MT (Absolutely must-have)
LCI E90 (ideally 2011.5 for the bluetooth Combox but okay with early 2011 as well)
Black interior and exterior ideally should be Space gray, Alpine white, or Jerez black in that order.
It wasn't until the search started to become serious where I realized the production numbers for 6MT LCI E90s were a mere 1055 units in North America. ZCP would've been great, but there were only 355 of those! I truly believed I would be searching for months if not years. A month into my hunt (Sept 2017), I found a no-picture ad that had a VIN of a single-owner LCI E90 6MT Alpine white with 52k miles. I immediately hunted for the dealership's phone number and got a hold of the salesman. Long story short, I am a proud owner of an E90M3 2011 Slicktop!

October 2017:
After the trailer dropped off the car from Rhode Island to my place in California. Since the car is a pre-COMBOX car, I bought a WMA3000b for Bluetooth streaming music. This solution is decent enough for me as remote controls on the steering wheel still works. I'm happy with the pricepoint of this "mod."

November 2017:
I got an OEM exhaust mod done by Todd at Exhaust works in Belmont, CA. One of the best mods to date. I really like the noise it makes without adding drone during highway cruising.
The car parked next to my fiance's E30 shows how large the E90 has come since the early 90s!
Sometime during the month as well, I ended up updating my Navigation maps to 2018-1 even though I don't really use it much. 8 years of updates is kinda of nice to have, just in case.
The final pic of the month was during a few drives through local wineries. I have to say I have grown to love the E90M LCI rear end!

December 2017:
There were a few updates this month! I remove the matte black grilles that came with the car and replaced them with OE gloss black ones.
I addressed the squeak seals with teflon tape right before a nice cruise with a friend with a nice alpine white ZHP. An OE euro triangle and first aid kit finishes up the new pieces.
At the end of the month, I dropped off the car at Performance Technic to do WPC Bearings/ARP rod bolts. Motor mounts were also replaced at the same time. As usual, Courtney from Performance Technic did an amazing job with the photos!

January 2018:
I finally took the car out of hibernation and went on a breakfast cruise with a few friends. The list was a fully stacked one. 996TT, 997.1GT3, WRXSTi, Ftype, F82, and my brother on a GSXR.

February 2018:
I ended up finding a great deal on the special BBS GT4RE 18x10 squared set locally from AlekShop. Comparison of the GT4 next to my brother's Msport 335d EC7s. It is hard to notice in the picture, but the spoke sharpness at the middle of the Y is slightly different. It's very subtle and Apex did a really good job getting it pretty damn close. I basically have Apex EC7s with BBS wheels.

And that's where we end for now.
Thanks for reading this very long post! I look forward to enjoying this car for a very long time and continue to update my adventures with it! I hope to build a CS inspired E90. Everyday suitability but race optimized.

Thanks guys! I'm glad I found myself a nice gem. I was a little bummed not to have the desirable competition package but after a little re-assurance from friends, it made sense not to have it. I was planning to upgrade the suspension and rims anyways which would defeat the purpose of buying a ZCP.

I was honestly very surprised. I was expecting to hunt for at least 6 months like yourself. What did you get?

It is part of the premium package. I think it may be optionally added to those without ZPP.

My ZHP...9 years ago... has it been that long? :)
I was thinking you moved on to something else without me knowing ;)
When I was looking for my ZHP, I think it took 6months to find a car that wasn't even fully ideal. I was looking for an Alpine White, Premium, Cold and I somehow settled for a Black Sapphire, Cloth, fixed back. The price helped back then. This time around, I spent more than I really wanted but I got a nice one.
Before we digress too far, back to my M3 :)
# Competition Package EDC
The Competition Package Electronic Damping Control has revise settings compared to the standard EDC from the M3. There is mainly two differences that has been noted online.
1. 10mm shorter springs on the ZCP.
2. Revised Sport Mode to enable variable dampening instead of static 75% stiffness.
In addition, the control of the electronic damper adjustment function EDC includes a Sport mode specially developed for the Competition Package. It is said to adjust the chassis modifications by means of map-based control and the driving stability control function DSC.
##Goal
I originally wanted a ZCP M3 cause those Style 359 rims are the best rims BMW makes. The Suspension had a slight difference that probably would've made me keep the car stock in that aspect. However since rims are just rims and I read on forums of people successfully coding in their EDC to ZCP EDC, I decided to start hunting how to do this. Forums were somewhat unhelpful as most of the folks who knew offer paid services to do it. I'm not about that.
Code my standard EDC into ZCP EDC and document it somewhere online.
The DSC portion of the ZCP package I believe is just Euro MDM. Euro MDM allows more slip angle than the US MDM. Nuff Said.
That is coded into the MK60_M3.Cxx with the follow parameters:
US_VEHICLE Nicht_aktiv
MDYNAMIC_MODE_USA Nicht_aktiv
M3_UEBERSTUEUERN_MUE_0 wert_00
M3_UEBERSTUEUERN_MUE_1_2 wert_00
### The Research
With the help of NCSDummy, I opened up the DATEN File for EDCK65.C1A to see input values and their corresponding data values.
Short description:
dx9023 = Non-ZCP E90 with EDC
dx9030 = ZCP E90 (EDC is standard)
https://i.imgur.com/S8XaOPH.png
https://i.imgur.com/rL31WQN.png
As shown above, the options row shows the requirements to meet in order to use that value as default. An exclamation mark means negate in this situation. The Data row is the output to the module and in this parameter, they are identical. This means this parameter doesn't care if you are a ZCP or non-ZCP, you are getting this value no matter what.
However, in the below one they are different data values of C8 and A0. What these actual values mean is beyond me. However, this helps conclude my research to a specific finding.
https://i.imgur.com/ehfLkD9.png
https://i.imgur.com/xiJKrPr.png
### Proposed coding
Code every parameter to dx09030 should apply all the values from a ZCP to my EDC module. I suppose you don't have to do every parameter as some of them offer the same data value but it is faster(lazier) to just code dx09030 all the way through.
I'm pretty sure this will work as most people suggest feeling revised settings after coding in the ZCP values. However since they either didn't know what they were coding or someone did it for them, I am not 100% sure this will work. (99% maybe.)
I hope I will have some time this weekend to fiddle with it.

There’s no doubt the F80 is one sexy, and downright impressive car, but the E9x is the last of an era (yes I know they say that about every single generation of ///M car).

Of the daydreams I have been having, an E9x M3 is on the short list. I still think about the not-so-stock M3 coupe I was stuck next to in traffic a few years ago. When the bottleneck loosened, that thing took off and the exhaust note sounded like pure sex.

For every person who complains about E/Fxx generation of car there's someone who has one that complains about the next generation after that. It's a vicious cycle. lol

BMW jumped the shark when the E30 replaced the E21.
BMW jumped the shark when the E36 replaced the E30.
BMW jumped the shark when the E46 replaced the E36.
BMW jumped the shark when the E90 replaced the E46.
BMW jumped the shark when the F30 replaced the E90.
The sky is falling.
Fxx generation is a new breed though. Electric power steering, turbos, etc.
What every single generation of ///M car has in common is that each new generation gets bigger and bigger.

Yes me too! Brett has a black E30 M3, white e30 touring, imola Zhp (selling since he bought mine), Black E70 X5d. I think the biggest change will be an exhaust mod.
I'm leaning more and more towards this too... I need a V8 in my life.... if I can just deal with the fuel bill :)
So far I've averaged 8mpg for 13miles cause I was "learning" the torque of the car. LOL. EPA 14/20 is rough.. I would expect around 12mpg or so for when I drive it.
Ideally, I would do some maintenance before the mod bug bites me hard.
-BE Rod Bearings + BE ARP Bolts
-Throttle Actuators
-Idle Control Valve
-Thermostat
When mods do come into play...
The current focus of this vehicle is a weekend warrior with the capability of tracking the vehicle. I'm not sure I want to go to the same extent as the ZHP this time around.
-Retain EDC
I like to retain the luxury button to adjust dampening on my center console. This left with very few options. The cheaper route would be to go with swift spec R springs which were developed for the upper limits of stock shocks. The other spectrum of that would be Bilstien B16 Damptronics at $3000 without a camber kit. I opt to go with the swift spec R springs and coding in the ZCP EDC settings to improve the dampening settings a bit.
-OEM+
With the spacers, I can bring out the look of the car without changing too much. 15mm/12mm seems to be the norm as suggested by EAS's blog.
This car below inspired me by showing me a visual of exactly that. I don't want to follow it exactly (ie painted bumper reflectors, painted CF performance spoiler) but I do like the overall look on the 219M wheels with spacers with a small drop.
https://i.imgur.com/WOkU3zsh.jpg
https://europeanautosource.com/blog/clean-simple-alpine-white-m3-sedan.html
Plans with no immediate timeline.
-Tint (hopefully 40%)
-15mm/12mm Spacers
-90mm Wheel studs
-Swift Spec R springs
-Vorshlag Caster/Camber Kit
-ATE Type 200 Brake Fluid
-SS Brake Lines
-G-LOC R10 brake pads for track
-Apex EC7 Silver or Anthracite 18x10et25 all around on 275/35/18 Bridgestone RE71R
-OEM Exhaust Mod. This one is very cool. The middle chambers are cut open. Baffling is removed and the #5, #6 pipe are replaced with straight pipes instead of perforated. This will most likely cost $300 of labor + 2 hours of my time at a local muffler shop. There is one in Belmont, CA that does these all the time. I might end up doing this one first cause it dramatically changes the soundtrack.

For sure! I need one so badly. Pretty much, everything thing is turbocharged these days. I know V8 car, but I should, because the value of thru V8 German sedan is still affordable.
Derek, your move to E90 is very logical for me. I love a good 4 doors sedan! Since BMW never produced a four door version of e46, e90 is the way to go. And M3 is the great example!
Going backwards to e36 four door m3 in USA is quite a joke, because of that terrible engine.
I am looking forward to the great project thread of 4 door, slick top and that's important, V8 M3.

I totally agree. A friend of mine has a E36 3/4/5 (M3 4door 5speed) in alpine white and it will be fun to take a look at his car next to mine. That S50/S52 USDM models are piss poor compared to the euro S50 with 313hp..
I'm very happy I did not compromise for a coupe. At one point I was starting to give up on the sedan search (2 weeks in..lol)

Having had an S50 in my E30, I can say that the S50 is far from a terrible engine. It is reliable as hell, has great torque for what it is, sounds AMAZING with an intake, and when installed in my 2800lb E30, kept pace with E92 M3's. That's a 174 hp deficit with only a ~700 pound weight difference.
Yes, it is underpowered and frustrating knowing that we could've had better, but to call it terrible isn't fair. :)

No. Seriously. It's a good idea. The most troublesome parts of that car (the DRC and the auto trans) can be replaced for better. My RS6 stood on PSS9s and Mich PSS - fucking glue, man. Swap the slushbox for a proper 6 speed? Pure sex on wheels. (cue: My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult)
I bought my RS6 less than a month after The Beast was born. Solid logic: It will be troublesome to get a car seat into a BMW coupe. I need a sensible family sedan. All wheel drive, safe, auto box so The Beast's Mom can drive it, and gobs of horsepower, a metric shit ton of torque. Rare, so parts are expensive. And fast. Yeah, fast.
Stopped for speeding in it less than a month after I bought it. Extra legal speeds, in the rain, at 430a, going to buy coffee. That stop went well. Then, there was the jaunt heading home to Vegas from Kansas. Lots of legal, but eye-brow raising training gear in the trunk. Balls deep in triple digits blowing past Utah HP... Not my smartest move.
I had to sell it, I was going to land in jail. Now that I am older, more mature, less impetuous, I think I can handle the responsibility.

That's funny cause here I am in the M3, trying to keep the EDC.
## Bluetooth Streaming
During my hunt for an E90 M3, I wanted to buy a 2011.5 E90 because of it's magical migration from the TCU/ULF to a COMBOX. This meant the car would be capable of Bluetooth music streaming. 2011.5 production started in 9/2010. Unfortunately, the M3 I found was built in 5/2010, 4 months shy of the COMBOX production change. Since I don't have bluetooth streaming, I wanted to find a solution without going the full OE Combox retrofit as it is at least $500 in parts.
Enter Tune2Air WMA3000b. It is a bluetooth receiver with a Y-cable adapter for the USB/AUX in the center console. This allows for steering controls to work and track listings to display. For $89, it was worth a shot.
https://i.imgur.com/OmDBH6Ml.jpg
I attempted to try it but I wasn't able to get it working 100% last night. Tracks were not displaying on screen and the steering controls were not working. I did noticed I didn't have any music on my phone. Late last night, I tried added some music to see if the native music app would work. This morning, as I was going to try the native music app, Spotify automatically started playing and my steering wheel controls worked! I wonder if just having one or more songs on the phone registered it to work. I'm not sure but I'm happy that it works and saved me $400.

The CIC navigation isn't the greatest thing in the world. Even though its sub-par I still want the latest version. I checked my navigation version and it is the original 2010 map data! I've been digging around online and found the annoying method to install a map update. A FSC code is required to update the maps even if you source the map data from somewhere. The FSC code is tied to your VIN somehow and requires paying someone for it or someone who knows how to do it with a FSC generator. I found the online resources to generate one and I managed to get through the first steps: getting the data from the car and generating a FSC Code. Next up is uploading the Map Data and using the FSC generated code. I will figure out if it works soon enough.
Edit:
So far, so good.

Technically, you could just pay $300 to the dealer and they can do it for you. Either way, I generated a Lifetime FSC Update code instead of a one-time use one. :)

https://jalopnik.com/bmw-recalls-1-4-million-vehicles-in-the-u-s-over-risk-1820124021
BMW issued a recall for just about every E9x.
Year: 2011
Make and Model: BMW M3 Sedan
October 25, 2017 | Recall Campaign No. 17V-676
BLOWER MOTOR WIRING
Last Updated: November 3, 2017
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
This recall involves the wiring for the system, known as the blower-motor, that controls air flow for the heating and air conditioning system. Over time, the connection between the wiring and this system could deteriorate and, in rare cases, could lead to overheating.
SAFETY RISK
If overheating occurs, this could further lead to a short circuit or melting at the connection. In extremely rare cases, this could lead to a fire.
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The remedy is not available yet. The wiring will be inspected and a new part will be installed. Additional components will be replaced, if necessary, as determined at the time of repair.
For additional information or assistance, please contact Customer Relations and Services at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com or at 1-800-525-7417.

It took about 1hr to do the update with 4 USB sticks which isn't too bad considering how slow USB Flash drives transfers at. Now I have 2017 maps for a navigation I will probably never use. LOL. I guess its better than 2010 maps..
I'm starting to get used to a 16.6 gallon tank eating up about 250miles average before the light comes on. :) #V8Life

Springs + spacers make a huge difference in the looks department. I have the Eibach Pro Kit with 15/12 spacers, my cousin has the Swifts on his E90 M3, we measured before/after and the drop was identical, even though the Swifts claim to be just slightly lower than Eibach. Both look awesome, and like you said you retain EDC.

Thanks for the input Jeff! Fiancee's 335i is lowered on Swift Spec R and I am very impressed with the ride quality while still reducing body roll during cornering. EDC is very odd on the M3 simply because the bumpstops were engineered differently that I normally think about suspension. The bumpstops were designed to be not just prevent bottoming out but also act as a progressive spring rate to give a softer spring rate on light compression and stiffer on heavy cornering. The suspension travel is very low on stock height and lowering it does compromise the travel. Hopefully Swift doesn't hurt it too much.
I think I will be planning in terms of suspension:
Coding ZCP EDC settings - Checked
Swift Spec R Springs
New Bumpstops
Vorshlag Camber/Caster Kit
15/12 Spacers
Wheel Studs
The pace when these items are done will be determined on how long it takes my car to be up and running with maintenance first. Rod bearings first!

My cousin loves the Swift's, definitely a great choice Derek!
The Eibach's don't feel any stiffer/harsher than stock to me, but improve handling and looks - I only went with Eibach because I'm not really a big mod guy (OEM+), and aside from Dinan, they advertise the most conservative drop, though again the front ended up being a full inch (same as the Swift's) even though they're quoted at .8 inches.
Good call on rod bearings - other than a OneEighty headlight retro-fit which I had to do (hate the stock coronas), rod bearings were one of the first things I did. Great piece of mind, and even though we probably both plan to drive these cars for a long time, having the RB's replaced will make it easier to own/drive/enjoy these cars, and easier to sell when that day comes!
Look forward to following this thread.

Thanks man! I'll update as much as I can.
##Suspension
The problem is that I want to retain EDC while having the best track like handling. Unfortunately, I think I'm looking for a unicorn setup that doesn't exist! I’ll have to compromise on something in order to retain the EDC functionality. A b16 damptronic would be amazing but at MSRP, I cant imagine keeping EDC and opting for MCS coilovers for the best track setup. This leaves springs as the only option that will fit the bill at a decent price point.
Swift springs on paper looks like the best spring setup with my track handling goal in mind. Eibach, H&R and BG all seem to aim for OEM like comfort with a small drop to fill the fender gap. It also seems like swift is the only vendor that list spring rates on their website. My experience with swift coil over springs on my ZHP has been nothing but great. With the plan to track the car, it makes sense! The drop is also not low enough to cause headaches with suspension travel.
##Bearings
From my research, it seems like a lottery for factory bearings to wear properly. I'm not sure the severity of the actual cases but it is enough of a concern for myself to spend the extra coin. This car will get some track time and I want a little insurance that the engine isn't going to grenade due to bad bearing clearances. I’ve read about issues with coated bearings still and the only real solution is the BE bearings.
##Angel Eyes
I haven't really looked at aftermarket rings beyond just the lux 180 bulbs. The stock design is really silly and makes for poor light distribution with led bulbs. I️ mean look at it!

I replaced mine with BE bearings at 63K miles earlier this year and condition on the originals was not bad at all. Some minor wear, but I had a ways to go. But of course there's no way to know that until you get in there. And at that point, it makes sense to replace them.
Another M3 owner had his bearings replaced same week as me, same shop - his car had 57K miles and look how bad his were -

#Update
In a previous post, I mentioned I was planning to go this route due to the OE look while sounding slightly louder.
https://i.imgur.com/HFKTJelh.jpg
There are a few variations of the OEM Exhaust mod and the one I decided to go with is called "The Perforated" mod. The 5/6 perforated pipes in the above picture are replaced with solid pipes and the baffling is removed from the inner chambers. This variation provides a better growl while not droning in the cabin. It reminded me of the TSE3.
Here is a video of it:
http://youtu.be/JssRnCH39UA?t=1m11s
I researched online for local muffler shops who had experience with this modification. All the local posts point to Exhaust Works in Belmont, CA. Todd has done numerous of these modifications and when I contacted him, I was quoted $300 and 3hrs downtime. Not bad at all! During the service, Todd allowed me to view the underbody to gauge the rust on the underbody. Overall it isn't that bad but I do want to look into addressing it. JP mentioned Rust Converters so I'll have to talk to him more about it. Us California boys been blessed with good rust-free cars so I don't have a clue on how to treat it. Back on topic, Todd did an amazing job. The exhaust ground straps broke and I'll have to order some new ones.

Initial Impressions
Cabin noise is still quiet and I don't have to yell to talk. There is no drone yet the noise is a little deeper in tone. When I go WOT, the interior noise sounds louder and I bet it sounds alot better outside. It just sounds more V8-ey.
While driving in traffic home, I passed a friend's work in ugly traffic and he spotted me from his window.

I like to top off the POR15 with either an undercoat or epoxy, just to seal it all up.
Re: the bolts—if it’s just the heads, you can lightly brush them (not enough to impact head shape), and POR15 them too. Or you can buy replacement bolts, if you’re really worried about it. The small fasteners on my Hoser-Mobile are definitely showing the effects of the north, but the large fasteners are all perfectly usable.

## Some BMW OE parts
The car came with some matte black grilles and I expressed my dislike for them a few times. I debated between the BMW Performance Gloss Black Grilles and the BMW M3 edition Black Chrome Grilles. Ultimately, I went with the BMW performance ones since the gloss black matches the window trim and was $50 cheaper than the M3 edition grilles.
My brother noticed the trim behind the grill was a little faded and needed some love. Meguair's Forever Black was the perfect product to take care of that!

Just an extra tiny something from stock. I didn’t want my tires to die a ton more faster. I’m at 0.19° toe in on both rear tires. The front is a tiny something less than stock. So I’ll see how that is in the dry to help counteract that heavy iron block.

##Rod Bearings
Rod bearings are so interesting on the S65 motor. It isn't known how big of a problem it is, or if it is just the forums fanning the fire. It is a problem but it's hard to say if it is 2% or like huge probelm like the forum thinks it is. However, the inevitable Schrodinger's cat scenario has caused enough stress for me. I've schedule an appointment to get the rod bearings and engine mounts replaced at Performance Technic next week.

Just get a Blackstone oil analysis. [emoji1417][emoji1417]
Unfortunately during the middle of the production of the S65B40, the rod bearings changed from lead/copper to some harder aluminum material. This change makes the metal composition in UOA useless for detecting accelerated bearing wear. I am not sure if I met the production change for my bearings. Either way, I plan to track the monster so I rather just do it at this point.

Marco's Clone 1.0 is amazing. I'm curious why the owner of Clone 2.0 is selling it. Maybe cause you have to drop the motor to do sparkplugs? Either way, 2.0 is one amazing machine for the street.

ARIGATO! I probably would've been pissed as the clamps I bought were meant for the red one and wouldn't work for the blue one.

#Alpine White Sedan Man-Date
I had the day off yesterday and I met up with Dustin to pick up my brake bleeder bottle, help him with his SES light, fix my squeaky door seals, a mini cruise and lunch.
https://i.imgur.com/TjDkgzFh.jpg
#Squeaky door seals
Ever since I got the car, when the car goes over bumps or any imperfections of the road, I would hear squeaking from the door seals. Mad shout out to Dustin for this one! I knew this issue existed with BMWs for years now and I always thought the solution was Gummi Pflege. Dustin said that was a temporary fix and even Fxx series cars had the same issue. BMW issued a SIB 51 28 10 (Attached to this post) regarding the squeaks back in 2008! Anyways, the fix is to apply Teflon tape on the inner door jams where the window trim touches the door seals. The factory BMW "3M Teflon tape" as usual, cost arm and a leg and Dustin had success with one from Amazon that cost under $7.
Product:
TapeCase 423-5 UHMW Tape 3/4" x 5yds (1 Roll)
https://i.imgur.com/ICuwI6dh.jpg
After Dustin helped install the Teflon tape, there were no more squeaks or noises coming from the door seals! The V8 noise won't be disrupted by unwelcome squeaks! (at least not from the door seals.)
#Dustin's Swisher Smoke Tester
Dustin's ZHP has been getting an SES light with the infamous P1074, P1071 codes. Initially, his intake boots were bad, so he replaced those. The light would still show up again. Dustin found a random DIY on youtube that used a pump + latex glove and Swisher sweet for the smoke. This was downright hilarious but it works!
https://i.imgur.com/fg7eP6xh.jpg
The leak test did not show any signs of leaking. A quick boot up of ISTA/D and running a vehicle test on the car showed that P1074, P1071 codes existed along with a MAF code. I ran the ISTA/D troubleshooting test plan and the MAF passed all the voltage ranges. This screamed exactly what happened to my ZHP except I hunted the issue for over 3 years due to lack of daily driving it to figure it out. I think the next step for Dustin is to swap the MAF with someone to confirm, or just suck it up and buy a new one.
#Cruise to Bolinas for Lunch
After dealing with these two items, we decided to go on a cruise to Bolinas, CA to enjoy the cars.
The route we took went from Petaluma > Nicasio > Fairfax > Bolinas. On our return, both of us were heading to Oakland so we took Highway 1 > Panoramic highway back to the main freeway 101N.
Here is the link to the route:
https://goo.gl/GCgHYh
https://i.imgur.com/eD8DT1Wh.png
Zoomed into the fun.
https://i.imgur.com/5bWr3jY.png
Fairfax to Bolinas is one tight course! There are a few sections where it is far too bumpy for the EDC Sports suspension but EDC button allowed me to play with the suspension stiffness. Comfort mode was perfect and setting the Power to normal helped reduce the joltiness when the car when over bumps. The sports steering mode help combat when bumps move my body and ultimately made unnecessary movements on the steering wheel. With a heavier steering wheel, it almost fought those extra movements. Call me impressed! The road was a bit tight and forced the car to be between 2nd and 3rd but mostly 3rd around 3-4k. Dustin's ZHP looked way more fun at these sections as he was able to ring out 2nd and 3rd.
M Drive Settings:
Power: Normal
Steering: Sport
DSC: MDM mode
EDC: Comfort
Panoramic Highway is much smoother and not as tight. The M3 definitely shined here. There was more room to utilize 2nd gear and 3rd gear and the corners were tight enough for 2nd gear downshifts. It was very fun!
M Drive settings:
Power: Sport
Steering: Sport
DSC: MDM mode
EDC: Sport

#Impressions
A lot of people have asked me the infamous question:
"Is your old ZHP better or the stock M3?"
My answer always has been "It depends." I do not regret going to an E90M but I still do miss the ZHP. It definitely is cheaper fun than the M3 but I think the M3 smiles make my face hurt more. :)

##Performance Technic
I dropped off the car at Performance Technic in the morning for rod bearings. Unfortunately, BE bearings are out of stock everywhere and there is even a thread on M3post regarding the backorder suggesting there is no ETA in sight. Since Christmas week is the only week traffic is relatively light to Performance Technic, I went with Brandon's (Service Advisor at P-Tech) suggestion to go with the WPC coated rod bearings. Performance Technic has done a few of WPC so in reality, it doesn't really matter. I bet in another 50k, I'll have to do it again. Hopefully, when that time comes around, there will be a permanent fix.
For now, the E90M is with some good company for the next two days.

The larger wheels do have a little better turn-in and road feel, not to mention more clearance for BBK's and such. I don't know anything about classing and what GT-4 means, but I'm guessing he may have a BBK on there. It's hard to tell from the picture...

Labor was quoted ~$2000. The rod bearings + arp rod bolts were around $1000. The engine mounts and all other misc items like oil pan gasket, oil, powersteering fluid add to the cost too. I think all in all its between $3300-$3500. It's not cheap but its mainly due to the labor cost being high in my area. I'm sure I could've gotten it done cheaper in Southern California, but I trust Performance Technic guys. It makes it alot easier to get any issues fixed since they are so much closer.
I may have gawked at the 1M clone 1.0 more often than I should've as it is the track monster I would never make for myself. I even been passed so hard by clone 1.0

I have to agree but they are 19s. Tires = premium and people are asking $2000 for a set of the rims used! With about 1300 or so ZCP optioned M3s, that gives a very small pool of rims out there for sale. I rather buy a full set of Apex EC7 18x10et25 all around or wait for my cousin's set of BBS GT4 for rarity. :)

Plus it is BBS motorsport designed for BMW, so still "OE" in those terms! The major plus here is that they are 18" rims. 265/35/18 Front, 285/35/18s Rear would be the ideal staggered setup. If not, EC7, 275/35/18 all around! :)

The 1300 # (I think it's technically 1220 but whatever right!) is E90 ZCP production, they built a ton more E92 ZCP's + all the people who bought ZCP wheels after the fact. So lots of sets out there for sale but I agree with you people ask a premium for them, and most have rash and finish issues. By the time you repair them you could buy a new set, as they aren't that much $ new. Everybody has ZCP wheels...those BBS look like they're worth the wait!

You are absolutely right on that stat. I mistakenly have forgotten the coupes and verts! There is a fair amount of the rims out there but they still command at least $2000.

How many examples of the E90 M3 sedan and E92 M3 coupe were produced with the optional Competition Package (ZCP)?
PM91 (ECE-spec M3 sedan, LHD, with ZCP): 165
PM92 (ECE-spec M3 sedan, RHD, with ZCP): 116
PM93 (NA-spec M3 sedan, LHD, with ZCP): 1,220

4x EC7 with BBS stickers! Just kidding.. it's 4x Brand new 18x10et40 BBS GT4 RE. In contrast, my cousin's set is a 18x9.5/18x.10 so this set actually fits me better! I can run 275/35/18 tires like I wanted with the EC7s! The one bummer is that TPMS doesn't necessarily fit with these wheels but I can figure out something.
Now to figure out which tire to buy..and which spacers/studkit to go with.

I just spoke with TireRack and the Micheline P4S just arrived at their warehouse today in 275/35/18. $286/each. I believe I can already order them. I even asked about the Dunlop Direzza ZIII and those are arriving aroudn 3/16 for $312each.
Decisions, decisions.
PSS $268/ea
P4S $286/ea
RE71R $265/ea
ZIII $312/ea
RS4 (no 275/35/18)
I probably will go with P4S.
I’m surprised that RE71s are cheaper than PSS and P4S. Always thought they were quite expensive...

They are more expensive not in purchase price, but in the fact that you'll have to replace them every time you go for a drive.
You'll have enough grip to rip your face off, but you pay for it dearly with tread life... or lack thereof. :)

haha... but i thought they were not terrible in terms of tread wear?
i had track time on them in a formula 2000 car about 18 months ago. really nice tires, very predictable breakaway. i've been considering a set for the RennWagen/Growlour. those or PSS, or PS4S (depending on size... they're supposed to release more sizes this spring).

I only got about 1.5 track events out of them, or about (6) 30-minute sessions. My RE-11's lasted an entire season of auto-x as well as 3 track events before they gave up the ghost!
Lots of people complain about tire wear with this tire - it's a known issue. But, you give up tire wear for unmatched grip.

Yea, most people I've seen have 1-2second faster laptimes with brand new RE71Rs. They do wear tremendously fast compared to the other tires and that is a concern even though I don't drive it that often. I think the choice really is a toss between P4S and Z3. I have to determine if the goal is better traction or longer life. Chances are it will be at least 2-3 years before I replace the tires again.

I’d go with that. I think the 1M wasn’t anywhere near as pretty as the M2 is and the f80 is a step up on paper from the e90, but noise it makes is terrible compared to the V8. To me these cars are still analog cars in a digital world, and I’m fine with that.

What’s the difference in purchase price between an E90 M3 and an M2? ~$20k? It takes a lot of tanks to get to that, assuming that’s “the only problem” you have.

Agreed on the post-E46 lineup. The only other BMW-challenger for me would be the 1M if just for its ugly hodgepodge nature. Otherwise the E90 M3 is my favorite of that generation, and the M2 is the only current offering from BMW that appeals to me.

Thanks guys!
Mineral Gray is an amazing color. Pre-LCI production numbers show it is the lower take in exterior color with Long beach being the highest.
I love my E90M but the F87M advancement in technology is insane. The car did not come with AppleCarplay from factory but since this car runs iDrive6.0, I was able to log into the Connected Store and just select it, pay for the option, and then boom its available and ready to go with Wireless Carplay! The F87 feels like an E46M3 sized car with factory heavily modified N55 motor and DCT. I really like boost and the Active Sound Design sounds pretty amazing. I can't wait to start fiddling with E-SYS and messing with the parameters to do all the fun coding we all love to do on BMWs. :)
We are a double-income children-less couple so it's fun! E90M3 is more "practical" but with a terrible MPG compared to the F87's ~30mpg highway.
Pricing
A good E90M3 LCI 6MT now commands premiums between 34k-45k depending on absurdness and who is selling the rarity. With only 1055 LCI 6MT, it will be hard to find a nice one for cheap. DCT ones are not as rare but still rare compared to the E92/E93s.
2018MY LCI F87 is around $60k but all the dealerships near us are pushing $10K markup. So far production has about 4k units for Pre-LCI and I'm not sure how many they are making for LCI.
Back to E90M!

# BBS GT4 RE Installation Day
Today is GT4 install day! After finally caving and buying tires on Tuesday, it's time to install them!
## Goal for Today
Install Apex 90mm wheel studs
Install Apex 15/18mm Spacers
Install BBS GT4 REs w/ 275/35/18 Michelin PS4S
Remove TPMS (Tire Pressure Sensor) or referred as RDC
Code in FTM (Flat Tire Monitor) or referred as RPA
## Coding
The BBS GT4s use 8mm valve-stems instead of the factory BMW 11mm valve-stems. For those who wish to retain TPMS sensors, there is an option here: https://www.tpms.com/BBS_wheel_TPMS_Valve_Stem_RDV001_adapter_0915094_p/bbsrdv.htm I personally didn't want to spend the extra money for this and second set of sensors. I figured the economical decision is to ditch the whole wheel sensors altogether and revert back to the Euro E9x/Pre-LCI E9x FTM system.
FTM = It uses the speed sensors in each wheel and compares rotational speeds to check if there is a differential between wheels. This will determine if there is a flat if there is a large deviation. The con is if there is a decrease in tire pressure across ALL tires due to not checking, it will not detect that. (ie. All tires drop to 29psi instead of set 33psi)
TPMS = This uses sensors in the wheels and connects to a main RDC unit in the passenger rear wheel well (at least for LCI E90 2010+). This system is more accurate but can get costly with extra sensors when multiple sets of rims or in my case, racing rims that were not designed for TPMS.
During my research, I found a thread that describing exactly what I wanted to do! http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1145078 Thanks @improvius for documenting this awesome finding!
The first step is to take off the rear right wheel and undo the inner fender liner. After that, I unplugged the RDC module which is in the lowest rearmost area of the fender liner. Next up, coding!
### NCSExpert changes
Remove $2VB vehicle order
Add $265 vehicle order
FA Write to the CAS module
Either code defaults to CAS, KOMBI, DSC, CIC or add the following code to the corresponding module:
CIC: RPA_CIC

CIC: RDC
nicht_aktiv
CIC: RDC_SAFETY
nicht_aktiv
KOMBI: RDC_ALIVE

## Impressions
Final Specs:
Front: 18x10+25 275/35/18 Michelin PS4S
Rear: 18x10+22 275/35/18 Michelin PS4S
The rear looks like it has room for a 20mm spacer instead of an 18mm. The front is perfect with the 15mm spacer. For now, I'll leave it as is. I didn't get to drive it more as I had some errands to take care of. Back into the garage, it goes!
Initial impression of the square setup is that the steering is a bit looser but I will check more the next time I drive it. I'm now itching to lower it... YIKES.
Thanks for reading! :)

##Update on BBS GT4s
Unfortunately, I'm getting a vibration in the steering wheel above 60mph. The wheels were re-balanced with road force twice and the vibration has minimized but is still present. I have a gut feeling the spacers have some issue with the hub surface.
I'll try a few things the next time I have some time to get the car up in the air.
Re-clean the brake rotor hub again with wirebrush/brake cleaner
Add some anti-seize on the hub lip
Torque wheels without full weight (jacked up)
My brother took it for a test drive today on a foggy morning and reported the vibration has reduced from the first test drive but still noticeable. Hopefully tomorrow, I'll be able to get the car up and ensure the spacers have the best surface to attach to.
The car looks great from the rear [emoji6]

https://i.imgur.com/KoMfKneh.jpg
The car looks great and its time to start working on the rest of items.
##Initial Goals
My intended goals with this car is to build a wonderful street car with the capabilities of going to an HPDE and not destroying itself.
Capable of street comfort (upper limit of tolerance is fine)
Capable of surviving a weekend at the local tracks without fuss.
Reasonable cost of parts.
For the braking situation, I think I'll try getting Castrol SRF fluid (great wet boiling point, SS brake lines (not sure which brand yet), and PFC 08 pads for longevity benefits. I may just get a set of rotors to be ready on hand when I toast these...
Suspension however, I am left undecided...
### The Suspension Options
Option 1: ~$844 Swift Spec R Springs, Vorshlag Camber Plates
Option 2: ~$2500 Swift Spec R Springs, Vorshlag Camber Plates, B6 Damptronic suspension
Option 3: ~$3500 Vorshlag Camber Plates, B16 Damptronic suspension, retain EDC
Option 4: $~2900 Vorshlag camber plates, Ohlins Road & Track Coilovers, Lose EDC
Option 5: $unknown ZCP Suspension for E90. Rare, hard to find used and expensive if it is new
Option 1 initially seemed to be the most logical but reviews are mixed and ultimately I probably will be unhappy with it. Option 2 may have the same outcome as Option 1 but the price is so close to the coilovers, it might be worth it just to ignore this option. Option 3 would be nice to retain EDC but I am unclear how compliant it will be on the street. Option 4 has wonderful reviews of its street compliance but lacking track stiffness. This does sound more in line with what I am aiming for. Another note for the Ohlins is the rebuild interval is suggested at 50k and Bilsteins are rated at 100k. Performance Shock Shop is a local to me so it might be a moot in that situation. The downfall of the ohlins is that EDC will be lost. Option 5 is to find ZCP suspension for an E90 and utilize it. I have NO clue if this actually will make any sense as I probably will be unhappy with the ride height if I'm spending money on it.
With my intentions to have this car mainly street with 3-4 HPDEs a year, Ohlins R&T sounds like the best bang for the buck. A few searches on this forum also suggest that there is no need for more wheel clearance like the KW coilovers (maybe bilstien needs it too?) for the Ohlins. EDC seems like a hassle to retain unless I opt for the B16 Damptronics. It is a tight race between the Ohlins R&T and the B16s. Right now I'm leaning towards the Ohlins by 80%. The 20% reserve is that magical ability to retain that cool EDC button in the center console..LOL. The trackrat in me wants to the granularity of independent rebound adjustment, where the tech guy in me wants to utilize the cool technology the car has. Decisions decisions.

## Vibrations
After a full month of on and off diagnosis, we finally figured out what as wrong! I called TireRack and they suggested another tire shop take a look at it too. So I took it to my guy, Ron at Dependable Tire & Brake in San Rafael. He found the tires were not 100% seated in the groove of the rim and caused the wheel to have lateral runout. This is what caused any road force testing to fail miserably. After remounting the tire again with lots of lube, he was able to get great numbers for the road force. The high 18lb one went on the rear passenger.

##DME Update
I purchased a BimmerGeeks KDCAN cable to update my DME to the latest BMW software. The BimmerGeeks cable has a firmware update that differentiates it from other cables. The benefit of the firmware update is that it will allow a MSS60 DME update without erroring out and corrupting the data on the DME.
https://i.imgur.com/xOQCoDmh.jpg
I updated my DME to the latest DME update known as 241E. My first initial test drive and the low end feels smoother than when it was on the 200E update. Cold start seems louder but I think this might be superficial due to adaptations lost.
Either way: :happyanim:
Cheers to a great week to you all! :)

#PhotoDump!
Dustin's friend had the opportunity to borrow an F90 M5 from BMW NA for a few days so naturally, I wanted to check it out and feel the power of 600hp monster. This car is too crazy at 0-60mph in 3.2s (BMW official numbers, C&D did it in 2.8s). That car is too much. I also took some pics of the dirty E90M :)

Ended up cutting the rear lip off, and I actually rub more in the front. My rubbing is mostly from my Original OEM 122k suspension.

1) All of those cars are stunners are beautiful
2) The more I see the new M5, the more unassuming it appears to me. I'm not sure why, when it does have pretty aggressive looking front end.

well... and that is a pretty aggressive fitment for a non-M.
bummer you had to cut the inner fender lip off. i don't think that would be necessary with the 18x9.5 ET43.

i think it's because of the wheel and tire choice, and no fender flares.
but 0-60 in 2.8s... frig, man.

##Mini Off-Topic F87 day!
Fiance and I took the post-Memorial Tuesday off and went on a mini little drive after doing some errands. We took the F87 out for some pictures and this car is just plain nimble and fun! I just installed M performance gloss black grilles and looks great!

Thanks man! I really think all Ms should just come with black and ditch all the chrome. The M2 is a great blend of practicality and power. I really like it. The E90M doesn't have that same level of practicality cause of the fuel consumption..

The competition will be the only M2 available... Comes with a hefty price increase. Might backfire on BMW as they push it out of the price range of potential buyers of the current M2

Ironically the reason they are now using the s55 is emissions.

I forgot about the MY2016 M2 Performance Edition, MY2018 Black Shadow Edition as well!
The M2 Competition increase in price isn't actually that bad considering the upgraded brakes, "upgraded" seats, S55 motor, and upgraded cooling.

man as beautiful as it is.. i could never buy one of these new BMWs, every year they are leap frogged. this new M2 Comp will just be replaced with something much better next year and then you are no longer driving the latest and greatest. it used to be you could get a few years out of your purchase of feeling great but now a days you barely get a year and then you are bottom of the barrel to the next version. (i'm obviously being overly dramatic but you get my point)

You aren't wrong though about the M2.
Supposedly an M2 CSL is coming as well.
That brings the models to:
M2
M2 Performance Edition
M2 Black Shadow Edition
M2 LCI
M2 Competition
M2 CSL????
All in a span of 2016-2019 so far, maybe 2021 for CSL? who knows. They will throw another edition in there somewhere.
E9x Ms also had the same problem with "special editions."
M3
M3 LCI (E90:09-11,E92:11-13)
M3 Frozen editions
M3 Edition
M3 Competition Edition
M3 DTM Champion Edition
M3 Frozen Limited Edition
Only two real important ones:
M3 CRT
M3 GTS
Frankly, it doesn't really matter. As long as you enjoy the car I don't think it really matters about having the latest or greatest. You will always be behind unless you keep throwing money at it. Only real way to get the best of a generation is to wait for production to end and attempt to buy a used late model one. You might spend more money or time finding one but it will be the last of the generation.

Wasn’t there an E92 Lime Rock Park Edition too, in some special orange paint? Not sure where that falls into the spectrum, but we definitely live in an age where the 7-8year chassis runs are dying out.

There was a fascination with GTS wheels (Style 359 Black) and Lime rock cars came with black or silver 359s. :)
