View Full Version : Anyone repainted their ZHP??? - I'm considering it.

I spent a good bit of time looking online for a clean ZHP with fairly low mileage. Most everything out there had close to or over 100K miles, so I settled for one with 68K. I live in New Orleans and the car I found was located at a dealership in San Francisco. It was a one owner car, had just undergone a full inspection by BMW and all the used car info sites gave it a good score and showed no accidents. The photos looked great but photo's can be deceiving...hello...Photoshop. So I asked the dealer about the condition of the paint and body. He told me that there was a small dent on the right rear fender and that it appeared that both rear quarter panels had been painted at some point. I thought no big deal and bought it site unseen. When it arrived, he was right about both rear fenders and as it turns out, both bumpers had also been repainted. I checked out the damage to the rear fenders that prompted their repaint, and the damage was negligible and identical on both sides as if the car was caught in an automatic closing gate or something. The previous owner was a woman, so I understand about the repaint on the bumpers.
My car was delivered at night. The next day I discovered that upper side of the entire body was covered with fine scratches in weird erratic patterns. I've tried everything to remove them, including wet sanding, but they're through the clear coat. I had planned on having only the rear quarter panels and bumpers refinished, but at this point I'm worried about paint matching, so an entire re-spray doesn't really involve that much more.
Also thinking of replacing the hood with an OEM M3 alloy hood. They cost less than some of the carbon fiber ones out there and I like the fact that it's OEM as well, not to mention weight savings.
So, has anyone re-sprayed their car? If so, how long was it in the shop, how much did it cost and what was the quality level of the work?

That M3 hood doesn't fit right out of the gate. It will require bodywork to make it fit properly.

I’ve thought about doing this and I think the price might change in certain areas or not. I’m not even sure correct me if I’m wrong on that.
But in NYC I asked a regular Dominican Paint Shop and they quoted me $3,000 for the whole car. I don’t really trust their quality of work. I wouldn’t get my zhp repainted their. Maybe just my front and back bumpers since I live in the the city my bumpers both have to get repainted every year. So I go to them because it’s cheaper but notice the quality is not the best.
I went to a reputable Paint Shop and was quoted $4,500 plus tax and I went to another shop and was quoted $5,000 plus tax.. so yeah a pretty freaking penny to repaint the whole car. But I’m sure they’re quality of work is good. Compared to the Dominican Shops.
Those are the prices I was quoted in my area Bronx/Manhattan/New Rochelle Area.
I don’t really know if they’re good prices or not to be honest again. So anyone with more knowledge on this can shine in on us.
PS: a Dominican Shop will charge me $250 flat to paint a whole front bumper.
A Regular Shop will charge me $450-$500 plus tax to paint a whole front bumper.

Come to Atlanta, I have a guy that will paint your whole car, fill and smooth any dings, primer the car and paint 5 base coats and 3 coats of clear for probably around $1300-$1500 as long as there isnt any major damage and you arent doing a color change.

I had mine repainted. I strongly recommend it if the clear coat is going bad.
I spent $1.6k and it was absolutely worth it. The car looks brand new again.

I don't know how you guys are getting such insane pricing. A car repaint is easily $4-6k in most places.

There's really no damage to speak of and it doesn't show up in photos. It's just that rear quarter panels were poorly repaired and re-sprayed at one time and the color is slightly off. It's weird because it appears that the damage to both rear quarter panels was almost exactly the same on both sides, like the car got caught in an automatically closing gate or something. Both the bumpers were also re-sprayed at one time with about the same results. A friend of mine has one of those paint density scanners and the rest of the paint appears to be factory, but it's covered in very fine scratches and most are throught the clear. I think this may have happened in shipping.
I was going to have the bumpers and rear quarter panels leveled out and re-sprayed to match, then have the rest of the body wet sanded and either buffed out or re-cleared. After thinking about this a bit, I doubt a full re-spray in the original color would cost any more.
How long did this guy take to finish your car?

My ZHP has many small spots in the clear-coat on the hood, roof and trunk--probably tree sap or bird shit (previous owner's doing--not mine). A local place in central Vermont withh a good reputation quoted me $1,800 to do the hood, roof, and trunk in the same color (Jet Black). They quoted me $7,000 to do the whole car. I would LOVE to spend only a few grand on a complete, respectable job...

Just a thought, but could you wait for a JB part out and snag the hood and trunk, and then just get the roof redone? I'm thinking that because you're not comparing the roof to any immediately adjacent panels, it won't have to be done with a 100% perfect match. What I'm saying is, you have a bit of elbow room when it comes to the finished product.

That's a good thought... I'll investigate pricing on hoods and trunks. One problem might be that most hoods are going to have a fair number of dings.

I don't see dings on hoods very often. I usually see them on doors from door-banging incidents at the parking lot. I think you'll be okay. :)

I'll keep an eye out for JB part outs in the northeast. Any really its the spots on the clear coat thats the issue. Even if the hood you find has some scratches, a good weekend with a buffer should go a long way. Then again, 1800 for all three panels to be done, doesn't sound too terrible. So it would only make sense if you can get the hood an trunk for a couple of hundred.

My clear coat was just fading. On the trunk it was literally peeling. Above the mirrors and door handles it was gone a long time, and above the rear pillars it was also going

I just might do this when I'm ready for a respray. I was going to get just the front clip done but I have a ding on the roof so what the hell... for that price, I might as well get the whole car done...

a little over 1 week. he only works at nights. he started with marking all the spots where dings were, then fill them all in, then primered whole car, wet sanded, painted base coats 4-5 i believe, then sprayed clear coat, 2-3 i believe. waited for paint to cure then performed a buff polish service and then sealed it up with sonax cc36 ceramic coating.
had take left over paint and clear coat and mix me up 3 medium bottles of paint matched touch up paint. nice to have as well.

Ahh I see...
I hope this message comes off as informative rather than rude, because I know sometimes text online is completely misread. My thoughts... This is possibly worse than asking what oil to use in your car. Reason being, this is an extremely subjective topic with tons of variables. Subjective because we all see things differently and on top of that we all have different levels of both training (detailing, body shop, etc.) and levels of meticulousness (quality control, eye for detail, etc). Throw in there the variables... all the different types of paints and tools used for painting, so results can vary from completely shit to absolute perfection. Then of course there's the question of getting a deal because you know a guy, but usually the only way that gets you an actual good, quality job is if the guy you know is a great painter with access to a good booth or the owner of that booth who hires a great painter.
Long story short, a $1000 Maaco job will look great to some people and a $5000-6000 reputable body shop paint job will look "decent" to others. Then there's 1 Maaco shop out of every quadrillion that hired a good painter, good prepper and the $1000 job will look like or better than the above mentioned $5000 job.
Long story shorter, you can expect to pay a reputable shop that does good quality anywhere from $5000-10,000 for a full car paint job (this is retail and assumes you don't have a connection). This price will fluctuate based on location as well.
My recommendation is to find a reputable shop in somewhat of your price range and inspect at least 2-3 FULL cars they have painted. If they don't have any ready, wait for them to do it and see it in a few days or at least see multiple panels. Anyone can get lucky doing a panel or two (myself included with spray paint from automotivetouchup.com on my work van trunk, which looked nearly as good as oem due to OCD sanding, etc.), so see multiple panels on multiple cars. Again, preferable full cars so you can see exactly how they deal with jambs, prepping everything, taping/removing all trim, etc.
I'm considering this myself as my car has been poorly repainted probably 1-2 times in its life before I got it, but spending $6-8k on a toy that cost me $6k is a touch decision. Then again, with all the maintenance and mods that is now a $14k toy :).
Hope you get a great job done if/when you go through with it buddy.

Seems way too cheap. What kind of paint does he use?
he uses MIPA paint and clear coat products. ive shown the car to several people that say they are in the "auto paint industry" and they all find little things they would have done differently but as soon as i tell them the price paid, they are still shocked.
i have posted pictures, water beading videos etc..
it is really cheap and things that make it cheap are:
- its a guy that does this on his own.
- does maybe 1-2 full cars a week
- does prep work during day and paints at night
- why? because he paints out of a large storage unit no paint booth
- no paint booth you say? yes no paint booth. my car was painted in a storage unit taped up with ventilation. i watched and saw his process. it does have its faults...the paint flashed and dried properly... on the 3rd clear coat layer, right before it was finished... a mosquito landed in the clear.. obviously he left it in and after everything was dried and cured, the mosquito was removed mostly through a buff and polish service. did i complain? nope because i knew exactly what i was getting out of it and i knew what i was paying for. I had proper expectations set in my mind and couldnt be happier with my paint job.
- i had to remove several pieces on my own to bring costs down...Door handles, tail lights, roof rails, headlights, bumper strips front and rear, mirrors.
in the end I am very happy. I paid $1250 for paint job, $350 for buff and polish service, $80 for Sonax CC36 ceramic coating I applied myself and I have a car that has shiny beautiful paint that has no swirl marks, consistent color between all my body panels, no orange peel and no waves.
everyone has different expectations and levels of entitlement when they are paying for something with their own money so take the info and outcome with a grain of salt.
pictures of paint as of recent.
