View Full Version : Can a factory reflash improve performance?

Some of you know that I killed my perfectly good 100k ZHP motor with a careless mistake. It was replaced with a 110k motor that had been compressiion tested and was in good condition (all fresh gaskets/seals installed). The new motor seems to drive fine, gets similar mileage to the original, but occasionally idles a little rougher than the original. Also, this could well be my imagination, but my butt dyno doesn't think it pulls quite as hard as the original. The mechanic who did the swap drives a ZHP himself and is trustworthy. I told him my thoughts on the replacement motor and he suggested bringing the car in for an ECU reflash to ensure the latest version. My question is whether this is likely to have any effect if the currwnt software seemed to work fine on the former engine? I never noticed the 3000 rpm dip that others have complained about, and I still don't notice it. I bought the car with 87k miles and just feel it had a bit more oomph with the original motor.

If it doesn't have the latest DME update I'd say yes, minor improvements could be felt. Mainly in daily driving. You won't see huge improvements

Recently had my DME flashed up to the latest, and although it removed the 2,800 and 4,000 stumbles, my butt dyno did not detect any performance improvement.

I guess the follow-on question for me is, since the mechanic says he would charge me $175 for the reflash, would that money be better put toward a Shark reflash, or is it important to get the latest DME update before adding the Shark? I'm sure this has already been answered many times and I apologize for not doing the research this time.

If you can find yourself a constant voltage battery charger, then I can do it for you for free the next time I'm in the area...

I would think you'd need the most up to date BMW DME flash before doing shark

And no farewell!? Hope you love it there. We were there for a Long weekend recently and really did. Stayed at a B&B downtown.

Stayed at a B&B downtown.I wish I'd had time for a farewell, but this move has been much harder than we anticipated. Hardly got to say goodbye to anyone. But yeah, it is really beautiful here. My next door neighbor is BMW powertrain engineer for 20 years. I'll be spending some time with him today.

Wow. That's cool. Hope you are getting settled in.

I unplugged my DISA wire (again) today and I swear it runs worse through the 3500-4500 band. Drove about 2.5 hours round trip out to the Appalachian Trail access point off I-66--mostly back roads with a stop to do a 5mi hike with wife, dog and boys.

I'll leave it off for a bit longer and see what happens.

Again this is probably available info, but what is the goal of unplugging the DISA wire? Will that cause something to reset?

It actually drove a bit better when i had to go run a few errands this afternoon. I'll keep monitoring and report back.

I understand it will disable the DISA, but why would one want to do that? To overcome a faulty DISA, or something else? Just trying to figure out how that ties into my issue.
