This thing is just about to released. Shows a ton of promise - finally, wireless CarPlay in an aftermarket head unit! But - no volume knob (what is Alpine thinking??), eye-watering price (even after hefty discount). Will this fit an E46 without taking a Sawzall® to the dash? The head unit sits at the bottom half of the screen, unlike the stock unit, where it protrudes backwards from the top

Another plus: capacitive screen. The recent Sony CarPlay receiver inexplicably has a resistive screen, a huge downgrade and will eventually have durability issues.

You will need an adapter similar to this one to get it to fit. It definitely won't fit as well as an EONON or AVIN AVANT2, but if Carplay is what you are after, this is the way to get it.

That sucks. Price and Android support were nice pluses for the Sony.

I'm waiting for one of the receivers that allow both carplay and android auto.

Shame Parrot killed this..

The cosmetics are nice with the adapter bezel as shown above, so it passes that test.. and I suppose I could live with the lack of volume control, if they can integrate it with the steering wheel controls. Perhaps someday I will take the plunge.

[QUOTE=derbo;535479]I'm waiting for one of the receivers that allow both carplay and android auto.

I just installed a Pioneer AVIC 8200 NEX that has carplay and android auto, plus a lot of other stuff. It's a standard size double din which means you'd have to make room for it behind the dash by removing part of your heater box. Looks like a PITA, but it really wasn't that bad and it was worth the hassle. I considered the Apline head unit, but other than offering a wireless CarPlay connection, it doesn't do much else.

Review here...

http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/08/20/review-alpines-ilx-107-is-the-first-and-best-aftermarket-wireless-carplay-receiver

Lots of disappointment here for me. 1) no volume knob. 2) No HD radio support (how is this possible in 2017??). 3) No Sirius XM support. 4) Hokey Bluetooth mic.

So much potential here, and many other things they got right. My ideal solution would be:

- no CD/DVD transport, and as a result, very shallow size - solves mounting issues in a LOT of cars, including ours and E39's
- MUST have volume knob, and second select/tune knob would be nice too
- integrated Bluetooth mic, plus better external mic built-in doesn't cut it in your car
- HD radio & Sirius support

If something comes along with all/most of the above, I'd be on it like a hobo on a ham sandwich. I'm very spoiled by the modern infotainment my Golf R has, and don't want to settle for something half-baked at this point.

I put the alpine ILX-207 in my e39 m5. The sound is incredible and apple car play is excellent.

Please do reviews when you all install these CarPlay devices, I really want to upgrade from my eonon5150

I wish parrot wouldn’t have killed their effort, it looked so nice.

Edit: that alpine unit is fairly expensive, sheesh

Has anyone installed the 207? I see that Alpine has an E46 specific model but that is available only in Europe. (iLX-702E46)

I wonder if it would be compatible with a US car.
