View Full Version : Maybe the Worst Rotors Ever

So my friend stops by last week with the E36 that his nanny drives and tells me that something sounds really bad with the front wheels. The nanny neglected to tell anyone that there was a hee-haw horrendous grinding coming from the front end.

I can hear right away that something is horribly wrong with the passenger front wheel. I pull the tire and am shocked to see that the inboard brake pad is gone-- just metal on metal-- and it was driven that way for so long that it had ground the inside of the rotor down by several millimeters. We're talking like beyond dangerous.

So we ordered up some rotors and pads from ECS, and I did the job today. Figured I'd share some pics so everyone could share in my disbelief:

Check out THAT lip!

Comparison with drivers side rotor. Look how far it's ground down.

Oh, and to add to the fun, I snapped my 6mm hex head socket getting the rotor hat screw out AND the passenger caliper was seized.

A real fun fest!

I saw my neighbor changing his brakes the other day, and his rotors were worn all the way thru the rotor and the non-existent pad was actually rubbing against the vented portion in the center... Simply unbelievable.

Wow.

A friend of mine once wore hers down so much her brakes failed... in her 5-6000lb conversion van... while going downhill. Needless to say, the van ended up in the trees. Boggles my mind how people could let such an awful noise slide.

People who own cars and put something like brakes off to the side because they: a) Don't want to spend the money or b) don't know what the noise signifies blow my mind.

I have a buddy who has a slow leak in his driver front on his Elantra. Last night he refused to pull over and fill it up because we were already moving (And he hates backseat drivers). When we got out, it was flat as could be. I can't believe he doesn't have the $18 to fix the bead seal. I mean he bought an air compressor so he could deal with a slow leak...just scary...

Try having the metal disappear on non vented rotors. So it was pad on pad.

It's stories like these that make me glad my car has a very high safety rating and why I always check the rear-view mirror at abrupt stops.

I know a lady who has to pump her brakes to stop because her master cylinder leaks. Scary! Too lazy or cheap to have it fixed, I guess.
