Hello everyone! My name is Damon, I bought my zhp June 20th 2016 right after my 18th birthday. It's black and has 92k miles. I have under body rust I need to address:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/e460abc0410719fa5851f0e568c8e57e.jpg

Now I'm not too concerned about this because it doesn't seem to be affecting the actual body of the car but rather the rear subframe and misc. parts.

I would want to either replace it or do this to it:

Ok now the worst:
Body rust. I have some under the rear tail light and some above the rocker panels. This is what I'm most worried about. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/8802de4c38fa1e078b17ebea1a87e991.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/4119b24f06c6bc517ef9a0f500ec9b25.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/76af8c61d161218072bc5b188da5233a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/f574f751eb07abae5df62d6d19d3de43.jpg
Here's a quote I got from a very good body shop. This includes welding in a new piece below the tail lights and then paint matching surrounding areas. 3000 dollars! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/e7150248c3cdfccc0c89f5e18a5c5489.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170529/661cd1d7ab7abe2210580cd88f199857.jpg

First, welcome aboard! You'll hopefully love this place.

Second, I don't know much about addressing rust so I'll let more knowledgeable members offer advice.

welcome!

the undercarriage stuff - that's not terrible. i wouldn't bother unless you're planning to drop everything and refresh bushings and mounts.

the body rust - first off, that quote does seem quite excessive. i would get a few more quotes. the rear bit under the taillight is pretty bad - when that gets ground down, there will be holes, so yes, new metal will need to be welded in there. the bits under the RF fender and under the door - it's hard to say what will be left underneath, but i imagine with that bubbling action under the fender leg there will be at least some pinholes. the fender and sideskirt would need to be removed to clean that up. not a difficult job to remove.

if the fender itself is OK, you could perhaps offer to R + R the fender, sideskirt and rear bumper for the bodyshop so that you don't have to pay them to do it.

or..... you could drive it and enjoy it as-is and not worry about it. :)

Yes! welcome aboard. I too have a spot here and there. I have not looked into options yet. But I hear, the sooner, the better.

So my car is not doomed? I worried about putting all of this money in the car and have the unbeatable rust

Welcome Damon. What Peter (Slater) said. My undercarriage is a bit like yours and I had some spots on a fender and under boot lid I had repaired. Get a few more quotes. I found a local guy who works out of a mobile shop (blow up paint booth) and does repairs for new car dealers. He is very reasonable if I pay cash.

Best to get that stuff addressed quickly.

Not contributing to the rust questions, but it's good to see another 'Sconnie on the Mafia. I'm in Madison.

I am planning on attending the state chapter of the BMWCCA (Badger Bimmers) annual car show next Saturday (June 3) at BMW Milwaukee North. Let me know if you plan to attend.

Welcome! My undercarriage looks a lot like that (phrasing). I'll try to document my rust removal as well as possible, and maybe it'll give you some ideas in the process.

I was thinking about replacing the subframe with a rust free used one, and doing reinforcement, bushings, lsd at the same time. Hopefully...

I didn't even know? I may swing by with my car, I'll let you know. Maybe I can get my airbags replaced?

The predicted weather Saturday is shite and more shite... meaning rain. I'm going to watch the skies before making the 1.5 hour drive to MKE in the ZHP convertible. I'll let you know.

Oh, you'll probably need a service appointment to get the airbag recall work done... not a typical walk in job.

For sure! I don't suppose you know how to code bmw's? I wanna do some mods but don't feel like going the whole mile

I didn't make it over to MKE on Saturday. Hopefully we can arrange a Wisconsin ZHP GTG sometime!

+1 for a ZHP meet up near MKE. I just put a deposit down on a ZHP today and will be back joining the family for the 3rd time since 2012. Couldn't be more excited.

It's no joke, these things are addicting.:roundel

Interesting...the fog light trim appears to be painted body color.

There might be more rust lurking elsewhere, just not bad enough to cause the paint to bubble yet.
I would considering getting another example before spending a ton of money on it.

I’m a bit late but, Welcome!

I purchased my 2003 CPO in the end of 2006 and it was my DD for six years in Northern Ohio. With that said, I do have a few spots of decay. They’ve been there for years and haven’t grown excessively but, I have been in Tenn @ and Bama for the last six years.

Keep the scab and area around it waxed it it may help. A little WD-40 (water displacement -40) may help but it attracts dirt.

Like others said get more quotes. Body shop folks think their a gift and deserve outrageous money. They don’t.
