I am planning ahead for future maintenance on my car and in need of your expertise. Regarding the rear differential mounts, which brand do you recommend? Other than the original OEM, are there others you have used and recommend. As you know my coupe is stock and will mostly serve as a DD with some spirited driving now and then.

Thanks!

I went with OE bmw. Lemforder is the same thing without the bmw logo.

Others have gone with poly bushings.

So you went with the OE BMW? My car is @ 56K and would like to replace the originals with something that will last longer, if that's even possible. Although keeping it OE has it appeal. Thanks !!

About 1 month ago I changed all the bushings and went with Lemforder. Quality seem to be good and I didn't have any problems with installation. Plus I saved a lot of money going with Lemforder parts.

I have a Koch tool for rent that will help with the large bushing. It will do the other two if you drop the subframe. It also works on RTABs (while your in there...).

Man, I wish I was mechanically inclined and my hope is that I will learn enough here to get out of my comfort zone. I've worked on my other cars but no on a BMW. I admire those of you who perform your own maintenance projects. Kudos

It's one of the easiest cars to work on. With all the help here and in other DIYs. It's like paint by numbers (and you get to buy more tools!).

I wasn't comfortable to do this job as well. But after spending sometime on forums and with the help of Shawn's tool changing bushings wasn't hard at all. It's definitely a DIY project. The only problem I had is to dropping exhaust.

I thought this was a really hard DIY.

In the sense that you did it and found that it was really hard, or that you had come to believe it was really hard?

^clarification would be appreciated.

I should note I could not (and did not) swap two two forward diff bushings as the tool I have won't fit in the space without dropping the subframe.

I never did it but the DIY I saw were really involved and included dropping the Subframe.

No need to drop subframe. I didn't even remove the exhaust.

Any info on this second tool? My exhaust is rather rusty, and I don't want to drop it until I'm ready for a system overhaul, but I'd like to do my bushings later this summer.

I'm pretty sure it's this one. There is a guy on e46f that rents it out.

On my first E46 ('01 330i) I had Powerflex bushings and that included the diff mounts and sub-frame mounts.

I felt the car was definitely more solid in the back and felt I was getting better response to throttle. No squeaks developed since the two year or so I had gotten the job done along with sub-frame reinforcements.

I believe I had street bushings for the sub-frame points and the diff mounts were black (race)
