Hey guys,

I bought a 2004 ZHP sedan two weeks ago in CA (where i'm from) and drove it to Boston where I live and work (MIT). The trip was 3500 miles and my friend and I completed it in two days, but that's another story.

The story behind the car is: I have wanted a ZHP for the past 8 years, since I was 14. Something about the sedan, 6MT, refined look and no crazy flashy features. Just a solid car..

So I found a good looking car in CA, had a friend (BMW tech) inspect it, and bought it within hours of him posting it on CL. $8k, 110k miles. We then overhauled the cooling system (which had an expansion tank from 2003!) right before the cross-country drive). I also replaced the FCAB, which were literally severed upon inspection.

My plan for the car is to build a streetable track car, with a strong emphasis toward track. I don't like compromising, but I do need to drive this to work (10 miles) when I can't ride my motorcycle. In the immediate future I want to stiffen the frame, source track wheels/tires, install a full coilover kit (pss vs KW vs ...?) and possibly a big brake kit, but I am unsure of that yet.

I replaced the headlight lenses, tail lights, side markers and shift knob.

I'll leave a few photos for now, an hopefully will have something more exciting to show soon.

Ya the trip was great. Nice to have my buddy come along too. I went from SF to SLO, to ABQ (to pick him up) then we made a straight shot to Memphis, stopped at Central BBQ for some dinner and drove straight thru NYC to Boston from there. ABQ to BOS was straight through only stopped for food and gas.

Made very good time from ABQ to Memphis, we didn't see many cops and cruised 120-140 for about 900 miles. Surprisingly, no tickets over the whole trip.

Worst part was driving through blizzards in Tennessee and New Jersey on Bridgestone S-04..

Wow two days to cross the country is impressive. And 120-140mph for 900 miles is downright scary - wow! I guess you had good long straight away highways to cruise on. How did it feel at those speeds?

Wow two days to cross the country is impressive. And 120-140mph for 900 miles is downright scary - wow! I guess you had good long straight away highways to cruise on. How did it feel at those speeds?

The car felt planted and safe, but another 10 mph would have changed that. I've noticed this on the W212 E63 as well; 140-170 feels pretty safe but anything above, even by 10 mph is a whole different story. Maybe something about the air starting to lift the front end in a different manner. Anyway, the car felt great and was less twitchy than I thought it would be, so we decided to make good time and go for it.

Driving on summers in thin layers of snow with black ice under every overpass was very scary, even at 35 mph. I hit a large patch of ice on a turn and must have rotated the car 30 degrees, thankfully TC was off and it actually let me correct, otherwise it may have tried to brake and made the situation even worse.

Got my D4 and 75W90 and I'll be doing my trans/diff service this Saturday when I have access to my lift.

Also started peeling my pillar felt off...

My matte black kidney grilles finally came in and installation was very easy. My OEM grilles were looking pretty beat up, so I was very happy with the change.

I also got around to my differential and transmission fluid change. The difference in feel in the 6MT before/after D4 ATF was not as noticeable as I had expected, bit was in fact noticeable. The car shifts into first much smoother than before. The work was pretty effortless since I had a full lift. Didnt have to remove a single cover plate or obstructing part, which I was kind of expecting, so that was nice.

Having the car up on the lift also showed me that I have a big screw embedded in my rear right sidewall...not sure what to do about that. It is tangent to the tire, not sticking directly into it. Forgot to take photo.

It made it shorter but not a drastic change. Just enough to notice and make it more enjoyable. Definitely an OE+ mod.

Plus the cost of it is alot cheaper then a full ssk system. Iirc I spent under $100 on all the parts when I did this mod on the wife's zhp.

In NJ you go to jail for 100 mph and above.
The MPH limiter kicks in at 150mph above that exceeds the aerodynamics of the car ( according to BMW). I've done sustained 140 mph when my car was pretty much stock. It was very smooth but you really have to pay attention. I don't think I'll be doing that again any time soon.
That must of been scary as hell going through the snow. I got stuck in a snowstorm in the PA mountains on Dunlop star specs and I was shitting bricks.
Great to see the ZHP getting immediate love.
I'm running a 3 clutch LSD from Diffs online. Works very well. I think the ramping is 60/90

Yeah snow on summers is definitely scary.

Could you provide some specific details about your diff, your decision on that specific model, and the mechanical/driving attributes you were looking for and your driving style? Looking to pull the trigger before the racing season starts in ~3 weeks

I bought it that way from another member. 3 clutch can take more HP and I'm running a supercharger so 3.15 is good for me. If I remember right, the ring and pinion are polished as well
For track use, certain types of LSD's turn onto open end diff when lifting a rear tire around a turn. Something to think about if you are a serious tracker.
I'd call Dan at diffs online and pick his brain about what to use for your needs.... he's one of the best out there... he builds all of Turner's diffs too.

+1 for Diffsonline.

I've been running Diffs from Dan for a few years now and haven't looked back since. He's the quintessential BMW differential expert and has support unmatched by any other manufacturer I know. In addition to his kickass knowledge and support, you are supporting a US based company that manufacturers their product guess where - right here in the USA.

Spare yourself the headache of shopping around and exploring other options. If you want a differential that performs to your needs/liking, and performs well, and that won't give you any headaches, then he is the way to go. He'll build a diff based on your needs

I run a 4 clutch setup with 35/60 ramps.

Not loving the look of this tow hook, but it was cheap and I want to have something while on track. Yes, I know it's purple.. I like that you gave them a shower.

All wheels deserve a good shower. They had an 1/8 thick layer of jet black grease buildup on the inside drum.

The wheels are off an E53 X5 so they're the right size and almost the same offset as stock ZHP wheels.

I want an impact wrench really badly as well. A nice oneeeeeeee.

What models are you looking at? The DeWALT XRT 20V looks nice but its pretty expensive, I think $400 for the drill, bag, two batteries and a charger. 1/2" drive. DeWALT also has a nice, cheaper 18V impact gun, I think 3/8 drive.

Bosch makes a nice model in that same price range.

I think I've settled on what coilovers I want and it would be nice to have it for that as well.

First impressions of the Direzza DZ102 tires is they hook surprisingly well and give lots of control while drifting, more than I expected. I think they're pretty well matched to the car's power level for sustained sliding in the dry, anything grippier seems less than ideal.

I've always been a fan of BBS LM, but I also like the ARC-8 (only with concavity!!!) and other APEX styles. So I was super happy to find a product that has a weird combination of the LM barrel/face/lip, but also fewer spokes like the ARC-8 or EC-7, instead of a basketweave. And of course, hyper silver and fairly light is a good selling point...I'll weigh all four (lab grade scale at work!) and let you guys know how much they weigh.

Deep Lips on those wheels.

Yeah, like LM but I prefer the unpolished, single surface finish style of these. I believe the lip on my wheels will be the same as the front wheels on the ///M2. The FL-5 comes in medium and deep lip, I guess.

Never mind on the PSS, decided I wanted something better for track and grippier for street. Got a great deal on Falken RT615K ($500 shipped for 4 235/40-18).

In the mean time, I decided to paint my mesh grille this weekend. After taping up around the lower air dam, I lined everything with newspaper, and slipped newspaper in behind the mesh grille so no paint reached the radiator. I think it came out really well.

I originally bought these:

https://groundcontrolstore.com/collections/e46/products/bmw-e46-non-m3-track-school-full-coilover-kit

Over the years, I replaced the springs with swift coilover springs to increase the spring rate to 448lbs/560lbs/in Front/Rear respectively.

The setup is a very sound coilover system that has wonderful tameness for daily driver with limited rebound adjustment for HPDEs. My original intent when I first purchased these was 99% daily driving + 1% HPDEs. The purpose of the car obviously did not reflect the original intent and has steered itself a little further down the HPDE line.

Since my ZHP is merely a garage queen with HPDEs, I am considering overhauling my suspension with MCS 1-ways or 2ways. :)

If you want to go with GC, you seriously can't go wrong. It is a great setup and I really appreciate its ability to be usable on the streets. In comparison, my cousin's ZHP has turner motorsport coilovers and it was far from comfortable as a daily.

They don't make that kit anymore, but it is similar to this.

I went with 18x8.5 et35, should be a fairly aggressive fitment, but less so with 235 with stretched sidewalls. What tires are you referring to?

Yeah, I hear you. My plan is MCS 2WNR as well, with Vorshlag camber plates. Just not sure when that will happen. $4800 is a lot all at once... But on track the stock suspension, which has been refreshed recently, just doesn't stand a chance. Planning 600 lbf/in front, 700 lbf/in rear for the MCS

Mileage: 118,400 miles

Oil change and filter replacement, I went with Redline 15w50 and MANN

Transmission fluid change with Redline D4 ATF. I had three track days on the old fluid and it was GROSS, although only 1000 miles

Got as much power steering fluid out as possible, refilled with D4 ATF. My reservoir kept blowing fluid everywhere during hard track days. Not sure what was in there

Differential fluid change. The diff came with 75w90. Then upped it to 75w110, still too thin. Trying 75w140 now

Got my smoked tires off my drift wheels and mounted my new rubber, $60 each on amazon!

Drove it a little...

APEX FL-5 18x8.5 ET35 will be here Thursday, tires are already here. Hopefully get the new setup on the car on Friday. Planning fender roll and additional spacers, but thats for another time

I am 1/16" away from hitting the B pillar. I used VAC Motorsports pegboard and OMP side mounts. Went pretty smoothly except my seat is SO FREAKING LOW I cant see a damn thing. I gained 4 inches of headroom. The ZHP steering wheel also does not angle down far enough so it isn't pointed at me...I'll have to raise the seat.

I've got another 1/4 inch that the whole seat/side mount assembly can slide toward center so thankfully I'm good there. Does seem like a big seat for the car, though. Fits me perfect and bought from someone for $300 discount after it didn't fit them ;)

I moved the seat up 3/4" and forward about an inch and it fits great with good drive-ability. Only issue is the steering wheel still doesn't tilt low enough to point at my chest, it's just a touch higher than that, which is slightly uncomfortable. I'll see how it feels on the track this week. Have yet to decide whether I want to raise the seat or modify my steering column to get the right fit.

Josh, if you haven't already I highly recommend the Milwaukee impacts. I use and abuse mine literally every single day on a daily basis at work and home. I have Milwaukee's smallest 1/2 impact rated at 220ft ibs which has only let me down maybe 5 or 6 times out of the THOUSANDS of lug nuts I've removed at the dealer. Not only that, I use it for suspension work, removing reinforcement panels, you name it. I love the fact its in there 3/8 body so it's much, much lighter then the bigger bulkier 1/2 guns which means easier to fit it in wheel wells and such. Plus its just less weight in your hand.

You might be asking yourself why I was un successful taking off those few lug nuts in the past, well sometimes previous "technicians" think they can flat rate things and just blast on customers wheels with there air impact gun which is probably rated at 300ft pounds, more likely even more.

Best part about the gun is it has 3 different impact speeds, I break lug nuts loose with the full rated 220ft pounds, but for tightening them I put it in speed 2 which tightens them to about 70ft pounds, the perfect amount before setting the car back on the ground to torque everything properly.

Milwaukee has a 5 year warranty too!

Nice job with the build man hope to see the car again eventually,

-Kevin (yes that Kevin)

Alright guys, I decided to make a change with my wheels. Hopefully this fitment info is helpful to some people.

I had my front fenders and rear quarter panels rolled and pulled out what seems to be about 20mm.

Wheel setup:
APEX ARC-8 17x9 ET30 Race Silver
Bridgestone RE-71R 255/40-17 (sticks out 6mm from wheel faces)

This setup is equal to adding a 36mm spacer front and a 32mm spacer rear

I had rubbing issues, and have gone back and forth between test drives and my body shop to get all the kinks worked out. It's looking pretty good now and has nearly no rubbing.

The bumper did follow the quarter panel for the most part. I think I am currently hitting the tab. I'm going to use some of the bonding agents we use at work (aerospace applications, crazy f'ing strong) to bond two small aluminum blocks with threaded holes in them, one on the bumper one on the quarter. Then link them with a tiny adjustable turnbuckle, all on the inside. Going to do the same on the front. I will post a schematic when I get it designed.

In other news, the tires and width produce an absolutely insane cornering force, nothing i've ever felt

the AKG mounts are two pieces; poly with a metal sleeve. according to vince, the load from the subframe does not transfer correctly to the RACP in that scenario. the solid aluminum mounts are one-piece and since they are effectively "one" with the subframe, they transfer load correctly to the RACP.

it's a bit over my head, but i'm not an ME like he is. i think i can see what he means though.

all of this is not to say the AKG mounts are bad - but if you're looking for maximum performance and protection, the aluminum are the way to go. since i locked down the rear end with the VinceBar and VinceSkinz, it just made sense to do it. the car feels pretty darn tight back there, without feeling 'racecar' - it just feels 'expensive.' :)

OK cool thanks for the explanation, I get it now. I am also an ME practicing in the aerospace field, and I can't say I agree with his concern of the load path through a bi-material item like the AKG sleeved bushings, but I will look into it. Thanks!

Well I can't really say for sure. Material wise, there is no reason they would be different in load path and load transfer, and our structural engineer agrees. But these things are usually highly dependent on load direction, contact area from nuts/bolt heads, other finer details of load path that take time to research. So I'll trust what has been stated above.

I think what Vince and Peter are trying to say is the AKG solid contact area against the subframe mounting points is only the size of the inner sleeve since the rest of the bushing is flexible. On a solid mount you have the entire bushing acting as a solid contact area against the mounting point...

Hey dude, great thread, and great progress on the car.

Did you put those poly bushes in for the diff yet? Curious if you get any gear whine afterwards. I was contemplating poly there but went with OEM, still wonder if I could've done the poly without any gear noise in the cabin.

Did you get adjustable camber plates up front? Those will make a huge difference on track. Will take your negative camber to almost -3 and you'll love it.

Definitely. Would love to check out your car and bench race a little (I used to run with COMSCC.)

Hey, thanks. They are OEM. They will be AKG 75D in a few weeks though. I have differential whine on the highway already, but my car is gutted from the B pillars back, with an open trunk bulkhead.

Yes I got the Ground Control race versions with no rubber insulation. I'm going to be running close to -4 degrees up front. Also got the race mounts in the rear.

Cool!

The main advantage of what I am building is it will give me a gradient across each tire rather than a general tire temperature, which isn't super useful for tuning. I'm not familiar with the Hella system; does it give you a gradient?

Sockethead

Each tire is monitored for temp and pressure. The display shows a car with 4 "wheels". There is a button for scrolling through each wheel. It displays pressure and temp for each wheel as you scroll through. There is an audio and visual high/low alarm setting for pressure and a high temp alarm as well. It's a very sophisticated unit... I guess since all cars now come standard with TPMS, there was no market for it.
The problem is finding the replacement sensors... I have a couple of leads on the internet and a local place that says they can scan it and get the right sensors but I have to put my car back together and run it over there...

Gotcha. So they do not show a temperature gradient, they show a single temperature for each tire? My goal is to have a temp profile across the tire width so I can tune my suspension angles. The average temp of the tire would be more or less unchanged as a result of these changes, only the lateral temp distribution would change.

I would be interested to play around with the system you are talking about

It's kinda a moot point. Looks like they discontinued the unit years ago judging by the lack of information on the internet. The unit I have is still instilled in my car.... the base unit/receiver is under the center console and the head unit is mounted in the ashtray... otherwise, I'd just send you the whole thing.

What suspension setup are you running in that last pic? and are you running 30 ET 17x9.5 wheels with 255's square?

On stock wheels with 10mm spacer and stock camber I was getting rub inside the front fender (like UP inside the fender on the splash shield) on some corners that compressed the suspension (e.g. hard left hander with a dip in the middle of it). I'm on original stock 136k suspension though.

No rubbing issues in the front or rear under hard cornering?

If I remember right you've got an aggressive fender roll in the rear.

Hey, the setup is 17x9.5 et23 front 17x9.5 et30 rear, 255-40-17 square but they are r888r so they measure more like 265. Thats equal to running a 48mm spacer in the front with the stock wheels, so it's pretty aggressive

The suspension setup is MCS 2-way dampers and ground control race mounts everywhere, delrin bushings everywhere, -3.5 degrees camber front -2.3 rear

Stock spring rates are roughly 150 I think? and I'm at 750, so that helps a lot. No, I don't get any rubbing at all

My fenders are rolled very aggressively all around. The car is about 3.5" wider than it was before

I was curious because I have the same setup (looks like Bimmerbrakes gen3 headers) but I replaced the bare X pipe with and X pipe muffler.
Mine sounds good until I hit the upper RPMs. The rear muffler seems to be too restrictive for the supercharger because it's a single 2.25" outlet at the Y for the tips. It makes a god awful noise...

I don't like the fit on the second cross brace either. I get a rattle there.

Thanks, yes I dropped the whole front end including bumper, rad, k member subframe and oil pan. You also need to take the whole front cover off to access the oil chain tensioner install location. so water pump and crank comes off.

I'm not sure what he added to the tune. smoothed out the 4k power dip and added a good bit of power everywhere, and it has WAY better response (stock response is atrocious)

I've always primed the oil pump on any rebuild I've done that involves the oil pump. I even had a tool I made for Ford V8s that went down the distributor shaft to the oil pump drive gear. I'd spin that baby with a drill and whatch the oil pressure gauge go to 80 psi without the engine running :)
Sounds like not priming the pump worked out for you though...

The reason the rest had to be removed was because I replaced the whole pump with a different one, not just the shaft. So the whole cradle had to come off and the sprocket was a new one, did not reuse the original. Front engine cover has to come over to access location for adding oil chain tensioner, which these cars do not come with
