View Full Version : Can stock dual mass flywheel be resurfaced?

Hey Guys:

It's time to replace the clutch on my ZHP. Just bought the car w/ 90k miles, but it's needed because that's the way the car came.

I've read numerous e46 posts in equal amounts disagreeing whether the stock dual mass flywheel can be resurfaced or not.

Can the stock dual mass flywheel be resurfaced for the first clutch replacement as long as no shuddering upon takeoff from a standstill?

I'd like to hear from the mafia members here about your thoughts. Thanks!

i wouldn't. the stock DMF is a wear item - it has rubber dampeners that wear out. replace the flywheel with a new one if you're doing the clutch.

I'm pretty sure a sprung clutch conversion too would eliminate the chatter.

actually, it's a 20lb+ steel SMF that is supposed to be chatter-free. the crazy-light aluminum SMFs chatter.

i don't care so much about the chatter, i just don't want the vibrations and oscillations inherent in a worn DMF... dealing with it in the sedan now. valeo 6-speed steel SMF conversion will be interesting. :cheers

After driving Ray's '03 coupe (with an SMF conversion), I can say there is noticeable chatter. It's not super loud like my E30's 13-lb flywheel was, but it was still audible at a stop light. I believe his is a "lighter but not crazy light" flywheel.

Plus some other rattling going on inside the 'box. A little chatter is fine, I just turn up the radio.
