I have the low profile Harbor Freight aluminum jack which has held up well for 8 years of changing tires for autocross and track events. It was cheap, lightweight and I never get underneath a car with just a jack holding it, so I wasn't too worried about it 'failing'. It's similar to this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027VFZE6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=zhpcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=B0027VFZE6
I noticed it was on sale just a couple months ago in a Harbor Freight ad for $59.99. If you browse the web or check your automotive magazines for coupons, you might find it cheaper.
I also use a big 3-ton jack for changing tires on the X5. I like to use that beast to jack up the entire side of the X5. If you don't have a larger vehicle, the HF jack will do for you and will raise one side on a zhp.

I have this Craftsman 3 ton jack and stands set minus the creeper. I got it for Christmas - purchased for me around 1999(?) based on the Craftsmans name and warranty.
When/if I need it to - it barely gets under the front/rear ends on the Xi. Probably wouldn't work on lowered cars. Almost all of the time I resort to lifting at the jack pads.

I think I have the 3.5 ton version of this (I couldn't find) that was purchased around 2002.

Also using an Arcan XL 3.5 ton low profile. Picked it up at Costco.
My floor jack weighs at least 100 lbs. Its a retired one from Discount Tire. It needed a spring and lube, I replaced it and lubed it up and its good as new, With a tape covered handle... sounds classy doesn't it?

Oh and screw the OEM jack.
I use the same jack as these two. The jack is absolutely and purely for the WIN.
It's extremely light, which is why I bought it. I put the jack in the car for every autocross event and track day. Doesn't make me break my back when lifting it out of the trunk, and is very easy to maneuver. It gets the job done, and I haven't found a need for the Quick Pump version of the jack because this one already is able to lift the car enough to change out tires/wheels within 5-6 pumps, which is few enough for me.
Best part, it was CHEAP, around the price these two mentioned.
I highly recommend this jack.

We have a Roush Racing jack.....funny because we own no American cars and never owned a Ford :shifty
Something like this
http://www.artracingshop.com/wp-content/uploads/aluminum%20racing%20floor%20jack.jpg
It works great, good for 7000lbs. It is extremely heavy though, I brought it over to a friends to do pads and rotors on his GLI this weekend, and when I put it in the trunk of my Jetta, the car seriously came down 2 inches....haha
We need an extra one though, one that is low profile as both my car and the M6 dont go under the Roush, unless you lift up on the car a bit. Most likely a Craftsman

Be sure to read the user reviews on Craftsman jacks (sears website) before buying one. Pretty poor reviews on pretty much all of them. I made the mistake of buying one last year but returned it because the handle wouldn't lay flat enough to get it underneath from the rear to lift at the diff support. Having said that, I use a 25 year old Craftsman that works great. I just wanted to get something newer. Still debating what to get since most of those lightweight aluminum jacks won't go as high as I want them to.

^ this. On the Craftsman jack I have the handle does not lay flat. It also takes many pumps to lift the car. That said I was not looking for a low profile, quick lift jack when I bought it. My jack serves the purpose, but if I would buy another it would not meet my specifications.

Alright, so I need some help. I bought a jack, and I think a few of you have it too, botond, eli, others. Anyway, it drops the car like a rock. I'm sure I can adjust this lowering speed, but how? Here is the jack. Came with bs instructions.

You need to be very mindful of how quickly you're lowering it. I can lower it like a granny or drop it like it's hot; I have that control.
Just be a little bit more mindful of how fast you're turning that lever.
I honestly never saw a problem with dropping it quick, to be honest. I always drop it as quick as I can so I could move on to the next wheel and finish swapping wheels in time for my first run. :biggrin

Drop it like NASCAR yo!
Practice the slow release by gently turning the valve. You may find a combination of both clockwise and counter-clockwise turns will allow for a smoother drop.

When I'm testing out new wheels, tires or spacers, I drop it slowly to make sure everything clears and nothing is going to scrape. Additionally, if the car is on jack stands, dropping it hard probably isn't the best idea.

For the jack stands, that's understandable. I was referring to just dropping the car on the ground.
Good idea on the wheels/spacers checking.

I have an old Craftsman floor jack that I use for lifting the rear. Wish I could find a new one just like it. I bought one of their aluminum ones but like I mentioned earlier the handle didn't lay flat enough to reach the rear diff brace.
For jack stands I have a set of AC Delco brand ones that I cut the top saddle off of so that they fit perfect into the jack point recesses.....
http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-ZHP-misc/IMG0666/1027688318_hHjWy-M.jpg
I use those on the rear and for the front I drive up on a set of Rhino Ramps. If I want to take off the front wheels I have a set of these that I use to lift it off the ramps.....
http://www.tractorsupply.com/vehicle-maintenance-accessories/jacks-stands-ramps/jack-stands/powerbuilt-reg-3-ton-jack-amp-jack-stand-1160455
http://media.tractorsupply.com/is-viewers-4.1/flash/genericzoom.swf?&serverUrl=http://media.tractorsupply.com/is/image/&contentRoot=/skins/&config=TractorSupplyCompany/TSCConfig4&image=TractorSupplyCompany/1160455_set&initialFrame=0
You can't really see it in their picture but there is a ratcheting type lock setup similar to what's on jack stands. I also have another set of plain old jackstands that I'd use for the front if I ever need to crawl underneath and have the front wheels off. Can't really see that happening too often though.
Right now though the Rhino Ramps are about an inch too short so I have to lift the rear just past level in order to get those hydraulic jackstands in the front jack points. I plan to modify the tops of those also to fit the jack point recess and so they are a bit shorter so that I can get those under the front without having to lift the rear first for those times when you just need to remove the front wheels. It takes me maybe 10 minutes to get all 4 wheels in the air. I'll have to get a pic next time I have it up in the air.

I just picked this up today since they were on sale for $79.99. Not quite as good of a deal, but still better than $100, and I need to get my winter wheels on in a few weeks. The cashier told me that I need to check the hydraulic fluid level since they don't have enough in them due to shipping. Has anyone had to deal with this before with their floor jack? Do I simply open the screws and add more fluid? What product should I expect to buy to top off with?

I think the statement was unwarranted opinion. Why would the jack manufacturer do this. I've never added a drop. I am sure the "owners manual" does'nt say.......

Bringing this thread back. My H.F. Jack failed me. 1. It slowly releases pressure. 2. The jack has some funky side torsion going on so two of the wheels lift off the ground as it jacks up. Never using it again. Also supposedly H.F. no longer has the forever warranty without a receipt. Never buying that sh*t from there again. With that said, what jacks are good and on sale at the moment?

I just got the Pittsburgh 3 ton heavy duty jack from Harbor Freight on sale for 79.99 last weekend. It's not the racing jack, but it just fits underneath the jack pad so I got the clearance. The lifting range starts at 5" so it just makes it. Plus I needed the 3 ton capacity because the wife's XC90 is a heavy one, real heavy.

Cool still on sale folks!
Edit: My car is stock so it's not lowered, if it was lowered this jack would NOT fit underneath.

Gotcha.....thanks. If I had a Costco anywhere nearby I would definitely go with theirs but the closest one is probably 400 miles away in Billings or the Twin Cities. Sears jacks don't sound much better than HF jacks these days judging by the reviews on their website. Plus on the one I bought and returned the handle wouldn't lay flat enough to reach the rear diff support. It's just hard to find a good jack these days for a decent price that isn't Chinese made.

I love TSC. Back when I was heavy into the fab world, TSC was my go-to for hardware. They sell everything by the pound, including grade 8. Best prices by lightyears.

I'm kinda late here, but I use a large three ton jack like tire places use. I do so because it lifts the car HIGH. And to me, that is hugely important. I have done so many DIY's on so many cars I can tell you there is nothing better than getting that car up as high as you can. 20" plus is best.

Is that a bottle jack and jack stand all in one? If they are good quality, that is an awesome product that I need to own. Why didn't I think of inventing that? Kind of like when I missed out on creating Band Aids with Neosporin already applied.... It's always something simple

3 ton. Here's how I modded the top to fit inside the jack point. No chance of them sliding out of position this way. Not that I feel you'd have anything to worry about with the stock design though. Plus doing this might make them less secure if you're using them on other vehicles. I have another set if I need them for something else.

I got the 2.5 Ton Steel jack from harbor freight recently. I used to have the Duralast version (they are visually identical sans the label) of that Aluminum Jack ^, but it broke after about a year, so I decided to go steel. My father has that aluminum jack also and his has not broken yet, so mine may have just been a fluke.
2.5 Ton, minimum height 2.75", and lifts to 20". I believe the Aluminum I had, and probably the Harbor Freight Version as well, went to a little over 14". The steel one is heavy though, not something you want to transport often or keep in your trunk.
$79, here. (http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/floor-jacks/25-ton-heavy-duty-floor-jack-with-rapid-pump-68049.html)

I bought a Michelin floor jack several years ago at Sam's. It has worked great for every car/truck I've owned except for the ZHP. I was lamenting having to spend money on a jack only for the BMW, when a buddy made a suggestion that saved me from that terrible fate:

I cannot get my jack under the sideskirts, let alone the jack pad and it is a super low height jack - how do you get a jack with the adapter under the car????

Is your car lowered more than stock? I have about 1/2" of clearance between the jack pad and the car. Try driving up onto some 12"x12" pavers or something.

One thing you can try is to kinda put the jack pad up into the slot with one hand, and maneuver the jack underneath it with the other. It BARELY fits on mine but it does.

I have a griot that has served me fairly well over the past year and a half. However, I was working on my e36 and after I lowered the car I noticed some hydronic fluid on the ground. Do you think that the seals are gone already on a year and a half old jack? Can I replace the seals on the jack?

I bought the 3 ton craftsman jack from sears a few weeks ago on sale for 79.99. I hated it. Not low enough at 5.5 inches of clearance needed (I should have known from the package, but it's the first jack that I've bought.) It was super jerky when lowering. It dropped far too rapidly for what I am comfortable with. Also took forever to jack up. I returned it today for a full refund.
I'm going to give this 2.5 ton low profile jack from harbor freight a try next. Pittsburgh Automotive - Item#68049. More maximum lift than the craftsman jack (20 in vs 19.25), but it needs only 2.75 in in clearance. On sale for the month of feb for 79.99. I just can't seem to justify the cost for an aluminum jack of at least 2.5 tons.

That looks like a pretty good setup. I need to measure and see how much the height is for the one we have at the house. Its low on fluid and neither dad or me can figure out how to put more in it. Right now it just barely gets the car up high enough to put on the big stands.

That's the exact jack (& deal) that I picked up a couple weeks ago! It works great, but the only downside is that it doesn't have the reach to get to either the front or rear center lift point. Other than that, I love it!
And point of clarification, this one is a steel jack, not aluminum.

I just bought this jack - for two reasons. One, it is low enough to go under the touring without me having to drive up onto RaceRamps. And it raises high enough to lift the X5
