Since my beloved e39 got a new owner, I want to introduce my new toy.
After having few ZHP's I knew what I wanted. 2 doors and third pedal.

Well, I found one. California car that came off lease in 2008 when the last owner bought it.
2005, TiAg with Black leather interior. Has 98k miles currently.
I like having my car in certain way and condition so I jumped on refreshing this ZHP.
Pile of new parts from RMeuropean.

Pile of old parts. Overhauled cooling system (water pump, tstat, expansion tank, hoses...), replaced control arm bushings, sway bar links and sway bar bushings, replaced belts, pulleys and tensioners, engine air filter and cabin filter, upper intake boot...

Oil change with my favorite oil.
https://s30.postimg.cc/rmg1jupf1/20170121_135210.jpg (https://postimg.cc/image/rmg1jupf1/)
Pretty clean under, no oil leaks.

https://s30.postimg.cc/50fbkv12l/20170124_085732.jpg (https://postimg.cc/image/50fbkv12l/)
Installed Eonon GA 6150 unit that I'm still tweaking.
https://s30.postimg.cc/lpgrgrxnx/20170124_183258.jpg (https://postimg.cc/image/lpgrgrxnx/)
Also replaced wipers with Bosch blades that come with the plastic spoiler.
https://s24.postimg.cc/egu3nrnsh/s_l1600.jpg (https://postimg.cc/image/egu3nrnsh/)
Did the airbag recall on Monday.
I'm expecting in mail new BMW Performance grilles, wheel spacers, Vanos from Dr Vanos, NGK spark plugs, car cover, floor mats...
Since I will be most likely going back to Europe for the time being, my plan is to take this ZHP with me and have it ready to ship in 2 weeks.
I'm still thinking if I should replace struts and shocks. Don't have any obvious problems but they do have 98k miles. For now I'm getting 4 new tires.
Future plan is to get M3 seats or maybe regular sport ones with lumbar in some fun color, like NB or cinnamon.
Better pictures to come!

Great job! I chose to keep two.... an 04 and 06. I'm interested in the head unit you chose and any feedback. Does that spoiler on the Bosch wipers work well highway speed? I never researched it much, but I noticed my wipers leave a patch right in the middle. Also, where'd you source the armrest cover? How "fun" was install? You've inspired me to keep pushing on mine!

Going to do a lot more. :)
I'm originally from Europe. I've been in California for the last 4 years and something and I absolutely love it here.
Girlfriend studies in Germany so that's the main reason for going back.
You can read more here about the unit - http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?19495-Eonon-D5150Z-7-quot&p=516086#post516086
I will post more details as I use it.
Decided to go with Bosch cause I know they are quality wipers. Car came with aftermarket wipers, also Bosch, call me crazy but I wanted to keep OE look with spoiler. Haven't tested they under the rain yet but they don't leave smears for now.
Link for the wipers - http://www.ebay.com/itm/351596274837?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Armrest cover was very fun indeed. I managed to get the leather cover on the armrest somehow. Installing it back in the car is where I wanted to throw it into the ocean. The damn thing just wouldn't close. Latch wasn't catching so I had to readjust whole thing more then few times until I got it right.
Link for cover - http://www.ebay.com/itm/181259190124?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Now I really have a bug in me to jump on this, Corsa TSE - https://www.amazon.com/CORSA-14559-Axle-Back-Exhaust-System/dp/B004UBUS5C/ref=pd_sbs_263_6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1DQZKEE4725FPZTS48TY
Light version. Don't want to go too crazy, just want to open it up and get a bit more throaty sound.
What do you guys think?

very cool - interested in seeing a ZHP go back to it's homeland! it would be awesome if you document the story. :)
re: the seats - M3 with heat, lumbar and bolster adjustment, no question about it. they are simply awesome and superior to the stock sport seats in every way (except being 'less sporty', LOL).
and congrats on the car! i LOVE TiAg... :cheers

I have M3 seats in my car (thanks to Slater) and it is by far the best mod...followed by the M3 steering wheel (with paddle shifters).
Going to do a lot more. :)

I can also vouch for the M3 seats -- I sat down in Peter's car last weekend and yelped STRANGER DANGER because someone was squeezing my sides. Those adjustable bolsters ain't no joke.
Now if only I can get my hands on an Alcantara set...

Thank you!
Good to know about the M3 seats. They are on the bucket list. Are the ones with lumbar and bolster adjustment plug & play or I need some extra wiring?
I'll try to document the whole trip experience. It will travel about 30 days on a ship until it reaches north of Germany. :)
San, I think I would be happy too with the exhaust.
Few updates.
Got wheel spacers fromPprecision European Motorwerks.
https://s27.postimg.org/7b3l8wkdb/20170125_114410.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/7b3l8wkdb/)
I went with 10mm on the front and 12mm in the back. Now that I have them on the car I think I should've gone with 12mm in the front and 15mm in the back.
Thoroughly cleaned the hubs, applied a layer of high-temp anti size.
https://s27.postimg.org/hqecvk6xr/20170125_120330.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/hqecvk6xr/) https://s27.postimg.org/oi4ryevxb/20170125_120544.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/oi4ryevxb/) https://s27.postimg.org/rvd0l4pi7/20170125_122811.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/rvd0l4pi7/)
And they fit perfect. No shakes or vibration. They seem like a quality product.
Left picture with spacers and right one without.

Few more. I also removed the M badge from the trunk. Got new 330Ci badge but I might leave it as is for now.

Got new tires from Costco. Michelin A/S 3+, $766 out of door for set of 4. Factory size.
https://s27.postimg.org/tgwvqop3z/20170125_195155.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/tgwvqop3z/)
And pair of new Xenon bulbs. Osram D2S Night breaker. PO had some cheap blue bulbs installed that were useless.
https://s27.postimg.org/6mzc3pb1b/20170125_124740.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/6mzc3pb1b/)
I also got a set of these projectors from TRS. I have AL adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights and they are great.
I retrofitted EVO X-R projectors in my e39 and they were brilliant in every way. I want to do something similar on this car as well.
These are the only projectors for facelift coupe that bolt on and don't require cutting and modifying the shroud.
Probably not as good as XR's but I might give them a try. Ideally I would go with FXR 3.0 projectors but those require a lot of work.
https://www.theretrofitsource.com/closeouts/bi-xenon-bosch-e46-replica-projectors.html
While installing the spacers, I noticed that my left rear shock is leaking so new rear shocks, and possibly front struts, are happening.
Now I can't decide between OE Sachs or Koni FSD's which are around $200 more.

spacers look good! one thing to note... and i'm not sure if you've looked into this yet, but when importing a car to germany i'm pretty sure any mods have to meet TUV approval. so you might be removing some stuff when you get there (like spacers).
ZHPizza
01-26-2017, 05:45 AM
Isn't it amazing how 10-15mm of spacers make the stance of the car so much more aggressive? As far as changing them out -- I think I remember seeing that 15mm in the rear will rub on OE wheel/tire sizes. Can anyone confirm?
And they're overpriced, but you may want to look into painted reflectors before you leave for Germany so you don't stand out (they don't have bumper reflectors over there): https://bimmian.com/Accessories-for-BMW/Painted/Exterior/Bumper-Reflectors/#tabs
You could also DIY paint them: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/touch-up-paint/related-spray-paint
Or replace them with a clear version -- then you'll stand out in a not-bad-looking way: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DEPO-00-03-BMW-E46-2D-Coupe-amp-Cabrio-01-06-E46-M3-Clear-Front-Bumper-Reflector-/172483175209?vxp=mtr
I have the clears, but haven't installed them yet. They're going to match the corners of the facelift coupe perfectly:

I believe Bimmian sells body colored ones.

They are completely plug-n-play.
That is great to hear!
I'm aware of TÜV and how strict they are. Like if they find a leaking shock, the car won't pass.
I can drive there on Cali plates up to 6 months before I have to import it.
I have front license plates but I'm not sure how to attach them without ruining the bumper. That's another thing to worry about even here in Cali.
Spacers make that much of a difference for sure. I think it should be fine with 15mm.
To blend reflectors with the bumper is on the list as well but bimmian ones are overpriced.
I plan to repaint the hood and do that at the same time but in Europe since it's much cheaper there.

Get a license plate mounting bracket that fits into the tow hook location. Other members that use them can chime in on good manufacturers.
If my bumper didn't already have the factory front plate mount (which is drilled into the bumper :facepalm), that is what I would use since Oregon is a front and rear license plate state.
Impression of those michelin a/s3+?
Costco prices are very competitive
Sreten
01-26-2017, 07:49 PM
Got a citation today while parked for not having front license plates.
I was thinking maybe some kind of magnetic license plate mount? The one that attaches in tow hook location seems fairly easy but it looks kinda ugly to me.
So far they are great. Car had Michelin A/S tires from 2012. A/S3+ definitely improved ride quality. Haven't given them a proper test but they are much quieter and soak up the bumps and holes much better, car is more comfortable. Will give a proper review after I put some miles on them.
I have to replace my rear shocks since the left one is leaking. Now I need opinions, should I spring for new Koni FSD kit or just get OE Sachs sport for the rear and don't touch the front struts? Front ones still feel good to me. OE Sachs kit (front and rear) is $200 cheaper then FSD's.

Yeah, not the fan that it sits on the side. Seems kinda out of place. Can you post few pictures if you have them on your ZHP?
Anyways, I pulled the trigger on FSD's.

Yes, very. I had it on my e39 as well.
This ZHP, my ex e39 and every other BMW that I owned, had Vanos rattle from 2000 to 4000 rpm.
I installed Dr Vanos on my e39 at 141k miles and other then the rattle that was gone, I didn't notice big improvement in performance that everybody is raving about.
I replaced just the seals on my first ZHP at 117k miles and it felt the same after. Granted, they do need some miles to break in.
I'll leave feedback on this one once I rack up some miles.

Yep that's still on the radar as well, I'll do more research when I get to that point. I guess it's about half the price of the Dr vanos, it just seems like a lot more work.

More work yes, but not undoable since you're already in there you get to use your own and you know how it's done vs the Dr. But, I've not heard any issues about that method.

I was thinking going Beisan myself.
But, Dr Vanos is $300 for the rebuilt unit, Beisan is $135 for seals, anti rattle bearings and soft vise jaws. You also need an impact wrench and swivel vise which I don't have.
I've done seals and they are not that difficult. Bearings on the other hand is more work and you have to be precise and get it 100% right or you risk losing performance. It's definitely doable but depends how much are you willing to commit.
Given all of that and much more needed time to rebuild it yourself, going with Dr Vanos made sense to me.
I was done with everything in about 3 hours and I took my time cleaning everything for reassembly whereas I would be probably losing half a day or more on the rebuild project.
On the other news, I'm negotiating for used UUC Corsa exhaust or should I say JUC. :biggrin

Anandoc, that I do. :)
Santa Barbara has great climate. Almost 80 degrees today!
Got Koni FSD's delivered today.
Very nice packaging.

Did the rear shocks. Old ones were completely shot, they were not returning at all when compressed.
https://s28.postimg.org/atixvvzzt/20170130_203631.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/atixvvzzt/) https://s28.postimg.org/lf2t7w6bd/20170130_195350.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/lf2t7w6bd/) https://s28.postimg.org/52sri5rzt/20170130_193254.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/52sri5rzt/)
Koni's came with new sleeves and bump stops. I also got JT Design rear shock mounts, reinforcement plates, gaskets and mount plates. That way everything is brand new.
First time I'm doing the rear shocks on e46 and it's fairly easy and quick job. A lot more easier when compared to e39 where I had to dismantle good portion of the car.
Tomorrow I'm tackling front struts.

Nice work! I would suggest you pay special close attention to where the spring sits on the front struts. I made the mistake of not having it oriented correctly and having to take the assembly apart and do it all over again on one side. Take a pic for reference before you disassemble it.

I'm very curious to know what you think of these. I did a clear lens swap and a little cutoff shield modding on the E46 projectors in my X3 and it made a world of difference. That's the route I was planning on for the ZHP, but for an extra $35 I might just go this route.

BMW Curves, thanks, I did! That was my biggest fear but it went smooth.
Got it done this morning.
https://s24.postimg.org/5n8rhbctt/20170131_104243.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/5n8rhbctt/) https://s24.postimg.org/wz8lwe6y9/20170131_122204.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/wz8lwe6y9/)
Reused stock springs. Installed new strut mounts with reinforcement plates, new bump stops, dust boots, washers...
Original struts were still good and operating fine when compressed. Probably could've gotten more miles out of them.
Got the alignment done later this evening and now the car is pretty tight mechanically and hopefully I'll leave it alone for the time being. :o
I've only done 60 miles but overall I'm happy with the ride quality. Suspension feels refreshed and tight, it soaks up bumps and potholes much better although I haven't felt a big change in the front suspension yet, I felt a big change in the rear end since I was basically driving on the springs.
While on the roll, got new trunk lid shocks installed.
https://s24.postimg.org/z52wqwaep/20170131_125410.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/z52wqwaep/)
And cleaned air ducts with this little product.
https://s24.postimg.org/vo0unxbch/20170131_165510.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/vo0unxbch/)
704sw, I haven't got around installing them but I'm also very curious. I talked to TRS and told them what I wanted and they recommended these as a bolt on replacement. Ideal would be to get FX-R 3.0 projectors but that requires a lot modifying as the fitment is nowhere near to original projector.
With the headlights being adaptive and moving in all sorts of directions I'm kinda sceptical about opening them and possibly make them worse hah.

More work yes, but not undoable since you're already in there you get to use your own and you know how it's done vs the Dr. But, I've not heard any issues about that method.
Very true my friend as it turns out.
While playing with ICV under the hood, I noticed big amount of oil on lower radiator hose.
I mean, a lot of oil! My oil leak free car was swimming in oil.:blink
https://s27.postimg.org/s44zqax7j/20170202_180648.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/s44zqax7j/) https://s27.postimg.org/41o5vfgkf/20170202_180735.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/41o5vfgkf/)
First thought was that I f**ked up big time when installing Vanos, though I am very pedantic when it comes to this and triple check everything as I don't like to do same job twice.
Cleaned everything up and checked the torque on Vanos bolts, all good. Fired up the car, oil still coming out.
Checked for leaks around Vanos gasket but it was dry. Started the car again and got under to find that it is leaking from this particular bolt.
Like dripping every 10 seconds from there!
https://s23.postimg.org/x4aiu63qv/20170202_180148.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/x4aiu63qv/)
Bolt was lose and after torquing it down, leakage stopped. 2 cans of break cleaner later and it was business as usual underneath.
Now, I know I didn't touch that bolt cause I had no reason to do so. Didn't even crossed my mind that I needed to check that.
Needless to say, I am very displeased with Mr Vanos and he shall receive critic.
Glad I could resolve it though. It would suck if I had to take valve cover off again.

ZHPizza, at first I wanted to go back to chrome but I'm liking the glossy look more and more.
Got another unexpected update.
Scored some M3 seats!
Not in perfect condition, actually pretty decent with no rips or big signs of use. Considering that they are heated with lumbar support, adjustable bolsters and that I paid $200 for both plus my old seats, I have no complaints! :cigar
They were dirty as hell but this is how they turned out after a quick treatment with Gliptone leather care.

Both switches are working, drivers seat switch is just missing the front piece with buttons and passenger just needs to be glued together. I transferred buttons from passenger side to drivers seat so I can use the bolster. Great stuff, really holds you firmly in the seat. ;)
Yeah CL, guy few hours from me is parting out M3 with 105k miles. He needed the engine so he's selling everything else.
He asked $300 for both, but lowered cause he took my seats and because of the missing switch. I had no time to sell my seats and around here people are usually asking anywhere between $500-1000 for the front M3 seats. Pretty sweet deal.
Was swapping xenon bulbs (can't decide between Night breakers and CBI) and right headlight stopped working.
Wires inside are dried out and crap. Quick fix though.

To get it on the road there will cost roughly the same amount of money. They are slapping me with stupid stuff on every corner, like 140 euros to empty my A/C system because refrigent R134a is banned, R134yf is the only one allowed but my car doesn't support that. 10% fees on shipping price and insurance that I'm already paying here in US.
After that I have to do homologation to get it to European standards. Like headlight washers are mandatory with xenon headlights.

Am I the only one unable to view these photos in full resolution? The thumbnails look great, but larger photos seem pixelated. Anyway, cheers to you! Sounds ship shape!

When they open in new window, you should be able just to click on them and see them in full resolution.
Anyways, I got an offer for the car from a forum member here. He should come and pick up the car this Saturday...

Congrats! I know it's bittersweet, but hopefully it'll be going to someone who will appreciate the work you've done and take care of it accordingly.

Let him keep pouring money into it due to our peer pressure and then you buy it back when you return. Well played.

He seems like a nice guy. After all I've done, he won't have to pour any money into it hah.
Besides thousands of dollars that I spent on parts, I just can't imagine how much would labor cost for all of this if I had some shop to do it.
Best 4 things that I've done on this car by far are:
- Putting Koni FSD's, they are amazing struts and balance the ride quality perfect. Driving on the highway is that much comfortable and it soaks up the road so smooth, and yet it feels very precise, sporty and firm when you push it on the back roads.
- Michelin PSS A/S 3+ great tires all around. Quite, comfortable and grippy when it's wet.
- Corsa exhaust. Lot of time I drive with the window down just so I can hear that marvelous sound. Right amount of sound in any given moment, when you push it gives that mean, sporty sound. While cruising on the highway you can barley hear it.
- M3 seats. It's been said already, but you can't even compare them to regular seats. Might be the best seats my butt has been sitting in. Leather is very nice and soft. No matter how fast you go into the corner, side bolsters hold you tight in your seat.
If I were to get another ZHP in not so close future, these 4 things are must. I know there are other great tires, but this setup works so well for me.

Thanks for the follow up on the FSD's. I've had them in other cars and am excited to know that they perform similarly in the ZHP. They're the best kind of wizardry.

very cool. i feel the same about the M3 seats w/ adjustable bolsters, and the michelins. after nate here blabbing on about the awesomeness of the FSDs, and now your experience... i gotta try some of these!
think of this whole experience as a blessing in disguise - when you're in germany, you'll be able to find some cool cars that we can't get here! like a 330iT M Sport!

Yeah, FSD's definitely won me over. I came from e39 with M sport suspension and that thing is a mile muncher, it does everything, comfortable on highway and great in corners. I can now compare ZHPs ride quality with e39s easy. I hate driving bumpy and feel every small bump on the road. FSD's transformed car in that way. Comfort is very important to me.
I am looking at what could I get over there that's similar to ZHP but not much to pick from. I really want a Coupe and there just aren't any. Ton of diesels though.
Honestly, I'm not sure if I have a desire to do all of this again. This here for me is a perfect ZHP and has everything that I want.
Not the biggest fan of wagons. :D
But since we touched the subject of wagons, my first 2 cars were wagons, both the same just different color. Something you can't get here.
Thought I share few pics.
I give you the Lancia Lybra. Both had a special package called Intensa.
This one was in Grigio color.

Those are almost identical to the seats we had in our X5. I wish they were available here... the alcantara trim is interesting...

Yeah interesting car. He is asking close to $16.500 and I don't plan on spending that much.
It's like Spenser's, Estoril Blue, my favorite color with Monte Carlo Blue. :)
Been chatting up with the guy. There are few thing I don't like about it. Like it's on lowering springs and I hate that. Has a big rear spoiler and front splitters that don't look so good but they are the part of M ClubSport package and how the car got out of factory but I guess I could see past that.
Car started life with SMG crap and somebody got rid of it and installed 6 speed.

Thank you. It was hard seeing it go. We bonded pretty quick.
He seems like a good guy, it's his first BMW so he got lucky there considering how much stuff I've done on the car and what he paid for it. My own fault for losing time and $$$.
