View Full Version : CCV delete grief

Hey all, now that school's out for the winter break I decided to tackle the CCV delete I've been wanting to do (CCV was long gone anyways). Got all new hoses so I'd have new fittings. My setup is as follows: Valve cover runs the the catch can inlet, and runs back out to the intake manifold, with a PCV on that line. Oil dipstick capped off where the return line ran into it from the CCV. Left the intake manifold return line in place. The CCV is still in place, I cut the 3 hoses going in to it shorter to make room for my new hoses. Band clamps on most of the fittings for a secure fit.
When I started it, it sounded like it was running fine..then I realized oil was rapidly leaking out. It wasn't a slow drip, literally all the oil was lost in less than 30 seconds and I quickly shut the car off. My question is, where the heck could it be coming from?
Looking top-down, I could see a steady stream of oil underneath the connection to the intake manifold. Right around where the old connecting line to the CCV was cut All my added hoses and connections are quite good, I checked them. Am I an idiot and cut something wrong? I'd try and find the leak with the car running, but it's quite fast and I don't want to risk damage. Any ideas?

pics of your hose routing? if you inserted the PCV backwards, you could be building pressure in the crackcase, which would blow seals (kinda like what happens when the CCV freezes).

Files attached (hoses show connectivity layout but disconnected at the moment)

nice can. :)
your hose routing is correct and the PCV appears to be mounted correctly - the only thing i would suggest it setting the PCV so that it sits vertically.
what does your oil drain hose (from CCV to dipstick tube) look like right now? you said you capped it off, but how so?

Haha why thank you! Though I was hoping you'd also come back and say "no no, this is all wrong". Ah well!
The return line from the CCV I simply cut short, it's no longer connected to the dipstick tube. I put a 3/8" vacuum cap where it originally connected (on the dipstick tube).
Is it possible there's a hose that somehow got damaged--any likely possibilities in that area? I felt around best I could but found nothing. I thought I'd fixed the issue earlier, and only drained all my oil again..another trip to the AutoZone for more oil!

are you sure it's not leaking at the dipstick tube? i initially vacuum-capped the port on the dipstick tube, and it popped off right away (unbeknownst to me), and pissed oil everywhere!

I thought that might be my case, too, but the cap was still firmly in place. I re-seated the tube as well to make sure the fit was correct (and the O-ring is in good shape). Weirdly, with the car running, I can actually see the oil streaming out strongly in the spot I mentioned before--I just can't tell from exactly where.
I suppose at this point I'll put more oil in, and try to find where it's coming out by touch..not too sure what else I can check at this point.

Peter knows his stuff on this subject WAY more than I do, but here is my suggestion. Clean the engine as much as you can and run the car for 2 seconds and cut it off and do your inspection and that should make it easier.

weird. try to shine a lot of light up in that area - nothing should be leaking oil anywhere there... unless you knicked your VANOS line?

absolutely, clean helps!! :)

Cleaned everything as best I could, let it run for less than a second, came back to oil everywhere. It's a thin stream that quickly covers everything.
It seems very likely to be a hose--I went ahead and ordered a new VANOS line, can't hurt anything. Guess that'll be a good time to tackle the ofhg too :)

Thanks for the help--vanos line was indeed cracked--replaced it and the leak is gone. :) Now to find that vacuum leak..
