This looks good...

Appears to be very shallow (couldn't find dimensions anywhere), has "real" volume knob, super-reasonable price. Would love to add this to my ZHP if there are no surprises. Coming in the fall.

Checking out Sony's website they typically cutoff the back part of the Double-DIN stereos for promo pics, so I wouldn't count on it being shallow......

How shallow would we need it to be?
And wouldn't we lose steering wheel controls if we went with a solution like this?

My son bought a head unit recently and I was surprised by how shallow it was - about half of what I was used to back in the day - without a CD player, they don't need all that space
The oem integration (controls and trip computer) are what's keeping me from updating the old nav unit
Crutchfield has the option to pre-order but according to them, it does not fit our vehicles.

You may want to call (or visit as your local) and ask why. They are often very conservative on their fitment estimates.

"ZHP is a garbage option anyway- just some cosmetic upgrades with a different cam and diff to claw back some of the performance lost fitting those hideous and heavy wheels. Any 330 with a 3.46 diff will smoke a ZHP every time. The whole Mafia thing reeks of childish behavior." - anonymous E46 fanatic

For those who have Android,
Android Auto is now available for direct use on a phone. At the moment the version is sideload only, but the updated version is coming to the Play Store soon!
If you want the apk:

Thanks to Derek for the heads up!

I would think 2 din decks are generally the same size. Maybe by 'fit' they mean no simple way to adapt the connections :(

Connections are not the issue for Double DIN decks in an E46, size is. While the factory head unit looks to be Double DIN from the front, the car's HVAC unit does not allow it depth wise on the bottom. See the following pic of an aftermarket android E46 head unit, you can see where the top half is full depth, and the bottom half is only an inch or so deep.

Im really hoping that the Sony unit isn't as deep as the older units. Since it doesn't have the CD slot I'm guessing it shouldn't be too bad but FW_FW is right with the post previous to mine here, the back of the HVAC unit is more shallow than the top half where the CD slot is. If anyone does decide to try the sony unit out please keep us all updated because I will definitely buy it if it fits.

Stumbled upon this and got curious and did a little google searching. Saw this pics.

O man, that could be it! It's gotta be a fit, even if might need a bit of finessing to get it just right. Just watched the Crutchfield demo video, it's tits! Also does Android Auto in addition to CarPlay. I gotta look into this.
A dude has done one in an E36 M3....

The only thing I don't like is that it needs to be a wired (USB) connection for CarPlay/Android auto to work.

Yes, not ideal, but compared to the Chinese Ebay options, this is a dream come true. If it can be installed cleanly.

That does look promising. Also has a camera-in Port. Who is the first to dive in??

I vote KevinC haha.
If I wasn't doing the flooring in my house next month i would consider it.
I am interested in it, but I am not interested in running new speakers and speaker wire, if needed, to install.
If there is a way to cleanly install to the OEM plug/harness and also keep steering wheel controls I may be persuaded to save up quicker. Haha

Haha is right.. I would be on this like an Ethiopian on a Happy MealĀ© if not for the fact that I have been unemployed for 6 months. I'm lucky to even be able to have 2 cars right now and be financially stable, but with no income, a little undertaking like this is out of the question.
If that situation changes soon (and I expect it to), and nobody else has done it yet, I will go for it. I gotta believe that this thing can be made to fit relatively easily for a pro, and is exactly the solution I've been waiting for. I'd also upgrade all my dried up old crappy HK speakers at the same time.

Haha I hear ya man, I'm definitely researching aftermarket installs for the e46 to see how people have installed HUs (harnesses, double din kits etc)... all jokes aside, good luck on your employment search [emoji1320].

Check out the Kenwoods. GUI are great and processing speed is much factor than others.
I have one in my 05 it fit no problem and I love the way it works - and it ties into the DRV-N520 dash cam
