Installed 15mm spacers on rear wheels, right rear tail, headlight lenses, and two new style aluminum mafia stickers.

Rear wheels (Style 45s) were stained with brake dust. Cleaned twice using BMW factory wheel brush kit; once with Sonax and once with Iron Cut. Required lots of elbow grease - and 98% of the baked on brake dust is gone.

Pics and threads to follow sometime...

Well today I scheduled "the window tint" for next Saturday. Never had this done aftermarket on any car I have had so we'll see how she goes. I like Keith's tint and Dane's but here in PA I'm thinking of staying conservative on the darkness. 30% works or maybe even as light as 40%. I hate tickets. I will see what they say at the shop, they know best right?

No, they don't always know what's best. You should check with the State Tint Laws, before you make your choice. 30% is pretty dark, IMO, if you go all the way around. Make an informed decision. Best of luck!

Wise advice Hornung. Well here is what PA says

The PA STATUTE (the actual law) only prohibits tinting which
"does not permit a person to see or view the inside of the vehicle."

Pretty pretty vague if you ask me. At night, on a cloudy day, in the sun, at dusk it can all change..I'm thinking 40% would be safe, even tho I want 30.

Well...In PA, as per the 2011 Tint Laws by State (http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/), no car registered can have tinted windows, if manufactured after MY1998. It is a means to fail the safety inspection. Good luck with that! 40% shouldn't draw too much attention!

I recently got mine done at a shop in PA. The shop told me that any aftermarket tint is illegal if it is more than 70%.

I went with it anyway. I mean I've seen SUV's and minivans that come from the factory with privacy glass as dark as 30% tint....

Well I'm getting my tint done today as I found a local guy who I was told does killer work. I trust word of mouth more then anything. He is very expensive but he can do work on Sat and Sunday as he is does everything himself out of a tiny shop. He charges $250 and does not computer cut his patterns, everything is by hand so I'm sure that's why the high price. It will take 4 hrs to do. I was quoted $180 out of a high volume shop about an hour away but I think I like going with a single shop owner, probably will take more pride in his work. It's like artisin work, and nothing is to much for my car...just can't let the wife know I'm now paying $70 bucks more :ninja

So yesterday I woke up and checked the bank account. Yay, I had some money! I just had to keep it 'till my next paycheck so I could have even more to pay bills with.

At the end of yesterday, I ended up coming to the sad realization that car tax (for my E30 which I no longer own; WTH?) and a particularly large payment were due yesterday and I forgot about them. Yay, more money out of pocket. Then I remembered that my rear tires are corded, so they are officially dangerous to drive on. Best part? There goes the rest of my money.

I'm just hoping it's relatively safe to drive on them for a few weeks or a month, 'cuz a new set of tires ain't happening anytime soon. Anyone want to pick me up going to Bimmerfest? :)

Define cheap... and how much tread? I'm looking for a full set front and rear. Buy once, is the goal. :)
The two fronts are defective, so those have to go as well.

Thanks DW...

Forget it BP. They're cheap. Only rear's. 50%-75% tread. Doesn't really fit your stringent requirements. I thought you were in a bind....something like driving on corded tires in the rear. I must have had my head in my ass.

I took my car in to get the MD State Safety Inspection and was nailed on some items I was going to replace anyway. I just wanted to see if I would get away with it, i.e. how strict is the MD inspection compared to NC? So, the shop nailed me on tires, CABs, windshield wipers, and the rear rotors. All but the rotors were known to me. For the tires, I'm gonna throw on a set of Hankooks and go from there. I don't much like these Goodyear Eagle F1 All Seasons. I just ordered a set of Meyle HD CABs and a rear brake kit from ECS Tuning. I will snoop around for wipers since Pelican Parts and Bavauto both want almost 40 bucks! Unless that's normal for the ZHP. Whatever. I'll go to Autozone/Advance Auto and snoop around for wipers when I'm picking up brake cleaner. Worse comes to worst, I'll get the wipers from Pelican.

On a side note, the tech doing the inspection noted a fail for the front lights - presumably for the brights? The head tech spoke with me and said I only needed the above to pass - he didn't say anything about the lights. The brights work fine, as the car has xenon bulbs so the inners are used for the flashing only when the lights are off. I'm pretty sure they realized this after inspecting it. MD inspection also requires to make sure the light comes on for the parking brake and that the seats can move. That last one is kind of strange.

So, just as I'm recovering from the huge financial hit of having to buy new tires all around, I'm given another chance to empty the nonexistant money in my bank account.
Brake pads, all around. Along with rotors. Darned idiot light came on for brake pads today...

That means two sets; one for track, one for street, because the street pads sure as hell ain't gonna cut it on the track (as evidence by my last time there... SCARY!).

The kicker: a full set of rotors, pads, fluid, etc. is about $416 plus shipping from Turner. Unfortunately, this includes regular rotors and regular pads, and the pads definitely won't cut it; I'll be crashing into a barrier from overheated brakes by the 2nd session. Included in this kit is:

Standard ATE Type 200 brake fluid
Axxis/PBR MetalMaster brake pads (front and rear)
OEM rotors all around
No brake lines

With the upgrades I want (I should say, need), the prices go significantly higher:
Hawk HP+ pads (+ $128.29)
Slotted rotors (+ $71.12)
Stainless steel brake lines (+ $112.45)
I would also upgrade the brake fluid to Motul RBF600 (+ ~$34)
Total = ~$765. This DOES NOT include the separate front rotors and pads I want to run for regular street driving.

My ZHP is going to bankrupt me... lol

Going tomorrow to a performance shop to see if my existing rotors can take another set of pads. If so, that would reduce the cost by a loooooooooong shot!

Let's see...
HPDE's are a need. It's what I live for; if I can't attend an HPDE in my year, I have no real events to really look forward to. You know, the "I reeeeeeally don't mind waking up at 0430 for this event!" days.

OEM pads won't last on the track. The last event, my OEM pads were so cooked (overheating) by the 3rd session, that it was almost downright dangerous to continue. My rotors may need replacing, but have no idea because I didn't put them on, the PO did. Who knows when that was. Plus, I don't feel comfortable mixing track pad materials on the same rotors as the standard pad. The track pad is also more aggressive on the rotors and wears them down quicker, so I don't want to mix my daily driven rotors with pads that will destroy them even faster than the excessive mileage I put on them.

Stainless steel lines were actually one of my top "wants" for the next few months. They drastically reduce the pedal travel (much more firm), as with the stock setup, it was darned near impossible to heel and toe coming down the straight because the pedal sank so far down into the carpet. Firming up the brake pedal will give me a chance to heel and toe. With stainless lines, the brake fluid won't expand and contract the brake lines much, which results in the firm brake pedal. It really is a killjoy to brake with the stock setup on the track, IMO, and reduces my learning ability since I'd be so distracted with how crappy the stock pads and lines are...

Pretty much, compromising on any of these components results in much less enjoyability. My E30 had friggin' awesome brakes in this respect...

Hopefully if the guy says the rotors are useable for another set of pads, then my plan is to get fluid, pads, and lines. Done deal, hundreds less than with rotors...

Let's see if I can squeeze out a bargain-hunters type of deal; a complete front setup without rotors for $300 or so. The hunt begins...

My headline.....is that I had to pull over..into the emergency lane today for the first time in the ZHP. Felt the car stumble.....gave it gas.....nothing was there. Car stalled. I started it up....gave it some gas.....then it seemed to even itself out, and ran fine all the way home (another 20 miles). I could still "feel" something wrong though.

I'm thinking this may be classic symptom of needing a new fuel filter. I am on the original at 133,330 miles. Agree?

I'm using oil at a rather rapid pace (1 qt every 200-500 miles). Indy mech thinks its possible I may have a blown diaphragm in the Crankcase-Ventilation/oil separator. It's a PITA to get to - located underneath the intake manifold.

Just ordered the separator and all hoses to change this out from AutohausAZ (ZHPMafia.com affiliate link (http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-4193730-10701773)) to see if this corrects the problem.

Well, It's raining here in NEPA. I was driving approaching a stop sign with a car at it and decided (while braking) to turn my headlights to 'auto' to see if they came on. Next thing I knew..BAM. Apparently I wasn't braking hard enough.

Guy in the older green buick got out all mad and I told him to go to the parking lot right there so we didn't hold up traffic. When he got out again in the parking lot, he was all nice and asked if I was okay and that he didn't see any damage on his car and I couldn't see any on mine so he said he's good to go and we parted ways.

YAY!!! I hope skipping the hoses doesn't come back to bite you in the ass like mine did to me...And honestly after looking over the parts I pulled. I think the expansion tank was the only part replaced in 2009 (maybe the thermostat, too)...so those hoses may have been OE...:dunno

108k when I over filled the expansion tank...thank God that held out, the hose separated from the plastic 'neck'. The tank is still in good shape.

I know you're on a proven Bimmerphile's Cooling Regimen, So you'll be okay since you're low mileage. But as much trouble as I went through (even with you there LOL) I don't want to see anybody go through that.

Old School Maintenance says 150k for the coolant hoses, which would make me nervous. My plan was to try and make it to 90k and do the hoses when I do the expansion tank.

Used some compound and my new toy porter cable on my glossy window trip and got that all up to par. Pillars are like mirrors and the park that goes up and around the windows are all fixed up. They used to be a little discolored and had a few weird spots on them.

I figured it would be a good starting point for me and my porter. After seeing the pillars all nice... I'm really wanting a black car :|

Have to try and figure out what is up with my drivers side turn signal. Ive looked over everything, no loose connections, good bulb etc. The last couple weeks, almost every time I start the car, the indicator in the dash shows its out and the bulb is out. If I tap slightly on the assembly it lights up and stays so.....

Anyone else have this issue??

Cruisin along...AC on...got a lil chilly...set temp to 69, and moved dial to red dots....low coolant warning came on....Put dial back on blue dots....lowered temp to 59....low coolant warning light went out.....so I rolled down window, since it was warmer outside.

I may be a lil low on coolant.

bummer DW, sorry to see that.

one thing i learned about that type of situation from my stepmother, who is a lawyer, is that even if those big dump trucks have placards that say "not responsible for vehicle damage" or something similar, they absolutely ARE responsible. if that happens and you can manage to get plates and company info, do so! send them a nasty letter from an attorney and they will most likely pay up. those companies are totally responsible for the crap they fling all over the roads, regardless of bumper stickers claiming otherwise.

Was just driving and my coolant light came on. Took a little-more-than-spirited entrance on to the highway and ~10 seconds later the low coolant light came on. Put it in 6th and cruised and went out. Then after a bit I downshifted to 5th and then 4th and got on it again to see if the light would come on again..and it did. Then it went back out for the reminder of my drive (10 more minutes)

I'll check my levels tomorrow morning when the car is cool. I just added a whole tank worth of coolant last october, so I'm a bit weary on this situation I'm in now..

Stayin' with Charlie tonight so tomorrow we could tackle his driver's side headlight retrofit. Can't wait to get all of it working; the passenger side looks awesome, and this retrofit *could* be done for less than $150 if one plays his cards right... :)

danewilson77
09-17-2011, 05:18 PM
Mmm....did the light come on after you turned the heat on?

The correlation is that when you turn the heat on, the heater valve open, and allows coolant to flow to heater core. So, if you're on the edge of getting the light, and you turn the heat, most likely the light will come on.

This happened to me the other day. I turned heat on...light came on. I turned heat off...light went off. Thought maybe I was a tad low on coolant, but I checked it tonight, and the Damn float tube almost ejected itself outta the exp tank. I am def not low, and would consider it high, if I had just added.

I have never removed the exp tank cover until tonight. 13 months.

Dane,

I filled up my gas tank at Naval Station Newport, reset my trip meter, and drove home on the highway (27 miles). I was just chillin' going home when I noticed this on my dash cluster....I got excited, hence the blurry pic... and took it. As you can see I wasn't stomping on the gas like I normally do...just enjoying the drive home this particular day and have to say that this was the best gas mileage indication I have seen so far since owning my ZHP :biggrin Doing my "normal" driving (80mph) I have seen an average of anywhere between 24 - 27 mpg on my cluster....not saying this is my actual mpg....

Naaah, actually enjoying the moment therefore chillin' while driving home from Newport. Most of the times, the traffic here gets crazy, especially around 4pm going over the Newport Bridge...so after getting through I just pulled into the right lane and chilled the rest of the way home when all of a sudden I noticed the mpg....not too many times I get excited over something trivial such as this but since BP had to post his incredible mpg pic...I felt compelled to do the same...:biggrin

Dane,

I have literally poured lots of $$$ to get my ///M the way I want it...now I want to keep it perfect and not have to worry about the other bone-heads out there...you know....the econoboxes who think they are driving a race car....

At least with the ZHP I don't get harassed nowhere close like I do when driving the ///M. It's funny actually because I have gotten used to the ZHP to a point that everytime I take the ///M out, I have to "relearn" it's rawness...:biggrin

Eventually when I finally get my ZHP all sorted out and perfect, I will have a difficult time choosing....:thumbsup Everyone should have to have this problem :biggrin

I got this the day after I bought my car, zigzagging through Colo on 2 lanes. I wasn't even going for mileage until the last 20 miles or so, trying to keep it above 33 mpg. It will always get better mileage at higher altitudes, I noticed the same thing on my BMW bike. Needless to say, hitting all the good 2 lanes through Colo. was a BLAST!!
