My previous car was rear-ended and the damage looked much less than that, but as you said the frame was bent and you really dont want it back after that. I was lucky as it led me to this baby and I am so much happier. Best of luck.

Last night I suffered through hours of trying to get my expansion tank out. So far we're about 10 hours into the cooling refresh project, and we've only gotten to the point of reinstalling the new parts from the water pump forward. Still have to install the belts, radiator, expansion tank/cap, the mount for it (hell, we still have to separate the old expansion tank from the mount as we removed it as a whole), hoses, etc. This is taking a lot longer than we expected, but at least the car *should* be ready by the end of the day...

I ended up doing what you did and just removed the tank and mount. I squirted the connection with some WD40 and it almost fell apart after only about 10 minutes. I'm sure you've tried something similar by now though so yours must really be on there tight. Good luck.

I guess I was lucky with my cooling system. Took about 3.5 work hours (not counting lunch, etc). Expansion tank was one of the more 'resistant' parts to remove but after reading all the DIYs I was prepared and just pried it up enough to be able to pull it off from the top. The new one seemed loose, but it doesn't leak. Replaced all hoses, belts, thermostat & housing, new Stewart wp, expansion tank, etc. Basically everything but the radiator and I was looking at the one advertised in Roundel that has a built-in expansion tank and is solid aluminum but mine looks great.

Car was at 110k mi but mostly highway since I put 60k mi on it commuting 100 mi a day for years. The belts were the only thing that looked like they needed replacing.

Finally finished the job. Total approximate time invested: ~14 hrs.
That expansion tank alone took hours to try to remove. Then we had to keep cross-checking information online with what the Bentley was saying because the manual oh-so-conveniently left out some very important bits, such as "how many screws, what locations, and what types of screws" instead of saying "remove screws". That, and it had the arrow pointed to the wrong unit when I was looking for the tensioner pulley; it was pointing at the thing next to it, not the pulley itself. That alone took 20 minutes to figure out why the stupid belt wasn't getting loose.

But, finally done, and happy to report; no overheating or leaks.

Good deal...and I am sure you learned a ton. How much coolant were you able to get in it? The only other tip I would give (I know....a day late and a $ short) would be to not overfill the expansion tank. The level instructions on top of the tank are quite misleading.

Not really misleading at all, unless you mean inaccurate. We didn't get to put much in as we couldn't loosen the engine block drain plug (we couldn't get to it!) so as a result there was still some coolant in the block. We only used about half a gallon of distilled water and half a gallon of coolant/antifreeze.

Ok...so you replaced about 1/2 of system capacity. On the indicator....it shows the dipstick almost protruding out of the exp tank. That is too full....and really you should fill, just until the level float moves and becomes steady.

Well at this point, it's too late. It didn't say that anywhere, so I went with the information I had.

I wasn't suggesting that at all...but if you think you may have overfilled....you could just suck some out of the exp tank with a turkey baster or a battery acid pump. I pick one of these up at auto zone.....for my ps refresh for about $1.00.....

Pulled into the garage tonight and smelled the age-old-BMW-burning-oil-I've-got-a-leak-somewhere smell.

Popped the hood and looked to the passenger rear of the motor and.... yep, looks like a leaking vcg.

The plan: Going to attack the Vanos rattle at the dealer under CPO. Hopefully I will get a Vanos job out of it, and, subsequently, a new vcg.

We shall see.

My bad, DW. I thought you were referencing the vcg. Yeah, I know I'll still have to do the Vanos another 50,000 from now, but I believe they put a new Vanos unit in on the warranty repair. If that's the case, I still get a Vanos unit with 50,000 less miles on it.

I'll look into it. If they just replace seals, I'll do it myself with the Beisan kit.

No leaks. I put some more in it today after work as well. At this point I don't know if it's still cycling through the system, but what I do know is that if I continue to see no leaks and the levels finally stay relatively stable, I'm going to do a full flush on Saturday because it's bothering me knowing there's a lot more antifreeze/coolant in there now than there is water.

Well I just went out to the garage to swap out my lower mesh grill and I noticed there was a small coolant leak on the cardboard under my car. :confused The expansion tank level was also lower than when it was parked in November

I will have to lift it next week and check it out...I have a feeling it may be from the stupid coolant level sensor at the bottom of the tank

It may just be the cold weather. I've seen that before so don't be surprised if it quits leaking once it warms up a bit. Coolant sensor would be a likely suspect since they are a pretty common spot for a small leak.

john - if you don't mind me asking, what is bmw heat film?

I got a big stack of receipts and maintenance records and that is officially what stock grade tint is called, "heat film" , it's printed on my receipt from Richmond BMW.

Two tows in two weeks - AAA Plus membership pays for itself.

Used front differential takes the place of the differential that seized while driving.

Hopefully you're getting all of the bad luck out of the way in one shot.

And glad one of us is getting their money's worth out of the AAA Plus. I've been paying for about 15 years now and have never used it once. Could probably have bought a tow truck by now, lol.

Thanks Keith. I hope I'm getting the back luck out of the way too, but at the mileage I have on the car I guess I am bound to find a few things reaching end of useful life. I had a few months where the cars were too quiet. I was squirreling away the funds for regular maint., preventative maint. and had extra for mods.

Glad to hear you haven't had to use it. If you ever do - it really does come in handy.

Nothing major, but I liked the looked of some of the SoCal Mafia's color matching front bumper, so I bought a set from Khoality. The "before" looks a little brighter due to the angle of how the pic was taken and the flash (just with my phone). The "after" pic has reflections from the flash off the paint, those are white marks. I like how it cleans up the bumper look. John

EDIT: not sure why when you click on the pic they are sideways.

What's too cool? Doesn't get out of the blue? For how long?

Was there a setting or specification on the new thermostat?

On the side of your radiator, are you running the lower setpoint temperature switch that starts the aux fan?

Is it running so cold that you think the new tstat could be stuck open?

Or do you think that you have too much air in the system and you aren't seeing the true temp?

Johnmadd
03-17-2011, 08:14 PM
Too much air is the most likely.

billschusteriv
03-17-2011, 08:20 PM
You are right - that's probably it.

My mind was racing for a few - thinking of random possibilities.

My mech fills the expansion tank to just below the cap, replace exp tank cap, crack the 8mm vent, and turns the car on/off. It does a pretty good job of getting the air out.

I don't have a pit and don't want my garage floor to get anymore fluids on it - so I normally drive it and let the air work its way back to the exp tank.

Got any pics of what it looks like?
From a BimmerForums thread about hard-wiring a TPMS (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=745478):

That way I could pull +12V & GND from that unused plug under my armrest rather than splice / tap wires. I could probably make some computer parts I have lying about work (e.g. IDE cables, mobo headers, etc.), but I really like the clean, OE look . . .

I had two issues with the car:
1) clunks over bumps
2) VERY loud road noise at certain speeds

The wheel bearings were deemed faulty because they made noise upon inspection, so today we replaced the front control arm bushings and the two front wheel bearings.

The result:
Road noise is still there
Clunk is still there

I'm PISSED. I spent a lot of money on parts and labor this week... :mad

So now I need front shock mounts to cure the clunking and new tires because they're the culprits on the road noise. The problem? It's almost at full tread, so I have to live with it 'till it wears out... :crying

It's not the labor I'm lost on, it's the parts. Parts were almost $330 shipped; labor was only a fraction of that.
And, Turner had better prices than him, so that's where I ordered from.

That sucks BP! What kind of tires are they? The Potenzas that were on my car when I bought it were crazy loud. I ended up changing them out a little early to get rid of the noise. Hankook V12s made a world of difference.

Pirelli PZero Nero's.
I haven't really had much traction issues with them, but I never push them on the street like that. I've autocrossed with this set once and ran a single HPDE day in them and they did alright, but I remember this noise being apparent towards the end of 2010, which is well after all of those events.

Regardless, I've got a loooong way to go to get these to wear out, so I'm inclined to just get another set and sell these cheap for someone that just needs tires.

Well that sucks......when you spend good money on a tire you'd expect them to also be quiet along with working good. I'm just hoping these Hankooks stay nice and quiet, so far so good at around 8000 miles.

Check it with the windows rolled down. I never hear it from inside the car, but with the windows rolled down, it's as loud as day. I'm willing to bet that you really do have it.

BP, maybe they are rear wheel bearings. My drivers side rear was replaced at 56k. I too thought it was tire noise, but it ended up being the wheel bearing...not cheap though :(

Nope. Rear bearings make no noise; we tested for this on the lift.

I don't know, I've done that. I've even stood outside with one leg in to operate the gas pedal with the hood open and still never heard anything. Just hoping it stays that way, but at 86,000 if it isn't doing it yet I think I should be ok.

Sheesh - guy I'm hoping that's ground. Because a three day layover from Cerritos to Laurel for air shipping would suck knowing your stuff was sitting on the runway for that long. :biggrin
