I let my car sit for over a week and went to drive the car to work this morning. Bummer start to the day, dead battery! I am looking to get a replacement as the battery in the car is 5+ years old. I am looking at the following and would like some thoughts. Open to other recommendations for brand/makes of battery. Also, I know my E91 required a trip to the dealer to register the battery. Does the E46 require the same kind of attention?
Note: all are AGM except Interstate
Duracell Ultra Platinum AGM Battery for 2005 BMW 330I L6 3.0L 640CCA Car and Truck (Part# SLI94RAGM)
Duracell X2Power Battery for 2005 BMW 330I L6 3.0L 640CCA Car and Truck (Part# SLI94RAGMDP)
Interstate Mega-Tron Plys (Part # MTP-94R/H7)
Duralast Platinum Battery (Part# H7-AGM)

what about the OEM battery from BMW? it's not that expensive, and very good.

I believe the battery registration hassle was introduced with the E90, so there should be no dealer trip required.
One of our member's here (William I think) used this-
Duralast 94R DLG
And I don't think they have any issues...
And I believe it is a straight swap, no coding or dealer trip required...

This duralast 94R DLG or the Duralast H8-AGM are great choices. I went with the H8-AGM. No coding needed for the E46 either.

What on earth is battery registration?
Battery?!

For the newer BMW's with AGM batteries the charging profile is varied based on the capacity and age of the battery and you need to "register" a new battery with the ECU

It's shit like this that makes me think the e46 generation of BMWs are among the best.

Actually it doesn't seem too bad, but it would be nice if they made it possible to do without an expensive trip to the dealer.

It is possible without an expensive trip. But they could make it even easier.
Like an option in the settings menu or something.

Duralast H7-AGM is the winner, perfect fit. Only bad thing, previous owner "misplaced" the elbow on the tube that attaches to the battery. Back to the dealer... <to do it right>

As for this, I have owned a LOT of German cars (VW, Porsche, BMW and Audi) and the E46 ranks as my top platform. It is a solid tie with the VW Mk1 GTI, German perfection!
I put a NAPA in mine five or six years ago and it's still fine.

Same here, no issues and was the least expensive from Advanced or Auto Zone. Was installed at the beginning of the year.

I like the AGM batteries, But I ordered two thru Carquest and both were more than 6 months old. One was a year old. That's a long time to sit on a shelf (almost certainly not tended by a charger ) and then ask for full price. I ended up with the Walmart size 49 non- AGM in my e39 which has been great for 7 yrs.
I would recommend folks learn the date codes for each battery brand (they're usually similar) and buy the freshest one.
