Starting this to serve as a working maintenance / repairs log.

2003
BMW E46
330iZHP

Grey interior

Purchased on 7/8/16 photo from when I was looking it over in the shop a few days before

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160714/d28ad556bffbe1c2c99e2c381ac4574f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160714/6d8f8336cf55c6b17da7e5c4ecf17e4a.jpg

Everything was in good order, I was pretty particular when looking it over. It's on the original cooling system and due for filters by the looks of them, so I will be giving it a bit of attention over the next few weeks.

Previous owner (JB3) installed the M factory helical lsd. And turner sway bar in the rear, came with the front loose in the trunk. Will install when I have a moment at work.

First thing I did was massage all the nasty out of the steering wheel. Warm water and a micro fiber and gently rubbing. Dried with towel. Air dried for a day. Then used a cheapo fabric shaver to clean up a bit of pilling. I wasn't fully satisfied so I broke out the school Quattro and very gently shaved the stray areas.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160714/343281a715545f76af9857869472f470.jpg

Then a bit of a whores bath. Meguiars wash and wax in one, followed by a coat of Meguiars NXT wax.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160714/737b581262638adaf36526e2c49df9e9.jpg

Vehicle believed to be on the original cooling system.

So I ordered a Stewart water pump and a behr thermostat.

I tend to over do things a bit, in that spirit i will probably go aluminum radiator and end tank. I've got to compare it to the oe on Monday when I'm back at work.

Plenty of other maintenance scheduled
Oil/filters/trans fluid/RTABs etc.

Got ahold of some Griots interior cleaner and noted after using it on the driver air bag cover that it brought all kinds of gooey mess to the surface.[emoji31] Tried a few things to clean all the gunk off ended up using rubbing alcohol. And absolutely destroying a white terry cloth. Then wiping it down with the Griots, It's as good as new now[emoji108]

Stick with the OE tank and radiator. The factory cooling system is great when it's maintained.

And get the upper and lower hoses plus sensors.

Do it once

Absolutely overkill to the aluminum parts you mentioned...I mean...even the Stewart pump is as well. The OE one lasted this long after all...get another one and it'll be another 80k for a third of the price.

Otherwise great job, I use the same method every so often on my steering wheel (damp rag and massage). Works great, I don't understand the need for any type of special cleaner there.

One of our parts guys swapped me a set of performance pedals and a performance knob for a coolant flush and cleaning his alcantara wheel

Of course it's a 5 speed knob. Guess I'll have to get creative with it.

Today was my day off, decided to go in and take care of a few things. Haven't played with my gopro in a while and decided to do a time lapse of the services. I was expecting this to go much smoother, however the brake bleeding was not cooperating with me. so i resorted to a manual bleed and edited that bit out. Co-workers were making their rounds throughout as well.

https://youtu.be/FkgFVupqb3c

As performed,

1) remove filters filter cap and oil caphttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160723/76ac721da10253a72d2637ed751c4734.jpg

2) set up pressure bleeder

3) drain oil and attempt to open bleeder screws*, reseal drain plug and remove wheels.
*nothing happened. I suspected that the calipers were gunked up as the fluid looked pretty bad in the reservoir before clearing and filling it. decided to attempt manual bleed and that worked. so ill have to look into the pressure bleeding issue later.

4) replace fuel filter, go to parts because the original clamps are useless. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160723/18f2b3f5f697eb1e90fd90ad50ea1fc4.jpg

5) remove fuse 54 (i believe ) and set up the fuel injection service kit.

6) pinch off the fuel supply line.

7) cut the fuel treatment with gas, hook up the air regulate to 65psi and let her idle.

8) run back and forth to the balancer

9) listen for that low fuel sound

10) repeat step 7

11) finish the balancing and bolt the wheels up. Torque wheels.

12) fuel service is finally finished. remove tool and restore the fuel system to operating condition. start it up, clear any stored codes and make sure idle is achievable.

13) remove ignition coils and place a blower over the engine to cool things down

14) replace spark plugs, anti-seize and torque to 30Nm http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160723/05869095ae94225a1e0cd163930100c2.jpg

15) raised back up to install the turner front bar.

16) installed performance pedals.

DONE!!!

Note: at some point I cleared the power steering reservoir and just topped it up with fresh fluid, not a flush by any means, I just couldn't bring myself to get dirty on my day off.

Might even have the Windows tinted, we will see...

Also scored a Behr coolant expansion tank for Free.99, co-worker decided to go through his entire cooling system and when done realized the p.o. Had replaced the expansion tank less than 5k miles ago.

Not sure what they would normally run. I used to work there and still pretty friendly with a bunch of the guys. But it was over Labor Day weekend, I believe I got 75 off for buying 4 and 60 off for using the DTC credit card. Between that and whatever they knocked off, I felt pretty good about it.

And finally got the tires installed, I've been dragging tail a bit on the powder coating. Hopefully soon.

I was a bit disappointed in the lifting situation via the local DTC. The tech could have pulled forward a few more inches and gotten both lift pads on instead of resting the rear on the pinch rail.

But I was in and out in 14 minutes soo... [emoji847]

within a half hour of the ebay headers arriving I ordered a set of BimmerBrakes Gen3 headers!!!

Installed the injen intake, I would say it is a nice cheap alternative to the AFE box.
The filter itself is not the one shown in the stock photos I posted earlier it has no center media just the outer.

The velocity stack is plastic I'm sure it functions just the same just not as pretty when cleaning the filter. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170126/8c6e528658415a293a35ab48fb580bea.jpg

The intake boot had to be slackened and repositioned to mate up. Not a big deal at all.

The tab had to be removed from the coolant reservoir for the lid to fit on. I've replaced more expansion tanks than I can count and have never noticed those tabs just slide off.

And then there is this which I have messaged them about. It's a leak waiting to happen https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170126/f37fd7e503f435238f32ddc97c5add89.jpg

Grind that spot weld out before you put them on or it will break and leak. I have exact same headers I had to pull the front one off and have the hole the spot weld left behind welded. Not fun.
Don't expect an answer from them. When I emailed them about it, all I got was silence.
On a lighter note, the guy that welded it is a custom fabricator and said the headers were well made.
Also the bungs for the secondary O2 sensors aren't in an ideal spot. If you plan on keeping them, you'll need 90° elbows. Put the sensors on the headers before installing them and use OEM manifold and pipe gaskets. The ones that come within them are trash. Also if you can, leave the heat shields on the manifold gaskets.
See my project thread for other tips if you need them. I don't have a link but it's called "it was supposed to be just an oil pan gasket project "

Your thread and the resulting leak is what made me look them over so well.

I messaged them on Facebook. Showed them the issue and suggested it may cause a leak and they gave me the ok to sever the tack. ( said they would make a note on the order. ) I just used a dremmel and a metal cutting wheel and rounded it off. It's pretty well hidden so I'm not worried about finishing it out in fear of removing too much.

I've found most company's I've dealt with lately seem to respond quicker on social media than conventional correspondence. From my utilities department here in Raleigh NC to Dinan Engineering lol.

Oh! And how about this oil pan that has decided it needs to leak! Guess I should buy a baffle from vac and figure out what I'm gonna do for the OPN, since I'm gonna have it down soon....

Test fit went well. I have decided that I'm just going to have BPC here in Raleigh tune out the rear 02s and possibly cold start/sai.

The 90 degree spacers I had planned on using don't quite cut it on the rear manifold as it will hit regardless of where it is indexed. (Thought for about 20 minutes about getting crafty with it and decided against it so not to void any warranty on the bbg3 headers.)

This is how I left it over night.

Looks like you're getting there! If you have someone that can code out the O2 sensors and SAP, I'd go for that. It's so much less of a hassle and all the SAP is going to do is take up space and block the view of those gorgeous headers. That engine support brace is huge!

A few notes on install. These things are terrible if trying to install with factory heat shields, but not undoable.

I was able to make it work but I spent the better part of an hr on one but with 3 different wrenches I kept having to swap out for. And one nut was so inaccessible I swapped it with a non-capsulated one from our hardware stock so I could spin it down with the tip of my finger. Once down I was able to go between the tube and the head/block with a very thin wrench. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170204/22e6f1e3fa25d3ccd1e468d79314d82c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170204/e7e652ef986bdba473b4d410f6ff5f51.jpg

You can kind of see how I managed to get it with these pics.

I found myself at times wishing I had ordered the regular SS reps.

Now just to get the o2s and sai coded out

Installed the shifter between cars today. Pretty straight forward. I unbolted the heat shield and dropped it into the exhaust and massaged my hand in from underneath, to set the selector rod after install.

When putting the knob on I realized my performance knob had come apart when I removed it from the original shifter. So I'll be epoxying that back together.

Couple of things that I noticed, the shift knob is not degrees quite the same on the shaft. And 6th gear is awkward. I'm sure I'll get used to it though.

I wonder if my motor mounts and trans mounts are to blame, that theoretically would put more angle on the selector rod between the shaft and trans, therefore causing 2 4 and 6 to be less traveled and the opposite for R 1 3 and 5.

^ that may be overthinking it

Either way I think BFI motor mounts and some poly trans mounts of some sort are in order.

Well it belonged to an older lady back in 2005 when my coworker purchased it. She said it looked like a cool car. It had relatively low miles when my coworker took possession, I believe he said around 80k. So since then he has been using it strictly back and forth to work. And he just so happens to commute over 100 miles per day.

The odometer reads 516,XXX

It's got its share of rock chips on the nose.

Suspension was overhauled in late 2014, all bushings were replaced. The motor mounts are the only original rubber under the car. It's on it's 3rd driveshaft and center support bearing. The interior is pristine for DG. The motor had valve seals and cyclone separator done in 2016. The secondary air is quite loud and she's consuming some oil as one could imagine for an s52 let alone the 500k+ odometer.

He was going to trade it on his newly acquired 335d but sales was so scared of the mileage they wanted him to agree to letting them see what it fetched at auction -500 before giving him a trade amount.

I think the car meant to much to him to let it go to the vultures. He's got more projects at home than he can handle. He always intended to make a respectable track car out of it.

I've always half heartedly joked with him about it to the tune of "when you gonna let me have that car", "time to sell it to me" whenever he would pull it in the shop to replace or repair something (usually tires or topping oil)

I believe I will renew all bearings bore the block as needed and maybe rebuild the head. Probably have the front resprayed and just enjoy having the highest mileage M3 around

Holy shit. How?

I'm sure there has been mention of it in other threads here or on other forums, but I Have come to understand it's the difference of a tune that's safe for the masses and therefore conservative Vs. A Dyno Tune where the A/F ratio can be monitored real time and timing, fuel, etc. can be adjusted to make peak HP/TQ while maintaining temps and A/F.

That's not to take away from all mail order tunes, I believe the consensus is the Dinan software is a bit on the "conservative side" when compared to others. Even so it was a noticeable difference from stock.

WOW... that's impressive. i want that tune!

I'm very happy with the tune. I've logged a little over 200 miles with it so far and it's an obvious increase in power in the lower rpm.

cats can still bring big numbers, if they are high-flow units. magnaflow makes some decent all-metal substrate units that flow really well.

but yeah, headers - no wonder those numbers are so good. look at that torque curve - so flat. even gains across the powerband.

you are fortunate that that shop is fairly local! it looks like they do remote tuning as well. hmmm...

Started on the steering wheel cover this afternoon after we slowed up at work.

eBay sellers name is mooventsteven, product was listed as a wheel cover wrap.

Much more time consuming than anticipated. Was only able to get the lower left section finished before 5:30.

I drove home with the lower left stitched together and continued installing.

The pattern was off a bit somewhere between the 12 o'clock position and 3 o'clock position. The later photos show this. I started at the 3 o'clock with the top section and by the time I made it to the seam I decided to restart on the 9 o'clock. But, as I closed in on the right side seam it was obvious the pattern was off.

I will be contacting the seller, but don't expect much will be done.

Overall, I'm pleased with the outcome for 50.00 shipped , and it can be removed much faster than it went on.

$44 for that one. They also had an alignment issue.

Went in this morning to replace both rear window regulators and decided to spray the lower grille and fog surrounds. To spray the grille I released all the tabs and pressed it toward the rear, then as seen in the pics taped off the bumper.

IDK why some e46 guys don't like these things... pretty awesome in my opinion.

I am however tempted to scope throttle input and actual position on all 3 settings, feel free to link it if such a thing has already been posted.

I think I can answer this, as someone who really dislikes it.

I find it near impossible to drive the car smoothly with the Sprint Booster. It doesn't do a good job of providing an appropriate level of throttle response when barely touching the accelerator, and instead provides way too much output. In a Sprint Booster car, the only throttle positions seem to be on or off.

It needs to be able to sense whether the driving style being employed is aggressive or not so it can better react to the driving situation at hand, which it does not do. As a result, you have to finesse the throttle way too much to get a smooth start at anything less than an aggressive launch.

Ultimately, anything the Sprint booster does you can do with the stock pedal settings: add more throttle. If anything, the stock settings provide better control due to the larger usable range of input.

I find it unlikely that the three cars I drove that had them all had defective units.

I never owned one. I do have a PedalBox, which behaves a little better, but has the same fundamental problem, which is why it's disabled all the time.

Bruh how you liking that leather wheel wrap compared to the Alcantara?

I like it, it ads a bit of thickness to the wheel so that is nice. But it's not perfect by any means. Easily has the potential to be if the manufacturer would make a minor adjustment to the pattern and or stitching.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170820/098f5cecb27596e482dc39018d550db1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170820/7bdcb166886281a7ab6acb4bd6321ad0.jpg(Pattern just doesn't line up in one area and stitching is not symmetrical )

When I reached out to the ebay seller, they responded in similar fashion to Eonon, if you've ever dealt with them. i.e.; suggesting I remove the cover and try again, I'm not gonna lie when I realized the issue was there the first attempt I unstitched the wheel and started over again even went as far as to work from the opposite side. On that attempt I realized they had the pattern off and the stitching did not line up on both sides. So I got creative with the threading to get a tight fit. It looks [emoji106] everywhere except the right side around the top of 3 o'clock spot.

The leather is starting to fatigue in that area, but all in all money well spent.

They claim to be a poly/rubber mix??? Not sure what that means.

The motor mounts are much smaller dimensionally, they weigh a bit more, the keying on the mounts is in the correct place. They installed as easy as any set of mounts. I thought it best to keep the factory heat shield in place.

The trans mounts were a bit different than I'm used to seeing, almost like a washer or plate is suspended between the two ends. But they too were keyed correct and mounted fine.

Start up I noticed only that the shifter seemed to vibrate less, not that it vibrated a lot to begin with. Driving around town there is no more clunk from sudden acceleration. I had written the accelerating clunk off as being caused by the akg diff bushings and limited slip diff.

No negative NVH to note.

And tomorrow they will be at the track!!!

I also installed a UUC clutch stop. Had to cut a bit off to get the right mounting depth for the clutch switch to engage.

I gotta say I can't believe I didn't buy the clutch stop sooner.

Yea, I was asking because I still have mine apart. Mine appear to be worn out with, what I would consider, a huge lip. I have a micrometer and a caliper but nothing to measure bores correctly. My covers are worn more than the housing...

Idk I feel like the worn groove on mine was more than .1mm . The car accelerates much smoother after the procedure. I’d put it together and see what happens. The contacted area should be out past the seal anyhow. I’m thoroughly impressed with how nice the car drives after just 50+ miles of break in on the seals.

I also ran into some issues with valve cover removal due to my installed G.A.S. CCV the filter housing top 2 portions had to be removed. And I had to either remove the secondary air port manifold on the intake or remove the stud in the head closest to the CCV outlet on the valve cover. I chose to remove the stud.

Only complaint is the bit of oil that spills during service. It may be user error on my end but I’ve done 2 oil services on it since install and both times I seem to spill a bit when I lift the cap section off.

The unit is super easy to clean. And had been clean both times I serviced it. I just spray down the passages with a bit of brake clean, wipe it off and back together it goes.

Hey bimmerteknik,

Was looking at the second pic and noticed how the center was wearing far worst than the sides (guessing those are rears)
Have you noticed that with just those continentals or does it happen with all brands.

I only ask because my current DWS continental rears are worn like that as well, they are almost smooth in the middle 3-4 inches. It’s not over pressure cause I’ve checked multiple times. I’m running lower PSI on the rear to try to counter act that mechanism that’s driving that wear pattern.

If anybody has input as well, I would be interested to hear it.

Thanks

I too played with pressures. Even at the track I was as low as 31psi hot and still it wears the center more. These tires seem to have a very soft sidewall. Maybe that has something to do with it. They were still pretty impressive tires. Maybe the new Continental extreme contact sport will wear more evenly.

Soft sidewall is the case with the Conti DWS and the Conti DW. I had both of these tires in the past and had a similar wear patter on the rear tires ( stock size )

The center of the tire would wear out faster then the outside. I had tried different tire pressures as well thinking it was a tire pressure issue.

However I am now using the new Conti Extreme Contact Sport ( stock size ) with roughly 16,000 miles on them and they are wearing evenly.

This is possible as well since a 255 section width tire is right on the recommended width of a 8.5" wheel. It would be a better fit if it was a 9" wheel.

I bought a strut bar... from Megan Racing, 80.00. We had a left side “M Performance” decal left over from warrantying a right side decal, however they only come in sets. So instead of toss this thing I wrapped a cheap strut bar with it.

The logo unbolts and the adhesive was pretty easy to remove.

Here it is, I put the screws back in place. Pretty happy with it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180126/e364f3ba103d116ba47e9f0733957829.heichttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180126/08f59e93ef53719a5071ac256008c012.jpg

I like the intake a lot, it sounds pretty great. I initially wanted an AFE but couldn’t come to terms with the price tag. Now having seen a few in person I’m glad I got the injen. It just seems to blend into the bay better.

Speaking of, I should probably clean the intake filter soon [emoji51] it hasn’t been done since install.

The wrinkle coat they sell at parts stores (vht/duplicolor) holds up nicely and has a nice look to it. Very similar to the finish in the injen intake. I have used both quite a bit on other cars.

It sounds like an old creaky ship and it’s driving me absolutely crazy.

Any ideas from members here?

Front control arms did not fix it. FCABS are AKG and New. Front strut mounts were done with struts. Probably throwing inner and outer tie rods in tomorrow morning.

No, it’s not present when I leave my garage in the morning but it’s there when I get to work, I check it on speed bumps there. It’s not present when I leave work but it’s there when I get home, where I can check it pulling into my garage.

I guess that’s possible. I may just de-link the sway bar in the morning and see how it does.

I have noticed a few times going through a certain drive through that has about a 3” drop for my left wheel that it will make an audible clunk. I’ve driven through it back to back a few nights confirming the sound to be at the left front.

very interesting - i am experiencing the exact same issue, it started about a week ago - only when the car is warmed up.

after serious brain crunching hypothesizing i am wondering if it's the passenger side poly FCAB - which sits right next to the headers.

the weird part is that there is already a heat shield there from the factory.

but maybe rob is right... not enough lube? or maybe when they heat up, the tolerances aren't as good. i dunno.

I remember reading a thread here or on E46f where a guy had similar issues. I believe in his case the strut mount nuts were not fully torqued down and once the engine bay heated up, he would hear creaking sounds too. Start there maybe?

Use a Teflon or silicone based lube on the poly bushings. Aladdin magic lube comes in both Teflon and silicone. The silicone based is super sticky. Yes you'll see it's for pool equipment but I've been using it since the 80's for everything where you don't want to use a petroleum based lubricant. Any lube that can survive in chlorinated water is going to be good stuff...

I disconnected the sway bar, no change. In fact it may have gotten more frequent. I reinstalled the links and lubricated the bushings just to be safe.

Checked the torque on the strut nuts just to confirm the tightness.

Popped the cap off the nut area and I’m 99% sure i found the culprit.

Photo doesn’t do it justice but both sides have metal shavings in the bearing area

Yes these are the worst headers as far as install goes. My co-workers think I’m joking when I say I’m just dropping the motor out on the table if i ever have to remove them.

Sockethead

The twin screw its self it pretty massive and the manifolds before and after the blower are cast aluminum.
The box the whole kit came in was 90 lbs so I guesstimated 20lbs for the box, water pump heat exchanger small parts, etc.

It's their off the shelf tune that they've been emailing updates for... Been through 6 tunes already... And initially, they sent me the wrong injectors

I don't think they are very good at tuning the MS45 especially if you have any mods at all

Problems I'm having is idle, off idle and any time I try to rev match. Sometimes it will seem like it's going to die when stop quickly say, for a yellow light
Also, AJ is very difficult to work with if you ask for anything out of his range of thinking. For instance, it took me a while to convince him that my data logging and AFR was just as accurate as running the car on the dyno... If I dyno'd the car for every tune he sent, I'd be out of about $700 so far, he doesn't seem to take that into consideration.
Also since around the third tune, I get a check engine light and the code is 0x0000. Took it to the wife's dealership so they could hook it up their diagnostic since my diagnostic laptop is down but couldn't come up with anything

The whole experience has been very frustrating. I got the kit in the first place because I don't have a lot of time to work on the car while raising my twin boys and kit was supposed to be pretty much plug and play.

Sorry for the rant...

James, this might be a stupid question but do you do anything to your ordinary 3pt. belt when you’re using the Schroth, or do you just let it flap about against the B pillar? I just picked one up to hopefully keep my small frame planted in the seats better, but I suspect hearing that thing rattling in my ear at 120 would drive me nuts.

I’ll weigh them on Monday. They are pretty hefty.

The engine support is actually pretty light weight.

And I didn’t get to weigh the F30 wheels. Our used car guy grabbed them for something.

ZHP did great!

Unfortunately the M3 has scoring in cylinder 6 so it’s smoking and gonna need another tear down

Car looks good! We're twins. I'm interested in getting some seat time this summer with an instructor. Where would you recommend? I was looking on Tarheel BMW CCA's website and saw the classes at VIR. Any other options or places out there?

If you’re looking for track time and not autocross I’d highly recommend the Tarheel CCA events—especially the Summer HPDE on VIR North Course (the E46 really shines on VIR North). Having done some HPDEs with other chapters, other tracks, and other clubs, Tarheel CCA set a pretty high bar. The instructors are the best I’ve come across, VIR is a world class track with awesome corner workers and staff, and April + Paul run good, safe, instructive events. They’re not cheap, but in terms of instruction quality I’ve found you get what you pay for.

From my experience, and somewhat reinforced by what I’ve heard from other folks, some of the other groups are better suited for once you have some track experience under your belt. If you go let me know, I’ll definitely be there.

Sold the ZHP a few months ago toward the end of March. Replaced with an E70 X5 35d and focusing on the E36 M3.

I told the new owner about the site, not sure if he’s joined yet.

Congrats on the X5. I would like to own a diesel some day. It's on my bucket list.
