For me, it's mostly about the Bluetooth functionality - phone and music streaming. I returned my GA5150F shortly after purchase because that part of the unit was terrible!

Recently, I had a loaner 2016 328xi and they implemented the A2DP almost flawlessly. It worked well, I could select and scroll through all my playlists, plus it would display the song info, AND the artwork on the screen. Once an aftermarket unit does that, I'm in! I hope the Avant3 will do the same.

I'm okay without the artwork. As long as I can view the media info on the screen and use the steering wheel or head unit to skip and control playback I am good.

I've been doing a lot of research on upgrades for the Eonon and such and a few folks are saying there isn't a true Lollipop head unit available. They said the "5.1" units are some modified 4.4 unit.

For those of you that have a MTCB RK3188 unit, there is a "Lollipop" update available. That is, a unit with the quad core processor and an MTCB designation (which can be checked under About). Unfortunately my device is only a dual core version, and nobody is putting in the effort for this version.

So, those with Eonon GA5150F units can upgrade...

Ah yes - the hardware is produced and a bunch of manufacturers take that base hardware and customize it to their liking. Essentially, the hardware is similar between units, and as a result, certain ROMs would work on a variety of manufacturers' units as long as the hardware matches. They mainly go by MTCB/MTCD, processor type, and screen resolution.

I was laughing where I read that the music player spins the album art on the screen (for one of the players), and you CAN'T turn it off.

I would have ordered an Eonon GA6150F by now if it wasn't for one major disappointment: only 1GB of RAM. All the competitors seem to have the same amount. This isn't nearly enough for an Android device, especially Lollipop.

I guess I will wait for the Avant 3 then... the promise of more RAM is definitely intriguing.

Thanks to the very helpful (and unexpected) online chat feature on their site. I just went there to check out the pre-order page and someone named Tommy started a chat with me. He was able to answer all of my questions about the unit, and based on that I am convinced that the Avin unit is going to be better supported and better optimized than the competing units that cost half the amount.

I'm going with "you get what you pay for" this time around. I'm super picky, and the small issues that I have with my unit don't bother most people, but I'm not most people. :)

I also learned that the Avant 3 will have between 2-3GB of RAM (not yet finalized, they say) and "a newer version of Android". I'm happy with anything 5.0 and later.

I know that not many people who buy Avin units complain about them, so I'm also banking on that.

I guess I'll be selling a couple of things to make up for the steep cost...

FYI - they are considering raising the price from $799 to $899 - they did say that if you pre-order, you will get the $799 price.

Also, after reading a page on E46F, I found the Eonon GA6150F currently only has RED illumination for the keys, not adjustable, which does not match our interior illumination. They did say they expected the next batch to be customizable, so if you're looking at ordering one, I'd wait, or ask them first.

Although not necessary, a touch screen head unit like this is something that's been on my future purchase list to sort of bring my car up to date with modern technology, and Avin's been at the top in terms of functionality and looks.

I've been following the thread on e46f and damn do people hate dealing with Eonon. It has me looking at other options, like this one which looks to have the same specs, but I like the button layout better.

I put an AliExpress headunit in my Mazda and, while every function didn't work right out the of the box, the seller was very helpful in fixing my issues. It sounds like the seller for the above unit is attentive, which is huge when troubleshooting these things. The only questionable thing that I'm seeing is that you have to buy another harness to connect to the HK amplifier. I don't much care to do that.

I bought a 5150 and returned it for the reason that it didn't provide text info for bluetooth, which is all I really needed. They even provided me with a firmware update for some of the issues. The newer one has it, so I guess I'm going to buy it. Tired of waiting.

This suffers from the same problem my GA5150 suffers from: low resolution, and not enough RAM. I would NOT run a newer OS with only 1GB of RAM. Heck, even my unit with KitKat suffers from insufficient memory for my purposes. Let's not forget that the "real buttons" aren't very good - I have to press them twice most of the time for the presses to register.

I'm holding out for the Avin Avant 3 because it has better hardware than the competitors. I'm told it will have at least 2GB of ram, and the higher resolution screen. I haven't found any of the competitors that have the higher res screen AND more RAM in addition to the newer OS.

Well the information came directly from them when I asked, so... they better deliver a product worthy of such a long wait.
Ultimately, the longer the better... I'm not exactly happy about having to spend $700+ on a head unit anyway.

I hope they make a version like the $299 model in terms of aesthetics and UI. I like the no button style but with beefier hardware specs.

Just a quick update on the Avant-3 platform development.

The Avant-3 will be based on the Android 6.0 operating system.

We are currently working on integrating 4G LTE with support for all US frequencies. Your head unit will be able to have its own phone number, make and receive calls without ever being connected to your mobile phone. (You can still connect to your phone via Bluetooth still if you choose)

We hope to have development finished and shipping units out to those that have preordered by April.

We are considering a few different design for the all new BMW E46 Avant-3 unit and wanted to ask for your opinion and advice as to what you would like the new unit to look like. Please reply back to this email with your advice it will be greatly appreciated.

The three options mentioned above will be:


OPTION 1:

Create a completely new design that is nothing like anything that is available now. We are thinking of using the super wide 8.8" screen that is used in the new 2016 BMW 3 series.

It would still fit nicely in the same frame size as the current Avant2 unit. The screen will not protrude out like the AC9-BE46 9" model. So it will be a very nice and clean look but due to the wide screen the there will be no room for the buttons and no turn knobs on the left and right of the screen.

OPTION 2: <similar to the look and feel of the original BMW Nav head unit.

OPTION 3: Use the same design as the current Avant-2 unit.

I was just going to say I like Option 1 - a larger screen makes it easier to see things while on the road.
I'm going to contact them later today to make sure I'm still on their pre-order list. I still have the email receipt of my deposit. It would be a shame if I missed out on the first round of units because they didn't know I pre-ordered.

Yes, there is a discount. However, the hardware specs are exactly the same as the Xtrons unit I just purchased for $350, which is almost half the price of the Avin unit.

I can see some differences between the Avin and others, but they appear to be minor. The buttons, being long and thin (that's what she said), remind me of the Seicane units, but this one has a lot more functions fit onto the same amount of buttons, such as dedicated settings and microphone. The mounting also seems higher quality, more like an OE unit. It looks like it also has Apple CarPlay capability. Honestly, all of these minor changes don't make it worth that extra few hundred dollars to me, personally.

For this long wait and price point, I was expecting Nougat, with an even higher resolution screen and 3-4GB RAM. The resolution based on the pics actually looks like the LOWER resolution that I hated on my old unit!

I'm glad I made the move on the Xtrons unit.

I got the same email that BP rcvd. I am vacillating between this unit and the XTrons. Especially considering I will likely buy two if they are any good.

I am itching to find out about this from real-world users, will have to wait a little while longer.

Based on the other AVIN units I have seen on YouTube (I-drive replacements), they have quite a polished custom UI over the base Android OS. That combined with the fact that they ostensibly have made this unit look nearly identical to the OEM navi is a huge value-add to me.

If this unit is reliable and polished, then it's potentially worth the extra premium for me.

So which Xtrons did you get, the PB7646BP? It looks to have gone up.

Is there a thread on your experience with it. I've not had any experience with these aftermarket units.

No, I'm slacking... I keep meaning to write a review on it, but I'm too anal to write up something quick. I have to take lots of pics and review every aspect of it to meet my standards. I'm lazy. lol

I guess I searched the wrong thing at Amazon. At that price I'm tempted especially if your happy. I've been watching the Avin story unfold. I have a deposit with them but never got a notification, I stumbled across some forum posting alerting me to the Avant 3 release. Now I'll have to figure out which E46 will be the guinea pig.
