Hey Folks,

Need to make room for the new square setup I plan to run. I think these are nice quality forged lightweight wheels but they are not my cup o' tea in terms of style. There is some very slight rashing here and there, but the right rear certainly has some significant curb rash. Also, the previous owner didn't wash the car after using it and I think he ran some sort of competition oriented brake pad which embedded brake dust into the wheel finish. I worked on them for an hour so I am sure there is room for improvement. Otherwise, a fresh new powder coat / ceramic coat job would be nice :)

Tires are 225/40/18 Michelins (front) and 255/35/18 Dunlop 9000s (rear). Tires have lots of highway miles on them but safe to say they are not even close to being half way worn.

Front wheel 18x8 ET40 ~ 18.6 lbs each
Rear wheel 18x9 ET40 ~ 20.8 lbs each

Here's what they look like:

OZ's: 78 lbs of rotating mass.

Stock ZHP wheels: ~106 lbs of rotating mass.

I suppose that's a significant weight reduction. Improved acceleration, fuel economy, braking, etc. How does that sound for a sales pitch? ;-)

Thanks for the 'props', Marcus.

Yes....that is significant. The only concern I have (for me) is I am running 8" rim in rear, and would be hard pressed to get a 5mm spacer in there. I do not understand how guys are running such wide rims/tires. Must not be lowered.

Terry, Do you have a pic of the wheels on the car? Just trying to get an idea what the OZs look on a e46.

Mikey, here you go. Nice quote regarding the busy server by the way. Only one website that comes to mind...

Get your fenders rolled Dane. There's lots of room back there. My previous wheels were 9.5" wide ET45, new ones are 10" wide ET45 and I might get a 10mm spacer in there too.

Also, as you know, my car is plenty low; tucking tire at all 4 corners. The only difference in our setups is that my fenders are rolled.

I guess it's the offset + rolling that helps. I keep comparing to mine.....

Thanks Mikey. For the record I think my car sits on Bilstein PSS9s. Need to verify but that's what the previous owner listed and what I've seen from the brief glances. Every time I'm under the car I get out as soon as I can (1-car garage...).

To be honest, I think the 255s are a bit wide for the 9" wide wheel. I would put on a 245/40.. Stretches the tire a bit so it's more consistent in corners and also produces more clearance. No wheel/tire expert so please feel free to correct me.

I have 245's on an 8", and I agree....

Update, removed the wheels to verify offsets and took better pictures.

OFFSET on all four wheels is ET40.

The 255 tires in the back will be due for replacement. The front tires have plenty of life.

Terry do they need any refinishing or straightening or anything like that? How would you ship them out?

Just out of curiosity, can you let me know how much shipping would be out to Glendale/Peoria, AZ (85383)

Terry

They are straight. There is some curb rash here and there. I would honestly refinish them as your car looks really clean. If you're using them for track days I'd say they are perfect for them as they clean up well and are of course very light and very strong.

The previous owner left brake dust on them for too long and I just can't get that out. Maybe Kyle (M0nkey) has some tips/methods that I should try? Tried a pressure washer which actually removed some of the clear coat. Ceramic or Powder Coat is in order in my opinion. If I were to keep them I would ceramic coat them a gunmetal/anthracite/Titanium color. On top of that I think the coating fills and masks the curb rash here and there.

So I did a simple UPS Ground calculation to a commercial address in Peoria 85383 and it came out to $15.77 / wheel = ~ $64 total. To a residential address = $18.40 / wheel = ~$74. I did not factor in insurance. There's also a good chance I can get a 30% discount on the shipping as my friend owns a shipping store.

Oh, Terry, you would have to have a set of Superleggeras in my size...PM sent.

FWIW, Superleggeras aren't forged; they're low-pressure cast and shot-peened. But, they're strong and light, and they FTW, IMVHO!

Hmm they kinda remind me of these, http://g35-coupe.info/images/wallpapers/G35-coupe-351561.jpeg

I was so close to "settling" on a G35 coupe after hunting for an E46 for so long.

How are the tires on these currently? I'm interested since I need to tires soon anyways, might be a good chance to upgrade as well.

Rears are worn and would need to be replaced right away. Came to realize this only after removing them and thoroughly inspecting them. Was tough to see when I originally posted as I have a 1 car garage ....very cramped and dark.

The front Pilot Sports have plenty of tread on em'.

Thank you Terry, was hoping tires were in better shape. Anyhow, the wheels looks very nice, not to mention again, substantially lighter than the OEM wheels.

GLWS! I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet...

NICE!

Did you feel any difference from your older wheels? I'm talking about accel / deccel response, etc. :) Did you re-balance the front tires? What size tires in the rear? I went narrower with my new wheels...9" wide all the way around with 245/35s.

Also, your car is stunning. I need to work on making my car look as tidy as yours!

Well it's about time! :-) Congrats, looks great! Whaddaya think?

We had to buy a new lawnmower (Honda 217), and had a few large bills due, so I opted to hold off on the tire purchase for a pay period.

So far, I LOVE the wheels! I think the pictures speak for themselves. The car actually feels lighter (go figure; it lost 7.7# at each front corner, and 8.4# at each rear corner). Subjectively, acceleration feels markedly quicker, and braking feels significantly lighter. Handling feels nimbler and quicker. Road noise is MUCH less than with my aging Potenza RE040s, and wet performance is sooooo much better! :). The one surprise is cornering: where the RE040s (and PS2s, AND Dunlop winters) had a solid, progressive feel to them in hard cornering, the Pilot Sports give me far less input. Breakaway comes without warning, and also comes at lower speeds than with other performance tires I've driven. Also, while transiting one particular set of railroad tracks, my front end actually 'hopped' to the left a little! I'm not sure if the tires were to blame, or if the stock suspension damping is just tuned for bricks.

Cleaning is, naturally, a dream. LOVE IT!!!! I'm tempted to ditch my 135s, which gave me new appreciation for low-dust pads...

...on the other hand, though, my dirty-grey calipers are almost embarrassing, now that they're very visible. :(

Terry--balance on the fronts was very good straight off the UPS truck, and my installer recommended leaving it well-enough alone. He was also a fan of the Oz SLs ("Those are good wheels."). I went with 255/35 tires to keep the speedometer behavior unchanged As for the front tires, I was amused at the right sidewall condition, as it appears the previous driver parked using the Braille method! ;)

Great write up, I feel as if I know exactly how they feel! Sounds awesome, glad you like them. Thanks for the detail. Good to see them go from one mafioso to another. Fun seeing them on Terry's car and now pics on yours!

Glad you like them. I think they were really nice wheels and if I were to hang on to them I was ultimately planning on re-finishing them. It's not that they were bad, but I've been on this warpath to de-(insert previous owners' names)ify the car. Yes, one of those front tires sidewall seams made me chuckle..What on earth? Missing chunks. Oh boy.

Impressive weight savings!
