So I was replacing a bulb in the dash and figured I would take a look at this switch that was beside my dimmer. PO said there were lights wired up to the floorboard at one time. There were some wires spliced into the dimmer wires that ran to the on/off switch and everything was done very half hazardly. I disconnected them and at one point the two wires touched. When they touched the lights went off, I had them on at that time and was watching the cig lighter. I taped up the exposed wire and got rid of the on/off switch wires, but now the lights are not working. Did I blow a fuse or something? I don't know which fuse I would even check. Do any of the electrical guys have any advice?

I would suspect a fuse first.

Forgot to clarify that it was on the e36.
Is that for e36 or e46?

What fuse would it be?
It is all lights that are on with headlights. So cig lighter, ash trays, etc

Drove home from work with no dash lights :facepalm.
Had to use the map light at one point to check speed.

Wish I could help, but this is beyond my limited knowledge.

That said, I almost never look at the speedometer, even at highway speeds. Just kind of...go haha

I have no idea how to tell which is which since I don't have a diagram or anything. But they are the old style fuses so I could see it was blown right on top. That was way easier than pulling until I found one broken

I didn't understand which fuse was which. My fuse box actually had some sort of labeling on their but I could not find out the fuse numbers.

For example "adjustment driver seat" is fuse 65, but how do I know which fuse is 65? :scratching head

The diagram should be laid out like your fuse box. You can just count over since you know top left is #1. Maybe it doesn't work like that on E36.

I don't think it does. Maybe I am retarded, but I'll get a picture of it and update post after work.
