View Full Version : WTB: ZHP sedan w/ blown or no engine!

Hey all, I'm looking for a ZHP with a bad engine. I found the PERFECT candidate for an s54 swap about a year ago, but ended up getting a steal on a ZHP engine with 26k miles on it. Car was immaculate and the swap went great, but I miss the car like crazy and wish I would've gone s54. I've been looking on searchtempest and here every day, but I know some of the mafia'ites have a great eye for finding ZHPs. If anyone runs across one, could you please let me know? Thanks! Must be a sedan and clean title. Auto/manual doesn't matter.

just buy a running car and sell the motor. a lot easier than stressing and looking all the time.

A running car is significantly more than one without a working engine, even if you factor in selling the old motor. M54's aren't worth much...

they're worth something. and a running car is a lot easier to find than a clean car with a dead motor. you could be waiting two years to find one.
it's only money. you'll make more...

Ditto. Sure I could spend more for a running one and sell the engine but I'm okay with waiting and I think it's a lot more rewarding in the end to find just the right car for the swap!

No limit as long as it's a fair deal. My last car was about as nice of a ZHP roller as could be had, so I know about what I'd like to pay but I'll consider anything.

I thought price was a concern? If it isn't, then I'd just buy any ZHP that tickles your fancy and go the route Peter suggested.

Haha I guess it's all in my head! Price really isn't an issue, but I would have a hard time justifying the cost of a perfectly good running ZHP just to take the whole drivetrain out and sell it for a loss. Ultimately that may be the best option though, as it's proving to be very hard to find what I'm looking for. Should've gone s54 last time :(

Take a look at the imola for sale for $5k with a bad engine. It's a long way away but you could probably work it out.

OP I'm currently collecting info on an S54 swap for a sedan. Don't have the car yet but probably will pick one up within the next year. Anyway, I always thought I could simply do a successful swap using any e46 sedan. Would there be any reason why a ZHP would make it easier?

I have a sedan that I'm buying back from insurance, but it will have a salvage. I'm selling the motor and tranny to someone who is going to drop it in an e30. So they say
After seeing that ad on CL I'm thinking maybe I should buy a zhp with blown motor and swap mine into it. You better buy the one in Raleigh soon, it's very close to me, even closer to my car.

Check the laws in your state. In VA the title is not branded/salvage if the car is more than 5 years old or has a market value of less than $10k. I sold Colin's car today with a clean title...

Dude! thanks so much for posting this. I desperately tried to get a hold of him a few months ago last time it was posted, and he provided a description for why it was relisted that might possibly be true. I just called again with no answer but we'll see if he replies to my voicemail. that is a STEAL. looks to be NB too.

I'm in Wilmington, NC. The car is in Dunn, NC. Your post said you did not want salvage title, but this car will have one when bought back. Still, it is in really good shape and all parts are oem and up do date on maintenance. If my mechanic buys the motor and tranny from me then you could get a really good deal on the shell. I'd love to see a s54 dropped in it. You would have to agree to give me first dibs if you ever sold it though [emoji3]
All damage is front end, not sure on the extent though.

That is terrible from the perspective of future buyers... Good for you though.

Do ZHPs tend to make better donors for S54 swaps than non-ZHP cars? Are they structured any differently?

No, I just would rather do it in a ZHP.

I didn't think so, but I'm new to e46s. I know the subframe is a big deal on the M3 (is it as serious on a non-M?) I just thought maybe if a ZHP can handle a bit more power it might make a better donnor than a 323. Ive actually got my heart set on an s54 sedan in the future, and joined here just to ask that question lol

The subframe issues mainly plagued the early E46's (1999, 2000, maybe some 2001) and the M3. Non-M E46's from 2002-2006 aren't really affected by the issue, though there are some outliers. Every once in a while you'll hear about someone who falls into the 2002-2006 non-M category who has the issue, but those are rare and not nearly as common as the 1999-2001 and M3 occurrences.
Your best bet would be a 2004-2005 sedan.

I GOT ONE! It's an 05 schwarz black/black leather auto sedan with 118k in great shape! I'm headed to England for the semester but I've got it tucked away until I return. Thanks guys, I love this forum.
