Hi all I am new to the Mafia, I have actually looked at this car, it looks great and drove awesome. I am hoping to get with the seller tomorrow and take it to a shop to have it checked out. Any advice? I am replacing my mommy mobile with a fun ride as my last daughter is about to be 16. My husband and I are car people/enthusiasts/DIYers.

Hi and welcome. Pay for a PPI and read thru the "before you buy" section here. Keep us posted.

Rev the engine and listen for chain (Vanos) rattle. Know that those wheels are not stock.

Since the car has a rebuilt title, I'd make sure you get info on the accident and that the mechanic takes extra care looking at any frame damage.

As far as advice, test drive it and definitely get a PPI. Test the clutch for slippage (put it in a high gear at low speed and accelerate hard). Try and use a BMW-oriented mechanic for the inspection so that they're familiar with the ins and outs of BMWs and the E46 platform. Check everything, windows, electronics, stab the brakes to test for wheel judder, etc. Be very thorough.

Clutch seemed good but I will check things more thoroughly. Not sure if I should go to the dealer or an Indy shop. I live about 40 miles from the car so I am not completely familiar with the area.

I did know the wheels weren't stock. Current owner doesn't know about accident details just that it was front end damage. I thought maybe a wheel was damaged but who knows.

Search bimmershops.com and see if you can find anything local to the car. I personally prefer BMW specialist indy mechanics to BMW dealerships. I believe they're more thorough, but that's just been my experience.

Thanks I hadn't heard of that sight. I figured Indy would be better especially for an older car.

I completely concur with this.

Edit: another option that is advertised monthly in the Roundel and is supported by the BMW CCA: http://www.bimrs.org

I went to look at a 2006 330i 6mt from a private seller and he wouldn't let me drive it outside of his neighborhood, seriously?!?!?! Good luck with that sale dude.

Whole thing sounds fishy I'd stay away. If a seller can't be up front about something this basic how could you trust anything else he had to say about the car?
