View Full Version : Been gone for awhile, sad to be back...

So, life has been busy and I have just not been on here in months. Unfortunately, I am back on for some sad news. An old lady pulled out in front of me and I t-boned her at 40mph. I'm pretty sure the car is totaled, and at this point wouldn't want the car anymore if it was fixable. I'm hoping to settle up with insurance easily, but I am prepared for the worst. I have most my receipts, so that should give me close to a grand, but I will have the typical battle of trying to prove my car is worth more than a regular 330i.
I have a few questions.
1: from the looks of the damages what would be a realistic price to buy it back so that I could turn some sort of profit on parts and not have all this get crushed.
2: What are y'all's opinions on an e36 m3 DD? Reliable?

Holden,
So sorry to hear about what happened. I'm glad that you are okay and I hope that the lady involved in the accident is also okay. This is very sad to see. Would you not want another zhp?
I'm not sure what you would have to pay to buy it back, but I do know that most insurance companies give people a generous amount for totaled cars. I know several people who have totaled their cars and the insurance company gave them much more than what the car is worth. Most insurance companies will never give you less than what the car is worth. They are usually pretty good at that.
I have a friend who daily drives an e36 m3 sedan. From what I have seen, it's not a bad idea. I don't really see why DD an e36 m3 would be of any issue.
Damn, that is quite an impact and I'm glad you are OK... As you said I'm pretty sure it's gonna be totaled...
Good luck and keep us posted...

Sorry to hear and glad you are okay.
Take good care of yourself.
That was a pretty good hit but looks like not enough to blow the airbags. Probably just missed the sensors.
As long as you are okay, the car can be replaced.
Year and miles on the vehicle will play a part in the final decision.
Keep us updated.

Also glad to hear you and the old lady are okay. Interested and hoping that you get a good deal off the car from your insurance.

Depends on what you've got to part the car out parts wise? From what I can see, outside shadow line trim/wheels/possibly headlights
Sorry to hear, definitely sucks but I'm sure you'll bounce back

Man...that's identical to my last ZHP, makes me sad to look at it. Glad you're okay, and sorry for your loss! I had a '99 Estoril Blue M3 for 2 years as my daily, great freakin car, never had any issues and it had almost 180k on the clock when I sold it. That was about 8 years ago, and I still miss that car to this day... Happy hunting, E36 M3 has my vote :hi

Damn, sorry to hear but I am glad that you are alright!
I have no idea what it takes to buy it back. When I totaled my 2003 330Ci with 82k miles, my insurance paid me close to what I paid for the car 18 months earlier. Have hope and hold out for a good deal.

bummer, man. glad everyone is OK. as vas said, cars can be replaced.
as for the car though, likely totalled, but hard to say what the insurance company will say. definitely worth buying back and parting out.

I lost my ZHP in an accident as well, and speaking from experience.. If you have full coverage and have no prior history you will be well taken care of. Im happy to hear you are both okay, I'm currently in a lawsuit battle with the individual I was involved in the accident with and it just opened up a whole can of worms I dont need at the moment -_-...
Most insurance companies will let you keep the car, I was fortunate enough to be able to have the car left in front of my house by the flat bed who took it (Good friend of my family)... And i had to stare at it in pieces every day for almost a year until I stripped it apart.
I made a great amount of money back, but had a hard time convincing people that certain items on the car are worth more than they think.
I hope it all works in your favor, these cars are a different kind of special in certain aspects.
Best of luck,
Brandon

OP, sorry to hear the news. I can tell you had a super clean car. How many miles on the clock ?

Thanks guys, I have missed this family. Main reason I stayed away is it just kinda sucks you in! I couldn't casually come on the Mafia lol.
As far as parting out the car, many things are in good shape.
Wheels need refinishing but look good from far, and true and straight. Rear bumper was repainted 3 weeks ago at dealership:facepalm, silver cube, BMW performance exhauste(that's coming off regardless[emoji6]), and Preto much all of the car. My only issues were paint fading on hood from old clear bra and front bumper scratches. Headlights are actually a year old, but halogens. They might be good, just need new lenses.
I'm in contact with two guys with e36 m3s already, Haha.
Option 1 is black 95 coupe with s50, 106,000 original miles, many new parts including head gasket and cooling system refresh. Also has some goodies. Unfortunately stock wheels :meh This is what I'm am leaning towards for sure. $6000
Option 2 is black 98 coupe with s52, 200,000 miles, all original besides kosei wheels, and a laundry list of maintenance records from past 11 years. $5900

i'm going against the grain here with Option 2. :)
reason being: S52 (the extra torque is noticeable), stock (no molestation), and maintenance records. when the car is 20 years old, 106K or 200K does not mean much - it's the upkeep.
drive both - best thing you can do.

I think 50 and s52 both have their pros and cons. Option 1 does have konis and a lot of other stuff. It does seem to have a lot of records, but I am gonna drive both. Problem is both are 2 hours in opposite directions.
As far as the 135's go. I think I might just put them on the e36. I did a google image search and they look pretty good.

New headgasket makes me think of prior cooling system issues.
Why not look into an E36 m3 sedan? Unless you are strictly wanting a coupe.

I haven't seen one anywhere near me. I'm trying to keep cost down too so I can have some extra money and pay off debt.

I'm with the rest of the crowd. The cars are old enough that it comes down to maintenance and how they were cared for. Test drive them and work from there.
Also keep me in mind for that BMW Performance exhaust/muffler :drool

I have to agree with this. The E46 is a better daily driver.

Yes. Driving experience in my opinion in the E36M is much more connected but the ZHP is wayyy more refined as a daily driver

I don't have the same experience regarding the E36 being "much more" connected. My ZHP is extremely sharp and agile. Suspension makes a difference. I'm comparing this to my friend's 95 M3. It's all about what you do to it. :thumbsup

I looked at the 97 today. Looked really good for what I thought it was going to look like. Needs the trunk fixed and passenger door won't open from outside, but that isn't too major.
I hear what everyone is saying about miles and engine difference, but the 95 also has a lot of nice things going for it like konis and upgraded cooling system etc. the 97 is bone stock. That could be good because I know it's not molested, but it would be a lot of money to do all those things.
After looking at the one today I definitely like it more than I thought. Like D1ESAL said, the interior falls apart, but that is fixable. It's just too bad it can have the bullet proof pillar quality of the e46 :sarcasm!
I think either one is a solid project cosmetically, but I don't mind that. I just want solid mechanics.
One more thing, the 97 has electronic non vadar seats, the 95 has manual vadar seats. The driver is torn up, but I wouldn't mind recovering with some e30 m3 evo 3 fabric! FTW!

You're right. I would say at this point there is no fabric left except maybe some BMW parts hoarder holding up a role in case of Armageddon. This is the next best thing https://www.bimmercloth.com/product/e30-m3-evo-3-interior-seat-cloth/
The lower mileage car turned out to be crap. He finally sent me a copy of his PPI after he blew a radiator hose on the way to show me the car. Not buying that thing.
I'm looking into a few others that are nice.

Bought a car right outside of Charleston, SC Friday night and drove it back home. 7 hours on the road plus another hour to get it notarized after hours.
I'll throw a pic up here and make a project thread. Someone remind me again where to post a project/maintenance thread...
