Taking inspiration from all the project/maintenance threads on the mafia, I thought I'd start my own. I think this is the best way to keep track of all the maintenance done and also be able to share it with all of the mafia.

1st owner -
Leased on 11/25/2005 from BMW of Palm Springs, Palm Springs, CA. Had it for about 2 years and 2 months and 53671 miles (lot of miles for a little over 2 years). Car was sold at an auction back to the dealership, according to CarFax at least (leased car going to auction and dealership buying it back? :dunno).

2nd owner -
Bought it on 09/08/2008 from BMW of Palm Springs, Palm Springs, CA and got it shipped all the way to New York. Had the car for about 7 years and about 42k miles before listing it for sale. The 2nd owner was actually a member of the zhpmafia, but not a very active one. I actually realized he was a member after I bought the car from him.

Here is the for sale ad he posted - http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?13265-FS-2006-BMW-330Ci-ZHP-6-Speed-NJ&highlight=2006

3rd owner -
That would be me :hi
Purchased on 09/05/2014 with 95,513 miles

Purchase Story -

I was due to graduate in August 2012, so I started to search for a ZHP towards the end of July. Found a few in SC (I went to Clemson University in Greenville, SC) but none were really 'special'. I had about a month before I had to start working so I wanted a zhp before that. I was spending time in New Jersey at my sister's place so I was looking at ZHP's in NJ. Found a 2006 zhp with about 95k miles on it for $14k, it looked really good so I contacted the seller and set up a PPI.

The PPI came out OK and the tech told me, it needed new FCAB's, intake boots and power steering hose line. I was sort of disappointed as I thought the zhp did not need anything in the near future. Tried to negotiate the price but the seller wouldn't budge. The tech at the shop told me he would not give more than $13.5k. So I started my search but I could not find any zhp's that were to my liking. So after searching for about 2 weeks, I decided to buy the zhp I looked at earlier, cause I did a little math and figured it would cost me about $600 to transport all of my stuff from NJ to IN. I contact the seller again and to my horror, he said he had a seller lined up and would let me know if he backed out. 2 days later he tells me the car is mine for $14k.

Here is the first picture I took of my ZHP (not a good one but it's the first pic I took of my ZHP :)) -

Getting a maintenance/project thread together feels good. It's nice to look back on what you've done and when.

Welcome, new guy! How'd you get to 471 posts so quickly?? :biggrin

A question, out of curiosity - if the previous owner had changed the trans and diff fluids at 90K'ish miles, what made you decide to change them again at 98K'ish miles? Don't see any harm in it, just wondered what your thought process was... Nice list!!

Haha, it's easy it took me just a year and half [emoji14]

I wasn't sure which fluid he used and I heard royal purple wasn't good for the gearbox and diff so I just changed it to red line just in case he went with royal purple

Edit: and it did make gear shifting a bit better and sort of eliminated the whine I heard from the diff during slow speed U turns...

March 4th 2016 - 114938 miles - Installed Gruppe M intake

As I posted earlier I finally installed the Gruppe M intake after purchasing a replacement filter from this link -
http://www.xposed.com.au/k-n-air-filter-rf-3301a.html

I had a friend of mine look over the old filter that i got with the intake and we both agreed that it would harm the engine as some parts of the filter just had meshing with the filter material completely gone. The vendor mentioned in the link above is in Australia, so shipping took about a week. Surprisingly though the filter was shipped to me by Gruppe M from Japan!

Here are a couple of pictures of the package and the filter before install -

24905
24906

The install went pretty smoothly and took about 10 minutes. I was honestly was expecting the intake to be quite a bit more louder than what it is, but am not disappointed one bit. I now drive with my windows down so I can just listen to the induction noise. As Shawn said, my MPG is taking a hit cause I try to keep the engine at higher revs so I can enjoy the sound, but I am not complaining. Overall quite happy with the Gruppe M intake :)

Good stuff, interested to hear what you think of the difference with the new M3 mounts. They're on my list along with M3 motor mounts. You might also consider two small o-rings for your oil change. Some other members mentioned you should change them every other oil change (part no. 11427549573 (2x)).

April 09, 2016 - 116010 miles

Installed the M3 transmission mounts. Overall was not a bad job at all, took about 2 hours to accomplish it. I used the DIY guides posted by BMWCurves (William) posted a few posts earlier.

First I put the car on jack stands. Note that the rear of the car does not necessarily have to be on jack stands but I decided to because I wanted to inspect the differential bushings. The removal of the old bushings was easy and I was able to use a socket wrench to loosen them out. The bushings seem to be original ones and seem to be in pretty good shape for the age and mileage. Didn't really need to replace them but decided to since I got them out.

Old tranny bushings -
25437

New M3 tranny bushings -
25438

Old vs New -
25439

I noticed that the new M3 bushings did not have the BMW stamp on them but the plastic cover in which they came on had the p/n and seemed to be original BMW. I will contact ECSTuning and see what they say but I already installed them. Also the new M3 tranny mounts have the studs, which are used to secure the mounts to the body (upper side of the mounts), longer than the original mounts. This caused a small issue when installing them as the normal socket was not deep enough and there was not enough space to use the deep socket :facelpalm . So I had to use a wrench to tighten it down and installing the other parts was pretty straight forward.

Also had a helping hand for the DIY :)
25442

Dave (just_george) and I talked about replacing the tranny mounts together at his place when the weather improved but you never really know what life has in store....

I drove the car today and what I noticed was I feel a lot more vibrations through the seat, especially when the engine is between 1000-2000 RPM. On the plus side I do think the gear shifting feel is a little better. Overall i think it is better in terms of performance but worse in terms of NVH.

Do you have a short shifter installed? I'm considering the M3 transmission mounts because I'm looking to minimize the occasional difficulty getting into first and reverse.

Installed the OEM AUX cable (finally!) with the help of a friend. The input cable was drilled into the sun glass holder/box right below the AC controls. I thought this would look clean and I can hide the aux cable in the box if I am not using it.

I went on a nice long road trip this past weekend. Left Columbus, IN friday and reached Gatlinburg, TN at midnight where I met a friend who also owns a zhp. Woke up next day early morning to catch the sun rise in the mountains and take some nice pics of our zhps...

Next drove to Tail of Dragon, which was really good fun and eventful. I say eventful cause I saw a biker crash into an SUV right in front of me. If there was no SUV in front me, he would've crashed into me. The bike's front forks broke in half but luckily the biker was fine, he was shaken a bit but not even a scratch thankfully...

Next drove to Ashville, NC through Blue Ridge Parkway, which was very scenic and beautiful. Had a nice coffee in downtown Ashville and drove to Greenville, SC for saturday night. Left Greenvile, SC sunday afternoon to reach back home at Sunday late night...

Using this DIY -

Also, waiting to install the rear strut reinforcement plates I picked up from Shawn (ELCID86)...

I didn't notice anything either when I did mine, but I don't think you are supposed to notice much. I assume it's more for keeping the fluid and the lines clean in the steering system than anything else.

I recently drove a friend's Zhp and his steering felt so much better (read lighter, with no loss of feel) and he said he recently flushed the fluid... So I was hoping my steering would be lighter after the fluid flush,
but nope... No complaints though, I enjoy the way it is now...

Does your steering feel heavy? Mine became heavier with the Z4M FCABs, although I like the current feel very much.

If the steering feels loose in some way you may consider getting the steering coupler replaced. I've heard it's a relatively cheap and inexpensive piece of maintenance.

Yup, feels quite heavy...

Ya, its on my list of to do things... Will probably do it when it's time to get an alignment, so I don't have to shell out $150 twice...

Interesting... I haven't really thought about that cause the belts are 30k miles old were replaced by the PO just before I bought the car... The steering has been heavy since I bought it...

Ok. It's an easy job. And it's a common part broken when novice repairs are being conducted on the suspension of E46. No one expects that to attach to the control arm.

June 18, 2016 - 122316 miles

Replaced the Engine Oil and filter, after 5500 miles. Will also send oil to Blackstone labs for analysis as my oil consumption has gone up recently. Not entirely sure why, hopefully this report can shed some light :fingerscrossed

Also replaced the linkage connecting the control arm and the headlight level sensor. This was broken back in September when I was doing the suspension refresh. Should have replaced it much earlier but this part was always out of stock when I tried to buy it along with other parts and I did not want to spend $6 shipping on a $15 part. Anyway now I can drive at night with much more confidence, because with the broken lever the headlights were always pointing down. Pretty easy job to replace, just 2 bolts, one on the control arm and one on the sensor.

Also replaced the windshield wipers.

July 3, 2016 - 124001 miles

Installed the much wanted UUC Corsa TSE3 exhaust that I purchased from Rob (sockethead).
This was something I wanted to get on my car for about a year now. Myself and a couple of friends were planning to go to Charleston, SC for the 4th July weekend and when posted that he was looking for someone to trade, I thought to myself "What are the odds? It was meant to be" lol. So I contacted Rob and after confirming the coupe and sedan exhaust are the same, we worked out a schedule.
Rivkah and I reached Rob's place at 830AM Sunday morning (July 3rd) and while the car was cooling down on Rob's driveway, we headed for breakfast, Kirsten and the twins (Matthew and Mason) joined us too. Once we came back, all 3 of us started with unbolting the exhaust on my car first. Overall it came out pretty easy, the only issue was the removing the nuts where the exhaust connects to the headers. Rob was able to get them out without much difficulty by using a torch to heat them. Here is a pic of my exhaust removed -
26444

Next we worked on removing the exhaust on Rob's car. It was pretty easy as Rob had already disconnected the exhaust and the headers as he had just installed Bimmer Brake Gen 3 header on his car. Here is a pic of the Corsa exhaust we removed from Rob's car -
26445

First we installed the Corsa exhaust on my car, again no hiccups and it was pretty straightforward. Once it was installed I started her up and took her for a spin around the block and I couldn't stop grinning :biggrin

Next we installed the stock exhaust on Rob's car, again no issues with the install. In fact the only problem for us was working on a black car at near 100F temperatures and it was also very humid, other than that it was all pretty straightforward.

Overall it was a fun day of wrenching :)

The trip to Charleston and back was about 1500 miles and car ran like a champ. At first I was not supposed to take my car but when I saw the opportunity to get the Corsa exhaust from Rob, I decided to take my car instead of my friend's. A small review of the Gruppe M intake and the UUC TSE3 Corsa exhaust combination -

I had a taste of this combination at the 2015 zhpmafia re-union in Cincinnati when BP offered to take me and Rivkah in his car on a small drive. I immediately wanted to have them both on my car since then and started looking for them ever since. I installed the Gruppe M intake earlier this year in March and now that I have the Corsa exhaust too, thought I would write my views on them.

One thing I did not want the exhaust to do was make the car sound more powerful than it is. I was a little worried that the Corsa exhaust might do that but since I have had it for about a week now, I can safely say that it is not the case.

At Idle -
The exhaust has a nice rumble to it at idle almost muscle car-ish I think and in a good way. The best part is doing a cold start and waiting for the RPM to settle down.

At city driving speeds -
When the car is moving in traffic and in city speeds it sounds really nice and it does give out an occasional pop and a burble. You hardly hear the intake at low RPM's.

At highway speeds -
There absolutely zero drone. The car sounds pretty much stock at constant highway speeds. But press on the throttle slightly and it reminds you that it is there.

At WOT -
At WOT and below 4000 RPM the exhaust sounds amazing, I found myself giving snap throttle inputs just so I can hear the exhaust, BUT go past 4000 RPM and it is all Gruppe M. You hardly hear the exhaust note above 4000RPM and the more you climb up the revs the more louder the intake gets. It would be interesting to hear how the exhaust sounds on a stock intake but I must say that the combination of the these 2 is pretty much perfect and they compliment each other quite well, if that makes sense lol

One thing I noticed was how light the Corsa exhaust was compared to stock. It definitely shaved a lot of pounds. I honestly haven't noticed any performance gains but rev matching is much easier now. Not sure if its in my head or if others have experienced this too but I clearly feel a difference in how the engine responds to snap throttle inputs when trying to rev match.

I liked the look of the yellow fog lamps on a few cars I've seen here so I decided to give it a try. Bought a sheet of yellow laminex film from Amazon for about $5 and used a pair of scissors to cut the fog lamps profile. It looks fine from a few feet away but I will redo it soon as there are some bubbles on the surface, like the bubbles on a cell phone screen when the screen protector isn't installed properly. But overall I'm happy with how it turned out...

I also really like the ///M colors on the grille. I have it on mine and still think it looks a bit much but my car needs a little accent color here and there.

Have been travelling for the last 3 weeks so did not get a chance to update the project thread.

127662 miles - August 25th, 2016

Replaced the radiator with BMW OEM #17119071517 as preventive maintenance. This was the only part from the cooling system that needed to be replaced, all the others were replaced before the car had 100k miles. It was a pain to get the hoses off and I needed to be extra careful as I had to reuse them. Did have a hiccup when I was bolting the expansion tank mounting plate to the new radiator, I had rounded off a Torx head screw :facepalm I bought a bolt extractor thinking I could use it to remove it but the screw was too small, so I had to improvise. I used a hacksaw and converted the torx head to a flat head and was able to secure the mounting plate to the new radiator :ninja It was not the done with a lot of finesse but it worked. From then on it did not take long to put everything back together. Everything seems to be working fine, went on a 1500 miles road trip and the coolant level did not drop.

They also recommended adding a fuel system drier and injector cleaner... anyone here ever use those?

CCV (again :crying ) + O2Pilot mod
VANOS + VCG
Engine Mounts - M3 upgrade
New rear tires - if I decide to buy Conti's DWS06 again
RTABSs
CSB/Guibo
Fuel Pump - bought already waiting for the one in the car to fail
Subframe bushings - probably a long shot but let's see
Wheels - unlikely unless I find a good deal on used Apex Arc 8's or square set of BMW style 68's (8.5" width)
Brake pads and Rotors

Don't think anything else needs attention but we will see :)

Right now I just water the car down and apply car shampoo using a wash mitt but I was thinking this would be better.

Thats a nice list. I got the rear suspension overhauled late last year and it made such a huge difference. Don't think you need to attack the subframe bushings - per Peter those do not wear out as much as the RTABs or the upper/lower (outer) ball-joints.

I also have VANOS + oil line (plus VCG) and brake overhaul as part of my 2017 list. The brake overhaul will consist of pads, rotors, calipers and lines.

Thanks! I keep hearing clunks from the rear end occasionally and I already replaced all 3 diff bushings. I will first tackle the csb/guibo and see if that makes a difference, if not the most likely culprits I guess are the subframe bushings...

Ive been noticing something different driving the Zhp recently and I am hoping you guys can help me figure it out.
The car is being upset by bumps on the road a lot more than usual. It feels kinda soft and floppy, this wasn't the case say a few months ago. It doesn't roll any more or less but the body sort of feels loose. I also haven't really changed the damper setting on the koni yellows recently. I've replaced the FCAB's and front end link about 30-35k miles ago and I haven't changed any rear suspension bits apart from the dampers but am planning to do so,namely rtabs and end links.
So any ideas what might cause this?

it's such a subjective thing... hard to diagnose without driving it.

how many miles on your car?

i would start with adjusting the damping on the yellows, just one click stiffer. see what happens.

then, i would replace the RTABs and outer control arm bushings - if they are still original, yeah, you definitely want to replace them.

Car has 1388xx miles. Ya I agree, really have to drive the car. I'm having to give a lot more steering input as the car doesn't feel stable. I was thinking maybe it could be the steering guibo/coupler as well.

Ya I am planning on replacing all the rear suspension parts minus the subframe and diff bushings soon.

138K on the stock RTABs? yep, those need to be changed. ;)

go with the M3 units for the upper and lower outer control arm bushings, too.

and yes, the steering coupler is a good idea too. :)

When you say it's not stable, is it tramlining? I haven't followed your thread in a while, what condition are your tires in? I had Bridgestone's and Dunlop's tramline really bad towards the end of their life.

I changed my RTAB at 141k and they were still in great shape. You can stick a pry bar in there and check to see how easy it moves, they're designed to move but if it's sloppy, then you'll know they are bad.
Also, did you use OEM LCAB? It varies but I've gotten as little 40k out of OEM

Don't think it's tramlining as I'm noticing this only when going over uneven surfaces and it's vertical movement rather than lateral. But my rears tires are quite close to being worn though, I have dws 06s and I can barely see the W on them now.
I've used lemforder fcabs and replaced them about 35k miles ago.

Tramlining is worse over uneven surfaces especially when the road surface is crowned or worn

Oh ok. Guess Il start with checking rear suspension bushings and replace them. Was planning on buying new 17" wheels and tires anyway as I will be moving to Michigan in about 2 month. Don't think the 135s will last very long on those roads.

Replaced the OFHG, that was leaking. The old gasket was still intact but was very brittle and quite flat, so was leaking quite a bit. Replacing it was not too difficult.

29620

Also flushed the Brake fluid, as it was done almost 50k miles ago by the PO. The fluid as expected was quite dark and was definitely overdue. Drove the car today but did not notice any significant difference in braking performance or pedal feel.

Also since the weather was so good, I decided to wash the car. Just thought I would let everyone know that I have been using AMMO NYC Hydrate Paint Moisturizer and I quite like it. A few squirts on a microfiber towel when wiping the car down and it removes the water quite cleanly without leaving water marks. I recommend it!

Took the time to clean the Corsa exhaust tips, still nowhere near as clean or shiny as it can be but did as much as I could with a damp microfiber towel.

The fuel pump was still working fine without any issues but changed it as I have a lot of road trips planned, since the weather got better, so I thought it would be best to replace it in the comfort of my garage rather than on the side of the road.

I've had the car for almost 3 years now and I never missed having the 2 extra doors until yesterday. Would have been so much easier to replace the fuel pump from the rear door!

Replaced CCV for the 2nd time. The oil consumption went up and I noticed mayo on the oil filler cap and the oil drain tube back when I tried to do the O2Pilot mod. I did think about going with the GAS kit but I decoded against it -

1. It was too expensive, $100 vs $400.
2. I am moving to MI in 2 weeks, where I plan to drive the car only in summer and about 80 miles a day, so short trips and driving in colder weather is not going to be a problem.

It took me about 6 hours from start to finish, which was much faster than the last time out. I also used a 1-way check valve on the drain tube (?) to oil pan along with the installing a pipe on the oil separator with one end blocked, which I will connect to the intake manifold (O2Pilot mod) if my oil consumption does not get better. :fingerscrossed

I never changed out my CCV the whole life of the car.(143k) I bought it 3 yrs old with 44k on it. The car came out of Syracuse NY but ever since I've owned it, it's been garage kept and stored during the harshest winter months. No consistent short trips. When I removed it to install the SC, it appeared to be in great shape with no mayo anywhere...

I've been slacking in updating this thread, since I moved to Michigan. Done a bit of work over the past 2 months. Before I moved to MI, I decided to change the RTAB's, Tie rods as I don't have a garage in MI. Also wanted to change all 4 trailing arm ball joints (Lemforder 33306852895 - M3 part) but was not able to.

Replaced RTAB's (Lemforder 33326770817 - M3 part). Noticed quite a big difference in the way the car behaved. The rear end of the car is now much more planted especially over bumpy roads. The RTAB's were shot which is not surprising as the car had over 143k miles.

Replaced Tie rods (Left - Lemforder 32106777503 and Right - Lemforder 32106777504). The Tie Rods were completely shot, there was a lot of ply in them, much worse than I had thought they were. My steering was always quite hard to turn, compared to other zhp's I had driven. I always thought it was because the power steering pump was going bad. After I replaced the Tie Rods, the steering is so light that I thought I hadn't torqued everything down, but it was the Tie Rods that caused the steering to be as hard as it was. Anyway I am glad that I can turn the steering with one hand now.

Also got an alignment done at the dealership post RTAB's and Tie Rods replacement.

Replaced the 135's with Apex Arc 8s with Michelin PSS that I bought from Daniel :headbang

I always liked the Arc 8s and wanted them on my zhp. Since the roads are quite bad in MI and the rear 135s were worn down to the threads almost, I wasn't sure if I should buy another rear set of Continental dws06 since the fronts had more than half tread left or buy new Apex 17" wheels and tires to make the ride a little more forgiving. Fortunately for me Daniel listed them for sale at the right time for me to buy them. After I moved to MI, my fiance and I along with a friend drove to Daniel's place to pick them up. Met Daniel at his place and we went out for lunch before Daniel let me drive his zhp, which he has sold since :( . I've driven quite a few zhp's but his was right up there. It just felt well sorted and tight. Made me realize I had a lot of work to do to bring it top shape. While having lunch, Daniel told me about his plans to sell his zhp, which made me quite sad, but his reasons made a lot of sense.

I got about 36k miles from the Continental dws06 and the fronts still have more than half tread life left. With a square set I am sure I would've gotten more than 50k miles from them, easily. Anyway the arc 8s made the steering a bit lighter which was expected. The ride is a little better but honestly I expected the difference to be quite significant, but I think the small difference between the 135s with Conti dws06 and Arc8s with PSS is because of the sidewall stiffness. The conti dws06 seems like a much softer tires in general which does make the ride a little better. But overall I am quite happy with the way they look, drive and ride :)

Replaced oil (BMW twin power turbo 7qts) and filter (Mann 11427512300). Went over 10k miles since the last oil and filter change as I don't have a garage now and I am not allowed to change the oil in my apartment compound. Had to go to a friend's place to get it done.

Good news - The oil consumption seems to have gone away since I replaced the CCV.

Bad news - When I replaced the CCV, I also changed the dip stick o-ring and I think I did not seat it properly as the dip stick shows the oil level to be low, even after I just put in 7 quarts of oil. Will fix this when the zhp goes into storage in winter.

The rear end of the car was/is not very stable on bumpy roads. It improved a lot when I replaced the RTAB's but it still does not feel 100% right. Also I looked at them when I was replacing the RTAB's and they looked like they were shot and if the condition of the old RTAB's that I removed is anything to go by then are well past their useful life.

I didn't have time to try and install them. I was in the middle of moving to MI and joining a new job and wrapping things up at my old work place. I don't have a garage now to install them and even if I did I would need to get an alignment done after installing the ball joints and I don't think I want to spend another $150 on it since I got an alignment just 2 months ago after the rtab install. Ideally I would've liked to install all new bushings at the rear at the same time and that was the plan but it just didn't work out that way.

Installed new low beam bulbs. Went with morimoto's. The light output is considerably better now.
Also rotated the wheel/tires.
Thanks to Spencer for his help with installing the bulbs and helping out with rotating the tires.

Also Botond coded the DRLs on and the 5 blink. Thanks again BP.

The tire rotation: I think we were pretty quick. Maybe you, Rivkah, and I should start a pit team and make the big bucks!

It's probably the best $50 I've spent on the car. We'll see how long the last but initial impressions are quite good.

We did knock it off quite quickly didn't we? I was concentrating so much on rotating the tires that I completely forgot to check for tread depth and for any uneven wear. They seem to look good from what I can remember though. Oh well.

Any updates?

Well kinda.

I’ve put the Zhp in storage to save it from the salty Detroit roads. I’ve tried to find an apartment with a garage so I park it and leave it trickle charging and also work on it when I get bored but it didn’t work out. So I had to rent 10x20 storage unit close to my place. The Zhp along with the tools, extra set of wheels/tires are in the storage unit now. Unfortunately the storage doesn’t have an electrical outlet, all it has is a single bulb. So I removed the battery and I will leave it on a trickle charger at home.
I’ve considered storing the Zhp in a shop/barn/wear house that people usually rent out but I thought if I have my own storage unit, I can work on he Zhp when the weather gets a little better sometime next year (min tonight is expected to be 7f). I’ve also looked at your thread to see what you did when stored your Zhp while you were away and I kinda did the same. Moth balls, dryer sheets, swapping the 135s instead of the arc8 and inflating them to 45 psi.
Didn’t make a note of the mileage on the car :facepalm
I plan on replacing the vanos seals, vcg, spark plugs and possible engine mounts before I start driving again, but we’ll see how that goes. Also it seems like the previous battery leaked a bit and I saw some corrosion powder (is that even a term?) in the battery compartment. There seems to be no rust on the sheet metal, it almost seems like someone just took a handful and dropped it in there. So I will clean it up and apply some kinda anti rust coating. Currently driving my fiancée’s Chevy Cruze. But am looking at cpo X1’s, but I’m sure I won’t get one anytime soon cause the insurance rates in MI can sometimes be more than the car payments :cry

Anyway that’s the update for now [emoji4]

Thanks Rob! I did think about one of those, but I didn’t have the time to get one as the forecast suddenly changed to snow fall and I really wanted to get the car in storage before the roads were salted. I was planning originally to store the car this last weekend but had to do it on Wednesday last week because of the sudden change in forecast.
Don’t think I can install on of those now as the bulb socket is quite high and in the middle of the storage unit, right on top of the car and I don’t think I can reach it now with the car in the way.

Rob, I remember you and Kristen having an X1 35i xdrive. I am looking at cpo X1 28i xdrive and I was wondering if you had any idea about their reliability and if you would recommend one?

It was a great car. We really liked it. The year we had was based on the E9x platform, pretty mature platform by then so it was reliable.
The newer ones share nothing with the older ones... whole new car. Ours was an M sport too which made it a little nicer. It still had the older 6 speed auto though. The 28i have the turbo 4 banger with the 8 speed I believe. I really like that combo too

There was no question about a second car for us since we wanted to keep our "nice" cars from getting destroyed in the winter... It helped that Kristen got a car expense allowance from her job at the dealership. Before that, our winter beater was an old Accord with about 190k and 3 pedals :)

having a second car also helps when the ZHP is down for maintenance and rerpair.... you don't have to worry about getting it fixed in time to get to work... plus being a black car, it's nice to be able to leave it at home when it rains right after you've spent hours making it look pretty

The problem with Dr Vanos is you have no idea of the history/age/mileage of the unit that you receive. I just went through this with my Dr Vanos unit. I went to rebuild it but it looked extremely worn. At least if it was my original, I'd know the history age/mileage of the unit. Also, I believe Dr vanos doesn't swap out the electric solenoids... at least it appeared that way on the rebuilt unit I got from them...I had an extensive conversation with Raj, the owner of Beisan, which convinced me even more that Beisan is the way to go...

Just print off the instructions from his site and follow along. Grab a VCG kit from ECS and have at it. Also a good time to do spark plugs if you're due.

I replaced them on my 155k car, but it only has about 100k on the engine. O rings were hella hardened.

My only regret is buying the cheaper seals from the Russian site (vanos-bmw or something) and the fitment was not nearly as good as Besian.

Chiming in here randomly, but is there a part number for the two individual gaskets in the VANOS that sit between the VANOS cylinders and their respective covers? I didn't replace them in mine and wish I had, but couldn't find any specific part numbers for them, although a certain kit on Amazon has them.

That part is internal as opposed to an external oil leak which causes oil to seep out of the engine, causing a mess and oil loss. An oil leak inside the engine is just going to return to the oil pan. I doubt those gaskets would leak bad enough to affect the oil pressure needed to activate the VANOS...

I’m planning to take the Zhp out of storage on April 8th, so I started to work on the car slowly. Yesterday I swapped the 135s with the Apex/PSS and changed the transmission fluid. I previously used redline MTL and wasn’t too happy with it after a few thousand miles hopefully the ATF will be better.

What didn't you like about MTL?

It was fine for the first 10-15k miles or so but later the gear shifting wasn’t smooth at all, felt like the oil degraded, especially 1-2 shift. But surprisingly as I was draining the oil yesterday, the oil didn’t look too bad, meaning it wasn’t dark and it still had the reddish hue to it. Recently I realized that redline themselves recommends ATF for our cars and some members here recommend it so thought I’d give it a try.

Changed engine oil and filter.

Finally took the zhp out of storage after a bit of maintenance. 2 weeks ago I replaced the transmission oil and this past Saturday I replaced the engine oil and filter. I initially wanted to replace the VANOS, VCG and spark plugs while it was in storage but I was quite busy and wasn’t able to get to it. I will be out of the country for 3 weeks starting this Friday so it’l have to wait until end of May most likely. But I’m happy to be driving the zhp again. The car started without any issues. Also I think I prefer the redline ATF over the MTL I had earlier. Shifting gears seems much more smoother now. I drove the car about 200 miles since I took it out and all seems good so far...

Replaced VANOS seals and spark plugs.

I was so long overdue to replace the vanos seals. The rubber seals were completely brittle and turned to plastic. I also replaced the spark plugs cause they have about 100k miles on them. They looked good with no black deposit on them. I also replaced few other seals which BMWCurves recommended. Overall wasn’t a difficult DIY. Just a lot of nuts and bolts to deal with.

I noticed the car seems to have a bit more torque at low end which was expected. I’m taking it easy for the 200 miles or so. Since my commute everyday is about 80 miles it shouldn’t take too long. It will be interesting to see how much difference there is once I start driving normally.

I went to Milwaukee for the weekend. When heading back yesterday, I tried to start the car but it didn’t crank. Took the key out and tried once again and no luck. I checked the voltage on the instrument cluster and it read 12.7V. I thought it was probably the starter so I asked my friends to push the car and we were able to start it and when I check the battery voltage when the car was running it was about 14.7V. I head back home after driving 7 hrs and once I park it at my car port I turn it off and try to start again and it starts right up. Earlier today I try to start the car again to get to work and it starts up without any issues. Once I get to work I check the battery voltage after I turn the car off and it’s 12.4V.

So I’m thinking it’s not the battery or the alternator and is probably the starter. FYI the battery is 4 years old.

Does the starter die suddenly and not work again or does it show this intermittent behavior before eventually going for good?

Any other possible causes you folks can think of?

Based on my experience with starter failure/replacement in the X3, it will be intermittent before completely failing.

My ZHP’s starter is in the intermittent phase, but I have a new one on the shelf for whenever I feel like doing it. About 1 in 5 times it will spin up, but not engage. I then take the key out, put it back in, and it starts on attempt #2 every single time. Thus, I think my solenoid is not pushing the starter motor wheel thing (yes that’s the proper term) onto the crank, so it’s just free-spinning in place. I probably am not typing that coherently, but it makes sense to me [emoji5]

You got it right bruh. Starters sometimes fail with the solenoid sticking and not pushing the starter gear out to the crank, but most of the time it's the worn brushes finding a dead spot in the motor. People always think I'm trying to trick them when I tell them to hit the starter with a hammer. It's a redneck way to shift the position of the brushes or loosen up a stuck solenoid until you can get the starter replaced. Unfortunately it takes two people to start the car this way and no one wants to be the hammer man.

Oh man. I am not looking forward to replacing the starter.
Can you actually hear the starter just free spinning?

You got it right bruh. Starters sometimes fail with the solenoid sticking and not pushing the starter gear out to the crank, but most of the time it's the worn brushes finding a dead spot in the motor. People always think I'm trying to trick them when I tell them to hit the starter with a hammer.

Given the manifold location, can you even get to it with a hammer? That bish’ is totally obscured on these engines.

Yep, it’s an interesting sound lol. I just put a clip up in Flickr (sorry, I don’t have a YouTube account).

The starter won’t be fun, but it’s a good time to replace the manifold and throttle body gaskets if they’ve never been done before. You’ll need E12 torx (99% sure) for the two starter bolts, and hopefully the alignment pin releases easier than it did for me (yes, I had the starter loose in my hands but didn’t replace it because it wasn’t acting up when I did the clutch).

Yup, heard of the hammer trick but was sure if there was enough space on the e46. Learnt it from a bus driver from back home about 15 years ago. Unfortunately that didn’t help him back then and I had to walk home...

Hmm, my car made no such noises yesterday. It was complete silence. I turned the key expecting the car to crank but all I got was complete silence.

Sounds like Spenser has a sticking solenoid and you have a dead spot in the electric motor.

Everyone gets a starter!

So you are telling me the car might not start in the evening when I try to get home. Shit.

While talking to a friend about my zhp’s occasional no crank issue, he mentioned that I should be looking at the battery voltage during cranking and not just before starting and after starting. I check yesterday and the battery voltage while cranking was high 10s and low 11s.

Does anyone know what the ideal voltage during cranking is? Can it be causing the no crank problems?

That is very close to normal and is expected with an older battery.

Do you know how old the battery is?

4 years is about right to when the battery from Autozone or similar auto stores decides to die. Seems like most of their batteries die as soon as the warranty expires.

If it is an option, those auto stores do a free battery test. Might be worth having the current battery tested to see what condition it is.

That’s a good idea Vas.
I’m fairly certain the no crank issue is due to the starter motor but my friend got me thinking about the battery again, which I kinda ruled out earlier. Doesn’t hurt to check I guess.

The zhp didn’t crank again just now. I checked the battery voltage and it’s 12.1V on the instrument cluster, which seems low. This is the 3rd time the car didn’t crank. The similarity between all 3 instances is that the car ran only for a few min before shutting off. I’m leaning more towards the battery now than the starter motor being the issue.

I have not updated this thread in a while. Not a lot happened but a few parts have been replaced as they failed.

July 2018 - 165526 miles - Replaced Starter Motor

Got the starter motor replaced at a shop close to home as it failed. It started with occasional "No Crank" but after 2 weeks or so after it started acting up, it seemed to have failed completely. Since I don't have garage now and apartment complex is not DIY friendly, had to give it to a shop. The shop said I cannot supply them the parts and they wouldn't tell me which brand of starter they would install as well, but their price was at least $200 cheaper than the few other shops I asked and even they said I cannot supply the parts. Oh Well, at least their works comes with 2year/20000mile warranty FWIW. But the day after I got the car back from them, I got an SES light, along with the trip meter resetting after each key cycle, which I found was cause of blown fuse. I was sure it was vacuum leak and the shop said they did not remove the intake manifold so I removed the intake boots and installed them again without going back to the shop. Since I don't have a BMW scan tool, I went to autozone and asked them to scan it and they came up with a lean burn on bank 2 and p1515. I was sure I fixed the lean burn issue when I reinstalled the boots and for p1515 I had to reset the throttle adaptations. The light has not come back since and it have driven about 5000 miles since then. The shop did say I had a leaky thermostat and water pump. More on than below.

August 2018 - 166432 miles - Replaced Thermostat 11537509227 (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-thermostat-assembly-genuine-bmw-11537509227oe) and washer (11537509357)

The shop where the zhp was getting its starter replaced told me I was having a leaking thermostat and water pump. Just for giggles I asked them how much it would cost to replace them both and they quoted me ~$750 for both :blink. I told them not to replace it but I did not dismiss the possibility of a leaky thermostat and water pump as I had noticed that my coolant was running a little low. So after I got the car back I checked and only the thermostat was leaking. So ordered a thermostat and a gasket without knowing the thermostat came with one. I will return it along with an oil change kit and coolant to FCPEuro. After replacing the thermostat I kept an eye on the coolant level and so far the coolant level has been fine. I was able to replace this in my carport as it only took an hour. Anything longer, then I might get a notice from the management.

This has been leaking and non functional for about an year. Was just lazy I guess.

September 30, 2018 - 170289 miles - Rotated wheels/tires

the last time the tires were rotated was back at the 2017 mafia reunion (156558 miles). The wear seems to be pretty even but I did notice that one of the wheels had a nail but seems to be an extremely slow leak. It was in the middle of the tire, so I think it should be patched up quite easily. I installed the ARC8/PSS back at 144122 miles and they weren't new back then. I bought them from Daniel (NoVaPhotog) and I think he had driven them a few thousand miles and also a track day. Even without considering Daniel's miles, the tire have about 26k miles on them ans they seem like they have another 10k miles to go before I need to replace them. If that turns out to be accurate then I'll get about 35k miles from them which I over what I thought I could get from them. We'll see how that goes.

Anyway since I took the car out of storage back in April, I put on about 12k miles which is a little less than what I expected. It will likely go back to storage during thanksgiving. Also on another note, I think my oil pan gasket is hemorrhaging oil because I am having to top up half a quart every 500 miles. Not sure when I will get to it. Not having a garage sucks :crying

I also want to check the condition of the rear shocks as the ride quality has gotten a little worse. I have Koni Yellows and they were installed about 3 years and 62k miles ago. Maybe it's time in terms of mileage? Guess I will find out soon...

Also in the parts cabinet are rear upper and lower control arm bushings and engine mounts, which have been sitting there for more than a year. One of these days......
