//Car may eventually be an S54 chassis or a drift car after I graduate. :shifty

Car is salvage title due to water/flood damage. Coming to me from San Diego, CA. I'm assuming it's rain damage. Carfax says damage was reported 1/20/2016 (or that's the day the insurance company declared it a total loss) but CA was getting some good rain during that time frame. That, or it was somehow flooded, but the pictures don't show any evidence of severe flooding of that sort (interior looks clean, none of the lights have condensation, cluster is clean, car runs and drives, no evidence of water on exterior, etc...). Car will be getting picked up tomorrow, and will hopefully be in my hands by Wednesday or Thursday.

School is getting more intense for me. I hate the additional stress of the car payment for the M3, so I am selling it, and purchasing this car as a DD. It will get me better gas mileage and I will own it outright.

I'm excite.

You're going to have to put a real diff in this one, though. Especially after coming from the ///M. I know you like to kick the rear end out:thumbsup

Glad you enjoy them. I'm happy to write about them.

I do need a real diff. I'm gonna miss the M so bad, but to be honest, as I potentially start getting into autocross/track, I will say that the M3 is much more car than I can handle. I feel much more comfortable learning how to drive on a slower car.

Agreed. And yeah, I thought hydrolocking usually translated to bent valve stems, broken pistons, and other significant internal issues. If it runs and sounds normal, that's a good sign!

Yeah I know (that oil looks yucky, not about cooling duct). I'm hoping just new oil will get rid of the loud ticking. I don't think any valves are bent because when I revved the engine last night it got quieter, not louder, as I would expect it to.

Hopefully.

Dario, dump the old oil and fill her up with some fresh cheapo oil from the parts store. Do a quick compression test and post the results! If it's running good, run it for 200 or so miles and send off a sample of the oil to Blackstone.

Just got her up to operating temperature with new oil. Seems to run fine, save for the fact that the valve train seems really noisy. Could also be a noisy vanos, or maybe bad oil fucks with the vanos. At any rate, I'm hoping it quiets down and that's the end of it.

I can't drive the car on the roads lol. Too many cops for me to risk no papers.

Might go focus on other things now, and heat cycle the car a few times for the next few days and try to get as much as I can out, then dump the oil while it's warm. Then gonna fill her up again and do a tank or two of driving before doing a third oil change.

This new batch of oil will tell all. How wet is the filter? It's likely rod bearings. If you're lucky, you can roll new bearings in - but that's a gamble. If enough water got in there to take those out, you have damage elsewhere.

Junkyard M54's are cheap nowadays. Then there's also the S54/LSX route. If you're wanting a fun project car, drop a M52 in and then you can boost it later - not sure what your plans are, but it's a cheap way to make big power, relatively reliably.

All the reading I've done says rod bearings are usually the first thing to go when oil issues arise. Why does having bad rod bearings mean I have damage elsewhere?

And I'm just looking to DD right now. Need another M54 if I'm swapping engines.

EDIT: I won't be running the car till I figure this out, so I don't see how the oil will tell me anything unless I check the oil the came out with the water.

It's not certain that you do, but there is a high possibility. The rod bearings are usually the first to go. Pull the VC and check out the cams. Pull a few plugs and use a video scope to checkout the cylinder walls.

Also, if it was hydrolocked (which certainly sounds like the case), there is a great chance the some of the conrods are slightly bent - first indication of this usually a slight rod knock and the bearings going out...

Did the motor sound "heavy" when you turned it over for the first time - almost like the starter was really struggling to get it to turn over?

As soon as I saw oil in the motor oil that's what I assumed, because there is no water damage to the body of the car.

So I just opened up the top end. First of all, mayonnaise galore. Everywhere. Water still abounds after everything condenses and cools. No obvious damage on top but then again you can't see much.

Inside of cylinders are damp. I'm assuming water condensation. Have carbon build up, too (of course). Spark plugs bone dry.

Looked at old oil filter. Metal everywhere. All the same color. All particles are small, which may be an indication that it's only bearings because if it was something sudden and severe, maybe there would be bigger particles. Also just as likely those particles are potentially at the bottom of the oil pain or in the oil I drained.

Gonna go have some food now, go to O'Reily and get a compression tester, and then just go to homework. Need to stay on top of school in the meantime.

I'm back guys! Flew in yesterday morning. And I have an update for the car!

I found out where the noise is coming from. The bearings are actually fine. In fact, they half incredibly little wear at all. What happened is that the connecting rod on cylinder 6 bent, and what this did is violate the clearance between the bottom of the piston and the large sprocket at the end of the crank (backside). I could tell when I removed the crank cover and saw like 6-7 of the teeth on the sprocket were ground down about 1mm. The crank should still be fine to run. No damage to the journals or the bearings, in fact when I rebuild I probably won't replace them. The next step now is to just tear it all down and replace that rod and anything else that is worn or damaged and slap it all back together.

The suction cup attaches to the valve face to allow you to spin the valve while it is seated. This allows you to grind the valve in place to get a good seal.

Still driving this car. 30k on the motor now, minimal issues. Had a recent bad run of small failures on the car recently, though. Showing its age at almost 190k miles with minimal maintenance lol. Now that I'm working full-time (construction :p), I can afford to invest a little bit into it. First priority is fixing the AC evaporator, and next up is probably figuring out why my motor just never does run quite as well as the other E46s I've had.

List of parts I've ordered:

4 jack pads (mine have broken or fallen off)
Fuel filter
Fuel door latch
Fuel tank cap
Drier receiver
AC expansion valve
AC evaporator core
Fuel tank filler pot
Santech AC o-ring kit
Intake cam position sensor

$382 for all those parts.

I've also recently switch over to some Style 197s that I picked up for a steal. The fronts have decent tread, and I installed some cheap chinese tires on the rear to burn through until I end up fixing the suspension. Then I'll actually get some respectable tires.

Next up, I'm probably going to pull the motor again. I have a lot of small things I want to check, get a new flywheel and clutch, and maybe this time, full rebuild the head instead of just refreshing it.

Good day for the car today.

Installed my Turner 75mm studs, and in the process found the source of a noise coming from the heat shield rubbing the rotor. Also installed the new camshaft position sensor on the intake side. I installed a new fuel cap, fuel filler pot, and a new clicking mechanism that you use to pop the fuel door.

I also installed a new fuel filter and found that the vacuum hose on the filter was completely destroyed, so I installed a new one, as well.

Pretty good day.
